We didn't manage to track down an Australian to complete the Rugby Series we did during the summer... but lucky for us Libby Birch, the Melbourne Aussie Rules star, stepped into to teach us about a different type of code! The women's AFL game is in a unique position on the verge of professionalism where players are contracted to play for 6 months of the year, then work full-time jobs for the other half of the year. Libby speaks to us about the challenges faced by players balancing footy with work and discusses the complexity of a sport heading towards professionalism from the decision makers on the board to the inequalities faced by the players. She reminds us that while we can be grateful for the privilege to play elite sport, it's imperative women's sport continues to fight for equality and not be grateful for improvements. It was an absolute pleasure having Libby on the pod! This episode is supported by Boob Armour.
