Neurodivergence: Having the big conversations and living your values with Dr Naomi FisherWelcome to the Business of Psychology podcast. Today we're joined by a guest I recommend often. When I'm talking to clients and other parents, I very frequently find myself recommending her books and accessible webinars on supporting children who are struggling through alternative education and reducing demand. And when I'm talking to other psychologists and therapists, I use her as an excellent example of somebody who's able to combine two specialisms and pull off a psychology based portfolio career beautifully. Dr Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist specialising in autism and trauma. She's an EMDR consultant and trainer, and a prolific author who's cultivated her expertise through research, public sector work, and in her independent practice. Today we're exploring how her experiences doing her PhD in autism and NHS practice has shaped the impactful work that she does today. And we're also going to dive into the politics of neurodiversity and why Naomi is concerned that current social pressures are making it really hard for clinicians to have those nuanced conversations about diagnosis and education, and why she's launched her new podcast, Let's Talk Neurosense alongside Dr Danielle Drinkwater.Full show notes and a transcript of this episode are available at The Business of PsychologyLinks for Naomi:Website: naomifisher.co.ukPodcast: Let's Talk Neurosense: The Psychology of NeurodiversitySunstack: Think Again: Making Childhood Fit For ChildrenLinks for Rosie:Substack: substack.com/@drrosieRosie on Instagram:@rosiegilderthorp@drrosiegilderthorpThe highlightsNaomi tells us about her unusual route into clinical psychology, doing her PhD first 01:57I ask Naomi about the central question of her PhD 06:38Naomi talks about what drew her into clinical work 08:45We discuss the breadth of experience our clinical training gave us 12:07Naomi describes what she typically does in her practice at the moment 15:54Naomi talks about her drive get good information out there and the backlash she's received 20:21I ask Naomi how she deals with being recognised 26:48Naomi tells us about her podcast, Let's Talk Neurosense 37:33Naomi tells us where we can find her 51:48Start Up Your Psychology PracticeAre you tired of just talking about starting your practice but never quite committing? Parenting right now just feels… different. We're doing it in the middle of smartphones, social media, and nonstop input. We're thinking about safety, screen time, mental health, cyberbullying… all of it, all at once aaand probably even before 9am. So this question keeps coming up: is it actually harder to raise kids now, or was it just a different kind of hard back then? Did previous generations have more freedom because they weren't monitoring devices or even getting pulled into doomscrolling themselves? Or were they carrying a weight we might underestimate? Less support, less language for mental health, less flexibility at work?

What if I told you that the key to feeling calm, clear, intuitive… and even magnetic was all in your HEART? In this episode of Big Conversations, I sit down with Dr. Deborah Rozman, behavioral psychologist, author, and CEO of HeartMath Institute, which is a pioneering research organization studying the connection between the heart, brain, and nervous system. We dive into the science behind heart coherence, which is a measurable state where your heart rhythms can shift from chaotic and jagged into smooth, flowing patterns. This directly impacts your emotional state, intuition, health, and even your ability to manifest. Guided by Dr. Rozman's wisdom and research, you'll learn how your emotions are literally creating physiological patterns in your body, why stress keeps you stuck in reactive cycles, and how you can shift your entire internal state in under a minute. We also talk about: What your heart rate variability (HRV) actually means (and why you shouldn't panic about the number, LOL mine is def on the lower end!!!) The real relationship between your heart, brain, and intuition Why your emotional state assists manifestation How your heart's electromagnetic field influences not only your body...but the people around you!! (THE REAL MEANING OF A VIBE!) A simple, science-backed technique to regulate your nervous system on the spot in sixty seconds This conversation is where spirituality meets physiology - where "vibes" become measurable, and where inner peace becomes a skill you can actually train. I've been applying the goodies from this episode since we recorded the conversation and it's AMAZING how much it helps! Let's help LOVE GO VIRAL :)  Get the Inner Balance Coherence Plus sensor so you can track and observe changes in your heart coherence in real time:  https://www.heartmath.com/hhs

Bríet Ísis Elfar is not just one of Iceland's biggest music stars. She's an artist who embodies fearlessness, authenticity, and constant reinvention. Her breakout English-language single In Too Deep in 2018 introduced her sultry, soulful voice to the world, but it was her 2020 album Kveðja, Bríet that catapulted her to national stardom. She won “Album of the Year” and cemented herself as one of the country's most influential female musicians. Bríet’s Artistic & Spiritual Upbringing Born in Reykjavík in 1999, Bríet grew up in a uniquely creative and spiritual household. Her father, Benedikt Elfar, taught her guitar and nurtured her love of jazz, while her mother, Ásrún Laila Awad, led sweat-lodge ceremonies infused with mantra chanting and deep emotional connection. Raised in this world of music, ritual, and radical openness, Bríet developed both resilience and a powerful sense of self. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFeYJr4JdIk From Jazz Bars to Center Stage From singing jazz in Reykjavík restaurants for a hamburger and 5,000 krónur, to debuting her original work on the stage of Sónar Reykjavík, Bríet's journey has been anything but ordinary. She's unapologetically experimental, whether making plastic “glass” dresses with her longtime fashion collaborator, diving into collaborative projects like 1000 orð with rapper Birnir, or writing songs that transform heartbreak into catharsis. Bríet’s Radical Honesty as a Creative Force Known for her raw honesty, she has openly shared struggles with belonging, heartbreak, and personal growth. Yet through it all, her guiding philosophy remains simple: don't take life too seriously, embrace failure, and always follow the intuition of the heart. At a Turning Point, Always Becoming Today, Bríet stands at a new turning point—after years of acclaim, collaborations with major Icelandic artists like Ásgeir Trausti and Friðrik Dór, and millions of streams worldwide, she continues to chase the unknown. Whether sitting next to global icons in Tokyo or returning to her roots in a sweat lodge in Iceland, Bríet carries a rare ability to turn both joy and pain into beauty. At Skip Paige's Little Bar in Palm Desert, narrative nonfiction writer and true crime sleuth Lou Schachter unpacks why crimes captivate us—and how travel fuels his reporting on Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans & Randy Florence. He traces a personal origin story to his grandfather's 1933 Los Angeles murder, a saga tangled with Bugsy Siegel and a corrupt DA, now chronicled at LustForPower.com. Lou also dives into two Coachella Valley capers: the 1995 “friends helping friends” pyramid parties that rattled the McCallum Theatre, and a 1986 freight-train crash near Palm Springs tied to bored Marines. Plus, he reveals how obsessive research helped surface stolen art—including a missing de Kooning and works taken twice from the Harwood Museum—and why he writes ten-minute stories at TrueCrimeRoadTrip.com. Expect sharp humor, local history, and a look at greed, obsession, and the very human motives behind notorious cases. This episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence spotlights a dynamic leader shaping the desert's classical scene. As artistic director for Palm Springs Friends of Philharmonic, our guest Lee Mills explains how a tiny team brings the world's great orchestras to the McCallum Theatre within a narrow January to April window—often booking seasons as far out as 2028. Expect a blockbuster lineup: Chicago Symphony; a Los Angeles Philharmonic visit during a milestone leadership transition; Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell; a top Mexico City orchestra with Carlos Miguel Prieto and Pacho Flores fresh off a 2023 Latin Grammy; plus San Diego and Dallas Symphonies. We trace Mills' path from Belgrade, Montana to podiums in Brazil, Seattle, and the Carolinas, and how an MBA sharpened his audience-first programming. He rejects old-school “dictator” conducting in favor of joyful collaboration—and shares a thrilling vision to fuse symphonic power with club production. “Having your heart right towards your child is probably the most important thing you can do... but how you communicate is right up there too.” In this episode of I’ll Do Better Tomorrow, we share two powerful parenting wins from our own family this week. From navigating bedtime battles with our youngest to having a meaningful (and sometimes hilarious) conversation about consent and relationships with our teens, this is real-life parenting in action. These are the conversations that create connection, foster trust, and build resilience — and we’re sharing exactly how we did it. KEY POINTS: A Bedtime Breakthrough: How revisiting the basics (routines, rituals, and conversations) transformed bedtime struggles with our youngest daughter. The Power of the 3 E’s: Explore, Explain, Empower — a simple yet profound communication framework that creates buy-in, not battles. Tricky Talks That Stick: Why our once-a-month ‘tough talks’ with our teens have become weekly — and how they’re building confidence and safety around topics like consent, relationships, pressure, and boundaries. Start Early, Talk Often: Even our 11-year-old stayed engaged in a complex conversation about consent, showing that these conversations are never too early (or too late). It’s Not About Perfection: Success comes from showing up, leaning in, and keeping the conversations going — not from getting it right every time. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “When kids understand the rationale, things go so much better.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Happy Families – Resources for a happier family. Consent.gov.au – Consent resources and the Consent Can’t Wait campaign. Parental Guidance TV Show – Channel 9 and 9Now. ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Use the 3 E’s: Next time you face a challenge, pause and ask yourself — have I explored their perspective, explained mine, and empowered them to help solve it? Rethink Bedtime: If routines are breaking down, revisit rituals that worked when they were younger — and involve your child in creating the new plan. Schedule Tricky Talks: Don’t wait for problems to arise. Make space for regular conversations about emotions, consent, relationships, and boundaries. Make It Fun (and Safe): Keep these talks light, warm, and open — banter, laughter, and snacks help! Remember the Timing: Big conversations are most effective when emotions are calm — not in the middle of conflict.
