Winging It In Motown
So this is it. After 4 years and 76 episodes, we have recorded our final episode. Thankfully, we were able to close out the show with Jay returning for the final episode to join Sara and me. The first segment focuses on why I am leaving Winging it in Motown after five years, and mostly, why I decided to end the podcast. We talked about the recent horrible events in NHL news that have made me feel this way, and Jay and Sara shared their thoughts about it all. We wanted the majority of the show to be fun, though! So the second segment is a look back on our favorite moments from the four years of doing the show. The third segment features a few mailbag questions that we sort of answered, but had a lot of fun with. Then we closed out with one final game. I hope you enjoy playing along with Jay and Sara as they try to determine which questions are shocking moments in video game history and which ones I made up in the game “The Shock and the Spurious.” If you are using a podcast app, you can find both this podcast and WIIM Radio (our podcast devoted to the Red Wings) in the same channel - Winging it in Motown. They have to guess if a name is a ballet dancer from a Russian Ballet Company or a member of the 2010 U-18 Russian Hockey Team. Of course Sara thought of the name “Plie-r or Player” after, which is annoying because it’s clearly better. Welcome to the latest edition of WIIM Radio! Skeleton crew for this one as it’s just me and Sara holding it down. Here’s what we got up to. The outlook for the rest of the season: We help assuage everybody’s concerns that a winning steak similar to last season’s is going to make much of a difference with just 31 games left and 13 standings points to make up, but first we have to, you know, actually win games. Trade deadline speculation: Honestly not a lot to get excited about with this year’s trade deadline, but you never can tell with Steve Yzerman running the show nowadays. Will we see any midnight wheelings and dealings? The All Star Game: It’s become more fashionable in the last few years to loudly proclaim a disinterest or even flat-out disdain for the ASG, but we got to the heart of why so many hockey fans would rather spend the time gardening (or simply just not paying attention to hockey). Reader Questions: All the puntential of the Seattle team name rumors and a look at strengths & weaknesses in the depth chart. Plus, we take a look back at the goaltending performance OF THE DECADE. Around the league: Wanna know the three teams we hate the least out of the ten-best squads in the NHL? Sure you do! You can listen via the embedded player above or download on your favorite podcasting app. For a small fee, I’ll personally transcribe the entire episode and mail it to you glued onto acorns. Welcome to the newest edition of WIIM Radio. We’re back with J.J., Kyle, and Prashanth talking all things Wings. Here’s what we got up to: The Babcock Fallout - we went in-depth on how much it shakes things to think back on what recent news does to our opinions on the team during what we thought were pretty golden years. The Team as it Stands - With the Wings mired in Stench, we go in depth about what can be done to move forward and whether the fire Blashill calls would satisfy long or short term goals. What's best with Zadina - Should he stay or should he go? How best to develop the youngster and to ensure the team can afford him when he is developed. Prashanth brings and interesting argument in favor of burning this ELC year. Reader Questions - Ever wondered about robot brains and Rat King from TMNT? You will! (We couldn’t get detailed timestamps done for this episode, but we will try to bring them back for next time. ) You can listen via the embedded player above or download from your favorite podcasting app. Be sure to check out our channel for past episodes and for our wider-focused NHL podcast, Fer Sure. Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the ads because they are put in after we upload the episode) CORRECTION! I say in the episode that Anthony Mantha broke his hand on Adam Erne’s head, but it was Patrik Nemeth. I feel the appropriate amount of shame for making that mistake (very little.) Intro: We re-introduce our listeners to Hannah and Meghan and catch up with what they have been up to recently. Last Quick Cherry Thoughts (8:58 - 10:00) - By now we know it’s time to move on from the Don Cherry discussion, but since Jay wasn’t on WIIM Radio last episode, he wanted to say a couple words. (pretty much literally one minute of words). Babcock Bounced (10:00 - 25:22) - This was the big news in the NHL of late, and we talk about it for a while. Meghan follows Toronto, but I can vouch that she is not part of the annoying Toronto fanbase online, so she has some insights. Reader Question (25:22 - 33:50) - We had one reader question, and it was a tough one! How Buffalo Will They Go? (33:50 - 38:00) - We wanted to talk to Hannah about Buffalo, even though she’s rather we didn’t. Jersey Fouls (38:00 - 47:33) - L.A. and Colorado unveiled their stadium series jerseys. Woof. Game Time! (47:33 - 53:21) - We play a game based on Hannah’s recent major life event. Thanksgiving (53:21 - END) - We go around and discuss hockey related things we are thankful for. ------------------------------------------------------ If you are using a podcast app, you can find both this podcast and WIIM Radio (our podcast devoted to the Red Wings) in the same channel - Winging it in Motown. Welcome to the newest edition of WIIM Radio! Same lineup as last episode, but much more flavor! Here’s what we got up to: Three Game Win Streak! - Detroit overcame what looked like another collapse in Anaheim and pulled off the late-night victory. Turning point? Oh why the hell not. Blashill, Challenges, and the Goalies - Did the team rally for Blash on the latest bad coach’s challenge? How have the Wings been supporting their goalies. Pete’s got the answers you crave. The Don Cherry Situation - If you’re raw about the guy’s firing, you’re probably not going to make it through this segment. If that’s the case, then I’m sorry. Reader Questions - You all knocked it out of the park again with some great questions. We go over the danger of the Hicketts mafia and the danger of touching Ryan Getzlaf with your bare hands, plus much more! Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the ads because they are put in after we upload the episode) Around the League: (00:00 - 12:03) What are the most interesting stories so far? Interview: (12:03 - 43:22) We talked to Dom Luszczyszyn about his work for The Athletic, the NHL, and even a little bit about how crazy Riverdale is. Winter Classic Jerseys: (43:22 - END) Why does Peter say that the Stars logo could say Star Doctors? You’ll have to look at the logo. Welcome to the latest edition of WIIM Radio! October is at an end and the Wings are pretty much where we expected them to be. We still love our guys though, so I’m joined by Sara and Peter to talk all things Wings for our newest episode. Here’s what we got up to: Reader Questions: Much like that guy who lost the World Series, we threw a curveball out and decided to start with the reader questions because there was a really good variety of questions that we wanted to make sure we got covered, so we started with. Topics including the prospect pipeline, goalies, Perlini, hopes and dreams, Mantha, AA, Cholowski and holy moly there’s a lot of ground covered. The Svetch-Up/Svetch-Down: We got a very brief glimpse of Evgeny Svechnikov with the big team playing limited minutes before being sent down... but the timing of the send-down is rubbing some the wrong way. What is it in the organization that makes them pull kids out of games that would be meaningful for them? Looking Ahead: The Wings have six games coming up before heading to the West coast. Let’s see who the most-optimistic about that stretch turns out to be. Coach or Captain: I’ve got a dumb hypothetical to talk about in regards to how the team has been playing. I think I know the answer, but I want to give my linemates the opportunity to once again prove they’re smarter than I am. Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the ads because they are put in after we upload the episode) Around the League: (00:00 - 27:14) Which teams and players are off to good starts, and which ones are sustainable? Interview: (27:14 - 1:05:08) Chris Watkins returns for round 3. We keep having him back because he is so fun to talk to and has such great information, and this was no exception. Heritage Classic Promotion and Jay Goes to Toronto: (1:05:08 - END) What if the NHL played an outdoor game, and many people had no idea it was happening? Welcome to the newest edition of WIIM Radio! We’re early in the 2019-20 season and the Wings are off to... a start! This episode I’m joined by Peter and Sara to go through early impressions. Here’s what we got into. The Wings so Far: The team has looked almost too much like we expected, with high energy and excitement from the kids and also plenty of mistakes to remind us that they’re still kids. Mostly we’re here for the love-fest for the top line. We break down what it is that we love about it. We also have to talk about what’s going on with the depth and the defense. The Mike Green Problem: An elder skatesman on the Red Wings blueline has not looked good to start the season. The truth is he looks a lot like he did last season too. What’s going on with this guy? He Aint Svechnikon: We try to figure out the mystery of why Svechnikov would be around the team for so long without getting into games. Around the League: Gus Nyquist throwing shaaaaade and our peek around the standings at which non-Wings teams we hate more than all the other non-Wings teams. You can listen via the embedded player or find us on your favorite podcast app (as long as your favorite podcast app isn’t some rando stupid Zune bullshit). Thanks and LGRW! Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad): WARNING: We typically have no explicit language, but near the end of the interview, we each say a very bad word ;) Season Preview - Eastern Conference: (00:00 - 19:30) I mean, the title pretty much says it all. We take a look at the Eastern Conference for predictions of what will happen. Interview: (19:30 - 56:20) We talk to Steph Driver about the Flyers' future, Gritty, and other topics. Then we play a game called Baby Goalie Driver. Season Preview - Western Conference: (56:20 - END) Same as before the interview, but this time we take a look at the Western Conference. It’s a new season of Red Wings hockey and a new season of WIIM Radio for your listening pleasure. To get this season preview rolling, I was hosted by the always excellent Peter as we tag-teamed the topics nearest and dearest to our hearts. Here’s what we got up to: Thoughts from Preseason: Biggest positive (and negative) surprises from the full slate of preseason games for the Wings, to include the status of the defense, Cholowski’s big step forward, the big concern about Frans Nielsen and overall team health, and the struggle with wanting the team to be good and wanting to keep on the right rebuild track. The Roster Construction: We don’t outright say it, but Grand Rapids might be more fun to watch early on than Detroit. We’ve seem Yzerman construct AHL teams like this before in Syracuse and it very much looks like the kids are going to get the kind of experience to help develop their game rather than the tired old “learn how to be an AHL champ” company line we’ve been given. Season Expectations: While neither of us expects the Wings to be contenders, there’s a lot of variance in how this season could go. They should be fun to watch for much longer than they have been in years past at least. We also delve into what we’re looking for out of the power play and what kind of leash we expect Jeff Blashill to have now that his clone Dan Bylsma is slowly morphing into him. Reader Questions: Your favorite part and mine, as always the reader questions bring all the best stuff including a very sad FMK and a discussion on most-handsome that I feel very strongly about. Finally ICYMI - check out the WIIM Charity challenge You can listen via the embedded player and subscribe using your favorite podcast app. Thanks for listening and LGRW! Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad): Rule Changes!: (00:00 - 15:00) The NHL has released some rule changes. Here’s what we think about them. Winter Classic Logo: (15:00 - 19:51) Dallas has released their Winter Classic logo. Jay of course has some thoughts, but this time, so does Peter. Interview: (19:51 - 55:22) We talk to Sean Tierney about a wide range of issues. From his childhood growing up selling hockey cards to his adulthood making data visualizations for the masses. RFA Signings: (55:22 - 1:16:00) - A lot of the big name RFAs signed by the time we recorded this, so we run them down. Auston Mathews and Closing: (1:16:00 - END) - We discuss how the Auston Matthews news is worse than some people have made it out to be. If you are using a podcast app, you can find both this podcast and WIIM Radio (our podcast devoted to the Red Wings) in the same channel - Winging it in Motown. Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad): Let's Fix Hockey!: (00:00 - 27:52) We talk about Greg Wyshynski's article on how to make the fan experience better. Interview: (27:52 - 1:01:59) Laura Astorian from St. Louis Game Time joins us to talk about what it's like for long-suffering fans to win the Stanley Cup and what to expect from the Blues this season. NHL 20 Ratings: (1:011:59 - End) We talk a little bit about the NHL 20 player ratings, but not very much if you aren't into that whole thing. If you are using a podcast app, you can find both this podcast and WIIM Radio (our podcast devoted to the Red Wings) in the same channel - Winging it in Motown. Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad): We're Such Tools: (00:00 - 05:05) Peter and guest Scott Matla are excited about a band they like finally being available on Spotify. Fenton Fired!: (05:05 - 16:58) The Wild fired their GM after one season, and shortly before we started recording, a story came out that detailed some truly wild events that led to his dismissal. In a perfect world, we would have had more time to read the article before discussing it, but you get the gist of it. More Marner: (16:58 - 33:22) It's been dragging on for what seems like forever, but there's finally some news in the Mitch Marner contract negotiations. It's holding up a lot of other RFAs, and it's creating quite a roadblock. NHL20 Beta and a Game: (33:22 - End) The NHL20 Beta is on, and since Scott has played it as well, we figured it was good to talk about our thoughts. Then, we finish with a game called Chess or Czechers! If you are using a podcast app, you can find both this podcast and WIIM Radio (our podcast devoted to the Red Wings) in the same channel - Winging it in Motown. Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad): Offer Sheets Schmoffer Sheets: (00:00 - 30:30) We talk about the Sebastian Aho offer sheet, Mitch Marner, and the potential of other offer sheets. Interview: (30:30 - 1:05:57) We talk to Shayna Goldman about the Rangers and their summer acquisitions. Free Agency: (1:05:57 - End) July 1st has come and gone, and we have a quick breakdown of the major signings. Here’s what Peter, JJ, and Sara covered in this episode. The Draft: Moritz “lots of up” Seider was probably a reach... or not... or who cares? The Wings drafted him and now we all love him. He’s not the only kid we grabbed though. We’ll get draft reactions from the crew. The Yzermandate: Stevie fired a scout and hired his brother. Is this the new Keith Gretzky era? Is the Swedish Mafia slowly being replaced by the Yzermen? What’s the plan going forward? Free Agent Frenzy: Detroit had money to dip in the pool and spent a little bit on some stopgap pieces, which almost certainly belies the timeline. We’ll go over what the Wings did (and didn’t do) on July 1st and discuss what’s still to come. Around the League in RFAs: Plenty of money got spend, some of it was on Sebasian Aho. We finally got an offer sheet! Is that an under-utilized market inefficiency we’ve seen exploited or just a product of a situation unique to this year? Reader Questions: Make sure to ask anything your heart desires so we don’t miss answering your best questions. Despite everything, still my favorite part of every episode. You can listen via the embedded player above or download directly from our archive page. You can also find us on your favorite podcast streaming apps. For a million dollars, I’ll fly to your house and perform it as a shadow puppet show. It seems like the podcast platform doesn’t always put ads in where we have ad breaks, so if you’re wondering why in some cases there is an ad break with no ad that’s why. Here's what Peter, JJ, Sara, and Dr. Dangles covered in this episode. Draft Primer: Just in case ANYBODY has been living under a rock waiting for WIIM Radio to explain the basics, we’ll start off covering where we are and the tier of players the Wings can expect to be looking at with their first rounder. As an added bonus, we had a poll down in the mailbag that we will talk about. Draft Strategy: Should the Wings consider moving up or down in the first round? What about moving around by potentially moving back or using some of their later-round draft stock (and/or some of their potential cap space) to pick up some added value? The Later Rounds: We’ve talked to death about the guys expected to go early in the first, but want to take an opportunity to look deeper into the draft pool and figure out what the Wings might want to do with those later round picks to parse which guys fit those needs. Peter and Dr. Dangles have a few players to keep an eye on in the later rounds. Reader Questions: You asked, we answered. Well, at least most of them. Some weren't questions. Here’s what Peter and Jay have for you this time (all time locations are without the opening ad): Draft Interview One: (00:00 - 1:00:17) We start by talking to Dylan Galloway, the head scout for Eastern Canada for Future Considerations and Will, who runs the prospect site Scouching. Draft Interview Two: (1:00:17 - END) This was a simple episode, just talking about the draft. We were joined by WIIM prospect expert Dr. Dangles. Interview: (30:42 - 1:10:50) Sie Morley returns to talk about the San Jose Sharks and joins Jay and Peter in brainstorming new names for some NHL teams. Wait, People Are Listening to Gloria....on Purpose?: (1:10:50 - END) St. Louis fans have adopted a terrible song as their hype song, so we talk about what the three remaining teams should do in response. Interview: (30:42 - 1:02:37) We talked to Alison Lukan, the beat writer for the Columbus Blue Jackets for The Athletic. We talked about their first round series sweep of Tampa, what it’s like making sure that you don’t go viral while covering John Tortorella, and we play a fun game! Welcome to the newest edition of WIIM Radio! Steve Yzerman returned, just like we always knew would happen and never doubted, even for a second. Joining me for this episode was Prashanth and JJ. Happy Leafs Elimination Day!: It was the loss that launched 1,000 memes. Toronto couldn’t win a game 7 (again), and the knives are out for Mike Babcock. Playoff Predictions (Revamped): Now that most people’s brackets are busted, what do we think is going to happen the rest of the way in the battle for Lord Stanley’s Cup? You’re definitely going to want to make major bets using this information because we have all been completely right so far. The Return - First Reactions: Steve Yzerman is home where he belongs. How did we feel when we heard the news? How Does This Change The Plan?: How does the return of Yzerman change things going forward for Detroit? Or does it? The Press Conference: On the day his hiring was announced, Yzerman answered some questions, Chris Ilitch talked entirely too much, and Ken Holland looked emotional. We break down the biggest moments from the press conference, as well as take a moment to look at Holland’s legacy. But How Does This Affect The Leafs Blashill?” We didn’t do a mailbag for this episode, but former WIIM Radio host Jeff had a question about the future relationship between coach Jeff Blashill and Yzerman. NHL Playoffs: (28:00 - 53:25) We transition to talking about the latest in the NHL playoffs (as of about 8pm Saturday evening.) At the end of this segment, we ask a fan question about Filip Zadina. Lott or Not: (53:25 - END) It’s been a while since we had a game, so Peter made up a game for Jay and Max. There’s even some new “game time” intro music. Welcome to our last WIIM Radio Mailbag of the 2018-19 regular season. We took a bit of a hiatus with not much to talk about, but as the Wings finish out the season strong, we’ll have lots to get into. Here’s a rundown of topics: The Tank vs. The Culture: we’ll try not to dwell on this argument too long, since the fanbase has been doing it for weeks now, but it IS the hottest topic in Wings land and it will give us an opportunity to gush over how the Wings are being led by a bunch of wonderful children. The Future and the Rebuild: Seems only natural to transition into discussions of next season and beyond for where the Wings stand. Probably a good time to talk the Blashill extension too. Playoff Predictions: We still don’t know who’s all making the playoffs, but I’m not waiting on all those other jerk teams to make guesses on what’s going to happen in the postseason. You’ll get the stone cold locks straight from us. Reader Questions: Your favorite segment and mine - you ask the best questions and we give you at least the third-best answers. We’ll be recording late this evening, so get your questions in and be ready for the download to be available early tomorrow morning. Thanks an LGRW! Learn more about your ad choices. Interview: (30:12 - 1:03:08) Joining us for a second time is hockey journalist Scott Cullen. We talk about the playoff picture, going from TSN to The Athletic and NHL.com, and what he would want to write about if he couldn’t write about hockey.
