From a study of 363 general contractors, ranging from a few million to several billion in revenue, 83% of profits are captured by the top 20% of companies.  This means that in a high risk, low margin business like construction, most companies are just playing to play—content with the scraps of profits they can capture or frustrated by their inability to earn more. Tim Mahoney is not only a principal at the reputable professional services firm, Clifton Larson Allen, but also a strategic thinker who understands the power of data analytics and technology in construction. Tim currently concentrates his practice working with privately held companies in the construction and real estate groups working with general contractors, subcontractors, specialty contractors, engineers, homebuilders, commercial, and multi-family real estate. Prior to joining the firm, Tim served as a subsidiary controller for a large publicly traded company. In addition to accounting and financial expertise, Tim is a thought leader and has written several articles including his recent publication “Build for Your Future: Data Analytics in Construction”.  Learn more about the Transforming Construction podcast: https://www.coltivar.com/transforming-construction-podcast

The construction industry shares some similar characteristics with manufacturing, such as utilizing labor, equipment, and technology to transform raw materials into a finished product.  However, with construction, that finished product is completely unique every single time.  Even if a building is being constructed twice with the same exact blueprint--dynamic site conditions, changing weather patterns, revolving teams, and interchanging subcontractors combined with thousands of moving pieces and parts, make every single project different, complex, and challenging. Imagine as a contractor the pressure to perform and to mitigate risk--all the while operating with razor thin margins. This is what Michael Ho and his partners realized and led them to start Bespoke Metrics, a data management and analytics company that helps construction companies reduce the time-consuming process of collecting information and qualifying contractors.  Prior to starting his company, Michael spent 15 years working at a global credit ratings business with responsibilities over corporate credit, infrastructure finance, and banking.
