In this episode of BYFIQ, I dive into a fascinating analogy between overconfidence in the kitchen and financial literacy in business. It all started while watching an episode of MasterChef, one of my favorite shows. I was struck by the overconfidence of a contestant named Mark, who presented a lackluster breakfast to the judges, thinking he had the competition in the bag. This led me to reflect on my early days in business when I, too, was dangerously overconfident in my financial skills.I share a personal story of running a multi-million dollar company without knowing how to read a financial statement, which resulted in costly mistakes and lost opportunities. This lack of awareness is similar to the infamous Dunning-Kruger effect, where people with little ability in a field overestimate their competence. I recount the unbelievable tale of two bank robbers who thought rubbing lemon juice on their faces would make them invisible to cameras—a clear example of the Dunning-Kruger effect in action.Through these stories, I emphasize the importance of financial literacy and understanding your financial IQ. I invite you to take the financial IQ assessment at BYFIQ to identify areas where you might need improvement, whether it's the balance sheet, the statement of cash flows, or another aspect of finance. By applying financial principles to real-world situations, you can build critical skills that will significantly impact your career and business success.Join me as I explore how recognizing our limitations and continuously learning can prevent us from making costly mistakes and help us grow more profitable businesses. And remember, confidence without competence can be dangerous—just like thinking lemon juice can make you invisible. Until next time, take care of yourself and keep learning. Cheers!Support the Show.

Welcome back to the Business Strategy podcast, I'm Steve Coughran, your host. Today, we're diving into the core principles that the best founders employ to build remarkable companies. Number one on our list is getting intimately acquainted with your customers. It's astonishing how many leaders fail to engage with their clients regularly. I'm not talking about surface-level chats; I mean meaningful conversations where you ask the tough questions. I once advised a company to survey their customers about what they loved and hated, using those strong words intentionally to uncover deep-seated issues. Asking customers about their loves and hates reveals invaluable insights, guiding you towards solving real pain points. But remember, empathy is key here. Step into your customers' shoes and approach feedback with an open mind. This leads us to our second principle: short cycle time. Founders often spend too long perfecting their product or service before testing it with customers. Adopting a system where you can build, measure, learn, and adjust rapidly is crucial for success. Take it from my own experience; investing in a strategy management software without customer feedback led to costly mistakes. Test your hypothesis quickly and cheaply to validate product-market fit before investing significant time and resources. Our third principle is staying lean until everything works well. Don't rush into hiring; instead, build your infrastructure and operating model first. Scaling too quickly can backfire if your systems aren't robust. Remember, in the early stages, you're iterating and refining your offering, so keep your team lean until you've nailed it. Fourth, make a long-term commitment to your business. Avoid the temptation to jump ship when results don't materialize quickly. Building a sustainable business takes time and perseverance. Show yourself grace and have patience; success doesn't happen overnight. Lastly, take care of yourself. As founders, we have a responsibility to our stakeholders to be as healthy as possible. Avoid the allure of burnout; prioritize self-care and maintain a balanced lifestyle. Remember, taking care of yourself isn't selfish—it's essential for sustainable success. So there you have it, the five things the best founders do to build great companies. Join me next time for more insights and strategies to fuel your business growth. Until then, take care and cheers to your success!Links:Do you have ideas or feedback to share? While Luthringhausen is confident that there will be a consolidation, he does not expect "a massive sell-off" until after the presidential election, when he foresees a potential 10 percent correction; in the interim, he is expecting a solid year with slight pullbacks but near constant upward pressure. Mike Buckius, chief executive officer at Gateway Investment Advisers, says that the concentration at the top of the market and the rate cycle and the Federal Reserve's delays in cutting rates have made it that investors should manage risks, because valuations have gotten frothy and drawdowns "throw investors off of their long-term plans." He says that the market's bounce-back to record highs makes it feel like stocks are due for 'a pause and consolidation,' which is the kind of time when Gateway's index-option strategy -- using options to generate income that protects against downturns -- tends to work best, and he discusses the firm's new ETF which focuses on the quality factor. Plus, Steve Coughran, chief financial officer at MoneyPickle.com, is here for "The Financial Crunch," discussing whether there is ever a time for investors and savers to act panicky, and how you work with an adviser to build emotional discipline and to never let the market get the best of you.
