JB:How’d you end up in sales?MM:Stumbled into sales Selling bathing suits at 15 in FL- getting people in suits they love the fit!College- worked as leasing agent almost full time throughout collegeMoved into COmmission only sales - ROUGHBDR role is tough in tech, but can be a lot harder as commission only rep with NO resources, sink or swim environment- if you didn’t sell, you didn’t get paid and can’t pay rentNeed to learn from the best people, get hungry and get grittySales training- getting into SaaS selling $30K deals vs. $30 swimsuitsMOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!Finding patterns, documenting them.  Was in a role as the only sales person after everyone quit ....”why can’t we attract and retain salespeople??” there was NO TRAININGJB:Wow love these thoughts and the journey through sales.  The vast majority of people I’ve interviewed don’t know what’s working or what they’ve done.  Such good points and a great sales story for us to unpack!MM:How do we build training for all of the types of sellers3 different groups in sales teams, Middle of the pack, Still figuring it out & Peak performersThe beauty and challenge of sales it restarts every month/quarter/yearPeak PerformersHow do we get the peak performers that edge? How do we get them to perform even higher? As leaders, we see that person as good, making money and we realize they didn’t have upward mobility, thought they were happy but got complacent and they leave!I went into sales training with a lot of assumptions to test and completely debunkWhen I went into sales training, I thought everyone was LIKE ME- Hungry, eager to learn, gave them the training/tips/tactics/support that they would crush it….and that didn’t happen! We have a new tool. It's going to be amazing, but why aren’t people using it?First thing is understanding the mindset going into sales.  Are they open to training? Are they open to resources?Give those sellers the WHY beyond; “you’re not going to get commission”Sales people are really creative.  When you tell sellers to do something you find all the ways you can see how sellers get to acting like they did something. Give them their why? How do we understand their true motivation? It’s usually not money, because it’s a means to an end.  It could be Mastery. Family. Travel. Mindset is the first thing I had to rethink as I started building sales training programs. I did a lot of things that didn’t work and miserably failed myself and had to adjust. Many sales leaders donJB: So much training focuses on the tactic or the thing and yet most managers only tell their reps to dial the phone more and yet it’s not really effective at all because most hires realize and know that dialing the phone more will make them more $$. MM:The thing around dialing and activity is one of the top reasons reps don’t trust their managers. So many times people are exhausted from hearing DO MORE DO MORE DO MORE, it really is the embodiment of the Hustle Culture. People are sick of hearing DO MOREThe best salespeople are problem solvers, they have natural curiosity. Exhausted of hearing do more and not seeing the results. They lose trust because they look at the numbers and see the best BDRs aren’t the one dialing the most. Clients come to me and say I hear do more and it’s not activity based. It’s a fine line, we know/studies show and natural intuition is obvious that we know if you do more, you will get more resultsIf you can get people to align with a strategy, most sellers want to learn WHY things work and it’s one of the best ways to motivate people.I see you’re good on the activity and lean into the STRATEGY In QBRs with teams (QBR Meg) - Training on how to do a 10-K Report - running through office but top seller had a quick question about 10-K, found something interesting between training that give the seller a new strategy or new way to approach an account to motivate them to be betterTo take someone from really good to great, having more moments of just being good and hitting quota can motivate, inspire and truly leadJB:100% is just doing your jobMM:The story that inspired The Path to President’s ClubMid-market team was between BDRs and senior sellers trained people. Manager quit right after a cycle of promotions, 5 people just got promoted and the manager quit. Took on a lot of responsibilities and learned a lot. Ask the team members, hey what do you want to achieve?  100% to quota…..no no what do you REALLY want to achieve?Went to a former mentor from MSFT, who had a former manager who didn’t push past 100%. Created this coaching slide. Ask people - what’s your mission statement? Who are YOU as a person?  Not just as a seller.Asking people they had never been asked before. What are your goals(not just quota)? What are the goals you haven’t told anyone because you’re scared they’re going to tell you is not realistic but really lights you up inside?Because sales is so focused on lagging indicators of success, are you hitting quota or not?HItting your quota isn’t a superpowerStarted having really open conversation3 up 3 down - after every sales call 3 things that went well and 3 things that could be betterOur conversations about feedback are typically about going on a PIPOne rep that would live at my desk, ask questions every single day, open o so many things….last company president’s club was Quota attainment based upon your number. I want to be the first person from this team ever to make it to president’s club $100K my first quarter---- a little crazy and let’s go for it!Fell short, only sold $87K!  Now let’s readjust, hit 100% in October then started to focus on new post-it notes on his desk and had 2 new ones.  PC & SPOY - worked his butt off, hit PC, missed SPOY was 3rdThese incredible stories of motivation. It’s not that difficult if you have a framework.Managers are so focused on quota/close rateJB: You weren’t the manager, was it easier to have that conversation?MM:Lots of sales managers look at training/enablement to get the stuff doneI want to be in a position where you can work with people to have conversations I don’t have with the reps. I think the reason why a lot of managers struggle to enable people. A lot of times the way we train people is so SHADOWbased- follow some people around and you’ll pick it up.  Most of the time it’s actually matching and mirroring. A lot of times people copy others vs. understand the STRATEGY/why. COACHING TEMPLATE AND FRAMEWORKWork with sales teams and define the top strengths and weaknesses we should be building in peopleWhat are the competencies for reps, BDRs and senior sales people moving towards managementBuild custom coaching frameworks that give them the list of all the things they can choose form and can self-assessWhat I see happening a lot of times in interviews and conversations with sales reps. They think they are doing a lot better than they are because they are only looking at sales numbers when managers have fears about the person’s ability to lead, have EQ, manage up.Performance falls into 3 buckets. Lagging indicators, performance metricsHow are you evaluating organizational values - how do we build more inclusive and supportive sales culturesCompetencies and skill sets - leading indicators of the leggings KPIsImagine if sales leaders had a more cohesive and comprehensive way of assessing performanceWhat if we had more direct conversations with reps about those things?JB: What has prevented this from happening in sales conversations in the past? MM:Been with sellers who don’t feel supportMost sales leaders are not going into sales thinking they don’t want to help their team, they are doing their bestWalk into work 1 day, have a territory, have a quotaPromoted, now walk into work, new desk, now 7 quotas, 7 different people -- but most people aren’t getting MANAGEMENT trainingMost training is for tactical individual sellingNeed to build empathy for managers - managers are managed and reported in the exact same way with lagging indicatorsThe strategy piece is the 110% In today’s sales management world actually training and supporting your reps is seen as going above and beyond...that needs to be totally flipped on its head. Lots of HR background but HR is not Sales, they are not sales training, they don’t know what it’s like to hold a quota over your head and start over every quarter. Create resources for the seller that I’ve been. I also know what it’s like to walk into a sales leadership meeting and look at all the challenges that other teams tell you and see you’re not hitting goals without knowing your own weaknesses, very similar challenges that aren’t talked aboutBetter coaching, better support and bettJB: Talk to me about humanity and vulnerability in salesMM: It’s so challenging to train people.  It goes back to that HUMAN element - BDR had been in the role for 2 years, CRUSHING it and just moved to a partnership role, go to all SMEs ask for resources, get a lay of the land, the rep learned a lot about management and mentorship by making a mistake. 1 year into the role, had templates and had people asking for her help. She just gave them the resources, the templates she was using. Started talking to these people and they were using the EXACT same template form a year ago, but she hadn’t taught them the HOW AND WHY for them to create their own approach. We don’t know what we don’t know! Most managers struggle where they’re not trying to NOT train or coach and don’t get why it’s not workingVulnerability piece is SO hard and it’s so easy to get frustrated.  But we as sales leaders need to recognize that Humans are Humans. Curse of Knowledge- as you get more advanced in your career it’s really easy to forget what it’s like to be that person who doesn’t knowWe need to have more empathy. WE need to make it OK to make mistakes. We need to encourage curiosity and empathy. Just as much as we encourage competition and collaboration as well as Grit.Vulnerability is the human trait I would like to see the most moving out of 2020 into 2021JB:Wow I’ve definitely seen this in the best leaders I’ve got to work with. What are the top qualities in leaders that you’ve worked with and want to emulate?MM: 1. Vulnerability - our current sales culture doesn’t leave space. It’s constantly so defensive (why aren’t you hitting? What’s missing here?) We are typically not met with empathy as a sales leader2. Empathy & EQ - should the manager be authoritarian - i want to be the person you come to with fears and challenges - Emotionally intelligent leaders go through to different leaders and progress in their careers and then come back to the leader with the emotional intelligence3. Transparency- without it, there’s no trust. We had to tell people I don’t have all the answers. Transparency is required to be vulnerable and to have high EQ. They see inherent risk involved in being JB: How do you bounce back?MM:Even as a consultant I have a business coach, I have mentors. A lot of people think entrepreneurs do it all on their own. It’s impossible to do it ALL on your own. I would encourage everyone to seek external mentorship, it’s very easy these days. RevGeniuns, Revenue Collective, Clubhouse making people really accessible (go find that person on LinkedIn and reference what you heard) Addicted to sticky notes, probably 40 around me at all times with Mantras that I’m working on. I’m not perfect, this was not ideal, or this didn’t work…..AND THAT’S OK!On my coaching sheet I have helpful quotes and mantras with mentors you can work with in specific areas5 Minute journal and gratitude journal to start everyday. Surround myself with people that lift me up and get me in the right mindset to get through tough months. JB: Morning routines and habitsMM:I’ve heard a lot of people share ideas that don’t work for me. And I believe discipline is important.FlexiplineI struggle with focus - 50 things I would LOVE to do but I’m always looking at - Mantra-- will this get me to the next $50K?List top priorities everydayREST- in such a hustle culture of sales, rest is critical, practicing self-love and healing to start everyday freshExternal mentorship group she runs. "There is no poverty worse than that which takes away work and the dignity of work. In a genuinely developed society, work is an essential dimension of social life, for it is not only a means of earning one's daily bread, but also of personal growth, the building of healthy relationships, self-expression and the exchange of gifts. Work gives us a sense of shared responsibility for the development of the world, and ultimately, for our life as a people." (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti 162)In the resurgence of worldwide populism, Pope Francis has said that employment is the biggest issue. And because of the global pandemic, work has become a fraught and challenging part of life. In this episode, Father Martin Schlag explores the concept of work in Fratelli Tutti, explaining the Catholic social ethic of the dignity of work and inclusion of all people into the human economy; the Pope's perspective on private property and the suggestion that “the world exists for us all”; and the relevance of Catholic social thought and Fratelli Tutti for businesspeople, with a vision of work grounded in friendship, responsibility, dignity, justice, and love. Interview by Ryan McAnnally-Linz.Support For the Life of the World by making a gift to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: faith.yale.edu/give Show NotesRead Fratelli Tutti in its entirety online hereFratelli Tutti is basically a summary of all of Pope Francis's teaching.Pope Francis on politics and love: “The biggest issue is employment.""Bread and work”Psychological and sociological catastrophe of long term widespread unemploymentPope Francis defines poverty as the exclusion of the dignity of earning one's own breadLeft and Right are categories that don't work for the Catholic social tradition.Dignity and Catholic Social Ethics and Anthropology—labor and the common goodHuman dignity is grounded in the Image of God, as a representative of the absolute and unconditional; never as a means, always as an endHuman dignity formulated as friendship or fraternityThe right to work and rights in work: access, just wage, safety, rest, social security (health care, insurance, retirement benefits)Christian perspectives on private property: St. John Chrysostom, St. Basil, St. Gregory—“your affluence belongs to the poor"Not communism but generosity and sharingPrivate Property: One of the most striking passages for the outside readerTwo Christian perspectives on private property: (1) Augustinian strand—private property as consequence of original sin and is regulated only by human law; “in paradise there was no private property” / (2) Aristotelian/Thomist tradition—private property is derived from natural law and the common good (this is the dominant Catholic tradition)Absolute vs Derived Rights. Property is a secondary, or derived, right.Property has a social mortgage, creates responsibility Horizontal vs Vertical dimensions of private propertyVertical dimension of private property: “The world exists for us all”; the universal destination of all goods;Horizontal dimension of private property: 7th commandment presupposes private property (“Thou shall not steal”); under human society, private property exists and needs to be protected by laws“We belong to the whole.” Aquinas: Human beings exist as part of a whole, a human being stops being a human being when they leave the polis/community or whole. Aquinas corrects that: Only to God do we belong.Catholic social teaching has four big principles: Human dignity, Common good, Solidarity, SubsidiarityAll people of good will. What two or three big takeaways are available for someone who does own property/business person? No to the idolatry of money. You need money in the world, but it's only a means to an end, like gas in a carFriendship: How can you create meaningful work for others and yourself, creating variety of tasks, giving significance, give recognition, empowered, autonomously?Oppose elitism and false universalism: does my business have an inclusive mechanism, do we listen, have regular debates, does everyone contribute to decision making?Where societal change comes from: not come from the elites but from the peripheries “The People”What does a fraternal society look like in Pope Francis' imagination?Consider the French revolution: "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”—liberalism built a politics on liberty; socialism built a politics on equality; but who has built a politics on fraternity?“Good politics combines love with hope and with confidence in the reserves of goodness present in human hearts.” (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti 197)'At times, in thinking of the future, we do well to ask ourselves, “Why I am doing this?”, “What is my real aim?” For as time goes on, reflecting on the past, the questions will not be: “How many people endorsed me?”, “How many voted for me?”, “How many had a positive image of me?” The real, and potentially painful, questions will be, “How much love did I put into my work?” “What did I do for the progress of our people?” “What mark did I leave on the life of society?” “What real bonds did I create?” “What positive forces did I unleash?” “How much social peace did I sow?” “What good did I achieve in the position that was entrusted to me?”' (Pope Francis, Fratelli Tutti 197)About Father Martin SchlagFather Martin Schlag is Alan W. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk: true-life, practical, funny, heart-breaking, insightful human experience stories from women who are walking their lives while their lives walk them and the lasting difference these journeys have made. You’ll recognize yourself in stories of adversity, challenge, fear, discovery, adventure, expression, and more. Why? Because, the sorcery of stories is this: they help each of us to be seen and heard, to understand and be understood. I’m your host, Diane Wyzga.Today my guest is Lisa Morales who’s joining us from Back East on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Lisa and I share a deep affection for the Camino de Santiago, all things pilgrim, and showing up, saying “Yes!” to the hand we are dealt. I’ve invited Lisa to walk with us and talk about the Life ups and down that led her to walking the Camino, serving as a hospitalera or hostess in an albergue or hostel, her photography, and what comes next.  Welcome to the podcast, Lisa!Minutes: 33:2300 to 2:10 IntroStart From Where You Are2:10 to 9:35  Walking Together 1. He became very ill in Bilbao, but we hit the road again after hospitalization. I became injured in Ribadeo, and he marked the map where we would take up the endeavor again 18 months later. The Camino became all-encompassing. I began volunteering as hospitalera, walking more routes, and turning my first brand-new camera toward the people and places along The Way. I mentor new pilgrims here at home, and counsel returning pilgrims about integrating their camino into their “real lives.”About to become an empty-nester for the second time in 22 years, I know only that the Camino, and creating art are in my future.  With Covid raging and my travel confined to the USA, I am seeing the great outdoors from the comfort of my tiny teardrop trailer, photographically documenting this astounding and disturbing moment in our history, until the Camino calls again. How to Contact and Stay In Touch with Lisahttps://lisamorales.myportfolio.com/https://www.lisamorales.com/https://twitter.com/LMoralesPhotohttps://www.pinterest.com/LisaMoralesPhoto/https://www.facebook.com/lisamoralesphoto/https://www.instagram.com/lisamoralesphoto/https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisalmorales/

The Amazing Grace of GodTitus 2:11-15 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Titus%202%3A11-15&version=NIV11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” toungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this presentage, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a peoplethat are his very own, eager to do what is good.15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”Bottom Line for this message” Grace has a Face”Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.1. First, the use of the word “for” connects this verse to the previous verses. Because we are therecipients of God's grace and salvation, we should reflect the values and engage the behaviorsthat Paul promoted in verses 2-10.Paul previously discussed preaching, leadership and teaching, all of which is important to the Christianlifestyle (making disciples who make disciples), but what God does in verse 11 can be summed up in onework: GRACE2. What is grace?1. Many say “unmerited favor” or “God's favorable attitude towards us”, but these definitionsare too abstract relative to this verse. Websters has several definitions, but Websters doesn'tdefine Grace for us, God does. The grace of God is an ACTION, not an ABSTRACTION. It's a PERSON, not a CONCEPT.1. Grace is an actual event in space and time. Grace has a face – Jesus ChristScarred, bloody and in agonyA face of the person that suffered and died on the cross for your sins and mineA face of grace- bringing salvation to all people3. Grace isn't cheap…it comes at such a great cost, but our modern theology sometimesattempts to cheapen it by offering people what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace”:Cheap grace is: the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentanceBaptism without church disciplineCommunion without repentanceAbsolution without personal confessionOne thing that I believe has made Grace appear cheaper is the modern American church.- Modern American church grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are. The coffee's on us, sitback and relax…and don't worry about changing. We couldn't ask you to do that. We don't wantto offend you.”- Grace says: “all are welcome. Come as you are and be prepared and willing for God to changeyou. Because when you recognize the true cost of grace, you recognize that it is a debt that youcannot pay, and you are compelled to change…out of gratitude. You will have to die to yourself.Be prepared to sacrifice parts of your sinful lifelstyle that the world accepts, and says it's OK, butGod doesn't.”Galatians 5:24 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+5%3A24&version=NIV24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.Grace says “I created man and woman”. Modern American grace says “it's all good…whatever you wantto be. God probably made a mistake” in an effort to avoid looking intolerant.God says “I created marriage between a man and a woman”. Modern American grace says “it's allgood…marry who you want. Who are we to judge? Besides, our numbers are low”.God says “I knit babies together in their mother's wombs”. Modern American grace says “It's a woman'sbody and she has right to choose”. Who are we to judge?Bonnhoeffer went on to say:“Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a man will go and sell all that he has. Itis the pearl of great price to buy for which the merchant will sell all his goods. It is the kingly rule ofChrist, for whose sake a man will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble; it is the call of JesusChrist at which the disciple leaves his nets and follows him.”“Such grace is costly because it calls us to follow, and it is grace because it calls us to follow Jesus Christ. It is costly because it costs a man his life, and it is grace because it gives a man the only true life. It iscostly because it condemns sin, and grace because it justifies the sinner. Above all, it is costly because itcost God the life of his Son: "ye were bought at a price," and what has cost God much cannot be cheapfor us. Above all, it is grace because God did not reckon his Son too dear a price to pay for our life, butdelivered him up for us. Costly grace is the Incarnation of God.”Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of DiscipleshipIt's not popular to say that Jesus is the only way to God. Modern culture and theologies…even some inthe Christian Church…see this as too narrow and restrictive, intolerant and unloving. But to say there aremany ways, makes no sense, and stands in the face of the sacrifice of true Grace.God would not have sent His only Son to die on a cross if He could have saved us by any other means. No Grace would mean no salvation. If there were a bunch of ways to get to heaven, then why did Christdie? When Jesus was praying in Luke 22:42https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+22%3A42&version=NIV"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."Basically asking…if there's any other way. God didn't say, “well, actually there are a thousand ways, butI'm going to make you go through this anyway”. Just No.Grace has a Face. The face of JesusGalatians 2:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+2%3A21&version=NIV21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died fornothing!”Back to Verse 1111 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all peopleWhat is salvation? While sometimes in the Bible, salvation is being saved from one's enemies, in the New Testament, itrefers more to end of time events…God's judgement. Salvation, in this sense, is being saved from God'sperfect judgement…through His perfect GRACE- Grace makes all people savable – every sin of every person has it's answer in Jesus.- “Every person who ends up in hell steps over a blood-stained cross with their name on it to getthere”Grace has a Face…the face of Jesus. The face of salvation.1. Grace TRAINS us. (verse 12)12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright andgodly lives in this present age,1. Grace doesn't flatter us…it teaches us…it trains us-It doesn't tell us all is well, but speaks bluntly, directly and lovingly-for our own good.Titus 2:12 puts an end, once and for all to any theology that separates salvation from the demands ofobedience to Jesus Christ.-Grace teaches us that our lifestyle is suicidal…not in a worldly way, but in an eternalway.-Grace teaches us what we need to do, and what not to do in order to change.-Grace educates us, trains us and to reform and transform. God expects us to go in anew direction when we experience His Grace…His Son…His salvation. If you have you accepted His Grace…His son, and have not been changed, maybe you didn't.-Grace trains us to live better lives according to God's standards and priorities and notour own.-Our works become the natural response to HIS works- Grace teaches us to live a certain kind of life, to live in a particular way, and defined byparticular character qualities.1. Develop self-control2. Live uprightly3. Live Godly lives…for NOW, not for some other place and time, but for here and now. What does that training look like?1. Sometimes it looks like Divine discipline – sometimes it's difficult circumstances.Hebrews 12:7-11 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+12%3A7-11&version=NIV7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplinedby their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are notlegitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers whodisciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father ofspirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for ourgood, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained byit.- If you feel that the circumstances of life are stretching you beyond what you think you canbear, or beyond what you want to bear, it may well be the Grace of God training you.Like a serious workout at the gym…it hurts, and isn't pleasant at the time. But if werecognize it as Grace and embrace it for what it is, then it will have that amazingstrengthening, fruit-producing effect.Embrace it…embrace the training of GraceHOW?1. Training requires some degree of cooperation or response on our part.Anyone who has been to the gym or worked with a trainer understands that you can't just showup for training and watch the trainer do all the work and somehow benefit from it. You have toactively engage and actively participate if you expect to be changed by it.2. We have to deny ourselvesThe first step is self-denial.You can't train for a marathon without first denying various habits and behaviors in your lifethat would get in the way of you preparing for the race….like diet and lots and lots of running.Training in grace is like training for a marathon- you have to say NO to several things as a firststep, in this case: 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passionsUnGodliness – Whatever actions or attitudes undermine God's centrality in your life (Ifit makes God marginal, it is ungodly)…like cheap American Christian Church Grace.Godliness is having a regard for God's glory and God's will in every aspect of our lives, doing everything out of reverence and love for Him.Worldly Passions – The result of a hungry soul that doesn't have God at the center.Anything that steals your focus away from God…like maybe politics?Saying NO is not a one-time thing. It's an ongoing part of training. We're called to take up our cross, the cross of self-denial every day.Count the cost of what training will require.Luke 14:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+14%3A28&version=NIV28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see ifyou have enough money to complete it? 29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it,everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'2. Grace is POWERFUL-Just as God redeemed Israel from Egyptian bondage, so too the Son of God redeems, withgreat power, a new covenant people from bondage to lawlessness and sin. Only the Grace of God,through the death of His Son can redeem from lawlessness, can liberate from sin and can set the captivesoul free. Nothing else will…nothing else can.Jesus described the reason for His coming in this way:Mark 10:45 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+10%3A45&version=NIV45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.”Paul described it this way…2 Corinthians 5:21 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2+Corinthians+5%3A21&version=NIV21 God made him who had no sin to be sin [a] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness ofGodGrace has the power to conform us into the righteousness of God2. Grace teaches us to WAIT for what we hope for…to wait expectantly for His coming13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, JesusChrist,-Waiting sometimes seems passive, like we are not doing anything, but Biblically speaking, waiting is notpassive…it's ACTIVE- Waiting in this sense draws us forward into action, rather than causing us to relax- Like a bridegroom waiting for his bride, there's nothing passive about waiting if the focus ofyour wait is your primary desire. It's important to realize that there is a profound difference between passive waiting and active waiting.Passive waiting can take the form of cynicism, complaining, or simply doing nothing.Active waiting, however, is a posture that seeks to cultivate habits that are focused on intentionalpreparation. It is a blessed hope because unlike every other hope we might have, it cannot be disappointed….Jesus iscoming back.We are waiting for “the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”.Are you waiting on the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior? If you are excitedly waitingfor Jesus to come, your waiting looks like preparation. Your preparation looks like fruit. If you're notprepared, and not bearing fruit, then what are you waiting for??(Grace is Powerful) (Grace teaches us to actively wait)2. Grace is PURIFYING14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that arehis very own, eager to do what is good.-It cleanses, washes and renews: The death of Christ cleanses us-It purifies our hearts by faith and our lives by the Holy Spirit.Proverbs 25:4 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+25%3A4&version=NIVRemove the dross from the silver, and a silversmith can produce a vessel; The Refiner's fire is purifying: When precious metals are refined the impurities (dross) must first beremoved. These pollutants are burned away as the metals are subjected to intense heat. As a result ofthe refining process the craftsman is given pure silver to work with as he crafts the metal into a beautifulmasterpiece. Without first removing the dross, the precious metal would be unworkable. Thesilversmith knows when the silver is pure because he can see his reflection in it.Have we allowed God to purify us through His grace? Can He see His reflection in our lives?3. Grace is POSSESIVEVerse 14 …to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.-Kind of paradoxical – even though grace is incredibly generous, it is also tremendouslypossessive…even jealous. He PURCHASED us. To PURIFY us to POSSESS us…literally for Himself.…a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.1 Peter 2:9-10 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Peter+2%3A9-10&version=NIV9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you maydeclare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were nota people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you havereceived mercy.-When Grace comes into your life, it takes over…it buys you and makes you its own. That's avery good thing…that's SALVATION.-When you encounter the Grace of God…the cross of Christ, you are no longer your own, but Hisown possession. Grace is possessive because it is costly. It cost God the life of His only Son.1 Corinthians 6:19-20https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+6%3A19-20&version=NIV19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you havereceived from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with yourbodies.Grace appeared at the climax of history through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, but Grace isalways there for us in the continual self-giving of the Son, like a steady, never-ending stream.-Have you embraced Grace, and all He provides and requires?-Am I now living a life defined by Grace? - You will know by the fruit.- God's Grace appears in verse 11, and God's glory appears in verse 13. The grace that has appearedspeaks of His first coming, and the Glory that will appear speaks of His second coming.4. God's Grace teaches us who is LordGod's Grace teaches us what we should learn15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not letanyone despise you.”1. Learn doctrine…these are the things you should teach – refers to the entire letter-a letter filled withsound teaching2. Learn duty…encourage with authority. Go alongside and challenge in the way we should all live as welook for “the blessed hope”.3. Learn discernment: if “encourage” speaks to us about the way we should go, “rebuke” admonishes usconcerning the way we should NOT go. When we confront or correct, we do so with all authority. Wedon't compromise…Grace cost too much to compromise.4. Learn dedication: Speaking the truth will not always be popular, but it will always be necessary. It willrequire courage, conviction, the confidence of Christ – and will always require love as it's foundation. This will enable you to humbly stand tall, refusing to be intimidated by Christ's opponents. In this, youwill not let anyone disregard or despise you.Don't worry about the nay-sayers. Be above reproach and love them. (Like Paul and Timothy)Recap1. Grace isn't cheap. Don't treat it cheaply and don't represent it as cheap. That's false teaching.Grace Christian Fellowship –the sign says: “Love God, Love People”. We love God, and we lovepeople because we so strongly desire to show people the true Grace of God through Jesus Christ. That tells peoplethe message is more important than the brand…that love is more important than a logo…that the objective is more important than opticsthat it's better to be a hospital for the lost, than a country club for the savedthat Grace itself is precious…that time here is short, but eternity isn't…that conviction is more important than comfortwe can't say “we're good”, when we know we're all badGrace is costly. Grace is Honest. And Grace is redemptivebut at the same time, any of this done without love is worthless2. Let Grace train you…like a marathon. Training can hurt, but understanding what you're training forputs everything in perspective.3. Put away anything in your life that doesn't bear fruit for God's kingdom, and keep Him as your mainfocus.4. Know His word and teach it with authority.5. Stand tall, confidently and passionately love God and love people. Our hearts should well up with praise in response to the Grace of God.Grace has a Face and He truly is amazing.

Bonus Episode 56   TITLE I Wasn't Invited...Why? This Sucks!...Now What?   GUEST Solo Episode   EPISODE OVERVIEW It genuinely stings when we learn we weren’t invited to something! This just happened to me, when I saw something posted on social media.  What can we do to heal the parts of us that get triggered and feel hurt when this happens? We get to love the part of us that feels hurt. We can unpack our bags and live in the hurt, or we use this as an opportunity to evaluate the relationship, the activity we missed, and what we want in our lives.  Are these our People? What are our values and how we show up in the world?     HIGHLIGHTS It’s going to sting when we find out we aren’t included—that’s a fact, and it’s very normal to feel hurt, angry, disappointed when we learn that we weren’t included As a Highly Sensitive Person, aka HSP, we tend to be kind, loving, thoughtful human beings We don’t know why we weren’t included It’s not really our business Are there things we’re doing to hang on to the hurt or try and find out more about why we weren’t included What are our values? Are these our people? Chances are, it will trigger past feelings of inadequacy and the tendency to make it about ourselves—this is usually an indication that the fit in the relationship is off When were are truly seen and heard, we have very little doubt about whether or not we fit. It just feels good and right How can we love the part of us that feels hurt Do we need to get extra support from a friend, therapist, mentor or coach if we’re feeling stuck? We can process and give energy to the woundedness We’re in it We’re defending We’re keeping the wound alive We can process and heal the woundness We evaluate the relationship We evaluate if we enjoy and benefit from the activity We evaluate our values and how we show up vs. how the other people show up Do you unfollow or unfriend the person (people) that are excluding you? What’s the kind thing to do in order to surround yourself with love and support How will it be if you continue to see things you’re not invited to on social media? People have a right to NOT include you People have a right to post on social media or talk about things you weren’t invited to How can we learn to heal our wounds and allow others to do what they do? When we look at our relationships, are they reciprocal? Do we give/do more than the other person consistently? Are we the one who is always reaching out and making plans? Do we enjoy the same activities? Do we have the same values? How do we feel after being with the person? We get to choose what we have in our lives We can learn to work through these hurts so they don’t over run the other things in our lives   PODCAST HOST Patricia Young hosts the podcast Unapologetically Sensitive, and works with Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) helping them to understand their HSP traits, and turning their perceived shortcomings into superpowers. Patricia is passionate about providing education to help HSPs and non-HSPs understand and truly appreciate the amazing gifts they have to offer. The morning after the second sun broke open, the campus of the the Last University is quiet. But this is not hard-won exhalation. It is a gasp for breath in the middle of a marathon run. Because before the members of the University’s ad hoc council can fully settle back into daily life, they are sprung back into action by an impulse as nervous as it is noble. There will be time to rest--and surely they need it. But in this moment, the world burns. And they refuse to let the fire simply light their faces from afar. This week on Spring in Hieron: A Handful of People What is the difference between an INSTINCT and an IMPULSE? Everything. The former guides you in thought, shaping your REFLECTION with biases hard earned. The latter triggers ACTION without consideration. Embrace your instinct, even--especially--when others tell you that it confounds their sense of possibility. You know better than them. But resist impulsiveness with all your being. However quick a dead mage was in their final moments, they are still a dead mage. -An excerpt from the Crystalized Lectures of the Wizard Fantasmo Hosted by Austin Walker (@austin_walker) Featuring Janine Hawkins (@bleatingheart) Andi Clare (@captaintrash), Ali Acampora (@ali_west), Art Martinez-Tebbel (@atebbel), Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal), Keith J Carberry (@keithjcarberry) and Andrew Lee Swan (@swandre3000) Produced by Ali Acampora (@ali_west) Cover Art by Craig Sheldon (@shoddyrobot) A transcription is available for this episode here.A full list of completed transcriptions is available here. Palm Sunday Speaker: Pastor Patrick Kelley Originally Recorded: Apr 14, 2019 Mark 11:1-10 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ” They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna! ” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Our expectations shape our experience. (With God and People) What you expect you’ll also train yourself to look for. If the devil can control your expectation he’ll control your experience Having the wrong expectations will rob your experience with God because you’ll miss the moment you’re in Continual disappoint leads to discouragement and depression Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. The correct expectation positions you to experience the abundant life of Jesus. How do you get the right expectation? You saturate yourself in His presence and His Word. Big Idea: The correct expectation will elevate your experience with Jesus.

A recording of a debate at the Battle of Ideas festival at the Barbican in London on 14 October 2018. Over the past year, debates about democracy and its woes have been ubiquitous. There are fears tech giants and algorithms are undermining elections. Liberal democratic values such as free speech and universalism are questioned, even by liberals. Populism is variously claimed to be a threat to democracy or its very embodiment. Some claim undereducated voters were conned into voting for Brexit or Donald Trump and argue citizens should have to earn the right to vote by passing a test. Elected governments in Poland and Hungary have been censured by the EU. But managerial style of rule suggests anti-democratic tendencies have been developing for decades, excluding and ultimately angering voters. Many government powers are now exercised by unelected experts and quangos. Is it time to give more power to The People? What is democracy and what threatens it today? Can liberalism renew itself sufficiently to save democracy? In episode 26, Rhod looks at the impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to have on philanthropy and civil society. Topics covered include:   -What are we talking about? We look at what AI actually means and why it has come to prominence in recent years, and consider 3 broad ways in which AI is going to affect civil society. -AI for Good: How is AI being put to use to deliver social and environmental benefits, and where could this go in the future? We touch on fascinating projects using machine learning for medical research and environmental protection, and explore the use of chatbots and voice-activated assistants. -The wider operating environment: AI seems set to disrupt the way that organisations, and even entire industries, operate. Civil society organisations could harness the benefits of automation, but will also need to address the wider challenges that it poses to the future of the workplace. Regulation could also be transformed, and CSOs will have to adapt. And the ways in which we are able to give in the future might look radically different. -Negative consequences of AI: We are now aware that AI poses risks as well as opportunities, and civil society seems certain to play a role in addressing many of these new challenges. We explore the dangers of algorithmic bias and the growing tide of fake news and targeted propaganda- including the emergence of “deepfakes”. We also look at the ways in which interaction with AI could affect human behaviour and the challenges this might pose.   Related Content -Machine-Made Goods: Philanthropy, civil society and artificial intelligence (forthcoming discussion paper, so watch out for it on our Future:Good pages)   -CAF Submission to House of Lords Select Committee on AI Call for Evidence    -"Where are Charities in the Great AI Debate", World Economic Forum blog   -Civil Society article on charities and AI ethics   -5 ways AI is already having an impact on charity   -Robotic Alms: Is AI the future of philanthropy advice?   -Future Imperfect: 10 new problems that technology will create and charities will have to deal with   -Automatic for the People: What might a philanthropy algorithm look like?

The ability to share it, and share it effectively makes or breaks good leadership. Make sure that it isn’t something solely relayed but UNDERSTOOD. Being a leader isn’t a self-imposed title. It’s given through pure action. How big of a role does trust play in effective communication? HUGE! But who deserves it?
