In the Men's gymnastics team final that took place in the Bercy arena last night in Paris. The Japanese team took the title after the Chinese men threw away a three mark lead heading into the final rotation. America came out on top in the battle for bronze and Stephen Nedoroscik mirrored the performance of Sasha Artemev at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to secure team USA's first Olympic team medal in sixteen years. The GB team finished in fourth, repeating their results from Rio and Tokyo and were able to hold off the strong Ukrainian team. I'm joined in this episode by Hamish Carter a former GB athlete and current Team Scotland gymnast. And this is our story.
On the opening night of Glasgow 2014, Kimberley Renicks won Team Scotland's first gold medal of the championships, followed around 63 minutes later by her older sister Louise, also winning gold. They were catapulted into the spotlight and nicknamed The Golden Sisters from that point on. In the latest episode, Eilidh and Susan hear from both sisters about their preparations leading into the games, what it's like to watch your sister become Commonwealth Champion and the chaos which followed. Kimberley and Louise also talk candidly about their upbringing, family support and their relationship as sisters, team mates and eventually as athlete and coach. As always, enjoy! The Commonwealth Games are "dying out a little bit unfortunately"- the view of proud Scottish world champion Beth Potter - who competed in Glasgow in 2014 in athletics and won Team Scotland's first medal in the triathlon in the sunshine in Sutton Park in Birmingham in 2022. But since that superb summer in England's second city, the storm clouds have surrounded the Commonwealth Games Federation, when the state of Victoria and Australia pulled out of hosting in 2026. Now 10 years on from their own glorious Games in Glasgow, Commonwealth Games Scotland has stepped up and said if the CGF can't find another host by it's own deadline of May this year (2024), it's come up with a new concept for the Commonwealth Games, which could also secure it's long term future. Scotland is on standby and this is the story so far. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With this new episode we kick off a brand new series called 'My 40k job' where we will be interviewing people who managed to turn their love for the hobby into a profession. The series will see our guests talking about how they came up with the ideas for their businesses, what are the typical challenges of such endeavors, how their pricing/quotations work, how they structure their offering and even how they do marketing. We kick off the series with the one and only Innes Wilson of Statcheck and Team Scotland fame. Innes has been offering coaching services since January 2023 as a full-time job and we found it appropriate to let him kickstart what will hopefully turn into an entire series of episodes. Make sure you leave a comment with names of people you would like us to interview next and we will do our best to make that happen! Music: Bensound
We're making a good habit lately of speaking with former guests. We do so again in this episode as we welcome back Karen Nicol, she's been a busy lass since we last caught up. Last time we spoke to Kaz she'd just completed her first Backyard Ultra, she's done 3 more since and they've all been part of a learning experience that's went much deeper than just running. We hear all about Karen's race experiences which have seen her not only contribute to Team Scotland's ‘yards' but have raised the bar in terms of her own personal achievements. With outings at the Cow Shed Backyard Ultra, the Highlander Backyard Ultra and most recently a notable Rasselbock Backyard Ultra under her belt Karen reflects on her own evolution as a runner. But there's something more going on too, a change in mindset that perhaps is the secret to her success. Karen has switched up both her training and overall approach as she reveals a drastic volume cut in her weekly mileage, the introduction of simulation weekends and time set aside to invest in her mind and body. It's quite the story and Karen tells us it all in her (newfound) calm, collective and measured way. There's a few constants remain though; her support team and Muller Rice consumption need no evolution whatsoever. Enjoy listening to Karen, she makes it sound easy peasy, it's far from it but you'll learn a thing or two from her to consider trying yourself. Now where's those links for the Backyard Ultra sign ups? Rasselbock Running Races sound da bomb, find more out HERE
The whole crew is here and they're joined by special guest and Team Scotland member Brian Seipp! Brian and Innes have returned from making top cut at the Manchester GT, Anthony returns victorious from All Is Dust, Nathan comes back from having a successful Adepticon Teams event, and Jeremy is just recovering from running All Is Dust.

Well hello Season 5!! Joining John & Steven for our season opener we welcome Karen Nicol aka Ultra Kazy. Karen has been in our sights for some time and we were super chuffed when she agreed to a chat on the pod. John and Steven spend their routine 10 mins chatting on the weeks happenings before being joined by Karen for an insight into her remarkable running story. Now a seasoned ultra runner with a glittering list of race finishes Karen admits running hasn't always been her thing. Her background was in dance before finding a love of running. But running itself is just half the story, she's found friendship and support in abundance and it soon becomes clear just how much that means. Karen plays a key role in Pyllon Ultra, she's the one who schemes with Paul Giblin on how many miles you'll have to run for your Pyllon Exposure hour miles. Another 6 miler? No! But we get a brill insight into Pyllon Ultra including news of their up and coming Pyllon XP5 weekender. Karen recently competed for Team Scotland in the Backyard Ultra in Castle Ward, Northern Ireland. We delve right into that experience including how many fizzy pigs and muller rices she managed to get through! Karen has fought adversity through her running journey, battling back from career threatening injury to get right back to being a superb endurance athlete. She also pays back the running community in abundance, none more so than her role of guide runner for young Felicity, an inspiring story awaits on that one. We had so such a good time talking to Karen, we are sure you will love her infectious spirit just as much as we did. Check out her instagram for a glimpse at her awe inspiring running locations and some amazing days outs in the hills with her pals here @UltraKazy Enjoy this one, it's a cracker. And remember, running isn't just about running......it's about much much more than that.

Professional long distance triathlete Ruth Astle and Olympian Beth Potter join us in conversation this week. The pair got to know each other during lockdown. Both of them train in Leeds, alongside the Brownlee brothers. It's a brilliant conversation between two athletes who have had very different experiences to get where they are today. But more than athletes, it's a chat with two fantastic female role models about the ups and downs of life and why making a massive change can be emotionally horrible, but it can make you grow and flourish. You'll hear 06:16 Ruth and Beth talk about now they met for the first time and how Ruth helped Beth with the riding and Beth helped Ruth with her running. 10:05 Talking about joining the Leeds Triathlon Centre. Beth says "I think I cried nearly every single day of my first year here. I found it really hard. There were so many unknowns. I'm not afraid of taking risks but there were so many unknowns. I did question myself a lot of the time and it's always hard coming into a training environment when you are on the newbie." 13:45 Beth Potter explains how finally being on British Triathlon's World Class funding programme will help her. 'I never felt like I was good enough, so it makes me feel like I belong and I can tap into other areas I haven't been able to tap into before.' 16:15 Ruth and Beth explain how their lives have changed since January 2016. Beth was working full time as a teacher in London thinking of the Rio Olympic trials, Ruth was working full time for Lloyds Bank and starting to get into training. 19:15 We head to the topic of food... Ruth and Beth both like spending time in the kitchen. Why Beth has more will power and what's on the post-race menu and Friday post-swim trips to Greggs. 24:15 Beth and Ruth talk about what it's like training with each other. 'We will always get each other out of the door. If we need to be chatty we can. I think seeing that grit and determination of just plugging away has been really good.' 29:15 The frustrations of swimming - they have both experienced it and Ruth thinks that time in the water is making a difference for her. 31:30 Beth talks about being selected for Team Scotland her third Commonwealth Games. This time she will only be doing triathlon at the Games in Birmingham. The pair also discuss the all important battle braids. 39:35 Ruth talks about why she is so excited about the Ironman World Championships heading to St George for the first time. 'It will be interesting to see if people will target both or one over the other'. 41:45 We talk about DNFs, getting back on it after a bad race and the idea of a perfect race. "I don't think there is such thing as a perfect race which is why you always have to have contingency plans" says Beth. "I do wish I could enjoy the good ones a bit more, but I try to dwell not too much on the good or bad." 47:35 Beth explains why she has her eyes on a standalone marathon but why she would continue to use cross training for it, rather than purely do run training. Spread the word of The Back Bar, and the easiest way is to like, share, retweet, rate, review etc even do it all twice if you want! :) Park yersel up, get a couple of drinks to hand and just sit back and enjoy this one, it's well worth the listen, even in our humble opinions. Our mum's think so too though so there is that....We're joined by former Team GB basketball Olympian and all round good guy, Kieron Achara! We're glad this one was on zoom so we didn't have the problem of feeling like midgets in the presence of the former Team GB, Team Scotland and Dusquane (pronounced Doo-Kane) University hoops star! We really only scratched the surface of Kieron's story, his near accidental stumbling into basketball, what took him to American and around Europe making his basketball career. Some great stories as we hear of nights out with some of the NBAs greatest, how in Euro basketball circles paying of salaries was deemed an optional luxury and his unfortunate first hand experience of gun violence in America. We brought it in the Heroes & Zeros this week and a tight choices in both, is it possible there was someone worse than Jacob Rees-Mogg in the zeros? Listen and find out!

Jenny Davis, Strive Change – The Sharkpreneur podcast with Kevin Harrington and Seth Greene Episode 433 Jenny Davis Jenny’s personal improvement journey started when she was six after being enrolled into a judo class so she could learn to defend herself. She went on to become a black belt fighting for Scotland and GB all over the world. A few years later she swapped her baggy judo suit for lycra, a carbon fibre bike, and high speeds on the velodromes all over the world. Career highlights include winning silver at Delhi Commonwealth Games, narrowly missing out for Team GB selection for London 2012 Olympics and racing for Team Scotland in front of a home crowd at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. During London 2012 trials Jenny was asked to present how she improved her performance to her department manager and leaders at Standard Life Plc. Having shared the principles of improvement Jenny was asked to help lead and deliver continuous improvement in the business. There a new career was born! After many business improvement and problem solving projects, teams, training programs, and lessons learned across multiple industries, Jenny now works with business leaders and entrepreneurs to move away from firefighting and stress to calm and control and onward to World Class Customer Service and the growth and profits that come with that. Listen to this illuminating Sharkpreneur episode with Jenny Davis about helping entrepreneurs and business leaders guide their teams through crisis and change. Here are some of the beneficial topics covered on this week’s show: How people need to be flexible with their business models during COVID-19. Why it’s vital to take a strategic pause to learn from the past to better the future. How you need to fix the root cause of your problem, so it never returns. Why you need to make sure the all the details of your business run smoothly. Rumours of our demise are much exaggerated! After a weeks holiday from podding Matt and Kev are back with tales from the Celtic Cup Pool Stages brilliantly organised by James of Team Ireland and Fras of Team Scotland. Kev makes minor changes to his BH list bringing in some centaurs for giggles and extra punch whilst Matt tries to reinvent The Empire with a wall of flaggies and inquisitors, no BSB and Dis 8 on the General. Predictable results ensue but amusing tales abound, so join your favourite (or at least top 5) podders as they do battle with their Celtic Brethren. Also an Argentine.
Kev and Matt are joined by the other members of the mighty, mighty Team Scotland , Paul and Callum, to tell tall tales of our last round of the Social Distancing UB Tournament. Will your hosts be the sad recipients of the wooden spoon? Can Kev keep the mino pain-train going? Can Matt, Paul and Callum keep up with the trail blazing Beast Herds? Find out in Episode 16. In other news we discuss new lists post SD, Matt repeatedly mispronounces 'Porthos' as 'Pathos' - an unforgivable error that will cause his old English Language teacher to hunt him down like the worthless cur he is - and Callum bemoans the repointed UD helped by a 'couple' of ales.
With more spice than an burrito rammed with jalapenos Team Scotland go Mano a Mano vs the might of Moctezuma's Revenge from the sprawling metropolis of Mexico City. Can Matt regain some momentum after the brick wall that was round 4? Can Kev keep the mino bus on the road for one more lap of the track? There's only one way to find out... buckle up and open your ear holes... we're heading South of the Border! Arriba!!!! In other news Kev paints some bases and moans about them even though they look amazing and Matt picks a list guaranteed to win no games at all in the Celtic Cup, then hides behind a weak and feeble excuse.
Matt and Kev are now well and truly locked into the Social Distancing UB Tournament and there's no way to get off this roller coaster - it only ends one way and that's with VICTORY OR DEATH! In Round 3 Team Scotland pulls the mighty USA based team Little Giants - Matt panics and deploys terribly whilst Kev misplays a hill with hilarious consequences - but will it end their chances of glory? Or can they pull it back for the Bravehearts? Only one way to find out; jump onboard, buckle up and scream if you wanna go faster. It's going to be a bumpy ride...

We return just in time to get excited about Euros! Alice joins us to discuss the lead up to the event and check in on how we've been feeling about Netrunner since we last recorded. Our enthusiasm is predominantly down to how alluring this year's Team Scotland t-shirt is (designed by our very own Iain). These are likely to be hotly coveted items but we don't want them torn from our torsos, so instead we're running a competition. The design features every legal ICE Breaker in the game with varying degrees of abstraction. Throughout the weekend we'll have sheets of paper featuring the design and space for you to guess which card each image represents. It will cost a pound to enter and the winner will receive a play mat featuring the design. Proceeds will go to Scottish Wildlife Trust for protecting the real life Darwins around our shores. Also discussed on the episode - trout, pirates, raising of eyebrows. This week Colin is really excited to announce a pretty special, and timely, guest to the Mountain Bikes Apart Podcast: none other than Kerry MacPhee, one of Scotland’s excellent Commonwealth Games mountain biking team. Kerry started out as a triathlete, racing a fair bit in that discipline in past years. She added mountain biking to her tri training, though, and soon discovered she had a real knack for it. That, along with the fact that Mountain bike is, of course, far more exciting than skinny wheels and plodding along on foot, led her to mountain bike racing, and now to the commonwealth games. In the interview Kerry talks about what it’s like to be part of her national team at such a big event, along with what training and prep she’s gone through to get there. It was great to get an insight into what it’s like to be an athlete at that level – something Colins thinks we’ve all dreamed about at some point! As always, before we start, your feedback means tonnes to Colin, so please do get in touch via the following methods: Email – just use the contact form here Comments – pop a comment in at the bottom of this page Voicemail – use the ‘Leave a voicemail’ button on the right iTunes reviews – drop one in via the iTunes Link Mountain Biking Race Tips Later in the Interview Kerry and Colin discuss mountain bike racing in general, and her tips on getting into racing in the first place. Her advice is really encouraging so if you’re dawdling about entering your first race, have a listen and get motivated. There are even a few training tips sprinkled in there to help you out. They also discussed the Scottish Cross Country series a few times – that’s a great set of races to get started in as they offer a big range of levels, from total beginners and up. Mountain Bike Coaching On the subject of training, Kerry and Colin discussed the fact that it’s often a great idea to get a bit of coaching every now and again throughout your biking life, as you hit skill plateaus. They mentioned Chris Ball and his company, Dirtschool, who are pretty well known as a great option for that in Scotland, having coached many a young DH racer in their time. They’ve even got Ruaridh Cunningham and Rab Wardell on their team, previous downhill and a cross country champions respectively. Where to Watch Kerry at the Commonwealth Games Colin is pretty excited to watch the Commonwealth Games mountain biking now, as you might be able to tell! You can see it too on Tuesday the 29th July. Kerry is racing in the women’s race at 11.31 alongside Lee Craigie and Jessica Robert for team Scotland. Then the men race at 14.00, and the Team Scotland guys to look out for are Grant Ferguson, Kenta Gallagher and Gareth Montgomerie. If you want to show Kerry your support then give her a cheer on Twitter at@KerryMacPhee. The race is going on at Cathkin Braes, so if you want to follow in their footsteps, post commonwealth games, then you can find the trails here: Cathkin Braes.
