Can you believe we're not even a month into the NHL's work stoppage despite this past few weeks feeling like a decade or more? Even so, we got the boys back together for a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio to talk a little bit about the NHL, break down Anton Slepyshev's decision to stay in Russia, come up with a few hypothetical scenarios, and help us all kill an hour of our day. To kick off this week's podcast, we started in with a look the scary situation involving Edmonton Oilers forward, Colby Cave, having to be placed in a medically-induced coma to combat a brain bleed. At this point, the only update we've received is that he made it through surgery to remove a colloid cyst but remains in the coma to ease the pressure on his brain. From there, we moved onto Anton Slepyshev's decision to remain in Russia for the next couple of years rather than coming back to Edmonton for a second tour of duty. Is this a big loss for the Oilers? Should we care that he didn't want to come back? Next up, we broke down some of Connor McDavid's quotes from yesterday's conference call, including his statement that he wouldn't have gone into the Sportsnet studio for the draft lottery again if he had the chance to redo it. Getting into the weirder side, I hit the boys with a tough hypothetical scenario: If you had to hand the reigns back over to any of the last four Edmonton Oilers GMs (Tambellini, MacT, Chiarelli, Keith Gretzky), who would it be? Lastly, we wrapped up this week's podcast with the boys deciding where would be the best neutral site for NHL games, provided that the league was able to safely resume play. Hosted on Acast. Here’s what Peter, JJ, and Sara covered in this episode. The Draft: Moritz “lots of up” Seider was probably a reach... or not... or who cares? The Wings drafted him and now we all love him. He’s not the only kid we grabbed though. We’ll get draft reactions from the crew. The Yzermandate: Stevie fired a scout and hired his brother. Is this the new Keith Gretzky era? Is the Swedish Mafia slowly being replaced by the Yzermen? What’s the plan going forward? Free Agent Frenzy: Detroit had money to dip in the pool and spent a little bit on some stopgap pieces, which almost certainly belies the timeline. We’ll go over what the Wings did (and didn’t do) on July 1st and discuss what’s still to come. Around the League in RFAs: Plenty of money got spend, some of it was on Sebasian Aho. We finally got an offer sheet! Is that an under-utilized market inefficiency we’ve seen exploited or just a product of a situation unique to this year? Reader Questions: Make sure to ask anything your heart desires so we don’t miss answering your best questions. Despite everything, still my favorite part of every episode. Hello friends, we're back with another episode of Oilersnation Radio! It's our 35th episode, can you believe it? We were without both Baggedmilk AND Cooom this week so The Squire filled in and yelled at us for the sixty minutes. The GM Watch of 2019 is heating up so YOU KNOW we talked about that. McCrimmon is officially out of the running, so we've got a bunch of opinions on the other guys like Holland, Hunter, and Burke. Don't forget about Keith Gretzky though! He's still in the running and has a very good chance of being hired as GM in my opinion. We try to be as positive as possible this episode, even though sometimes it's REALLY hard to do with this team. Another hot topic in the Oilers world includes the comments Milan Lucic made about the potential of playing in Vancouver for the Canucks. If Lucic does eventually want to play for Van City, then is there a trade to be made with them? Maybe Eriksson? Maybe a cap dump trade? We discuss all the possibilities. This weeks intro/outro song is "Just So You Know" from Laur Elle. You can listen to the song HERE or visit her Instagram.

NHL on Rogers analyst Louie DeBrusk joins Bob from Winnipeg to discuss the Jets-Blues series. Plus Louie gives his thought's on the possibility of Keith Gretzky becoming the next general manager of the Oilers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Hockey Hall of Fame writer Jim Matheson defends his column in which he says the Edmonton Oilers should simply lift the ‘interim’ general manager tag from Keith Gretzky — brother of the Great One, Wayne, who is also an Oilers executive — arguing he knows the players in the organization better than anyone and has developed a solid reputation scouting and plucking talent from the amateur ranks. Matheson's stance swims against popular opinion, as evidenced by a recent Postmedia Oilers reader survey that found just 14% would hire Keith if they ran the NHL team. His take is also anything but hot with the hordes on social media. In this episode, Oil Spills host Craig Ellingson talks to Matheson about his thoughts on Keith Gretzky, on the state of Oilers management and executiveness in general, on the Oilers’ draft slot at eighth and about the start of the NHL playoffs.
Welcome, citizens, to the 116th episode of the Real Life Podcast, the show where the boys set up an itinerary and don't really get to any of it. This week, the guys tried to stay on topic as they analyzed the Bob Nicholson/Keith Gretzky press conference, Connor McDavid's leg injury from the weekend, the playoffs, and what to expect this offseason. To start off this week's podcast, the guys started with this morning's press conference where both Bob Nicholson and Keith Gretzky sat in front of the media to discuss the issues du jours and offer their best available explanations on what is to come. Of course, those explanations and ideas were about as vague as anything the Oilers have presented yet, which left many Oilers fans with a sour taste in their mouth. With the Oilers missing the playoffs for the 12th time in the last 13 years, it's hard to blame the fans for being cynical. Speaking of the playoffs, the guys debated on how much playoff hockey they'll be watching or if the Oilers missing out again makes it too painful. Next up, Baggedmilk walked the boys through the #NationRoadTrip to Calgary and what it was like to see Connor McDavid go down with what seemed like a broken leg at the time. Needless to say, the entire vibe changed when the captain went down. Sticking with Connor McDavid, the boys ended things off by taking a look at the captain's post-season press conference and how, for the first time, he dropped the mic like an absolute boss. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome, citizens, to yet a very special episode of the Real Life Podcast as Jay, The Squire, Downton went on trial to face charges of being a traitor after he was spotted at the Calgary Flames game last Wednesday in Las Vegas. Jay never expected that TV cameras would catch him celebrating a Flames goal and, as a result, he had some major explaining to do. After loyal Nation citizen, Fat Dad 69, spotted Jay on TV celebrating a Calgary Flames goal, the Internet erupted with rage over his treacherous ways. Has the Squire been a secret Flames fan this whole time? With the way the Nation was reacting to this shocking news, the Squire had some serious explaining to do and the first part of this podcast was dedicated to giving him that chance. Will the people buy his arguments? You'll have to decide for yourself. Back to the Oilers, the GM search is obviously a major topic of discussion around here but not everyone thinks the search will be as thorough as it probably should be. In fact, some folks believe that Keith Gretzky is already lined up for the job regardless of what happens with the search and the boys close out this week's episode with a look at what could be going on with this job hunt. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome, friendly Nation compadres, to a brand new episode of Oilersnation Radio. This week, we touch on the shenanigans surrounding Jesse Puljujarvi, the trades Talbot and Spooner trades, Sam Gagner scoring his first goal in his second tour of duty with the Oilers, and a whole lot more. To start off this week's episode, we jump right into the Jesse Puljujarvi controversy that erupted on Twitter this morning when news broke that he could potentially miss the remainder of the season due to surgery. Yes, that's right, I said surgery. Despite not knowing that he was injured in any way, Jesse Puljujarvi could require surgery that could keep him out for the remainder of the season. That is, of course, unless the second opinion Puljujarvi gets next week says otherwise. From there, we dove into the two trades that Keith Gretzky pulled off this past week and what they mean for the Oilers moving forward. Along those lines, we spent a few minutes pumping Sam Gagner's tires after he scored his first goal with the Oilers in his second tour of duty. Considering the praise Keith Gretzky got for these two moves, we discussed how the narrative has changed around the team from the media, bloggers, and fans alike. Lastly, we took a quick look at the trade deadline and offered some predictions on what we think the Oilers will accomplish at this year's seller's market. Hosted on Acast. Mark and Bob discuss Keith Gretzky's time as interim G.M. and how management could negotiate the salary cap issues. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Edmonton Oilers are indeed sellers for the 2019 NHL trade deadline coming up on Feb. 25. They dealt goalie Cam Talbot to the Philadelphia Flyers for Anthony Stolarz in order to clear salary cap room for defenceman Andrej Sekera, who returned to the Oilers lineup from injury. But can the Oilers under interim general manager Keith Gretzky reasonably do much else besides give players away for middling draft picks to try to clear salary off the books? Other questions: should Gretzky — brother of the Great One, Wayne — be seriously considered to become the permanent GM of the Oilers? And it’s unlikely Ken Hitchcock will be back next season as head coach — what sort of coach should the Oilers target this time around?
Mike reflects on how he transitioned from being primarily a baseball fan to a football fan over the course of his lifetime. Chris goes off on baseball's slowest traditions. Plus: Justin Verlander, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Keith Gretzky, Bo Levi Mitchell, Stu Laird, Randy Ambrosie, and are CFL athletes underpaid?

With Peter Chiarelli out and Keith Gretzky in, for the interim, as general manager, the Edmonton Oilers have an existential question to ask of themselves: Are they really all in on making the 2019 NHL playoffs — which would surely mean trading away future prospects in the form of young players or draft picks — or are they willing to ride through the storm, no matter the cost?
