But when she is diagnosed with breast cancer she is forced to start addressing her past, a life she hasn't told Claire or anyone about, a New York life, Emily's life; a mess of a failed marriage, an affair and an accidental pregnancy that saw Emily fake her death post-9/11 and run away to LA. Bought & Sold: Scotland, Jamaica and Slavery (Luath Press, 2022) by Kate Phillips traces the story of how and why thousands of Scots made money from buying and selling humans... a story we need to own. We need to admit that many Scots were enthusiastic participants in slavery. Union with England gave Scotland access to both trade and settlement in Jamaica, Britain's richest colony and its major slave trading hub. Tens of thousands from Scotland lived and worked there. The abolition campaign and slave revolts threatened Scottish plantation owners, merchants, traders, bankers and insurance brokers who made their fortunes from slave-farmed sugar in Jamaica and fought hard to preserve the system of slavery. Archives and parliamentary papers in both countries reveal these transatlantic Scots in their own words and allow us to access the lives of their captives. Scotland and Jamaica were closely entwined for over one hundred years. Bought & Sold traces this shared story from its early beginnings in the 1700s to the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and reflects on the meaning of those years for both nations today. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. The family and friends of six-year-old Jackson Donovan, who was tragically killed in a horror crash in Rockingham on Friday, have created a GoFundMe page to support the devastated parents during this “unfathomable time.” The primary school student's mum Klara Donovan had just picked up her little boy, who was the “most hilarious, smart, sweet, kid,” from school with his younger sister Rosie, when the tragedy unfolded on Friday afternoon in East Rockingham. The family were caught up in a four-vehicle pile-up when a 64-year-old driver — who is believed to have suffered from a medical episode — rear-ended the family's black Kia slamming them into the back of a Transperth bus. Another vehicle then crashed into the wreckage. The crash was so severe the six-year-old was airlifted to Perth Children's Hospital. After a gruelling two days, little Jackson lost his fight for life after his parents made the heart-wrenching decision to turn off his life support on Sunday. A friend of the family has created a fundraiser for the grieving couple to cover the boy's funeral costs and “loss of work” as a result of the crash. The West Online's Kate Phillips has the details. In today's episode, Kate shares the story of the birth of her second son Jude. Kate had planned a VBAC for Jude's birth after having an emergency caesarean after a long posterior labour with her first child Archie.  Kate discusses the challenges in falling pregnant a second time around and suffering a miscarriage. She sought help on an acupuncturist and decided to go through the private hospital system at Frances Perry House Instead of going through midwifery care at the Royal Women's.

Kate Phillips, gorgeous star of The Crown, Wolf Hall, War & Peace and Peaky Blinders, joins Sam on this week's show. Conversation flowed from on set mishaps to appropriate chocolate storage techniques, Kate’s sporting achievements to the shape of Tudor sewing needles. Kate wrote a fantastic poem, which Samantha followed with a few verses on the recent Toblerone re-szing scandal. The show ended with Sam and Kate giving away some important spoilers about The Crown and where the Netflix series is headed next! @samanthabaines @katejphillips
