On this episode of Sapo Studios Scratch Track Saturdays, the Sapo gang sits down with Adam Kantor! Adam and Bingus have known each other since they were tadpoles, so this was a really fun one (mostly because Bingus knows where all the bodies are buried). Hop in for some laughs!

We started off with a cold opener from the one and only Adam Kantor. My man slung some jokes, and then I was blessed to have my writing partner/writer of the next GDP movie, Cillian Dunne on the podcast. He has an interesting perspective as a young writer who's hustling to break into the industry. Enjoy, and oh yeah the MINI ZOOVIE IN THE HILLS is on August 26th 2022. Adam Kantor left the Navy JAG Corps after 7 years back in 2005, a decision which he describes as one of the hardest adult decisions of his life. In this episode, Adam tells us how a recommendation from a friend to talk to an attorney in Tampa, Florida, put him in the position of making a career change, how his seven years of active-duty service prepared him for his civilian law practice and offers words of encouragement to those who are facing the decision to separate or retire. Adam's LinkedIn profile can be found at https://www.linkedin.com/in/adam-kantor-b533715a/. A couple side notes. First, I had never interacted with Adam until our conversation on July 1, 2022, but the podcast you will hear is largely unedited. The point is that despite our lack of familiarity, it was like we had known each other for years. This is a common and unique phenomenon among military veterans that is a huge advantage when it comes to networking. Everyone tells you that, but, as I listened to our conversation two weeks later, I was struck by how easy it was for us to immediately strike up a conversation. In fact, Adam introduced me to someone in his network as I pursue my own career progression plans. Second, this summer has been a very busy travel season for me (this is the third Saturday in a row that I am on the road). Accordingly, I apologize to both guests and audience for not putting in the same amount of time to edit these podcasts.
RENT COMPOSER: Jonathan Larson LYRICIST: Jonathan Larson BOOK: Jonathan Larson SOURCE: La Boheme by Giacomo Puccini (1896) DIRECTOR: Michael Greif CHOREOGRAPHER: Marlies Yearby PRINCIPLE CAST: Adam Pascal (Roger), Anthony Rapp (Mark), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Mimi) OPENING DATE: Apr 29, 1996 CLOSING DATE: Sep 07, 2008 PERFORMANCES: 5,123 SYNOPSIS: Mark and Roger are two bohemian artists living in New York's lower East Side at the height of the AIDS epidemic. Mark is a documentary filmmaker and Roger is an HIV positive songwriter. When Roger meets Mimi, a drug addict, he falls madly in love but is unsure if he should tell her of his impending mortality. Composer Jonathon Larson set out to bring musical theatre to a new generation with Rent, a rock opera based on Puccini's La Boheme and set in Lower Manhattan's East Village. The musical helped break taboos and stigma around queerness, trans liberation, and AIDs. Jordan Dragutsky chronicles Larson's quest for giving his generation a voice that sounded like the popular music of the time with the sophistication of musical theatre composition, the advocacy of Rent by New York Theatre Works, the unique casting and design process that was helmed by director Michael Greif, and how the unexpected death of Larson catapulted Rent, and its stars, to global popularity. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jordan Dragutsky grew up surrounded by the entertainment industry and relocated to New York in 2010 after graduating from UCIrvine (BA Drama/Minor Queer Studies). Jordan has assisted in press offices and production/merchandising for over 30 Broadway, Off-Broadway, dance, and touring productions including: Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, Hair, Wicked, and Book of Mormon. He joined the administrative staff at the New York Film Academy in 2012, and from 2015-2020 he served as Senior Dept. Coordinator for the Musical Theatre department. Jordan is a proud member of SAG/AFTRA with experience working on over 100 TV/Film sets. Adam Kantor is currently starring in the new musical DARLING GRENADINE which just opened off-Broadway. You may know him from his turns in Broadway’s A BAND’S VISIT, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, RENT and NEXT TO NORMAL. Follow him on social at @adamjkantor. Hosted by Ryan Lee Gilbert, Andy Lefkowitz and Caitlin Moynihan
Adam Kantor, the Broadway actor known for his roles in Rent, Avenue Q, The Last Five Years, Fiddler on the Roof, and The Band’s Visit spends his time offstage tending to his other passions – food, travel, and community service. Throughout his career, Adam’s dedication to philanthropy and activism have been central and constant. Adam was a founder of Broadway in South Africa, an initiative that brought performers to South African townships to offer students resources in music and education. More recently, he co-founded StoryCourse, a curated dining program that advocates for storytelling through cooking, with an emphasis on immigrant and LGBTQ chefs. Adam’s core idea is the question, “How does food tell a story?” And his core mission is finding a delicious, clever way to make the marginalized feel seen. How do you document real life, when real life’s getting more like fiction each day? Good question. Hello listener, there’s no day but today, so the Broadway Babies decided to switch it up on y’all and add an outlier to the MEGA musical season that they felt deserved to be recognized for being the angsty sensation that swept the nation: RENT RENT RENT RE-ENT RENT!!!! Hang out with Alex and Daisha in Alphabet City while they discuss why Rent deserves a MEGA MUSICAL STATUS, as well as their opinions on why Rent hasn’t aged well, but the source material, La Bohème, has. Let us know what you think in the comments! Podcast cover art: David Taylor Twitter: @bwaybabies Facebook: Facebook.com/broadwaybabiespodcast OBC Cast recording (sorry): Amazon |iTunes Video recording: iTunes | Amazon Songs: “Rent,” performed by Adam Kantor, Will Chase and ensemble “Light My Candle,” by Renée Elise Goldsberry and Will Chase “Take Me or Leave Me,” by Eden Espinosa and Tracie Thoms “I’ll Cover U (reprise),” by Michael McElroy and ensemble “Seasons of Love,” by Gwen Stewart and ensemble Music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson Distributed by Sony Pictures Show Notes: Everyone has AIDS! AIDS AIDS AIDS AIDS! Gavin Creel and Aaron Tveit’s “Take Me or Leave Me,” maybe the sexiest thing ever seen: "When it comes to 1990s time capsules, though, you can't do much better than Rent. Sure, it was technically set in 1989, but the musical is far more about the decade's response to the '80s than anything else." This is horrifying. News stories from 1982-1992 about HIV/AIDS. People were horribly mistreated. The Final Days backstage. It's Rent, but the opera version! (Also, we encourage y'all to go see La Bohème live! It's ALWAYS being performed and probably at an opera house near you!)
Before formally graduating from Northwestern University in 2008, Adam Kantor traded Chicago for Broadway, closing out the final months of RENT as Mark. A native of Great Neck, New York, Kantor has also been seen on Broadway in Next to Normal and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as off Broadway in The Last Five Years and Avenue Q. He’s currently starring as Telephone Guy in The Band’s Visit, and that’s what we’re chatting about today.Hosts: Ryan Lee Gilbert, Paul Wontorek, Eric King
We're SO thrilled to welcome Adam Kantor back to the podcast! When we last chatted with Adam, he was mid-run as Motel in the 2015 Broadway revival of "Fiddler on the Roof." Adam is now back on Broadway as Telephone Guy in "The Band's Visit," one of the most critically acclaimed new musicals of the year. For the episode, we chat about how Adam won the roll, working with creative team (including one of our personal favorites, David Yazbeck) on creating the role, and perfecting his character's haunting and beautiful song "Answer Me."
Adam Kantor is on Broadway most days, in shows like Fiddler on the Roof and The Band's Visit. In 2017 with Brian Bordainick he created Story Course. With Story Course, they create uniquely moving and delicious experiences by taking guests on a coursed dinner that pairs with stories. It's storytelling and fine dining mixed to tell the story of an immigrant chef through food and words. Their first event "How Do You Hug A Tiger? with Chef Jae Jung" started in 2017 and continues in February. Check out www.storycoursenyc.com for tickets and use code "EATYOURSTORY" for a discount! OK fellow Theater People, you've been asking for this interview for almost as long as the podcast has existed, so we are THRILLED to be bringing you this episode featuring the fabulous Adam Kantor!Adam made his Broadway debut in 2008 as Marc in the closing Broadway company of 'Rent' (grab your tissues when he tells the story of how he learned he'd won the roll) and he went on to replace in the role of Henry in the hit Broadway production of 'Next to Normal.' In 2013, he was cast as Jamie opposite Betsy Wolfe in Second Stage's highly anticipated revival of Jason Robert Brown's 'The Last Five Years.' This season he's back on Broadway in the role of Motel in the Bartlett Sher helmed production of 'Fiddler on the Roof.' We had such a great time chatting in his dressing room surrounded by old family photos and heirlooms that are so meaningful to him--especially as they relate to his work in 'Fiddler,' we'll let him explain that further. Enjoy!

About our Interview with This week we chat with Adam Kantor who is currently in previews of Fiddler On The Roof, playing the role of Motel. Adam talks about the challenges of finding his way in creating a role for an original Broadway revival. He also discusses traveling to Eastern Europe as both a personal journey as well as preparation for bringing more honesty to his portrayal of Motel. We also discuss reminding yourself that “You are enough,” even at times when you don’t feel that way. Adam offers a great example of this during his disastrous put-in rehearsal for his Broadway debut in Rent, when Michael Greif pulled him aside at intermission with some words of encouragement. Adam also discusses the role of mentors on his life, not being above an open call, and how it is good to be, “Always learning, always growing, always getting outside of yourself.” Links to learn more Fiddler On The Roof Broadway.com
