Jared Milrad sits down with Muslim-German writer and journalist, Hilal Sezgin, to discuss her feature film, THE ALL IS ONE, winner of our 2023 A Show For Social Change Film Festival's Social Impact Award. THE ALL IS ONE is a narrative feature film that encompasses the question of why humans still consume meat. The film follows the aftermath of an incident at the home of Slaughterhouse owner, Werner Haas, in which a ton of slaughter waste is dumped on his front lawn in the middle of the night. Fuming mad, he files charges against unknown persons and foolishly sets something in motion that can't be stopped. THE ALL IS ONE comes after the fifty-year anniversary of the German Animal Welfare Act of 1972, which states that vertebrates may only be killed for “justifiable reasons,” thus sparking debate about what, if anything, justifies animal slaughter. Hilal Sezgin is one of very few Muslim authors reporting for national German newspapers. Her pieces focus primarily on feminism, Islam, Islamophobia, animal ethics, and human rights. She is especially known for her advocacy for same-sex civil partnerships in Germany, the right for Muslim women to wear headscarves at work and in public, and animal rights. Sezgin opens up to Jared Milrad about how both her Islamic upbringing and secular studies influenced her animal and human rights advocacy, the undeniable link between factory farming and climate change, and creating discourse about the general mistreatment of animals. James Corbett, Tom Batterbury and Phil Thomson, the founders of crime prevention and detection software Auror, have been named winners of the EY Entrepreneur of The Year award for 2022. The trio were chosen from a field of five category winners and will represent New Zealand at the World Entrepreneur of the Year awards in June next year against winners from more than fifty other countries. Vaughan Fergusson, head judge for the category, said Auror has the potential to be a massive Kiwi global success story. “Entrants are typically strong across two to three aspects of the judging criteria, but Auror's entry was strong across them all, and that's what made them stand out,” Fergusson said. “What impressed us was the work they are doing to make the world a better place, and because the tool has been in use across multiple countries for a number of years, they had some really amazing stats to demonstrate the impact they're making. “By changing the way we prevent crime, they are making people feel safer in the workplace and community, and that's a really good thing. What's exciting is that as Auror further establishes itself in bigger markets like the US.” Auror's software helps retailers around the world reduce losses, and police prevent crime. More than 80 per cent of retailers in New Zealand use the platform and Auror saves NZ Police 200,000 hours a year in investigations. The Auror founders, who had won the Tech and Emerging Industries category, beat Lumin's Max Ferguson (Young category), Dawn Aerospace's Stefan Powell (Product), Brooke Roberts, Leighton Roberts and Sonya Williams of Sharesies (Services) and Stuart Wilson of Modica (Master). Other awards on the night included the Social Impact Award which went to Jennifer Del Bel from soy candle company Downlights New Zealand, and Carrfields Limited, which took home the Family Business Award for Excellence award.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This month, our guest is Stuart Macpherson, Post-doctoral researcher in experimental opto-electronics in the Stranks Lab at the Department of Physics. Stuart's research focuses on understanding the physics of solar photovoltaics based on perovskite compound, one of the fastest advancing solar technologies of today. Stuart is also the founder of Sustain/Ed, a non-profit organisation that aims to provide sustainability resources to young students. One of their activities is the energy mapping challenge, aimed at primary school students(9-11 year olds). Through hands-on measurements and data logging, students increase their awareness about climate change and learn how to critically approach scientific problems and apply the knowledge gained to solve real world problems. The project has already been piloted at 6 schools across the country, and is now scaling up further. Another activity that he has launched with Sustain/Ed is the Sustain/Ed learning module, an educational package which augments the KS2 curriculum in the UK by offering activities which reinforce awareness of sustainability and climate action while maintaining core learning outcomes. For his projects with Sustain/Ed, in 2021 Stuart was recognised with the Vice Chancellor's Social Impact Award. But how did his journey in sustainability start? And how does it relate to the technologies he has been developing? We will ask him this and more in our interview. Stay with us… Please help us get better by taking our https://forms.gle/GKiDPV2pmLjpmKHy9 (quick survey)! Your feedback will help us understand how we can improve in the future. Victor Gabriel and Duran Jones and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new Sundance film Hallelujah, poverty and justice, drama, death and belonging, resilience, oppression and innocence lost, Cornel West, James Baldwin and why storytelling and human experience are intimately connected.Victors Directors Statement: "A theme that is ever present in my life is the question “How do I overcome my suffering? Is it even possible?” More specifically in this story it is the idea of grieving the people I have lost, the loved ones we have all lost. A sub theme is the idea of belonging and finding home. Where is home? As someone who has been abandoned, displaced, neglected and had to move around and live with different people, home is nebulous at best. But what I realize for me is that though I may never “belong”, I am deeply loved by many people. And being loved is more important to me than belonging.”Synopsis:Chetty and Paper are two brothers who refuse to grow up. But due to unforeseen circumstances, they are now in charge of their nephew HALLELUJAH,a strange book quoting black boy and their quiet niece Lila. Sitting in the backyard, supposedly watching their niece and nephew, the two brothers become so distracted they don't notice when Hallelujah attempts suicide. What follows is a funny moving story about family, the people we have left behind, and the people who are still with us.About Victor and Duran:Growing up in poverty, Victor Gabriel realized that water in cornflakes doesn't taste as bad as you think it would. He wandered without a home before eventually ending up in Compton, CA. Now as a black male writer/director and recent MFA graduate of AFI Conservatory, he has turned to filmmaking as way for him to wrestle with his own suffering as well as the suffering of others. He holds an MA in Clinical Psychology and has been working as a Marriage and Family Therapist with survivors of trauma in Compton/Watts/South Central for the past several years. His short film BLACK BOYS CAN'T CRY, won the Social Impact Award at the Hollyshorts Film Festival and is currently being shown in others. His favorite movie is Richard Donner's Superman. He likes Red Vines and thinks Twizzlers are trash. BIG FACTS.Duran Jones is a 2007 graduate of Hampton University, with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. He is an accomplished independent rapper and songwriter with a keen sense of storytelling. In 2017, he completed his first short film titled BLKMGC, an urban musical based on the shooting death of Tamir Rice at the hands of police. Duran is also known for his 2011 tribute to Trayvon Martin and his subsequent interview on CNN.Now a Producing Fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory, his goal is to tell stories for people of color that are truthful and impact the global community. While studying at AFI he graduated from the 2020 PGA Power of Diversity workshop, where his pilot “Daywalker” received interest from Mary Parent, Gary Lucchesi and Prentice Penny.Image Copyright and Credit: BLK Magic Content and Victor GabrielF2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. Baratunde Thurston is a writer, activist, comedian, podcaster, and media personality who holds space for difficult and complex conversations with his unique blend of humor, wisdom, and compassion. He is an Emmy-nominated host who has worked for The Onion, produced for The Daily Show, advised the Obama White House, and wrote the New York Times bestseller, How To Be Black. He is the executive producer and host of the How To Citizen Podcast, which Apple named one of its favorite podcasts of 2020 and for which Baratunde received the Social Impact Award at the 2021 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. In 2019, he also delivered what MSNBC's Brian Williams called “one of the greatest TED talks of all time,” titled, ‘How to Deconstruct Racism, One Headline at a Time'. Baratunde has an incredible ability to integrate and synthesize themes of race, culture, politics, and technology to explain where our nation is and where we can take it. In today's episode, we dive into his backstory, including his upbringing in the ‘Chocolate City' of Washington DC and how he learned to wield words across media in service of liberty and justice, plus so much more! What stands out about this interview is Baratunde's constant commitment to evolution and how he has made process not just a part of his life or an occasional focus, but a lifestyle. Baratunde believes that it's about the journey, not the destination; it's about the process, not the outcome. #Dyslexia #Dr. Marianne Cintron #Step By Step Dyslexia Solutions https://www.stepbystepdyslexiasolutions.com/I use music with my Orton Gillingham Reading program and it so effective. Music, specifically string instruments (but wind instruments also) resonate with the vibrations in the body and with the water content in our brains and body. But here is an article that talks about so much more. In the research article by Adam Croom, Music, Neuroscience, and the Psychology of Well-Being, he stated “It has been well argued by scholars that the biologically adaptive function of expectation is to prepare the organism for 'appropriate action and perception,' with regard to future objects and events (Huron, 2006, p. 3), which is an undeniably crucial capacity for successful survival and reproduction.” The speech-to-text associations in a structured language, that begin in pre-school with rhyming simply demonstrate the connection between sounds and written words. Explicit reading instruction that gives a student the ability to carefully decode words can be difficult for dyslexics, but with accompanying music they have a cognitive and attention advantage that can accelerate their success. At Step by Step Dyslexia Solutions, my research-based reading program produces solid results in reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary development. In some cases, students have made 1-3-year gains with structured literacy programs combined with music in as little as 6 weeks. In this podcast, I read excerpts of an article written by Jim Mitchell. It can be found at sbs.com.ua/guide/article/2018/08/14/healing-power-harp“One of the most fascinating forms of music therapy comes in the heavenly sound and vibrations of one of the world's oldest instruments, the harp. Live harp therapy has found success in treating an exhaustive array of maladies from chronic pain, to multiple sclerosis, respiratory disease, AIDS, cerebral palsy, cancer, nausea, lymphedema, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, dementia, autism, behavioral and learning disorders in children, and even over-stimulation in children by digital devices.”If you need help or have questions, let's chat at meetmarianne.comDr. Marianne Cintron is a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Administration, speaker, and author. (if you put your hand under your chin and say the sound for the letter “v”, you will feel a small vibration. If you put your hand under your chin and say the sound for “f”, you will not. Your lips are placed in the same position, but the “v” is categorized as “voiced' and the “f” is “unvoiced.” Our English language is full of these and if you email me I'll share more sounds with you. We may even have a training to teach you these if there appears to be a great interest. Mary Reed shares her story of having dyslexia and not learning to read until 5th grade. What does it mean to be a citizen of this world, of our community, and of our future? What does “citizen” mean, anyway? And what is the role of schools in growing citizens—or what should it be?The current reality facing schools is one of rapidly changing social and political conditions that affect educators, students, and communities as a whole. Whether it's a question of how personal choices impact collective health, or finding the right balance in helping a school community process and respond to current events, school leaders are grappling with the role of educators in teaching citizen behavior in the classroom. Does our current “civics” curriculum go far enough in helping students identify ways they can become engaged members of a thriving society? Or is “civics” just the tip of the iceberg, leaving the larger topics of developing personal agency and community engagement unexplored in our schools? In this episode, Tim Fish and Lisa Kay Solomon are joined by Baratunde Thurston, award-winning writer, activist, comedian, and host of the podcast How to Citizen With Baratunde. Together, they explore the idea of changing our mindset about the word “citizen,” from engaging with it as a noun to treating it as a verb—a set of guiding principles that can be translated into actions each person can take to contribute to society. Rather than thinking about “citizen” as describing where someone is from, Baratunde argues that we should think about it as describing how people behave as members of a community, and that schools should take an active role in helping students develop proactive citizen behaviors that will serve them, and their communities, well.Baratunde shares his “four pillars” of How to Citizen, as well as personal stories about how his experiences as a student at an independent school shaped his own worldview and citizen behaviors. He also explores ideas about the different ways in which school leaders, educators, and students can understand the concept of power and how both individuals and institutions can exercise power effectively. Lisa, Tim, and Baratunde delve together into questions about how schools can create environments that encourage students to clarify their own perspectives, engage in respectful debate, and find ways to participate in creating the change they want to see in their communities. Some of the key questions Tim and Lisa explore in this interview about growing citizens and developing thriving citizen behaviors at school include:How does teaching students “how to citizen” fit into our broader ideas about the purpose of schools? Why, and how, should school leaders encourage the active teaching of “citizen” as a verb at this particular moment in history? How can schools provide appropriate opportunities for students to practice personal agency and changemaking? What's the difference between teaching civics and teaching citizening—and how can schools become more deliberate about including both?Resource List:Baratunde's Podcast: Listen to How to Citizen, the podcast that inspired Tim and Lisa's conversation with Baratunde about the role of schools in growing citizens.Baratunde's Newsletter: Sign up to get regular updates from Baratunde and learn more about his work.Living While Black: NBC's Brian Williams called Baratunde's TED Talk “one of the greatest of all time.”In This Episode:“I think the founding of public education, citizenship was a key element. And I remember always wondering, like, what did we mean when we said school was a place where we would create citizens? And are we in fact doing that? Have we ever really done it effectively? And for whom or what, who did we think of as a citizen and what opportunities were available?” (2:19)“(To be a citizen) is not just to be born in a certain place and inherit rights and privileges, but to live in this practice of self-government. We're trying to live together. We're trying to live together with a lot of difference and we're trying to rule ourselves. Not be ruled by others.” (3:08)“We're taught your power is your vote. And your vote is your voice. And it's partially true, but it's not the whole story.” (4:49)“It's such a basic concept, but educational institutions are not just there to educate the students. Everyone should be learning. And I think if you're the leader of a school, that does not exempt you from learning, and that's true in every domain where there's this kind of structural power.” (25:01)Full TranscriptAbout Our Guest:Baratunde Thurston holds space for hard and complex conversations with his blend of humor, wisdom, and compassion. Prerna Wadikar, a student who hails from Bengaluru, has won the Vice Chancellor's Social Impact Award at the University of Oxford. The recognition was for her work in making portable energy access more affordable by developing a technological model using a lithium-ion battery. The technology developed by her resembles a power bank that can be charged using either a solar panel or an electric grid, both embedded in the device itself. She also highlighted that the device was less than 500 grams heavy and that a daisy chain of 10 such units could even generate power to run a small refrigerator. Wadikar, who began her career as a distribution marketing professional in the Karnataka capital, has worked in different sectors within and outside the country, expanding the outreach of her background in technology and public policy. Wadikar hopes to scale up her product and her social enterprise named Jeeva Global to offer support to micro and nano entrepreneurs, mostly deprived of government support, to help them better their livelihoods in the days to come. Spoke to her on the show and I hope you enjoy the conversation! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gmbwithkay/message

Knowledge without practice can damage the business.” “I often say we don't sell carpet, we sell family blessings, we sell experiences, we sell stories and the carpet is free” “What I have learned in my life is that destination comes from the mind, but direction comes from the heart. If you are not driven by love and compassion, then we do not have direction” “I'm sure that anything in business, if it is not driven by love, it is not going to sustain” Mr Nand Chaudhary bio: Nand Kishore Chaudhary, a globally acclaimed social entrepreneur, is the founder of Jaipur Rugs, one of India's largest manufacturers of hand knotted rugs and is often referred to as ‘Gandhi of the Carpet Industry'. Self-Determination Self-determination empowers those who are most affected to be in the driver’s seat of policy-making decisions. For example, if an oil company wants to run a pipeline through Indigenous land, Indigenous communities themselves would decide based on their values and the impact on their families, water, air, and land. NDN collective works to restore self-determination through three pillars: defense, development, and decolonization. Decolonization European colonization was a system of white supremacy that annihilated complex Indigenous populations, cultures, languages, beliefs, land, and governing systems. The work of decolonization includes dismantling white supremacist systems of economic extraction and governance; education about the totality of colonial history; and the revitalization of Native languages and ways of being. Reclaiming Indigenous heritage is also an act of healing past traumas from colonization. Land Back A key tenet of self-determination and decolonization is the “land back” movement. Theft of Indigenous lands was one of the fundamental ways Europeans colonized America. Stealing land and extracting its resources decimated both the land and the people who lived on it. The land back movement aims to right this wrong by returning public lands, like National Parks and National Forests, to the care of Indigenous People. Land back does not mean removing Americans from their homes. Instead, it means returning the land to Native stewardship focusing on preservation and rejuvenation. Tiara Ataii is the founder and director of SolidariTEE, the largest student-led charity in the UK. She is also a final year undergrad in 'Middle Eastern Studies' and a member of Robinson college. In 2019, Tiara was awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Social Impact Award for her organisation. SolidariTEE raises awareness and funds for the refugee crisis by selling t-shirts on over 40 university campuses across the UK. When Tiara started the campaign in her first year at Cambridge, she sold 600 t-shirts on her own, off her bike. Three years later, the campaign has almost 500 volunteers involved and raised over 150.000 pounds last year. Funds are invested in providing legal, sustainable aid to refugees in Greece. In this interview, Tiara reflects back on her journey with SolidariTEE: how it all started, what hurdles she overcame along the way and which new challenges are currently emerging for refugees during the pandemic. Especially now, in times of Covid-19, refugees are exposed to even further risks. Threats to their health and wellbeing have worsened, as a consequence of living in tightly packed spaces, with no room to practise basic hygiene and social distancing. Tiara powerfully demonstrates how students can express solidarity and speak out in support of refugees. Visit www.solidaritee.org.uk to find out more and purchase your own t-shirt.

This January, FilmRise released the chilling true crime documentary “Unseen,” from award-winning director and producer Laura Paglin. For two years, women had been disappearing from Mount Pleasant – a poverty-stricken, African-American neighborhood in Cleveland – with little investigation from police and city officials. Then in 2009, a reported rape led Cleveland police to a grisly discovery— the bodies of eleven women decomposing in the house and yard of known sex offender Anthony Sowell. How was it that a serial killer was able to operate virtually in plain sight for two years?Told in riveting detail by the women who were able to escape Sowell’s deadly clutches, “Unseen” draws viewers into a world where marginalized women, plagued by drug use, shunned by society and dismissed by the police, became easy prey for a predatory monster. “Unseen” questions not only the police failures in this case but also why Sowell’s neighbors turned a blind eye to his bizarre activities. Through intimate, revealing interviews, Paglin gives voice to Sowell’s victims, allowing them to tell their stories, showing us how they attempt to come to grips with their horrific experiences. “Unseen” was an Official Selection at Cleveland International Film Festival and DOC NYC. It was also a contender for the Social Impact Award at Greenwich International Film Festival. Unseen acts as a haunting indictment of a police force that failed its citizens.” UNSEEN: A True Crime Documentary About a Cleveland Serial Killer and the Women He Preyed On-Laura Paglin*Available for sale or rental on Amazon &iTunes. www.unseendocumentary.com

Medicine waste is a big issue worldwide. Only in Greece, over 14 tons of medicinal drugs are thrown away while more than 2 million people live under the poverty line. Teti Psarrou, Head of Marketing at GIVMED explains how they’ve managed to create a community of users who donate their redundant medicines to those who need them, but can’t purchase them. They have partnered with several organisations and NGOs in order to make the matchmaking process more efficient. What is remarkable is that the community within the last 4 months has donated drugs valued at 10.000 euros. They are already looking to expand their network outside of Athens and other countries. GIVMED was recently awarded the 2016 judges’ Social Impact Award. Interviewed by Sakis Triantafyllakis for Tech Talks Central during the eHealth Forum Festival in Technopolis, October 2016.

Xinhua News Agency and The Associate Press have pledged to further enhance their innovative cooperation in the digitalization of traditional media. Xinhua President Cai Mingzhao and AP CEO Cary Pruitt made the pledge on the sidelines of the third World Media Summit held in the Qatari capital Doha. Cai said Xinhua and The AP have already made numerous explorations in digital migration for media groups, adding that Xinhua values its cooperation and exchanges with The AP in the face of their common challenges from the Internet. Since 2015, Xinhua has made a number of experimental attempts, including introducing robot systems to draft news stories and launching on-scene news via Xinhua's application on mobile phones. The efforts have enabled reporters to do live reporting with hand-held devices. He also said what Xinhua is trying to do is to bring readers to the scene where news is happening, yet there are always limits to today's news coverage, whether it is in the form of text, pictures or videos. Xinhua expects to enhance their cooperation with The AP in media innovation. For his part, Pruitt said The AP has observed and admired the innovation at Xinhua and how much Xinhua has done to integrate and bring digital platforms to it. He said The AP recognizes the need for innovation, and is looking forward to deepening its partnership with Xinhua. This is Special English. China is preparing to launch a Mars probe in 2020, and it is expected to arrive at the red planet the following year. An aerospace expert said that although China is not the first Asian nation to send a probe to Mars, it wants to start at a higher level. Ye Peijian is an academic of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and leader of the team with the China Academy of Space Technology. Ye said the probe will include an orbiter, a lander and a rover. The orbiter will conduct global surveys of Mars; and the entry device will land a rover on the surface. Parachute and reverse thrust engine technology will probably be used in the landing. He said although there is less than five years to go till the launch, they are confident. The probe is being developed by the team that completed the Chang'e-3 lunar probe. A 3D demonstration video from the academy shows how the Mars probe will fly around 10 months before closing on the red planet. Controllers on Earth will guide it into a large elliptical orbit and the orbiter and lander will separate. The orbiter will stay in orbit for at least a year to photograph key areas and monitor the planet's environment. You're listening to Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Three Chinese nationals have received top honors from the British Council when it handed out the 2016 Education UK Alumni Awards in Beijing. Nine alumni of British universities were among the finalists for the awards, having stood out from more than 800 applicants from across China. Ling Yifan is a cartoonist who graduated from Birmingham City University. She received a Professional Achievement Award. More than 300 students from various Mexican universities as well as entrepreneurs, diplomats, lawmakers and journalists have been invited to the Chinese Embassy to celebrate the annual Chinese Culture Day. The Chinese ambassador to Mexico Qiu Xiaoqi hailed the curiosity of Mexicans about Chinese culture and said many young people in China are also interested in getting to know about Mexico. The ambassador explained that it is important to hold the Chinese Culture Day in Mexico as it helps to bring new generations of people from both countries closer together. This was the fourth Chinese Culture Day in Mexico. The event opened the door to sharing different forms of Chinese artistic expression with the public. The four-hour-event included dances, Chinese and local cuisine, a fashion show, and a concert by Chinese singer Pu Jie, who combined Chinese songs with interpretations of Mexican classics. Former Mexican ambassador to China Sergio Ley Lopez said at the party that such events are needed as Mexicans know little about modern China; and such events are a treasure, which can lead to a greater understanding in every way between the two countries. People living in small cities generally enjoy better sleep than those in larger ones in China, and negative emotions are the biggest contributor to sleep disorders. According to a report released ahead of World Sleep Day, which fell on Monday, negative emotions are a major obstacle to quality sleep for people in China. The China Sleep Quality Index 2016 was released by consultant firm Dataway, together with a leading mattress producer. The research was based on feedback between January and March to online questionnaires sent to Internet users in 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. Those surveyed had an average sleep index of 69 out of a possible 100, indicating an overall gap in the quality of sleep for Chinese people. The sleep index was based on seven sub-indices, including the ability to fall asleep quickly, the ability to have regular sleeping hours and the ability to control emotions. Respondents scored 50 in their ability to control emotions, ranking the lowest of all seven sub-indices. That means negative emotions were the biggest contributor to bad sleep. The report also showed that residents of bigger cities in general had slightly worse sleep. People living in first-tier cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou averaged 67 in the index, while those in middle-sized and small cities averaged 70. You're listening to Special English. China has entered its flood season, 11 days earlier than previous years. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said heavy rains have hit parts of south China, pushing water levels in some rivers well above warning lines. The National Meteorological Center forecast that strong rain will continue to pelt south China. It urged relevant departments to strengthen disaster prevention. The center said some provinces will be hit by rain or storms, with maximum rainfall reaching up to 50 millimeters per hour. The center issued a blue alert for rainstorms in southern regions on Monday night, warning that people should be alert for possible risks including mud-rock flows and landslides. China has a four-tier warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed in turn by orange, yellow and blue. This is Special English. The first stage of fieldwork has been completed for a project to help preserve China's ethnic minority languages and dialects, including some on the verge of being wiped out. Specialists from the Ministry of Education worked in 80 fieldwork sites in ethnic minority regions and 50 sites with different Chinese dialects to help preserve the languages by collecting and documenting their use. The ministry and the State Language Commission launched the project in May with the goal of collecting and preserving the languages. The five-year-project is also designed to augment and streamline the current multi-media database of Chinese languages compiled in 2008. In 2015, the preservation project began from places where dialects and ethnic minority languages are in dire need of conservation, including the provinces of Shanxi, Zhejiang and Fujian, as well as Chongqing municipality. The project will expand to cover more localities. The Ministry of Education has urged local governments to build up their regional museums of language culture. You're listening to Special English.
