This week I speak to fintech entrepreneur Abraham Okusanya. From growing up in relative poverty in rural Africa. 3am starts working in the family business while still at school. And obtaining a scholarship to study in the UK. Abraham shows that where you start need not hold you back. A dalliance with consumer debt, at the same time as he was made redundant at the height of the financial crisis, galvanised Abraham to recalibrate his life. Honest money conversations with his new wife, learning new money skills and starting his own consultancy were all part of his money recovery plan. An epiphany during his consultancy work led Abraham to start a financial software company, Timeline App. Today Abraham and his team help people answer the toughest question we all have, 'Am I going to be OK financially?' This is a lovely conversation, full of humility, honesty and good humour, which touches on so many aspects of our relationship with money.

Since George Osbourne pronounced the words “No one will have to buy an annuity again” in 2014, the retirement market has changed from a safety-first environment to one full of risk and responsibility. No longer forced to convert your hard-earned savings into an annuity – a guaranteed income for life in exchange for your pension pot – pension freedoms legislation allows you more freedom on how to spend your retirement savings. Fundamentally this means more people decide to invest their retirement savings and take an income to meet their expenditure needs. My guest on The Retirement Café Podcast this week is Abraham Okusanya – an intelligent chap who recognised how difficult it was for financial planners to help clients work out the best way to take an income from their investments. There are so many factors to consider, such as the inflation risk, longevity and market performance. Abraham runs a research and consultancy firm called FinalytiQ, who provides investment and technical support to financial planners working with retirees. He is also the founder of the Timeline software. Timeline enables financial planners like us help their clients work out how to ensure their pension savings last a lifetime. Here's my interview with Abraham Okusanya, in episode 012 of The Retirement Café Podcast.

In this episode, I'm joined by Abraham Okusanya, author of a new book called Beyond The 4% Rule: The science of retirement portfolios that last a lifetime. Regular (and loyal) listeners to this podcast will remember Abraham from episode 11, back in February 2015, and more recently in episode 114, in September 2016, when we spoke about 'brainless portfolios'. Abraham is hosting a conference in London next week called The Science of Retirement, and he's just published a new book called Beyond The 4% Rule: The science of retirement portfolios that last a lifetime. Before I share our conversation with you, here's the blurb from the book, to give you some context: "Retirement income planning used to be so simple. Most people never had to worry about how to convert their retirement savings into income for the rest of their lives. Today's low annuity rates, closure of increasing numbers of defined benefit schemes and the Pension Freedoms, introduced by the UK Government in 2015, ripped up the retirement income planning rulebook. "The book confronts the challenge of how to secure a sustainable income that lasts a lifetime from your portfolio. It delves into the detail of the various withdrawal strategies, asset allocation and the unavoidable question of how long before you pop your clogs. This book helps retirees and their advisers navigate the treacherous retirement income landscape, using sound empirical evidence and practical application." The reason I wanted to chat to Abraham about his book was because we often refer to the 4% rule and it's become one of those throwaway financial rules of thumb, often mentioned without really digging into the details. As Abraham will explain in a moment, the rule is based on really robust science, but there's more to consider for individuals - in particular, the impact of fees, the underlying asset allocation and the assumption that retirement income will stay at the same level for the rest of life - spoiler alert, it doesn't!

I'm delighted to welcome back Abraham Okusanya of Finalytiq to help me cover a topic which is so important - investing in retirement. It's important because if there's one time in your life you really can't afford to get it wrong, then it's in retirement.   Podcast: Subscribe in iTunes | Play in new window | Download Sponsor Message This podcast is brought to you with the help of Seven Investment Management, a firm of investment managers based in London. They specialise in multi-asset investing, bringing institutional investing techniques to ordinary people like you and me. 7IM put their name to my show and to my site because they believe in what I'm doing, trying to get decent, easy-to-understand financial information out to the world. I'm very grateful to them for their support. You can see what they're up to at 7im.co.uk Investing in Retirement The traditional view of investing in retirement is to reduce the risk of your pensions and other investments as you approach the great transition, and then cruise through retirement, being fairly cautious, hopefully not spending too much. These days, there is quite a bit to think about, particularly thanks to the pensions freedoms which mean more people than ever are opting not to secure an income with an annuity but opt for unsecured income drawdown instead. In this session you will learn: The key considerations for investing in retirement Why the Pensions Freedoms of 2015 are so important and what they mean for you The difference between a chicken and an egg The dangers of sequencing risk Some strategies for mitigating that risk Some ideas as to the order in which you should spend your money The difference between investing for natural income or total return, and why it matters Resources Website: Abraham's company, Finalytiq App: Timeline - The Safe Withdrawal app Social: Abraham on Twitter   Share the love If this show is of any use to you, it would help me massively if you would take the time to leave me a review on iTunes. Two weeks ago we talked about securing an income in retirement. Today I'm going to look in-depth at unsecured income, or what ordinary people call Income Drawdown. You can see what they're up to at 7im.co.uk Income Drawdown The difference between secured and unsecured drawdown is essentially about who takes the risk. With a secured income you have someone else guaranteeing to provide you with the specified income, and it is up to them to do whatever is necessary to meet their obligations. With unsecured income drawdown, you are in control, and on your own head be it. If you run out of money, too bad. If you still have too much money left when you die, then you haven't spent enough! The investment risk, the withdrawal rate, the asset mix, is all down to you. So this week I want to look at the mechanics of income drawdown, and then next week, I'm bringing back friend of the show Abraham Okusanya to give us a steer as to how to withdraw money and how to invest for retirement. In this session you will learn: That Income Drawdown is not just about pensions Why the Pensions Freedoms of 2015 are so important How income tax works in pension drawdown Why death benefits should always be front of mind when planning your drawdown strategy Why it is worth checking ahead of time whether your own pensions are flexible Why consolidation of your pensions makes life easier And why you should be very careful doing so Why you should check your expression of wishes on your pensions   Transcript As always there is a transcript available for the entire show. you can get it by clicking the huge blue button below: [Coming Soon]   Share the love If this show is of any use to you, it would help me massively if you would take the time to leave me a review on iTunes.
