You're listening to Bears Beyond The Gate episode 196. Yes 196.We're three fans who love the club, the game and all things Bears. Each episode we talk about the game that's gone, the game that's coming up and anything else that takes our fancy as long as it is vaguely Bears related. We try to be as balanced as possible but ultimately we are trying to reflect the views and opinions of paying punters from all ages, backgrounds and demographics. We don't take ourselves too seriously but we do try to say it as we see it!This week we mull over the third defeat in a row at Franklins Gardens and wonder whether ‘the best form of defence is attack' strategy has now run its course and given that we have a play-off place hanging in the balance with only three games left, is there any way of tweaking the game plan to keep us in the top four? The next time that we see the Bears will be The Big Day Out in Cardiff and sadly we imagine that Bath players and fans will be licking their lips in anticipation. It has to be a yet another must-win for us, but how exactly are we going to do that? Finally, a new song, ‘Come on you Bristol Bears', has been published by lifelong fan and charity fundraiser, Paul Hobbs. All download proceeds are being donated to the Foundation and you can find out more by clicking here.Let us know what you think!

With a very young and inexperienced Gloucester side narrowly losing away to Newcastle in the Premiership Cup (and so far, no highlights seem to be available), our attentions this week were focused on Glos-Hartpury and their bid for a third consecutive PRW Final appearance. After a slow start, the girls once again delivered with a fine performance and comfortable victory against Bristol Bears. We chat through the game, the standout players and why all of you lovely pod listeners should try and get down to the Stone X a week Sunday! We also discuss the impact of Ilona Maher on the PWR and whether her slightly unimpressive performances on the pitch actually matter in the grand scheme of things. Meanwhile in the world of Rugby League, a bit of razzamatazz over in Vegas got us wondering if something similar would work in Union? Would we want Gloucester involved? Finally another week, another dummy spat out by Championship sides, this time over unequal rights in the Premiership Cup. Do they have a point, or are their moans starting to become tiresome?Ed PriceJim HarleyCherry Jam is gratefully sponsored by PGT LLP

You're listening to Bears Beyond The Gate, a Bristol Bears podcast made by fans for fans. We three regulars at Ashton Gate who love the club, the game and all things Bears. This week we look back on two Saturday fixtures with the Women going first with a bonus point victory 43-29 win against Leicester Tigers women at Ashton Gate and the Men managing to snatch defeat from the Jaws of a Draw at the Stade Marcel Michelin in Clermont-Ferrand.It was another welcome 5 points for the Women in their quest for a play off semi final but given that they conceded 29 points to a team that were beaten 100 nil last weekend by Saracens, does their defence review definitely fall into the ‘learnings and work-ons' category. Furthermore, it's our longest and most in-depth review of a Bears' Women game ever!As for the Men, it was the second year in a row that they got dumped out of two European cup competitions in one fell swoop albeit in much more courageous circumstances than that dark night in Galway last season. There is no doubt that we were handed an insanely tough group but should we be expecting more and did we get our game management right on the night? The debate rages. Finally, we look forward to the visit of Newcastle Falcons next Sunday with all our fingers and toes crossed that we didn't pick up any more injuries in France. Is five points a non negotiable or will it be a trickier fixture than our respective league positions might suggest.Check out Dream XV Rugby by clicking hereLet us know what you think!

To mark the European heavyweights from Dublin's visit to Ashton gate on Sunday, former Bristol Bear and Leinster player Ian Madigan joins us for an episode packed with insights and nostalgia. He shares treasured memories from his time at Bristol, revealing what it was like to play under Pat Lam's leadership and how it shaped his approach to rugby. We also talk about Ian's transition to life off the field, where he's now navigating the worlds of television and marketing, and the exciting news of expecting his first child. Plus, Ian spills the beans on Leinster's strategies ahead of their Champions Cup face-off with the Bears, giving fans something to chew on before the big game. And he thinks Jordie Barrett will play.Ever wondered what goes into making a rugby commentator tick? We also discuss the art of punditry with Ian as he outlines the delicate balance between live analysis and setting expectations pre-match. Ian reflects on his journey from Bordeaux to Bristol, motivated by Pat Lam's compelling team vision, and shares insights into the changing dynamics between top leagues and the English championship. His anecdotes about building a team from the ground up offer a rare glimpse into the challenges and rewards of creating a winning dynamic, even if that meant playing in driving snow at Rotherham in front of one man and his husky. So grab a pint of the dark stuff (Guinness or even BBF nitro stout) and join us for a stroll down memory lane as Mads takes us through unforgettable moments with the Bristol Bears, highlighting the camaraderie and mentorship that defines the sport, the competitive edge between the Pro 14 and the English Premiership, and the pressures faced by coaches in these high-stakes environments. As we wrap up with anticipation for the upcoming Leinster match, it's clear that the ties within the rugby community run deep, and the bonds formed on and off the pitch are what truly make the journey worthwhile. Cheers to the weekend and the enduring spirit of rugby!...Up the European bears!Let us know what you think!

With the Autumn Internationals done and dusted its back to the league clashes as Max's Bristol Bears put on a delicious display or running rugby to outshine Joe Marler on his big day.But what about the build up, how do rugby players get ready for such big matches? Nandos? Did you say Nandos? In any case the game was amazing but what happened between Gabi Ibitoye and Joe Marler? We break down a fabulous contest at the Stoop. We also put the final test match between Ireland and Australia under the microscope. Have Ireland peaked? Who was the Wallabies Man of Tour? Can Prendergast and Crowley ever emulate Johnny Sexton? Do Ireland deserve to make up the bulk of the Lions? Questions that need to be answered. Then it's onto a round up of the Premiership with some big couple of results while over in the URC, Edinburgh almost blow a 35 point lead... Plus friend of the show Adam Hastings suffers a nasty injury, which makes us sad. Then the big one.... It's the Maul or Nothing Champions Cup Preview and there are some seriously tasty ties to look ahead to... From a biased perspective none more so than Bristol vs Leinster where the boys will finally be reunited. We even have a chance to discuss the RFU Bill Sweeney pay scandal.Lots of lols and lots of love for listening and watching. We love you! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

After a week off because the Internet in Northern Cyprus is a little temperamental, we are back to discuss the superb if nerve jangling win over Bristol Bears followed by the slightly disappointing defeat away to Sale (despite securing two bonus points). The lads chat through the vast improvements seen in our attacking play, picking out the notable performances and players while also addressing the continued nagging issue of the defence (which is average at best). We also discuss the start of Glos-Hartpury's bid for a Three-peat of title wins, the fall out from the shock resignation of the head of PWR and preview the Gloucester Bath match this weekend. There was a genuine if not tempered sense of optimism ahead of Gloucester's first league game of the season. But a youthful Saracens side were far too savvy and clinical leaving the Cherry and Whites with only a try bonus point. We chat through our thoughts on the game, what went wrong, what might be the easy fixes and whether the optimism we all had was simply misplaced on this occasion or wildly delusional. We also discuss why Jim's ears are bleeding in The Shed and why we all think we might scrape a couple of extra points away to Bristol on Friday.

WRP 191 - Bon joué! Another packed show from around the oval world! Siwan Lilllicrap, the former Wales captain, joins us on the pod and from France Francois Ratier - former Canada Women's coach. Siwan chats about the various hats she is wearing now having retired from the game; mainly her role with the WRU being the person in charge of the younger end of the pathway. She details the progress made, the opportunities youngsters now have and the joy is being a part of processes that she fought so hard to achieve! Having played for both Bristol Bears and Gloucester-Hartpury she is the perfect observer to talk about the two semi finals in the PWR (English league) where Bristol made history in beating Saracens and the champs saw off Exeter. Francosi Ratier, the former Canada coach that took that to the 2014 Rugby World Cup final is now the head man at Stade Bordelais. The club, again, won the title at the weekend, so we interrupt the celebrations to chat about lifting the trophy and generally about life in France. There's Rori Taylorson with all the news as well from around the globe with results from another Canadian side and South Africa. #WRP womensrugbypod@gmail.com Coming soon Hosted on Acast.
