Episode 140 - Books for Dads - The Most Human, Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy by Adam NimoyAdam was born during the Eisenhower administration to Leonard and Sandra Zoberblatt Nimoy. He attended the University Elementary School, a “lab school” run by UCLA, where he was subjected to numerous psychological experiments. The experimentation continued at UC Berkeley in the form of mind-altering substances from which he may, or may not, have fully recovered. In a state of absolute certainty, Adam attended Loyola Law School. He was wrong. After seven years of practicing entertainment law and one moment of clarity, Adam left his life as an attorney to follow his passion of making films. After directing forty-five hours of network television, some of it sublime, some of it eminently unwatchable, Adam's career plummeted due in large part to drug and alcohol addiction. On January 1, 2004, Adam entered 12-Step recovery hoping to achieve an attitude adjustment. This was a New Year's resolution he knew he had to keep. For 8 years, he taught writing, directing and acting at the New York Film Academy and taught filmmaking at Beit T'Shuvah, an addiction treatment center where the residents kept him on the straight and narrow.Book: The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy"Engaging and immensely relatable, while at the same time offering deeply profound insights into Adam Nimoy's personal relationships, particularly with his famous father." — Eugene Roddenberry Jr., CEO Roddenberry Entertainment Living with Dad was like living with a stranger— as a kid I often had trouble connecting and relating to him. But I was always proud of him. Even before Star Trek I'd see him popping up in bit roles on some of my favorite TV shows like Get Smart, Sea Hunt, and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. And then one night he brought home Polaroids of himself in makeup and wardrobe for a pilot he was working on. It was December 1964 and nobody had heard of Star Trek. Still, the eight-year-old me had watched enough Outer Limits and My Favorite Martian to understand exactly what I was looking at. Spock's popularity happened quickly, and soon the fan magazines were writing about dad's personal life, characterizing us as a "close family." But the awkwardness that defined our early relationship blossomed into conflict, sometimes smoldering, sometimes open and intense. There were occasional flashes of warmth between the arguments and hurt feelings— even something akin to love— especially when we were celebrating my father's many successes. The rest of the time, things between us were often strained. My resentment towards my father kept building through the years. I wasn't blameless, I know that now, but my bitterness blinded me to any thought of my own contribution to the problem. I wanted things to be different for my children. I wanted to be the father I never had, so I coached Maddy's soccer, drove Jonah to music lessons, helped them with their homework— all the things dads are supposed to do. All the things I wanted to do. So what if my Dad and I had been estranged for years? I was living one day at a time. And then I got his letter. That marked a turning point in our lives, a moment that cleared the way for a new relationship between us.Amazon link: https://amzn.to/3KvTi1shttps://adamnimoy.com/___https://dadspace.camusic provided by Blue Dot SessionsSong: The Big Ten

About Adam Nimoy Adam Nimoy is a graduate of UC Berkeley and Loyola Law School. After seven years in entertainment law, he left to pursue a directing career. Nimoy has directed over forty-five hours of network television as well as the critically acclaimed documentary about his father, For The Love Of Spock (2016) an official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival. He has taught filmmaking at the New York Film Academy and Beit T'Shuvah, a residential addiction treatment center. About "The Most Human" While the tabloids and fan publications portrayed the Nimoys as a “close family,” to his son Adam, Leonard Nimoy was a total stranger. The actor was as inscrutable as the iconic half-Vulcan science officer he portrayed on Star Trek, even to those close to him. Now, his son's poignant memoir explores their complicated relationship and how it informed his views on marriage, parenting, and later, sobriety. Despite their differences, both men ventured down parallel paths: marriages leading to divorce, battling addiction, and finding recovery. Most notably, both men struggled to take the ninth step in their AA journey: to make amends with each other. Discover how the son of Spock learned to navigate this tumultuous relationship—from Shabbat dinners to basement AA meetings—and how he was finally able to reconcile with his father—and with himself. _______________________________________________________________ One easy way to support this show is to rate and review Read Between the Lines wherever you listen to our podcast. Television director, filmmaker and author Adam Nimoy, the son of actor Leonard Nimoy, knows what it means to grow up in the chilling shadow of a famous father. He also knows what it means to tell a helluva story, and he does so in the pages of his new memoir The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy. The book explores the author's complicated relationship with his father and reflects on how it informed his views on marriage, parenting, addiction and recovery. A graduate of Loyola Law School, Adam Nimoy started his career working in entertainment law, before becoming a filmmaker, ultimately directing dozens of network television shows—some of them, he allows with self-deprecating good cheer, “sublime”, and some of them “eminently unwatchable.” He also directed the documentary “For the Love of Spock,” which was originally conceived as a collaborative venture with his father shortly before the actor's death in 2015. Adam also taught writing, directing and acting at the New York Film Academy, and filmmaking at Beit T'Shuvah, an addiction treatment center. “Whether you're a Leonard Nimoy fan, a Trekkie, or from another planet,” writes noted rabbi and social justice advocate Shmuly Yanklowitz, “you are sure to find this vulnerable, brave, humorous, and intimate story about Spock, the outer limits, a father-son relationship, and teshuvah (recovery and repair) deeply moving.” Learn more about Adam Nimoy: Website Instagram Twitter Please support the sponsors who support our show: Ritani Jewelers Chelsea Devantez's I Shouldn't Be Telling You This Daniel Paisner's Balloon Dog Daniel Paisner's SHOW: The Making and Unmaking of a Network Television Pilot Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall by Lindsey Jacobellis Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Libro.fm (ASTOLDTO) | 2 audiobooks for the price of 1 when you start your membership Film Freaks Forever! podcast, hosted by Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton Everyday Shakespeare podcast A Mighty Blaze podcast The Writer's Bone Podcast Network Misfits Market (WRITERSBONE) | $15 off your first order Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Wizard Pins (WRITERSBONE) | 20% discount

Episode 393 - Adam Nimoy - The Most Human, Reconciling with My Father, Leonard NimoyAdam was born during the Eisenhower administration to Leonard and Sandra Zoberblatt Nimoy. That marked a turning point in our lives, a moment that cleared the way for a new relationship between us.Amazon link: https://amzn.to/3KvTi1shttps://adamnimoy.com/Send us a Text Message.Support the Show.___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

I'm a word nerd. I took linguistics courses toward my bachelor's degree and I've been a professional writer for more than 30 years. Words matter to me. And recently I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the language and words we use around death, loss and grief, particularly when we're talking about our companion animals. So I brought back my fellow word nerd and friend of the pod, Beth Bigler, for her third appearance. Beth, who has become so well known for her Instagram account, @honoringouranimals, is a certified pet loss grief counselor and pet chaplain. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in arts and has over 20 years of experience in film, including in writing. Heck, she's even an instructor at New York Film Academy in their screenwriting and producing departments. Beth even uses writing in her counseling, helping her grief clients navigate their journey of love and loss with their pets through the power of story. What to listen for Some of our terminologies with pet loss grief are old-fashioned Our beliefs about death influence the way we talk about it The challenges of language when discussing death Our words can create moments of self-compassion and self-loathing Why we hate the terms "pet loss grief" and "end of life pet photography" Where to find Beth HonoringOurAnimals.com Instagram The Art of Finding the Right Support The Art of Chasing Rainbows --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onelastnetwork/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/onelastnetwork/support
Building Moo-Mentum (A very unofficial How to Dance in Ohio Podcast) but again...Not the real one
Ep. 11: Conor Tague (Tommy) How to Dance in Ohio Broadway Musical My name is Conor Tague. I am an actor / singer and former student of the Professional Conservatory of Musical Theatre at New York Film Academy. I am also a person on the autism spectrum, diagnosed at a young age; however, this does not inhibit me in any way... It actually encourages me to work harder doing the thing that I love. I pick things up very quickly, I retain information, and I'm not afraid to commit fully to any character or circumstance. I have also been part of an original musical that has been in workshops and had a World Premiere at Syracuse Stage titled How To Dance In Ohio, based on the award winning documentary of the same name by Alexandra Shiva, where I originated the role of Tommy and will be reprising my role on Broadway this fall at the Belasco Theatre. Some things I enjoy doing are puppetry, impressions/character voices, I also create memes to post on my Instagram and TikTok, and I can quote a multitude of movies... just off the top of my head. Hope we get to work together soon! :) https://www.conortague.com/ About our How to Dance in Ohio Podcast Building Moo-Mentum is a very, very unofficial podcast about the Broadway Musical "How to Dance in Ohio". Today I talked to Katherine Vaz about her new novel Above the Salt (Flatiron Books, 2023). In 1843-1846, on the Portuguese island of Madeira, five-year-old John Alves lived in jail and starved alongside his heretic mother, who was condemned to death for converting to Protestantism from Catholicism. Finally freed, John befriends young Mary Freitas, the adopted daughter of a wonderful botanist. Both families are forced to flee, and they end up in southern Illinois. John teaches signing to deaf children and Mary works as a gardener for a wealthy man who falls in love with her. She's torn after she and John find each other again, but he's off to fight in the Civil War. A mean-spirited trick keeps them away from each other and Mary accepts her boss's marriage proposal. This is a rich and detailed love story based on the Portuguese community of Jacksonville, Illinois, historical characters, events, and flower cultivation, a courtship that took place in the home of rising politician Abraham Lincoln, and a sweeping view of 19th and early 20th century America. Katherine Vaz is an award-winning author, a Briggs-Copeland Fellow in Fiction at Harvard University (2003-09), and a Fellow of the Radcliffe Institute (2006-7). Her novels include SAUDADE, (St. Martin's Press), was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, and Marlee Matlin (Solo One Productions) optioned it. Her novel MARIANA has been printed in six languages and is currently optioned by Anne Harrison, with screenwriter Sandy Welch. Her collection FADO & OTHER STORIES won the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, and two of the stories won her a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. OUR LADY OF THE ARTICHOKES won the Prairie Schooner Book Prize, and the title story was the springboard for a one-page film idea that was one of eight national winners in the 2014 “Write Start” contest co-sponsored by the New York Film Academy. ABOUT DAMON DIMARCO AND TOWER STORIES Anyone old enough to remember can tell you where they were and what they were doing the morning of September 11, 2001 , when two airplanes were flown into the Twin Towers of New York City's World Trade Center. While preserving the stories in the original edition of the people who were in New York City on that fateful day and in the days and months that followed, Damon DiMarco's Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11 offers additional interviews that provide a contemporary perspective on the tragedy. "Never forget" has become part of our lexicon in remembering the tragedy of 9/11. But why do we remember? According to Alice Greenwald, President and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, who was interviewed for the new edition, ".remembrance is essential to moral conscience.(to) determine what's right and what's wrong. and to ask ourselves what we are capable of as human beings, both at our worst and at our best." While confronting unfathomable loss, the individuals featured in the book speak to the myriad ways by which Americans rose to meet the challenges presented by 9/11and its aftermath, honoring the many heroes that are found within its pages. Some of the stories preserved from earlier editions feature the small group of people who miraculously made it safely down from the 89th floor of Tower 1; the New York Times reporter who desperately fought her way through the fleeing crowds to get back into Lower Manhattan; the paramedic who set up a triage area 200 yards from the base of the Towers before they collapsed; and the bereaved citizens of New York City who struggled to get on with their lives in the days and months following the tragic event among dozens of others. MSNBC said Tower Stories was "arguably the most successful attempt at capturing the enormity of the events of 9/11. Damon DiMarco's sprawling oral history (presents) human stories.with a raw candor a thousand times more affecting than any cold statistic offered by a commission.a riveting and disarmingly emotional read." This best-selling and critically acclaimed book on 9/11continues in the tradition of Studs Terkel, encapsulating a wide variety of viewpoints from everyday citizens. DiMarco's literary time capsule offers new insights that benefit from twenty years of reflection on the world-shattering event, capturing the voices of individuals such as: . Reverend Jim Martin, New York Times bestselling author and Jesuit priest: "Your interior life, your sense of right and wrong, can guide you. But very often, we don't pay attention. We can't forget how parts of our society were impelled to help. But then other parts were like, 'We're gonna show them.' . Tom Haddad, survivor of the 89th floor, Tower 1: "After 9/11, there was common cause. It was really inspiring. And then . . . it faded.". Stephen Adly Guirgis Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright based in NY: "Still there's a part of me that misses the old days. Like, when you interacted with people in the street, you did it through the filter of We Live in New York." . Glenn Guzi, Program Director at Port Authority of NY & NJ: "I don't mind telling you there were days when I thought, 'I don't know how we're going to do this.' The story of rebuilding downtown is a story of cooperation. we saw the power and beauty of humanity when good people come together." Their stories, along with those preserved from the original edition of Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11, not only reconnect readers to what was lost on 9/11, but also to what can still be gained by remembering. DiMarco says, "Originally, the Tower Stories project sprang from the disturbing notion that the memory of September 11might someday fade from the world consciousness. Two decades later I find myself less concerned over what we forget and more intrigued by what we remember and why. Tower Stories: An Oral History of 9/11 is to remind us of the humanity and unity we are capable of as a country, as citizens and as people." ABOUT DAMON DIMARCO Damon DiMarco is the author of The Brown Agenda (with Richard Fuller), Heart of War: Soldiers' Voices from the Front Lines in Iraq, and My Two Chinas: The Memoir of a Chinese Counter-Revolutionary (with Baiqiao Tang), as well as The Actor's Art & Craft and The Actor's Guide to Creating a Character (both with William Esper). DiMarco has been a guest on national television and radio, including FOX, CNN, The National Geographic Channel, and the Premiere Radio Network. He has been a guest speaker at colleges, universities, and community groups across the country. A professional actor as well as a writer, Damon has appeared in primetime and daytime television programs on CBS, ABC, and NBC; commercials; independent films; regional theatres; and trade shows. He has written for the stage, television, and screen, and taught acting on the faculties of Drew University in Madison, New Jersey and the New York Film Academy in Manhattan. He teaches writing to PhD students in the History and Culture program at Drew University's Caspersen School of Graduate Studies. REVEREND JAMES MARTIN REFLECTS ON THE GRACE HE SAW ON THE PILE AFTER 9/11(FROM TOWER STORIES) In those first few days at 9/11, do you remember all the talk about missing people? Posters of the missing went up all over the city. Of course - again - there were no survivors. But we didn't know that then. There was an article in the paper that said if you're a family member and you're looking for someone, you could check lists from all the hospitals. And there was a center set up at the New School, at one of their buildings. On 12th Street, I think it was. I went down there to help people, to counsel them. But there wasn't a lot to do. The next day, I went back to Chelsea Piers. I was still looking for a way to contribute. And this is where the ministry kind of started. A police cruiser came up to me. The police officer leaned out and said, "Do you want to go down there?" I was wearing my Roman collar, so I was easy to recognize. I said yes. "Get in," he said. I'll never forget it. We drove from Chelsea Piers. I was in the backseat with a psychiatrist. I think the police officer had just sort of picked him up, too. We drove further and further south. That's when I started to see how things were. See, if you were in Manhattan . . . say, near the 40s and 50s . . . you couldn't really tell something was wrong. I mean, sure, there was less traffic. And there was the smell. Other than that, though, things seemed pretty normal. But then we kept driving down past 14th Street. And you started to see, like . . . ash. We kept going south, and I saw fires burning all over the place. This was on September 13. We pulled right up to the site. I got out. The psychiatrist said, "Good luck." The car drove away. I was by myself at the Pile. It was really overwhelming, like a scene from a war movie. Terrifying. The scale of it. These huge jagged remains of the building. And it was still on fire, still smoking. Other buildings nearby were still burning, too. And the smell was . . . well. You knew you were standing next to a grave.I saw hundreds of uniformed personnel from every possible agency. Like an alphabet soup of initials: OSHA and CIA and FBI and army people. Policemen and firemen. This was before any sort of order had been imposed on the place. In a few weeks or a few days, maybe, there would be fences. But I just walked right in. Back then, even the term "Ground Zero" was new. I remember looking around and wondering what I could possibly do. And here I thank my Jesuit training. Because, I thought, I cannot work in the morgue. I just didn't think I was capable of doing that. But I thought that at least I could minister to the rescue workers. So that's what I started to do.When I say minister, I mean trying to help them. You listen to them. "How are you?" That sort of thing. Most of this is what we call a ministry of presence. In the same way as if you were a firehouse chaplain or a police chaplain, you help people to find God where they are. To know God's present among them. But you know what was funny? The people I met were more solicitous of me. I kept hearing, "How are you doing, Father? Are you okay? Is this difficult for you?" It was so generous. Everyone I saw was so other-directed. Other-centered. This was evidenced by their already being down there. I found it very moving. So that's what I did for a couple of weeks. I was walking around, ministering, helping people. By that point, we knew there were no survivors. It was just rescue workers. Then I brought other Jesuits down and we celebrated Mass there, which was incredible. I wrote about this in my book "Searching for God at Ground Zero." Which, actually has reminiscences that are probably more accurate. Because, you know, it was over 20 years ago. Which I still can't believe. I just can't believe it. My experience of Ground Zero was one where the Holy Spirit was present. It was a place of generosity and love, community and union. Charity, concord, and service. There were all these people working for others. And remember, you had people coming from all over the country. In those early days, anyone would come in. Firefighters, sure, but also . . . there were these women from the Midwest who'd set up a candy stand. I'll never forget that. So while, for many, Ground Zero was a place of Good Friday - the suffering, dying and burial of Christ - I saw a different aspect. I saw it as a place of Easter Sunday. Because there was a sense of new life there. Both these things present at the same site. What do I mean by the term "Holy Spirit?" I mean God's presence. An active presence. And that's important. Because you could say that God's presence is everywhere, the idea that God's spirit pervades the world as a sort of benign presence. But I believe God's Spir
