Robert Murray M'Cheyne died at the age of 29. Yet his life continues to inspire the servants of Christ today, and his passion for holiness, and sincere godliness, stand as a testament to the grace of God made effective in an otherwise weak man. This week we look at M'Cheyne from three angles, taking in the shape of his life, the character of his labours, and finally the special love he had for the Jewish people. While scholars of ancient Mediterranean literature have focused their efforts heavily on explaining why authors would write pseudonymously or anonymously, less time has been spent exploring why an author would write orthonymously (that is, under their own name). The Author in Early Christian Literature (Cambridge UP, 2025) explores how early Christian writers began to care deeply about 'correct' attribution of both Christian and non-Christian literature for their own apologetic purposes, as well as how scholars have overlooked the function that orthonymity plays in some early Christian texts. Orthonymity was not only a decision made by a writer regarding how to attribute one's own writings, but also how to classify other writers' texts based on proper or improper attribution. This Element urges us to examine forms of authorship that are often treated as an unexamined default, as well as to more robustly consider when, how, for whom, and for what purposes an instance of authorial attribution is deemed 'correct. Today, we delve into the profound theological insights of Horatius Bonar's work "The Blood of the Covenant." This exploration reveals the significance of blood throughout Scripture, highlighting its role as a symbol of life, sacrifice, and redemption. From the bruised heel of the woman's seed to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, we uncover the powerful narrative of deliverance through bloodshed, emphasizing the essential themes of atonement, justification, and reconciliation with God. Bonar eloquently articulates how the blood of Christ serves as the purchase price for the Church and each believer, establishing a new covenant that offers peace, cleansing, and eternal life. He examines the multifaceted blessings associated with the blood, including its capacity to bring us close to God, provide protection, and empower us to overcome sin. As we reflect on the transformative power of the blood, we are reminded of its enduring efficacy and the hope it offers to the guiltiest among us. The third and final instalment of our mini-series on the three Bonar brothers who became ministers of the gospel in 19th-century Scotland. This week we consider the life of the youngest, Andrew Bonar, who ministered principally in Collace, Perthshire, and in Glasgow. We consider the graces and gifts, weaknesses and witness of this humble, happy servant of Christ. Featured Content: – 'Andrew Bonar and Fellowship with Christ', Iain H. Murray, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 567, December 2010. – 'Andrew A. Bonar—The Youngest of the Three Bonar Brothers', David Campbell, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 723, December 2023. – 'I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say', a hymn of Horatius Bonar (public domain). Featured Hymn: 'I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say' I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest; Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My breast.” I came to Jesus as I was, Weary, and worn, and sad; I found in Him a resting-place, And He has made me glad. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give The living water; thirsty one, Stoop down and drink, and live.” I came to Jesus, and I drank Of that life-giving stream; My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, And now I live in Him. I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world's Light; Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise, And all thy day be bright.” I looked to Jesus, and I found In Him my Star, my Sun; And in that light of life I'll walk Till travelling days are done. Amen. We are grateful to Mr. Jack Adair for singing this hymn. The second of three episodes inspired by David Campbell's mini-series on three remarkable brothers who ministered in 19th Century Scotland. This week we consider Horatius Bonar (1808–1889), pastor, author, and hymnwriter. We read David Campbell's article on him, an excerpt from Iain H. Murray, and then read a piece by Bonar himself critiquing the idea of 'religion without theology'. We close with a rendition of Bonar's hymn, Everlasting Light. Featured Content: – 'Horatius Bonar—The second of the three Bonar brothers', David Campbell, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 722, November 2023. – Excerpt from 'Horatius Bonar (1808–1889) and his Writings', Iain H. Murray, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 314, November 1989. – 'Religion Without Theology' (taken from the preface of Catechisms of the Scottish Reformation, edited by Horatius Bonar, London 1866), featured in the Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 93, June 1971. – 'Everlasting Life', a hymn of Horatius Bonar (public domain). Featured Hymn: Everlasting Light 1 O everlasting Light! Shine graciously within; Brightest of all on earth that's bright, Come, shine away my sin. 2 O everlasting Truth! Truest of all that's true; Sure guide of erring age or youth, Lead me, and teach me too. 3 O everlasting Strength! Uphold me in the way; Bring me, in spite of foes, at length To joy, and light, and day. 4 O everlasting Love; Wellspring of grace and peace, Pour down Thy fullness from above, Bid doubt, and trouble cease. 5 O everlasting Rest! Lift off life's load of care; Relieve, revive this burdened breast, And ev'ry sorrow bear. 7 Thou art in heav'n our all; Our all on earth art Thou; Upon Thy glorious name we call: Lord Jesus, bless us now. The first of three episodes inspired by David Campbell's mini-series on three remarkable brothers who ministered in 19th Century Scotland. This week we consider the life, ministry, and faithfulness of John James Bonar. Not as well known as his brothers Horatius and Andrew, his ministry unveils a steady commitment to parish ministry that eshewed distraction and worldly ambition. Featured Content: – 'John James Bonar—The eldest of the three Bonar brothers', David Campbell, Banner of Truth Magazine, Issue 721, October 2023. – Excerpt from A Scottish Christian Heritage, by Iain H. Murray (Edinburgh: Banner of Truth, 2006), pages 160-161. Purchase: https://banneroftruth.org/store/history-biography/a-scottish-christian-heritage/ – 'Going Home', a hymn of Dr. John James Bonar, which appears in the Parting Memorial of John James Bonar, D. D., First Minister of Saint Andrew's Parish and Congregation, Greenock, Being some Record of Services in Connection with his Funeral (Greenock: James MacKelvie & Sons, 1892). 'Going Home' 'I'm going home!' the Saint exclaimed; Bright grew his closing eye; He thought of Jesus and his rest, And did not fear to die. 'I'm going home! I'm winged for flight To yonder peaceful clime; Prepared to go, I only wait My God's appointed time. I'm going home, to dwell with Him Who bled and died for me; For He hath said that where He is There shall His servants be. 'I'm going home, transporting thought! Lord Jesus, quickly come, And bear my ransomed soul away To her celestial home!' 'I'm going home!' the Saint exclaimed; Bright grew his closing eye; He thought of Jesus and his rest, And did not fear to die. We are grateful to Mr. Jack Adair for singing this hymn. For this episode of the DCF Show podcast, Data Center Frontier's Editor in Chief Matt Vincent and Senior Editor David Chernicoff speak with Burns & McDonnell's Robert Bonar, PE, LEED AP, Vice President, Mission Critical Facilities, and Christine Wood, Vice President leading the firm's Dallas-Fort Worth Global Facilities practice. Burns & McDonnell is a provider of engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions, who as part of its mission-critical and data center practice is brought in to help plan, design, permit, construct and manage client projects in the space. Bonar and Wood begin the podcast by providing an overview of the company and their roles there, along with their backgrounds in the industry. An overarching theme of the discussion is how a client's selection of a data center and mission critical consultant is based on more than just an ability to meet service needs. The discussion also covers current data center industry construction trends, especially in the areas of siting and power, while probing the similiarities and differences in planning data center builds for enterprise, colocation and hyperscale clients. D-FW Data Center Market Focus Cushman & Wakefield's 2023 Dallas-Fort Worth Data Center Report stated that the Dallas-Fort Worth data center markets saw record absorption of 386 Megawatts in 2023 -- a nearly 7x increase since 2020 -- driven by exponential growth in demand for cloud computing and AI/machine learning applications. Cushman & Wakefield further reported the Dallas-Fort Worth market's vacancy to be at an all-time low of 3.73% last year, with colocation rents and data center land prices there continuing to rise. The commercial real estate services company added: "Despite a robust construction pipeline – 1.4 million square feet that can provide 225 MW – the vast majority of the market's new data center supply for 2024 and 2025 has been pre-leased. Cloud providers securing large campuses through pre-leasing and AI/ML companies leasing the market's few remaining pockets of available space are the primary drivers of DFW's record demand." DCF asked Wood and Bonar about the D-FW data center market and Burns & McDonnell's role in it, including the firm's background and present developments there, as well as the location's future roadmap regarding power, interconnectivity, workforce factors. Here's a time line of key discussion points on the podcast: 2:27 - After introductions and table-setting, the Burns & McDonnell experts emphasize the importance of looking at data center client needs holistically and getting ahead of what they need for a given project. 4:53 - Discussion turns to the impact of generative AI on the data center industry and the uptick in demand for first-of-a-kind designs. 8:44 - Further exploration of how the rapid pace of change in the data center industry has bred increased demand in the market for qualities such as speed-to-market and first-of-a-kind design. 9:22 - DCF inquires about planning for different types of data center builds, and the differences between enterprise, colocation, and hyperscale developments, as well as the impact of AI support, are explored. 14:34 - The discussion further illuminates challenges and changes in the data center industry, including the influence of AI technology on new designs and in future-proofing facilities. 15:04 - Burns & McDonell's Wood discusses the D-FW data center market, highlighting its growth potential due to its central location, low real estate costs, and robust power availability. 20:25 - To conclude, DCF's editors circle back to the topic of renewables and solar consulting in relation to data centers, leading to a discussion on combining solar with battery storage for future data center needs. Join us in this conversation with Jessica Bonar as we discuss fostering the gifts we have so they come to their true potential and purpose, asking questions that make you really uncomfortable, the polarized world we live in, how we are not our past and so much more! One of my first impressions of Jessica was how authentic she is and the amazing overflowing of energy she has. She talks about how we try to put ourselves in a position to not allow growth because we have to pretend we've already grown. She shares that we need to find enough humility to be the worst person in the room so we don't always have to be the worst person in the room at that skill. We need to admit “I don't know” so that we can know. Jessica's purpose statement is, “I must inspire people with simple solutions to complex problems that will change their life.” This is what drives and fuels her in all things; as a Benefits Advisor for businesses, as mother of two, as a friend, as a mentor, and as an Inspirational Speaker. As a feisty, independent woman she embraces that she is a deep feeler and explores life with a vulnerability that creates connections of depth and breadth with people of all walks of life. She considers coffee a love language. A dog will put an instant smile on her face. And, if stranded on a desert island, the presence of creamy, Jif peanut butter will boost her morale ten-fold. What if every person in our industry was required to get their hands dirty doing installations and working with customers on the ground level? We'd probably have a lot more highly capable people like this episode's guest, someone who can't overstate the importance of experiential knowledge. In today's episode, Tim speaks with Dan Bonar (VP of Residential Products at ICC Chimney) about his journey from his teenage years to where he is today and the lessons he's learned along the way. Dan provides a priceless perspective on prioritizing customers before profits without going out of business. In this episode, you'll learn: How—in a highly commercialized space—do you differentiate your business's offerings without lowering prices (the answer is in solving problems, not replicating products). How to politely decline favors (the person asking will understand how valuable your time is after this). How to bridge the growing gap between manufacturers and retailers (the key to this is changing your mindset). When done for the right reasons, selling is all about providing value to customers through your product. Listen to this episode to redefine what selling means to you.
