Last year, Leonard and Jessie got a rare opportunity to interview Frank Oz at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas before a live audience. His alter egos are world-renowned, but Leonard and Jessie didn't focus on Miss Piggy or Yoda in this conversation. The main topic was directing movies, which Oz has done so well for so many years: The Muppets Take Manhattan, Little Shop of Horrors, In & Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and What About Bob? are just a few of his credits. What is the through-line, if any, from puppetry to filmmaking. Listen and hear what the amazing Oz has to say.
Plus: A beautiful Survivor moment, Hitler and the Nazis, Hairspray, Severance, White Lotus, Black Bag not directed by David Soderbergh, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The 3 Amigos, and Adolescence.Check out our Baldwins recaps on the bonus feed: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/hivemindhq/episodes/The-Baldwins-Episode-4-e317krc

Rabbi Dunner explores the timeless allure of greed and duplicity through captivating stories of history's greatest con artists. From Gregor MacGregor's mythical paradise to Sarah Howe's hollow promises and James Reavis's fabricated aristocracy, these tales of audacious fraud echo the Torah's account of Ephron the Hittite in Chayei Sarah. Drawing powerful lessons from Abraham's integrity, Rabbi Dunner reminds us that honesty and enduring values always triumph over fleeting gains.
Sara and I met through my husband (then boyfriend) when they lived together post-college. A beloved classmate of Adam's, we followed Sara's career as she stunningly bounced from National Tour to Broadway to Paper Mill or Nyack or wherever the work brought her, and at every turn she was nothing short of brilliant. Currently starring in the magnificent Broadway production of "Water for Elephants," Sara sat with me between shows to chat about her journey; the ups and downs, heartbreaks and roses. No one can attest more to the nonlinear nature of this business, and I defy you to find someone who's navigated it with more grace, poise, humor or self-awareness than this extraordinary artist. Sara has created roles in the Broadway productions of "Water For Elephants," "Seussical," "Nine" (Broadway revival, replacing Jane Krakowski as Carla), "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels," and tours of "The Addams Family," "Fosse," and "101 Dalmations." Sit back and enjoy one of the most stimulating conversations I've had about this business we call "Show."

Frank Oz (What About Bob?, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) directed this satirical showbiz comedy with a truly unique premise: a now desperate movie producer named Bowfinger is positively set on filming a new movie on the fly with a popular movie star named Kit Ramsey....who doesn't know that he's being filmed. :o Bowfinger is played by Steve Martin who also wrote the screenplay and Kit Ramsey is played by Eddie Murphy.....and since they both performed on Saturday Night Live, this was THE first time these comedic titans would join forces on screen. (And unfortunately the last) Beyond that, Bowfinger also recruits several others to film this stealth movie including an very impressionable young actress played by Heather Graham who just came in from the Midwest and a nerdy assistant named Jif who is ALSO played by Eddie Murphy. Of course other complications ensue including Kit's membership in a local cult lead by Terrance Stamp. Throw in some other random stuff including poodles in heels and Laker girls, and.....hilarity ensues!Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

We were really thrilled to have Tony winner, David Yazbek be our obvious "Y" guest for Billy Joel A to Z this episode. David has composed the Broadway musicals, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Tootsie and The Band's Visit, with which he won the Tony Award for Best Musical of the Year. We have a theme this month! Both of the musicals we're covering this April are powerful examples of "pastiche" in musical theatre. The way the composers of these shows reference styles and works of the past bring depth and context to their stories and characters. First up, the 2004 musical DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, a show as raucous as it is sophisticated! Here to describe it as, "one of the greatest times of her life," is one of the musical's original stars, Sara Gettelfinger (SEUSSICAL, NINE, and currently WATER FOR ELEPHANTS). Sara joins us from backstage at the Imperial Theatre (where she originated the role of oil money heiress, Jolene Oakes) to share her memories of cast bonding and the joys of "not giving a f**k" in comedy. You can currently see Sara at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway in WATER FOR ELEPHANTS. A two-time Tony Award winner for “Best Actor in a Musical” and one of Broadway's legendary leading men. From his humble beginning as the 7th of 11 children to originating roles on Broadway in Jason Robert Browns' The Last Five Years, Stephen Schwartz's Wicked, in Andrew Lippa's Big Fish, in Harry Connick Jr's Thou Shalt Not (Tony nomination) in the Lincoln Center 2018 revival of My Fair Lady (Tony nomination) and his two Tony Winning performances in David Yazbek's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and in Shaiman and Whitman's Catch Me If You Can. In addition to Norbert's signature roles, this versatile hyphenate has 4 solo records. Mr. Butz' television and film credits include Netflix's Bloodline, Fosse/Verdon, Justified: City Primeval, and the soon to be released new series on FX from Ryan Murphy Gladiator: American Sports Story, as well as the recent Exorcist sequel by David Gordon Green.
His alter egos are world-renowned, but Leonard and Jessie didn't focus on Miss Piggy or Yoda in this conversation, recorded in front of a live audience at Esther's Follies in Austin. The main topic was directing movies, which Oz has done so well for so many years: The Muppets Take Manhattan, Little Shop of Horrors, In & Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Bowfinger, and What About Bob? are just a few of his credits. What is the through-line, if any, from puppetry to filmmaking? Listen and hear what the amazing Oz has to say.
This 80's comedy classic is one remake that actually surpassed the original! The plot is simple, two con men with differing styles of grifting make a bet to see who can out-swindle a wealthy heiress on the glamorous French Riviera. From slapstick antics to razor-sharp wit, Steve Martin and Michael Caine deliver a masterclass in comedy as they pull off one hilarious scheme after another, trying to outsmart and out-con one another. So slick back your hair, dust up on your accents, and don't forget to put the corks on your forks as Tim Williams and his guest co-hosts, Bethany Wells, Chris Adams, and Chad Sheppard discuss “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” from 1988 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Michael Caine was quizzed about the most crucial lesson he picked up during his years in the movie business, he reflected on his time filming "Scoundrels." He shared, "If you're working on a comedy and the crew laughs, that's a bad sign. During 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' with Steve Martin, not a single chuckle from the crew. Yet, it turned out to be the funniest film I've ever been a part of." We so often complain that Hollywood has no original ideas, but then we're also forced to concede occasionally that from time to time, the remake actually does a better job of telling the story. We don't enjoy conceding that, but that's the way it goes sometimes. With that in mind, this is the first of two episodes taking a look at films whose remakes surpassed the originals. First one up is The Man Who Knew Too Much, from 1956. This Alfred Hitchcock-directed film leans heavily on weird coincidences to get the story rolling, but you'll feel the tension from the moment the characters do. You may not even hate hearing Doris Day sing what became her signature song. In Part Two we'll jump to 1988 to talk about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support
In Part 2 of our episode, we go to 1988 and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, directed by Frank Oz. It's the second of FOUR different versions of this story: the original from 1964, this version, and then two which involved gender flips. Of the four, this is the best one, so say we. COMING ATTRACTIONS: We continue this remake conceit with another pair of films that worked out better when they were remade. First up, from 1999 it's The Thomas Crown Affair, then we move forward a couple of years to Ocean's Eleven, from 2001. Here in Part Two, we look at the 2016 edition of Loving. This film, which was directed by Jeff Nichols, stars Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton as Mildred and Richard Loving, the real-life couple who turned their relationship into a Federal case. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Our next episode is the first of two in which we examine remakes that surpassed their originals. And we start with The Man Who Knew Too Much, from 1956, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, from 1988. See you soon! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support
A two-time Tony Award-winning actor and singer, Norbert Leo Butz opens up about his childhood, the challenges he faced pursuing a career in acting, and the remarkable twists of fate that brought him to Broadway. Hailing from a large family of 11 siblings, he shares how the importance of education was instilled to them by his parents. Despite his family's support for school plays, his strict upbringing and limited resources led Norbert to sneakily pursue his love for acting. Norbert eventually had to confess to his father about attending a different college and studying to become an actor, a moment that ultimately led to his parents becoming his biggest supporters. He recounts his serendipitous entry into Broadway with "Rent," joining the cast as a cover for the roles of Roger and Mark–a right place, right time moment for him. He also talks about how he dealt with the pandemic through music, which eventually resulted in releasing his 4th solo album “King of Hearts” co-written with her daughter, Clara Davis. Growing up, Norbert developed a sense of self-reliance and resilience that shaped his approach to hard work and dedication. He encourages aspiring actors to avoid seeking validation through advice and instead cultivate self-awareness and a love for their craft. Norbert Leo Butz is a four-time Tony Award nominee having won two of those four nominations for his performances in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, and “Catch Me If You Can”. He made his Broadway debut in “Rent” in 1996 before moving on to a slew of additional Broadway credits, including “Wicked”, “The Last Five Years”, and “Big Fish”, among many others. He's also an accomplished TV and film actor with credits such as “Justified: City Primeval”, “The Good Wife”, “Blue Bloods”, Fosse/Verdon”, Dan in Real Life”, “Better Nate Than Ever” and the most recent, “The Exorcist: The Believer”. His fourth and latest solo album, King of Hearts was co-written with his eldest daughter, Clara Butz. Just in time for turkey day, in which we have a lot to be thankful for, comes this delightful discussion with plenty of fixins. Fresh from their excellent new podcast, A Tripp Through Comedy, two new guests join me but I've been following them ever since we all met during Triviaspotting. Ross Bratin and Tripp Burton join me to talk all about the filmography of Frank Oz, someone each of us love and grew up with - whether as a Muppet or as a director, his achievements and talent are immeasurable. We start with his very first solo gig as a director, The Muppets Take Manhattan and go all the way up to his last narrative feature, Death at a Funeral. We discover some thematic ties and most importantly, we have lots of laughs due to Oz's incredible skills as a comedic filmmaker. In other words, mostly (but not entirely) a love fest for someone that we hope gets together again to make another film in the future. But if not, we're glad he accomplished so much throughout his career. Con artist Lawrence Jamieson (Michael Caine) is a longtime resident of a luxurious coastal resort, where he enjoys the fruits of his deceptions -- that is, until a competitor, Freddy Benson (Steve Martin), shows up. When the new guy's lowbrow tactics impinge on his own work, Jamieson resolves to get rid of him. Confident of his own duplicitous talents, Jamieson challenges Benson to a winner-takes-all competition: whoever swindles their latest mark first can stay, while the other must leave town. Today on Buzzn The Tower we unearth pure comedy gold as we chat about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I'm Mo Shapiro and joining me as always the Ruprecht to my Lawrence Jamieson, Max Sanders. And with that...

A movie about a rivalry between two con artists in the French Riviera while dressed in classic menswear? Yes, please! For this bonus episode, we watch Frank Oz's 1988 film "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", which shows off Michael Caine's Lawrence Jamieson in his English trad glory, complete with DB blazers and regimental ties. Steve Martin's buffoonish Freddy Benson gets to rock menswear on the other side of the spectrum, channeling the 80's with a pastel shirt, mid-wash jeans, and two-tone loafers. It's a fun, hilarious movie that has surprisingly good menswear, especially when you compare it to current comedies.
