367 Manifesting Humanity It can be easy to forget that we're human. When work is stressful and all consuming, when dealing with people stuck in the past and the past versions of you, it's easy to forget we are a person with needs to lead a fulfilling life. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Alison Miller discuss how the stories we carry with us alter the people we are, often making us revert to the person we used to be and not the person we are now or the person we want to be. Highlights How do you manifest your humanity? Practicing new ways of being in a community. Are you being there for yourself? It's okay to fall sometimes. Quotes “This is a human being living in our society, how do we decide that we make life work for people.” “We're observing it, we're not judging it.” “We always have choices but rarely are they apparent to us.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I would love to hear from you, what part of this conversation resonated with you? To be in community, to grow, to learn, to connect in an authentic way with people who have diverse backgrounds and have led different lives than you. And When are you going to decide who you're going to bring to that next conversation to someone you want to have a relationship with. And, as always, thank you for listening. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

In this episode, I distill four themes gleaned from interviewing my first 100 guests.#1: Self-care is non-negotiable & yes you do have time. #2: There is joy to be found in exploring new & different ways of thinking.#3: Productivity is a choice. Where you are going to be productive & how productive you are going to be is in your hands.#4: Curiosity makes life way more interesting.Practical tips:1. Start your day with a morning routine - even 10 minutes will have an impact (see episode #3).2. Delete all Social Media apps from your phone.3. Articulate a philosophy around technology by asking how it aligns with your values & then make changes - like #4 & #5.4. Delete social media accounts that aren't serving you.5. Claim an honest day of rest (Daniel's book: https://amzn.to/3iEzHkT) 6. Learn to say NO (episode #71).7. Remember that productivity is a choice.8. When memories take precedence over school/work goals enjoy those times - don't beat yourself up for not meeting goals that can wait.9. Set a schedule that capitalizes on your personally productive hours10. Get curious when you are triggered and ask “Isn't this interesting?” Or, “I wonder what I might be learning here?” My Mantras:1. In the end it will be OK. If it's not OK, it's not the end. 2. Energy goes where attention flows. 3. In this episode, I chat with Dr. Alison Miller about the importance of boundaries, productivity, and working in a way that really works for you. Alison received her PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois Chicago. She is an entrepreneur who has built three successful businesses, including the Dissertation Coach in 2000. The Dissertation Coach has helped thousands of graduate students finish their doctoral dissertations and master's theses. The Academic Writers' Space (TAWS) is an online community designed for academics to get real work done. Highlights and Tips1. You have only so many resources; get clear on what is essential and what is “extra.” 2. When presented with opportunities, evaluate them in terms of your long-term goals - get clear on what you want out of your doctoral program – know your priorities.3. Having clear boundaries is an act of reverence; honor yourself: “Thank you….AND here is what I am committed to and one of the commitments I've made to myself is that I'm not taking on any new projects.”4. When you try to do everything, you end up doing nothing really well. 5. We often don't say “no” due to discomfort and/or the fear of missing out (FOMO) Saying no is a short-term discomfort compared to the long-term discomfort of overwhelm Don't let FOMO rule you!6. Not having clear boundaries prevents you from being present with your graduate work – work that demands unified attention. Your dissertation/thesis must be at the center. 7. You can't manage time, but you can be a better manager of your commitments by setting clear boundaries (listen to this podcast for more helpful tips: 8. Recovery and rejuvenation are essential during a doctoral program. 9. Having boundaries within a work session gives you unified attention: Pick one small assignment – surrender to one task (stay in ONE lane) Before you start working – take a deep breath and ask: What am I working on? What am I not working on? Then ask: Who is here? And: Is this compatible with my work? Listen to your body for guidance (FEEL IT), consider your options, and proceed accordingly.10. The doctoral process is a transformative process – use it to expand and grow into a heart-centered person.
