The Australian share market rebounded on Thursday, recovering roughly half of the previous session's losses as investors shrugged off geopolitical tensions and bought back into oversold stocks. Technology led the gains with a strong four percent rise, while energy stocks recovered despite earlier weakness. The positive lead came from Wall Street, where major US indices rose on signs of economic resilience. Investors are now looking ahead to US jobs data and monitoring ongoing developments in the Middle East. Steve Daghlian and Laura Besarati are Market Analysts at CommSec. Wanda Ford is a basketball standout. She is the first woman in NCAA history to amass 1500 basketball rebounds and she set the NCAA career record with 1,887 rebounds. She had 102 career double-doubles. Wanda was also one of the leading scorers in the game. She set the NCAA single-season scoring record with 919 points in 1986 (now eighth all time). Her average of 30.6 points per game in 1986 was the second highest at that time (now fifth all time). She also scored 54 points in a February 22, 1986 game against Missouri State, which was the second highest single-game scoring total up to that time (now tied for seventh all time). In this episode Wanda tells stories of her basketball in the early days of girls sports, what drew her to Drake University, her education there, traveling and living all over the place through basketball, and her late-night (until 2am!) basketball program. Wanda was a Women's Sports Foundation Player of the Year, a Kodak All-American, a three time Women's Basketball Yearbook All-America team selection, a two time MVP player of the year, a four-time first-team all-conference choice, ten times a league player of the week, a two time finalist for the Wade Trophy, and was named Coach of the Year in youth basketball by the City of Parma, where she is now a Phys Ed teacher. After graduating from Drake in 1986, Wanda played professional basketball for 16 years in Italy, Brazil, Sweden and Israel. She was part of seven league championship teams, and won such personal awards as Most Valuable Player and Newcomer of the Year, both in Israel. Wanda's number has been retired at both East Tech High School and Drake University. She was inducted into the Sports Legends of Cleveland Public Schools Senate League in 2022 for her high school career at East Tech High School. And in 2025 Wanda was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, which is how I learned about her outstanding career. Peter Tuchman reports from the NYSE after a wild week ending on Friday the 13th/Valentine's Day. He says the Dow closed up around 49,500, inching back toward 50,000 after Thursday's significant, broad-based selloff, while buyers stepped in with intent on solid volume (about 1.4B shares) and strong advances over declines. He notes transports and industrials were up, tech remained under pressure, and he discusses anxiety around the AI narrative while arguing the tech trade is pausing rather than broken. He adds CPI came in a bit lower than expected, earnings have been softer, and more clarity is needed from upcoming economic data, inflation/employment updates, interest-rate-cut expectations, and political headlines. He mentions gold and silver had surged then pulled back, crypto remains under pressure, and margin calls may be forcing some selling elsewhere. He closes with Valentine's Day wishes and a reminder that a three-day market closure can create added weekend uncertainty. 00:00 Einstein of Wall Street Intro from the NYSE Floor 00:50 Friday the 13th Market Close: Dow Near 50K, SPY Recap 01:13 Today's Bounce After the Selloff: Volume, Breadth & Sector Check 01:55 AI/Tech Anxiety vs. the Bigger Bull Narrative 03:17 What's Driving Uncertainty: CPI, Earnings, and Lack of Clarity 03:46 Looking Ahead: February Catalysts, Fed/White House Headlines 04:16 Gold, Silver, Crypto Pressure & Spillover Into Stocks 04:44 Valentine's Day Sign-Off + 3-Day Weekend Warning 05:20 Final Goodbye: Trade Like Einstein Closing Remarks All investing involves the risk of loss, including loss of principal. Business and finance news from the Asia-Pacific.Asian stocks extended their rally to a fresh record as a rebound in US technology shares gathered pace, easing pressure on markets after worries over outsized spending on artificial intelligence. The moves in equities signaled easing concerns around the AI trade that came to a head in the past two weeks, lashing software companies and casting a pall over high-spending tech companies. While that plays out, traders are now bracing for key US economic data that may shape expectations for the Federal Reserve's interest-rate path. For more on what is moving the markets, we turn to Ross Mayfield, Investment Strategist at Baird. Plus - Treasuries edged higher to open a consequential week, with traders awaiting readings on the labor market and inflation for signals on the strength of the US economy. However, there is still pressure on the dollar. We heard from Carie Li, Global Market Strategist at DBS. She spoke to Bloomberg's Shery Ahn and Avril Hong on the Asia Trade. On the local front, UOB takes the spotlight as we review its movements ahead of earnings later this month, alongside OCBC and DBS - the latter having logged two consecutive red sessions following its latest results. From there, we turn to Singapore Airlines, which is also set to report on the 24th of February. SIA has enjoyed a strong run over the past 5-6 days, climbing nearly 5% and breaking out of a W-shaped formation on the charts. With momentum clearly improving, we discuss how the fundamentals stack up too, especially in light of the airline’s recently announced $500 million, 10-year bond issuance. We then shift to Japan, where the Nikkei is staging a powerful bounce following election developments. On Market View, Sean Cheong speaks to Willie Keng, Founder of The Dividend Titan, to discuss the latest market movements.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The global ship recycling market saw another sharp shift this week as the U.S. dollar weakened across nearly all recycling destinations, providing fresh support to buyer sentiment across the sub-continent. Steel fundamentals also strengthened significantly, with India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh reporting notable weekly jumps in local steel plate prices. In this week's ship recycling market podcast, Ingrid and Henning break down the latest movements in the Baltic Dry Index, oil prices falling below sixty-two U.S. dollars per barrel, and how improving domestic fundamentals are reshaping pricing expectations across the Indian sub-continent. Pakistan continues to lead the market, supported by firm steel levels, improving currency performance, and renewed demand for dry bulk candidates. Bangladesh re-enters the spotlight as Chattogram activity increases, though uncertainty remains high with national elections approaching mid-February. India shows stronger footing as steel prices rebound and the Indian Rupee strengthens, while Turkey remains subdued, with Aliaga activity limited and the Turkish Lira continuing its gradual decline. This episode also highlights the ongoing shortage of recycling candidates, increased interest in older handy bulkers and LNG units, and the evolving balance of supply and demand shaping demolition pricing into early 2026. Designed for shipowners, cash buyers, recyclers, brokers, financiers, and maritime professionals tracking global demolition markets, this weekly discussion covers pricing direction, market sentiment, HKC compliance developments, and the key risks and opportunities currently shaping the ship recycling landscape.

Free for Fremont Chamber members, $15 for everyone else. Register here. This week on the show, Todd Bishop and Taylor Soper hit the road for a driving tour of the news, making stops at Starbucks, Microsoft, and an Amazon Fresh store in its final days. First up, Starbucks reports its first U.S. transaction growth in about two years — and announces plans for an AI "ordering companion" that translates cravings into custom drinks. Todd tests it the old-fashioned way, ordering a banana bread latte at the drive-through. Then, Microsoft beats quarterly expectations but sees its stock drop 12% in a single day. The culprit? Investor concerns about the company's exposure to OpenAI, which now accounts for roughly 45% of Microsoft's contracted future cloud revenue. Finally, Amazon is closing all of its Fresh grocery stores and Go convenience stores in the U.S., exiting its homegrown retail formats entirely. Todd and Taylor visit a Seattle location during its clearance sale - and find a long line at a store whose original promise was no lines at all.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ed, Rob, and Jeremy took some time from Tuesday's BBMS to discuss where they expect to see the O's attendance 2026. Will it rebound back to 2024 levels?
PC spending has seen a significant rebound, with Gartner reporting a 9.3% rise in worldwide PC shipments in late 2025, primarily driven by corporate IT upgrades to meet Windows 11 requirements. This recovery, which saw 10.1% growth in Q4 2025 according to Omnia data, highlights a shift from consumer-led demand to necessity-driven upgrades. Despite supply chain challenges in memory and storage, leading to cost increases, 57% of B2B partners anticipate growth in their PC business, underscoring a sustained demand for hardware management and support among MSPs.Concurrently, worldwide spending on artificial intelligence is projected to reach approximately $2.5 trillion by 2026, a 44% increase from the previous year, according to Gartner. This surge is fueled by substantial investments in AI infrastructure, which is expected to account for $1.37 trillion of the total spending. John David Lovelock of Gartner emphasizes that AI adoption success hinges not only on financial investment but also on organizational maturity and self-awareness, suggesting that the value derived from this investment is not yet as certain as the spending itself. For MSPs, this indicates a growing need to navigate the complexities of AI infrastructure deployment and demonstrate tangible value to clients. In the realm of managed services, recent strategic moves by several companies signal an evolving MSP landscape. Corsica Technologies announced 105% year-over-year growth in managed services bookings for 2025 and expanded its portfolio through acquisition, aiming for consolidation and integrated offerings. Net at Work nearly doubled its managed services division size by acquiring a regional competitor, prioritizing scale. Rhubarb IT, spun out from Mac Center, is focusing on a niche Apple-focused IT managed services model, aiming for differentiation. These expansions highlight varying strategies—consolidation, scale, and specialization—that MSPs must consider when evaluating market opportunities and competitive positioning. The implications for MSPs are multi-faceted. The PC market's recovery emphasizes the continued importance of hardware lifecycle management and support services. The explosive growth in AI spending necessitates careful evaluation of infrastructure versus value, with potential risks for organizations rushing capacity purchases without clear demand justification. Furthermore, the diverse expansion strategies among MSPs underscore the need for clear operational, contractual, and financial planning to manage integration, delivery consistency, and customer expectations. The appointment of Rob Rae as a strategic advisor to Guards highlights the critical need for transparency in vendor relationships, particularly concerning incentives, as undisclosed financial arrangements can introduce bias and risk for MSPs who rely on objective evaluation of technologies and partners. In this episode, Ingrid and Henning cover what is moving sentiment, how currencies and steel are shaping bids, and where recycling candidates are most likely to end up in the near term. This week in the markets: India (Alang) strengthened sharply and moved back to the top of the pricing range, even with the rupee softer near 90.28 to the dollar. Bangladesh (Chattogram) slipped further, with levels down around 50 dollars per LDT from late Q4 highs and the taka near 122.30 to the dollar as uncertainty builds ahead of elections. Pakistan (Gadani) stayed close behind but most offers remained below 400 dollars per LDT, with the rupee near 280.62 to the dollar and limited HKC ready capacity still a key constraint. Turkey (Aliaga) stayed quiet with no reported sales and the lira near 43.03 to the dollar. Port position: Chattogram reported arrivals totaling about 39,560 LDT this week, while Alang and Gadani reported no new vessels.
