Welcome back to another exciting episode of "Mick Unplugged." I'm your host, Mick Hunt, and today, we have a true sports legend joining us—none other than Rick Barry. In this episode, we dive deep into Rick's storied basketball career and his transition to success in pickleball, where he's clinched numerous national championships. We explore his unique take on game fundamentals, including his famous underhand free throw technique, and his candid critique of modern NBA play. Rick shares nostalgic tales, like his missed 1964 Olympic opportunity, and opens up about his joy and pride in his sons' basketball careers, with special mention of Canyon Barry's impact on the 3x3 basketball scene. We also venture beyond the court as Rick discusses his new passion for pickleball, his entrepreneurial ventures like founding Pickle Zone, and his dedication to promoting health and wellness products. Plus, get insights into his lifelong love for fly fishing, his upcoming engagements in Australia and New Zealand, and his wishes for unity and progress in our country. It's a conversation filled with wisdom, nostalgia, and inspiration. So, stay tuned as we unplug with the one and only Rick Barry!Takeaways: · NBA teams should consider underhand free throw technique. · Competing in pickleball and winning national championships · Disappointment over not making the 1964 Olympic team Questions & Answers: 1. Question:Mick Hunt: Rick, you've been a vocal advocate for the underhand free-throw technique. Why do you think it's not more widely adopted in today's NBA, even though it has a proven high success rate? Rick Barry: Mick, it boils down to ego and aesthetics. Players don't want to be seen as 'unconventional' or 'old-fashioned.' Despite its effectiveness, the underhand technique has a stigma. My success rate with it was over 92%, which proves its value. It's a missed opportunity for many players today. 2. Question: Mick Hunt: You've mentioned that modern NBA players often lack deep understanding of game fundamentals. What specific fundamentals do you see as being most neglected? Rick Barry: players today often overlook positioning, screening, and teamwork dynamics. Natural talent is great, but without mastering these basics, it's hard to reach full potential. A strong foundation in fundamentals is crucial for long-term success in the game. 3. Question: Mick Hunt: Let's talk about officiating. You've criticized the leniency towards moving screens and carrying violations today. How do you think stricter officiating could impact the game? Rick Barry: Better officiating would enforce proper gameplay, improving the quality and fairness of basketball. Uncalled violations allow bad habits to persist, making games sloppier. Stricter calls might slow the game initially but would elevate overall play and skill levels in the long run. With increased attention and interest on women's college basketball, and an acknowledgement of the high level of play and skill, the hope is that women's basketball, soccer, and other sports, will get the attention and fan base they have deserved for years. But women's sports have been in the spotlight before. How is this moment similar, and different, to what we have seen in the past. What an honor to have with us this week, on the Rick Flynn Presents podcast, professional basketball star Dean Tolson a power forward and #20 for the Seattle Supersonics (Ret.). Dean Tolson was one of the top prep basketball players in the state of Missouri his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City. So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks' campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, ultimately playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master's degree and graduated magna cum laude. Tolson's gripping story from his childhood in an orphanage to his academic achievements is not only an indictment of a system that would just “pass you along” from grade to grade as a hot basketball prospect without any educational accountability, but also an inspiring story of overcoming great odds to find success. This an amazing book and is available on all outlets including Dean's website: www.DeanTolson.com. Fan mail and correspondence for Dean address below. Kent Washington made history by becoming the first American to play professional basketball behind the Iron Curtain. In his memoir, Kentomania, he recounts his journey from grade school, when he was known as Peanut, to become the first Black American to play professionally in the top league in Poland.Kent began to tap into his talent as a basketball player in junior and senior high school in New Rochelle, New York. His obsessive work ethic started to pay dividends as he elevated his game and became a college player at Southampton College in Long Island. During a basketball tour of communist Poland with his team in May 1976, Kent took the country by storm and became an overnight sensation. After finishing his education, he returned to Poland under contract to play professionally. The Polish press dubbed his popularity “Kentomania,” and fans lined the sidewalks hoping to get into a game to see him play – and to get his autograph.Kent's athletic and cultural journey is unique as shares insights on his life behind the Iron Curtain. Almost two years ago, we spoke with Seth McCoy, who is well known on Social Media as The 6ix Shooter!! That episode (which can be found here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/2SOWTy6h33pyzoekKEFPiH?si=18e67f983a564498) was a great way to learn about who Seth is and his backstory! Today, we are circling back and getting a follow up from that interview because SO MUCH has transpired since that time! I mean, we're talking about his world record attempt, which was the summer of 2023 where he attempted to break the world record for the most three point attempts made in a 24 hour span of time. Turns out, it's actually pretty tough on the body to attempt such a feat. And we'll hear about it from the man himself, and learn whether or not he plans to attempt it again! Seth has competed in professional basketball for the TBL with the Owensboro Thoroughbreds, he's competed in a 3 point competition which included a 6-figure cash prize, he's gone to All-Star Weekend in the NBA and was able to compete in a 3-Point Competition which he was able to win, and much more! In the meantime, he's continued to do his live streams on TikTok where as of THIS point he's been able to hit 100 three pointers in a row, 56 different times!! (At the time of this recording he was at 55, but less than 2 weeks later he hit his 56th time) The guy can shoot the ball! He knows what it takes to be consistent and he's showing that to the world. Has he almost 'normalized' hitting 100 threes in a row though? What does he need to do in order to get more recognition? It's almost as if people 'expect' that of him now, without realizing JUST HOW HARD that is to hit 100 threes in a row. Today we get to chat with him and catch up. And I truly hope you all enjoy the conversation with Seth! And I am going to tell you this, MAKE SURE, you hit him with that follow on all of his social platforms: Follow The 6ix Shooter: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@the6ixshooter Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the6ixshooter_/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@The6ixShooter Website: https://www.6ixshooteracademy.com/order-613924491707496304556 Also, there's an App in the App Store that has his shooting programs if you're looking for some awesome workouts and looking to improve your shooting. Valdosta State University history professor (and Episode 244 guest) Tom Aiello ("Dixieball: Race and Professional Basketball in the Deep South") returns after a two-year absence - for an enlightening look at the curious cultural history of the city of Atlanta's awkward relationship with professional hockey. In his new book "White Ice: Race and the Making of Atlanta Hockey," Aiello interestingly juxtaposes the National Hockey League's aggressive expansion in the late 1960s/early 1970s (including a new WHA-hastened Flames franchise in 1972), against the city's de facto status as the "capital of the Deep South" - and its population's rapidly changing racial and socio-economic contours. To wit: For its own part, Atlanta had been watching as White residents left the city for the suburbs over the course of the 1960s. As the turn of the decade approached, city leadership was searching for ways to mitigate white flight and bring residents of the surrounding suburbs back to the city center. So when a stereotypically White sport came to the Deep South in 1971 in the form of the Flames, ownership saw a new opportunity to appeal to White audiences. But the challenge would be selling a game that was foreign to most of Atlanta's longtime sports fans. Against that backdrop, of course, the Flames (1972-80) lasted but only eight seasons - and its NHL successor Atlanta Thrashers (1999-2011) did not fare much better in the face of similar and arguably even more pronounced circumstances. And yet, the "dream" of another franchise lives on. Might Atlanta get a third chance to finally make pro hockey stick? What's changed (and hasn't) in the region's demographic landscape and economic calculus? Listen in and find out! + + + SPONSOR THANKS: Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.royalretros.com/?aff=2 BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: White Ice: Race and the Making of Atlanta Hockey (2024): https://amzn.to/3vFQw5z FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram (+ Threads): https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable
