improve it! Podcast – Professional Development Through Play, Improv & Experiential Learning

In today's snack-sized dose of Workday Playdate, Erin's flipping the mentorship script and serving up a strategy that'll make your mentor want to shout your name from the rooftops. Spoiler: It's not about being the smartest in the room. It's about showing up with intention. The Problem: We all say mentorship matters, but too often mentees treat it like a vending machine: insert question, get answer, disappear. That's not how real relationships (or career growth) happen. The truth? Mentees who bring energy, curiosity, and follow-through are the ones who win every time. The Improv Hack to Try: The Callback Technique Ready to become a mentee your mentor brags about? Start here: Call. Back. Something. The next time you meet, reference a tip or insight your mentor gave you and share what you did with it. Show you were listening and taking action. This tiny move builds massive trust and shows you're not just in it for advice, you're in it for growth. Why it works: Improv callbacks create connection and continuity, and the same is true in mentorship. When you “call back” something from a past interaction, you're not just remembering, you're reinforcing. This keeps mentors invested and mentees unforgettable. Wednesday Tease: Episode 300: “You Found a Mentor—Now Here's How to Keep the Relationship Thriving.” Your next step? Don't miss this milestone episode! Erin goes deep on how to nurture the mentorship beyond the first coffee, with more improv-inspired tips to keep the momentum going. Because mentorship is a relationship, not a transaction. Feeling stretched thin but still trying to “stay positive”? Grab our free Positivity Without Pretending Toolkit. It's a quick, honest reset for people leaders who want to show up without faking it. The Good News That Media Doesn't Tell You Before diving into the political chaos, we start with hope: 3D-printed lung tissue that could cure COPD and asthma, revolutionary IVF techniques saving babies from mitochondrial diseases, and breakthrough infant heart transplant procedures expanding donor pools by 20%. Sometimes the best news is the news that reminds us human ingenuity is solving problems we thought impossible. Congressional Chaos & Crypto Drama The Senate passes Trump's $9 billion spending cuts in a nail-biter 51-48 vote, targeting foreign aid and public broadcasting. But the real drama? House Republicans initially blocked crypto bills during "Crypto Week" until Trump personally called holdouts to the Oval Office. We break down the GENIUS Act for stablecoin regulation, Bitcoin hitting $123K, and why regulating an industry you're profiting from might be problematic. The Musk vs. Trump Epstein Files Showdown Elon Musk has gone full chaos mode against Trump over Jeffrey Epstein files, even announcing an "America Party" to prioritize their release. We explore how this billionaire Twitter beef is creating genuine fractures in the MAGA movement and potentially costing Republicans seats in 2026. Immigration Crackdown Reality Check ICE now has access to 79 million Medicaid enrollees' personal data for deportation efforts. We examine the surge in arrests (47% without criminal charges), violent California cannabis farm raids, and the controversial "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center that Democrats and Republicans describe completely differently. International Military Escalation Trump's "Operation Midnight Hammer" strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, his complete flip on Russia policy with 100% tariff threats, and renewed violence in Syria. Plus, the ongoing Gaza humanitarian crisis and why a 20-year-old American was allegedly killed by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. Research on a Dime: What Is Socialism Actually? We break down the most misunderstood political term in America. Spoiler alert: Those "socialist" Nordic countries? Not actually socialist. Denmark's PM had to literally tell Americans to stop calling them that. We explore real socialism's pros and cons, why Americans already live with tons of "socialist" policies, and what NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's democratic socialism experiment might mean for American politics. Domestic Policy Pandemonium Trump freezes $6 billion in education grants, threatens to strip citizenship from political opponents (spoiler: he legally can't), and escalates tariffs on 100+ countries while inflation ticks upward. We also cover the Texas flooding tragedy, church shooting in Kentucky, and why your medical debt might stay on your credit report after all. The Numbers That Matter Bitcoin: $123,165 all-time high ICE arrests: 930 daily (triple the original target) Immigration detention: 60,000 people (20,000 over Congressional funding) Texas flooding: 80+ dead, 41 still missing Gaza casualties: 57,000+ Palestinians killed since October 7, 2023 Purple Political Breakdown cuts through partisan noise to deliver nuanced analysis of the week's biggest political stories. It's been three years since Nancy and I had a chance to talk, and in that time, she's been BUSY.  So in addition to falling in love with her character, Tug, and wanting to give him his own story, she's written a small-town duet (and maybe we talked her into a third?) as well as a romcom duo!  Think we can talk her into a third of that series as well?  Because... SPOILER ALERT... we're getting a third Shell Collector Series book, too! EEEP! To Light the Way Forward by Nancy Naigle A novel of overcoming deep loss, taking risks, and learning that life—and love—often surprises you when you least expect it, from the USA Today bestselling author of The Shell Collector. “Bringing to life characters you can't help but fall in love with, Nancy Naigle goes straight to the heart with this story of tragedy turned to triumph. A poignant reminder to never give up hope.”—Sheila Roberts, author of The Best Life Book Club Feeling adrift after the loss of her husband, Rosemary sets out to visit an old friend on Whelk's Island, undeterred by the threat of a hurricane. Before the storm hits, she finds herself at Tug's Diner where she quickly connects with the owner, Tug. But the storm destroys the diner, compounding Tug's grief from losing his love the previous year. The longer Rosemary stays, the more she sees Tug's deep sadness and resolves to help him. Together with Tug and friends Amanda and Paul, they all pitch in to help the close-knit community recover and rebuild. As Amanda and Paul reconnect after losing touch during the storm, their plans to take things slow seem increasingly impractical. While Rosemary and Tug help the young couple navigate their relationship, they also find themselves building a friendship that begins to restore them both. But can that friendship convince them that love is possible for anyone who's willing to take a risk—even those who never hoped they'd find it again? We're both out of town but never far away from you at Breakfast All Day. This week, we begin with a review of Ari Aster's latest, "Eddington," which takes us back to the tumultuous summer of 2020 between the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests. Aster follows up 2023's "Beau Is Afraid" with another nightmarish exploration of our current times, placing Joaquin Phoenix at the center once again. This one was designed to be divisive. In theaters now. Then for something a little sweeter, it was Alonso's turn to pick a movie he loved from childhood for the latest round of our favorite game: Was It Great or Were You 8? This time, he chose the 1976 Disney live-action comedy "No Deposit, No Return," starring Don Knotts, David Niven and a pre-Real Housewives Kim Richards. Christy had never even heard of this movie. Have you seen it? Finally, we did a LIVE spoiler chat about "Superman," now that the movie has been out for a week. We had a great turnout, especially given that it's a summer Friday. Apologies in advance for the audio issues toward the end: We both froze and couldn't hear each other, so we wrapped up quickly. What happens when Christians fall in love with Israel - not just the idea, but the land, the people, and yes...the wine?  In this episode, Matt and Ron welcome Daniel and Alana Elliott, founders of Israeli Good Wine, to tell a story that starts in the rocky hills of Samaria and ends with something far deeper than just a good vintage. You'll hear how a trip to Israel led Daniel to rethink his theology, how a verse in Jeremiah led an Israeli couple to plant vineyards on ancient hills, and how wine became more than a drink - it became evidence that God is keeping His promises.  From encountering the land to challenging replacement theology, this episode uncorks spiritual insight, prophetic fulfillment, and plenty of wine wisdom (including whether putting ice in red wine is ever okay). If you've ever wondered what Psalm 23 has to do with a wine bottle, or what it looks like to “taste and see” that the Lord is good - this one's for you. Key Takeaways Prophecy in a Bottle: Planting vineyards in Samaria isn't random - it's a direct fulfillment of Jeremiah 31:5. From Replacement to Restoration: Daniel and Alana's journey shifted from theological neutrality to a love for Israel rooted in Scripture. Wine as Witness: Each bottle tells a story of God's faithfulness, the land, and the people He hasn't forgotten. Kosher ≠ Better: A crash course in kosher wine laws, biblical vineyard rules, and why shellfish doesn't belong in your Merlot. Virtual Wine Night Coming: Join the Jewish Road and Israeli Good Wine for a curated tasting that brings Israel to your table. Chapter Markers 00:00 – Meet Daniel & Alana: Texas hospitality meets Israeli vineyards 02:00 – Falling in love with Israel - the journey begins 05:30 – The prophecy of vineyards in Jeremiah 31 08:00 – Alana's transformation: From neutral to deeply rooted 11:30 – Confronting replacement theology 14:45 – Ezekiel, dry bones, and the return of the glory 16:00 – Birth of Israeli Good Wine 19:00 – Taste and see: the theology behind the table 23:00 – Wine in Jewish tradition: from Shabbat to circumcision 25:00 – Is Israeli wine actually good? (Spoiler: Yes) 27:00 – What makes wine kosher - and why it matters 31:00 – Red vs. white: a spirited debate 35:00 – Can you put ice in wine? The last son of Krypton has been heard on radio, and seen in animation, serials, films, and several TV series. While each is a product of its time, some are clearly hits while others are misses. At long last James Gunn, best known for Guardians of the Galaxy, has his turn at bat. And, in the view of critics, movie goers, and all three Regular Joes, he has hit it out of the ballpark. The Film both reclaims Superman‘s position as the cornerstone of the DC universe and heralds an exciting new era under Gunn's stewardship. Note: there will be SPOILERS. James Gunn's Superman is finally here—and the Pop Culture Pastor crew is all in. This week, Dave, Cody, and Justin dig deep into the film that reboots the most iconic superhero of all time with big ideas, even bigger emotions, and (surprisingly) one very good dog. We break down the performances (Nicholas Hoult's Lex is definitive), debate the new take on Kal-El's parents, and celebrate the bright, hopeful tone that makes this Superman feel like… well, Superman. David Corenswet's debut in the cape gives us everything we've been missing—sincerity, optimism, and a jawline sculpted by truth, justice, and the American way.We also give our winners and losers of the movie, recast one key role, and tackle the biggest online criticisms: is he too soft? Too political? Too “for kids”? We've got thoughts. And feelings. And fist pumps. So many fist pumps.

Together, Ken and Annette dig into why we're so quick to feel bad when we fall short, how our religious and cultural backgrounds shape our expectations of “perfection,” and whether shame actually helps us grow or just keeps us stuck. Is it possible to strive for better without beating ourselves up? What should true repentance and real change look like? And most importantly… does eating too many desserts really make you a “bad” person? (Spoiler: probably not—in fact, you might get an argument in favor of extra dessert here.)Filled with warmth, wisdom, banter, and plenty of cake talk, this episode invites you to rethink what it really means to change, forgive yourself, and give yourself a little grace along the way. Let's dive in!Please share this episode with someone who needs to hear it.
