Eden Espinosa's performance as Tamara in “Lempicka” garnered her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical…and she's not guilty about it. She highlights both the triumphs and tribulations of her career – from being a part of Colby's Clubhouse and working at Disneyland when she was young to dealing with rejections and criticisms. Maybe best known for her role in “Wicked”, she shares how she got involved with the show (thanks to fellow Disney performer Stephanie J. Block) and why chose to be a standby over understudy. She delves into her recent role in the musical "Lempicka", how she auditioned for the part, and why ever since then, she made sure it was in her contract that if she had to be replaced, they'd have to pay her. She opens up about the challenges faced by the production, including dealing with its unexpected closing. She reflects on the importance of authentic representation, particularly in portraying queer characters, and the responsibility she feels to honor such roles. Eden shares a memorable interaction with an audience member during the show's final performance, where she broke character to address a disruptive phone use incident. Despite the show's sudden closing, Eden's motivation to connect with others in any way, shape, or form is definitely not going anywhere. Eden Espinosa made her Broadway debut in 2003 in the original cast of “Wicked” as the Elphaba standby and Nessarose understudy. She also garnered critical acclaim playing Elphaba full-time in the sit-down productions in Los Angeles and San Francisco. She originated the lead role in the show “Brooklyn” in 2004, before going on to the closing company of “Rent” as Maureen in 2008. She graced the screen with roles in shows like “Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure”, and “Alice's Wonderland Bakery” for which she earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Queen of Hearts in 2022. She has two complete solo albums to her name, “Look Around” and “Revelation”, and most recently, her performance in the world premiere of “Lempicka” garnered her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. Katie Adams is a musical theatre star who has gotten to be in some of the most popular shows to date. Adams got the chance to join the National Tour of Grease where she played Marty. Growing up, Grease was one of her all time favorite films to watch, and she hoped that one day she would be able to bring the beloved story to life, and she did just that. Getting to recite some of Marty's iconic lines was something that has been one of the highlights of her career. Additionally, Adams got to participate in both the national tour and Broadway companies of Wicked. While on tour she was in the ensemble, and understudied the role of Glinda. (She toured with Stephanie J. Block and Sebastian Arcelus; musical theatre nerds, you KNOW how magical watching those two on stage are) Then after a year on the road, Adams joined the Broadway company of the hit musical as the Glinda standby. In fact one of her Elphaba's in NYC was Eden Espinosa (featured on season 2). Besides these two musical hits, Adams was also featured in Urinetown where she potrayed Soupy Sue. Now, Adams is part of the musical theatre faculty at AMDA where she is currently teaching the next generation of Broadway household names. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support

Kimmy Immanuel is a musical theatre performer. She began her experience with touring when she joined the company of the national tour of White Christmas. Each day she was on stage she got to spread Christmas spirit to her audiences all over the country. After the COVID shutdown, Immanuel got the chance to hit the road with the first national tour of Hadestown as an original cast member. This time around she was a swing and a dance captain, and was lucky enough to perform at least once in almost every city that the show went through. Now, Immanuel is in Oz for the first time on the national tour of Wicked where she is playing Nessarose. Wicked has always been a show that has been near and dear to her heart. In fact, when she saw the show on Broadway, her first Elphaba was Dee Roscioli (featured in Season 1). At the start of her experience with Wicked, she got the thrill of a life time to meet the ICON herself, Stephanie J. Block and her family. If it weren't for Block, there would be no Wicked tour so it was a pretty special moment for her and the rest of the cast. Lastly. Immanuel is an alumni of NYU where she studying musical theatre and one of her favorite professors from college was Eden Espinosa (featured in season 2). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support

Eden Espinosa has had a magical career in the world of musical theater. She made her broadway debut in Wicked, playing Nessarose and she was the stand by for the OG Elphaba herself, Idina Menzel. Eventually, the role of the green girl became hers a few years later. Espinosa was the original Brooklyn in Brooklyn the Musical where she played her very first title role. Eden made one of her absolute dreams come true when she was casted as Maureen in the closing cast of Rent on Broadway. Additionally, some of the other projects Espinosa has completed include traveling the country as Trina in the Falsettos tour with former podcast guest, Audrey Cardwell. Prior to the pandemic, Eden played one of three narrators in a concert version of the iconic musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat alongside musical theater superstars Jessica Vosk and Alex Newell. AFECT was formed in June 2020 by Karen Olivo and Eden Espinosa on the heels of continued violence and injustice against Black, Indigenous People of Color. Conversations were started in response to the racism that is prevalent in the American theater and it came to light that prominent Broadway names had repeatedly contributed to political candidates and movements that directly contradict the ideals of many artists in the industry. Armed with this knowledge, Olivo and Espinosa vowed to withhold their artistic services from “any theatre, company, or persons who would knowingly fund organizations that perpetuate inequality”.

Sure, it was technically set in 1989, but the musical is far more about the decade's response to the '80s than anything else." This is horrifying. News stories from 1982-1992 about HIV/AIDS. People were horribly mistreated.  The Final Days backstage. It's Rent, but the opera version! (Also, we encourage y'all to go see La Bohème live!
