If you were a kid in the 90s, there was no way you could have avoided the phenomenon that was Pokémon. And to fully capitalise on the hype, we got Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back. Directed by Kunihiko Yuyama (the chief director of the Japanese anime Pokémon television series), Pokémon: The First Movie is indeed the first theatrical release in the Pokémon franchise. First released in Japan in July of 1998, the Pokémon movie was adapted into English by Nintendo and 4Kids Entertainment, and released by Warner Bros. in November 1999. Only recently released on Netflix is the full CGI remake of the movie - Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution. We considered reviewing the new movie only to realise that it really is for the most part the same movie. So here we are taking the opportunity to rewind and review the original and the first. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, scientists clone a new powerful Pokémon from a fossil of the legendary Mew. The result is a living weapon with immense physic powers – Mewtwo. Ash (Veronica Taylor), Pikachu (Ikue Otani), Misty (Rachael Lillis), and Brock (Eric Stuart), amongst a few other trainers and Team Rocket are invited to a secret island and face off against the world’s most powerful Pokémon.
