What I Learned From Being On The Bench For Three Years In College

The transfer portal has changed the landscape of college sports.  I love it, and I'm also worried.  Everything has its pros and cons.  As a player, I didn't have the freedom to transfer. I had to sit on the bench and hope an opportunity presented itself.  In this video, I discussed the valuable lessons I learned from being on the bench for three years.  Check out the video and let me know what you think.  Do you think we're creating a generation of athletes who don't know how to fight through adversity?  Or do you think if the situation ain't ideal, automatically leave?

Why I Prefer To Train Alone #119

In this episode, I talk about why I prefer to train alone.  I started training alone when I was a kid.  It wasn't t a choice I made I just was the kid that nobody took serious so I had to find a way. This continued even when I was in college.  We had all the resources in the world, but I was always the player who couldn't get a rebounder or couldn't get a coach to pour into me truly.  So, I had to figure it out by studying and breaking down a ton of film.  I don't like people in my training sessions if we're not on the same wavelengths.  Working with trainers from the teams I sign up for is one of my biggest struggles.I've learned how to train myself and heal myself in case of injury so that I'm not dependent on anyone at any time.

Something I've learned after 35 years. It never gets easy. Every time, I've felt I had it figured out. A new challenge appeared. I used to look at it like, why me? Why I can't never get over the hump. Then I sat back and thought about it. I have overachieved. Everything I said I wanted to do in life, I did it in my twenties. Never really appreciating all the hard work and dedication led me to believe life was against me. I've been winning the whole time.No matter where you are, there will always be a challenge. That's exactly what you want. That keeps you young. When you're young, you will have to prove yourself. You must prove that you're worth it when you're in your prime. You must prove that you're not old when you're a vet. You're not a loser unless you quit.#makempay everyday#thetyrenjohnsonshow

How To Play When You're Not Comfortable With Your Role #115

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 13, 2023 19:03

Many players are in this situation.  I've been in this situation my whole career.  It's one of the reasons I created the #makempay mentality.    Most players were playing against the other team.  Most of the time, I played against my team and tried my best to force them to see value in me.Now, since that's out of the way. I'm qualified to talk about this subject.  I've mastered how to fill your role, change your role, and create a new role.  It's a game within a game.  You already know my methods if you purchased my "How To Makempay" e-book.  I see it even more clearly as I get older in my career.  That's why I don't laugh at "old man" jokes.  Somewhere, there's some truth in most jokes.  You don't play for 14 years professionally without discipline, hard work, and strategy.  So, I'm not about to join in on your dismissive remarks.  There are many ways to succeed on your team, even if you don't like your role.

Why I Don't Play Pick Up Basketball Anymore #114

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 6, 2023 19:23

I'll start by saying I love pickup basketball. It's one of the purest forms of the game. I played pickup ten years into my professional career. There are a lot of pros playing pickup, but just like anything, there are a lot of cons. Every player's situation is different. One of the pros is that you get to feel contact in the offseason. You get to work on some of the moves you're practicing in training. You get some cardio if you're playing seriously. Now for the cons. Pickup has changed. Just like the game of basketball is constantly evolving, pickup basketball has evolved, too. It's evolved for the worst for me. Quick three-point shots, no rebounding, minimal defense, no organization, no real game-like reps, and many more cons.In the offseason now, I mainly focus on my body and my skillset. Since I have a consistent contract, I use my job to get the pros that I would get from offseason pickup games. As I said, this is a case-by-case basis, and everyone's situation differs. This is what has worked for me. I arrive in shape, and my tools are sharp and ready for a long season. Leave in the comments what your offseason looks like.

Many won't agree with doing more than what you're paid for. That's because many people are doing a job solely to garnish a pay check. I think that life will eventually become a burden. I believe in doing work that excites you. Sure, you have to do what you have to do to take care of yourself. But, while you're doing that, in my opinion you should be searching for a way out to do work that excites you.  We weren't given this beautiful life to work for wages. Life is so much more than that.  That's why in this episode, I wanted to talk about doing more than what you're paid for. Going the extra mile so that you can do more meaningful work. Work will impact your pockets and the entire atmosphere around you.

Age is a dumb thing to control you. We have so many opportunities today to be successful. There should be no excuses. There are 8yr old kids making millions on Youtube. There are 40yr old men becoming professional athletes. We live in a world where society tries to limit you. As soon as you reach a certain age, they start putting all these limits on you that are all opinion based. We have everything we need today to do what we want.I'm even facing it today. I've been lucky to have had excellent seasons so far in my career, and because I'm approaching 34 all of a sudden, I hear the old talks. Not because of my production but simply because of some archaic way of thinking. Don't even let them joke with you like that.I've had to #makempay my whole life, so I'm used to it. But, I want you to know if you want to live a TRÜF life. You will have to have a #makempay mindset to conquer all of society's limitations.PLEASE CHECKOUT:tyrenjohnson.com

Episode #086 From D2 To Pro Basketball In Dance With Dustin SlevaI've always respected @dustinsleva game, so I wanted to pick his brain. Having similar stories, I think it's an important conversation for players like us to share our stories for the next generation. We talked about his story, becoming a pro, finances, mental approach, sleep routines, and a bunch more.  We talked about taking the money or the biggest opportunity in this clip. I've always said you take the opportunity cause this is one of the few jobs where you can double or triple your salary in one year. For most players that I've talked to, their first-year salary, on average, was about 30k. Very few players get big salaries when they first come to Europe. If you show that you're better than expected, you can double or triple your salary for the next five years.
