As part of the legendary first-ever Book and Film Globe Festival, we recorded an episode of our legendary podcast at The Book House in Long Branch, New Jersey, the hottest new bookstore on the Jersey Shore. Host Neal Pollack traveled thousands of miles to talk to some of his favorite contributors about the important cultural products of the day. It was delightful, and we drank much Pelican Punch.Stephen Garrett and Neal reunited on a couch to talk about Alex Garland's 'Civil War.' Neal appreciated the aesthetics of the movie but despised its politics. Stephen didn't mind the politics but didn't really think the story works. Neal says the movie is an absolute projection of liberal neurosis about the possible re-election of Donald Trump. Neal likens it to 'Red Dawn,' which Stephen thinks is vaguely ridiculous, but the comparison is apt. What kind of American are you? Hopefully not the kind of American who thinks 'Civil War' is a documentary. Does this movie imagine what a Civil War would be like in modern America? Sure. But it's still a paranoid fantasy. On the opposite end of the cultural spectrum is the fun and funny Girls 5Eva. we suppose your mileage may vary on this Tina Fey comedy about an aging 90s girl group. Contributor Matthew Ehrlich journeyed from New York City to the Jersey Shore to have a delightful conversation with Neal about the Tina Fey comedy factor, the fabulous Renée Elise Goldsberry, and who sings the Fuck the Police parody, "Ducks Are Mean Geese."Thanks to Stephen and Matthew for making the trip, and thanks for Sea of Reeds Media for operating such amazing bookstores. This will not be our last live recording ever. Thanks for listening at all times, and in all formats!

On Monday, we wrapped up our review of The Gentleman. Today, we're checking out another Netflix series, swapping the gangs, drugs, and stylized violence of a Guy Ritchie crime-drama for the pizazz and absurdity of a Tina Fey comedy. Girls5eva stars Paula Pell, Busy Philipps, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Sara Bareilles. It is about a 1990s girl group that reunites 20-some years later in hopes of reenergizing their lives and capturing some of the magic of their youth. Tune in to hear our thoughts on "Fort Worth," the premiere of season three. Welcome to Today's Episode!
The bingeable comedy series Girls5eva is a silly parody of the music industry. It's about four down-on-their-luck members of a 90s girl group who reunite to stage a comeback, and find that a lot has changed. The show features a stacked cast, including Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps, and Paula Pell. Girls5Eva recently moved to Netflix and just returned for a new season, so today, we revisit our conversation about the series.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Despite never really doing comedy before ‘Girls5eva,' Renée Elise Goldsberry has managed to steal nearly every scene she's been in over the two seasons of that show's initial run on Peacock and third, which arrives with a splash on Netflix this week. In this episode, the Tony and Grammy Award winning actor reveals what it was like to find her comedic voice as the self-obsessed diva Wickie Roy, including how the character has inspired her to become more ambitious in her own career and the parallels between mastering Tina Fey's brand of rapid-fire jokes and learning to rap for her role as Angelica Schyuler in Lin-Manuel Miranda's ‘Hamilton.' Goldsberry talks about getting cut out of Fey and Amy Poehler's movie ‘Sisters,' meeting co-star Paula Pell in their musical episode ‘Documentary Now' and why she would be “shocked” if there wasn't a fourth season of ‘Girls5eva' coming to Netflix in the near future. On Wednesday's show: This week's winter freeze is nearly over, and the Texas grid has held up well. If many were to blame for grid failures in 2021, who gets credit for this week's relatively smooth sailing? It's a political question and one we answer in this week's political roundup, along with the Iowa caucuses, looking ahead to New Hampshire and South Carolina in the GOP presidential race, and other developments. Also this hour: Former Houstonian Renée Elise Goldsberry, who won a Tony for her role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, returns home for a concert Saturday night at the Hobby Center. She tells Houston Public Media's Ernie Manouse how her long career in acting and singing began right here in the Bayou City. And, ahead of a NOVA episode tonight on the James Webb Space Telescope, we hear from one of the folks behind the project that's brought us remarkable high-resolution images from deep space.
Host Meg Wolitzer presents three stories about finding solutions to complex problems, and to simple ones. T. C. Boyle tackles evolution and government intervention in “Top of the Food Chain,” read by Zach Grenier. In Matthew Ryan Frankel's “Carapace,” a young boy struggles with feelings at a family funeral—with the help of some crabs. The reader is Philip Estrera. And a young woman traveling between two worlds and two families has to deal with what to put in “The Suitcase” by Meron Hadero. The reader is Renée Elise Goldsberry. The show also includes an interview with Hadero.

The film follows a young boy, Lewis, who is sent to live with his uncle, Jonathan, in a creaky, old house. He soon learns it was previously inhabited by a villainous warlock. Universal Pictures released the film in the United States on September 21, 2018. It was a box office success, grossing over $131 million worldwide and received mostly positive reviews from critics who largely praised the cast, but said the film did not fully live up to its potential. Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry (She-Hulk, Girls 5Eva) chats all about the Game of Thrones prequel, House of Dragon (HBO) on the latest episode of Son of a Binge. Renée reveals why she prefers the prequel to the original. Plus, she confesses what made her stop watching Game of Thrones in the early seasons. She also talks about what she learned from being on One Life to Live, and how soap operas set the stage for dramas like House of Dragon. Renée gets candid about diversity on television and why shows like Friends did such a disservice to Black audiences. Finally, she chats about her time on Hamilton, from when she first auditioned, to the night Steve Martin (Only Murders in the Building) and Phylicia Rashad came to see it at the Public Theater. She also reveals the Succession role she had to pass on. She breaks down House of Dragon, which stars Emma D'Arcy and Milly Alcock (Princess Rhaenrya Targaryen), Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower), Nanna Blondell (Lady Laena Velayron), Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys Targaryen), Graham McTavish (Harrold Westerling), and Phoebe Campbell (Rhaena Targaryen). That's the date previously held by Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot, which has shifted back to Valentine's Day, February 14, 2025, pushing back the untitled Marvel movie previously slotted there to November 7, 2025. Avengers: Secret Wars moves from November 7, 2025, to May 1, 2026. The untitled Marvel Studios movie previously dated May 1, 2026, has been removed from Disney's schedule. The other Phase 5 movies -- 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Marvels, and 2024's Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts -- are unaffected. It is curious that, of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 6 movies, only Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, dated May 2, 2025, is unaffected by the date shuffle. There were to be two Avengers films released in 2025, but if things do not change, there will now be a year wait between The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, as there was between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. There were also six untitled Marvel movies on Disney's schedule. With Fantastic Four pushing back the one previously dated for February 14, 2025, and the May 1, 2016 film removed to make room for Secret Wars, the remaining dates include July 25, 2025, November 7, 2025, February 13, 2026, July 24, 2026, and November 6, 2026. There's a fair chance one of those dates is reserved for Armor Wars. OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [55:08] We would love to hear back from you! Call the voicemail line at 1-844-THE-BUS1 or 844-843-2871. Javier Muñoz (Hamilton, In The Heights) stars in The Devil Wears Prada, the new musical based on the film and novel, with songs by Elton John and Shaina Taub. Javier plays Nigel (instantly erasing any memories of Stanley Tucci), and discusses how creating a role is less about ego and more about serving the story and character; the challenges of rehearsing changes during the day while performing the existing show at night; how he gave his first Broadway performance of Alexander Hamilton in front of President Barack Obama and his First Lady Michelle; what originating the song “Seen” means to him and his activism (and how precious it is to work with his “Seen” partner); and how debuting a song written by Sir Elton John differs from performing songs written by Sir Lin-Manuel Miranda. We had the pleasure of interviewing BLKBOK over Zoom video.Neoclassical pianist and Detroit native BLKBOK is set to soundtrack this year's Juneteenth celebrations with the deluxe version of his debut album 'Black Book'. Arriving on June 17 via icons+giants, ‘Black Book DLUX' is a timely natural continuation of BLKBOK's critically-acclaimed debut as a composer, reflecting on pertinent social issues, with counterpoints, and sustaining a dialogue through his thought-provoking pieces. The package includes 11 new interstitial poems woven throughout the album, written and narrated by award-winning Jamaican poet Lauren Delapenha. Additionally, it features two new powerful singles “Kendrick + Karine” and “Forgotten Girls.”While touring the world as a pianist or musical director with the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Timbaland and John Mayer, BLKBOK spent his private time composing his own original material, music that was inspired by his love of hip-hop and classical music. When the pandemic set in and touring came to a halt, he finalized these compositions which led to getting signed by icons+giants/WMG and releasing his first body of solo work, last year's ‘Black Book.' BLKBOK was inspired to create ‘Black Book' as a tribute to the movie ‘Green Book' and the courageous story of pianist/composer Don Shirley, whose trailblazing spirit helped open the door for black classical pianists of which there remains too few. The largely instrumental album features a standout vocal collaboration with Hamilton's Tony and Grammy Award-winning Renée Elise Goldsberry on “My Life.” Provocative singles like “George Floyd and the Struggle for Equality,” “November 7th 2020” and “Michelle's First Day At The White House” offer listeners unique perspectives of the social climate that we live in, and an opportunity to hear BLKBOK's reflections of the world through the keys of the piano.Since releasing his debut album, BLKBOK has taken to social media weekly, while developing new work in real-time and challenging the way we listen to classical music. A 21st century black pianist equally infatuated with rappers like Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as the classical greats like Debussy, Mozart, and Bach, BLKBOK has gone viral on TikTok with his riveting neoclassical TikTok covers of Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar. On Instagram, he hosts a monthly “What's Goin' On” social series, where he develops new songs related to current cultural milestones and events, and offers an open forum for fans to share their feelings and discuss social issues. We want to hear from you!
