It's time to go back to the summer of 1997 with the British comedy and Dave's pick for the week, The Full Monty. Directed by Peter Cattaneo and written by Simon Beaufoy, the film was shot on a tight budget of £3.5 million in Sheffield, England, the industrial city where the story is set. The choice of location was pivotal, as it allowed the filmmakers to authentically depict the struggles of a working-class community hit hard by economic decline. The production team used local landmarks and worked with real residents to add an extra layer of realism to the film. Despite financial constraints, the crew maximized resources, crafting a story that was both intimate and universal. Casting played a crucial role in bringing the film to life, with Robert Carlyle leading the ensemble as Gaz. Many of the actors were lesser-known at the time, which lent authenticity to their portrayals of everyday men grappling with unemployment and self-doubt. The iconic final striptease scene was a nerve-wracking challenge for the cast, as it required them to overcome their own anxieties to deliver a pivotal, uplifting moment. Set to a soundtrack of classic tunes like Hot Chocolate's You Sexy Thing and Tom Jones's You Can Leave Your Hat On, the film captured a perfect blend of humor and pathos. To the surprise of its creators, The Full Monty became a sleeper hit, earning over $250 million worldwide and multiple awards, including an Oscar for Beaufoy's screenplay. They hatch a bold plan to perform a one-night-only striptease act to earn quick cash. Led by the charming but down-on-his-luck Gaz, the ragtag group includes his best friend Dave, who battles body image issues, and Gerald, their former boss hiding his own unemployment. As they awkwardly rehearse their routine, the men bond over their shared struggles, discovering newfound confidence and camaraderie. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

Marc talks about performing the various dance numbers, working opposite male lead Chad Michael Murray, getting in shape for the role and what it's like to work for Netflix generally. He also talks about Man On the Inside and whether or not he felt pressure to be funny, giving that the show was created by Mike Shur of The Good Place and Parks and Recreation fame. Marc also recalls falling in love with acting at the age of five when he saw his father performing in a Chicago stage production of Fiddler on the Roof and how he experienced a full circle moment decades later when his dad got to see him act on stage in Miss Evers Boys in Portland. Other topics include: getting discovered by his commercial agent at the Mexican restaurant Marix in West Hollywood, how Hollywood has evolved in terms of its depictions of gay and black characters, how he's managed to stay positive and ride the ups and downs of the business, his long-time recurring role as Felix LaCroix on General Hospital, why he lives in the mountains instead of in LA proper and why he compares one very specific aspect of his acting career to holding in a fart.

(Hint: Definitely not.) Along the way we discover that Dave is running out of ways to open the show. (shocking?) From there we dive right into why Americans LOVE ghost stories so much. (We love to believe in things that don't exist, like trickle down economics!) We examine how Spiritualism made believing in ghosts so popular that even the First Lady could do it.  Then we ask the hard questions about Ghost Lincoln. In her new cookbook, Maydān: Recipes from Lebanon and Beyond, Rose Previte writes about what it's like to be a women restauranteur in a male-dominated industry, and what it was like to grow up in rural Ohio in a Sicilian-Lebanese household. She shares her mother's staple recipes and dishes she learned from other women from around the world. Also, we remember Full Monty actor Tom Wilkinson, who died on last week at the age of 75.

Hillary is traveling, and will be back next week with a new episode. In the meantime, we're bringing back one of her favorites..   “Believe in yourself.” For some people, that's a lifelong challenge. Then there are those rare folks, immensely talented and hard working, who always knew that they would be somebody. This week, Hillary talks with two of them—multiple Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile, and Broadway legend André De Shields—about the dreams (and setbacks) that led to where they are today.   Brandi Carlile is a six-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, performer, and producer. Since her debut in 2004, she has released six studio albums and was the most nominated female artist at the 2019 Grammy Awards with six nominations, including Album, Record, and Song of the Year. Her memoir Broken Horses is a #1 New York Times bestseller.   André De Shields' acting career spans over 50 years. While currently best known for his performance in the musical Hadestown, he also appeared in The Wiz, Play On!, Ain't Misbehavin', and The Full Monty, and has directed and choreographed several shows and appeared on film and television. André has won numerous awards throughout this career, including an Emmy Award, a Tony Award, and a Grammy Award.   You can find a full transcript here.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
