De Ghanese Kwasi Wiredu, die in 2022 overleed, was één van de grootste Afrikaanse filosofen van zijn generatie. Hij pleitte voor de dekolonisatie van het Afrikaanse denken en een ‘consensusmodel' voor postkoloniale Afrikaanse staten. Hij bestudeerde de filosofie onder de Akan, de grootste bevolkingsgroep in West-Afrika, waarin de vraag ‘wat maakt een biologisch mens tot een waarachtig persoon' centraal staat. In principe zit Akwasi Ansah al vanaf zijn veertiende in een never-ending-elevator. Hij begint op die leeftijd met rappen en richt vijf jaar later samen met producer Hayzee en rapper Leeroy het veel bekroonde hiphopcollectief Zwart Licht op.  Na de successen met het collectief gaat Akwasi solo verder en brengt in 2014 zijn debuutalbum 'Daar Ergens' uit. Hiervoor laat hij zich inspireren door wijlen zanger en cabaratier Bram Vermeulen. Zijn definitieve doorbraak bij het grote publiek komt met zijn tweede album 'Sankofa'. De keuze voor een solocarriere lijkt een schot in de roos, want in 2021 krijgt hij een prestigieuze Edison Award voor de clip van zijn song 'Extase'.  Inmiddels is de acteur, schrijver, woordkunstenaar en performer pur sang, niet weg te denken uit het collectieve geheugen. Zo is hij te zien in het theater en heeft hij rollen in series als Feuten, Toren C, De Vluchtkerk en Moordvrouw. In 2020 richtte Akwasi -samen met anderen- Omroep Zwart op en sindsdien is hij daar omroepbaas.  In Soul Stories ontvangt presentatrice Roeselien Wekker prominente tafelgasten die hun levenslessen en persoonlijke verhaal delen aan de hand van livemuziek en songteksten. Akwasi is rapper, acteur en dichter. Ter ere van de 30-jarige herdenking van de Bijlmer vliegramp gaat de documentaire Een gat in mijn hart in première op het Nederlands Film Festival. Toen Akwasi vier jaar oud was zag hij de vliegramp vanuit zijn huis. In de film onderzoekt hij die ervaring samen met andere leeftijdsgenoten uit de buurt. Akwasi studeerde af aan de Toneelacademie van Maastricht. Daarnaast brengt hij als solorapper muziek uit, onder anderen de gouden single Dorst. In 2018 verscheen zijn poëziebundel Laten we het er maar niet over hebben. Ook was hij in 2020 één van oprichters van Omroep ZWART. Femke van der Laan gaat met Akwasi in gesprek.

In 2018 Akwasi Frimpong became first black male Olympian to compete in skeleton, and the second athlete ever to represent Ghana in the Olympic winter games. He was the junior national champion sprinter in the Netherlands and a scholarship college athlete in the US as a sprinter. Evolving his explosive talent and speed he joined the Olympic bobsled team again with the Netherlands, but just missed the 2014 games. Now at age 35 Akwasi was poised to compete in Beijing, but the pandemic got in his way. His story is one of the complexity of navigating the global community in pursuit of a better life, education, and a dream.
