The pronunciation of "Casa Grande," an Arizona city, has sparked popular debate. Some pronounce it with a distinct "e" sound at the end ("Casa Grande"), while other drop the "e" and say "Casa grand." This week on Valley 101, a podcast by the Arizona Republic and azcentral.com about metro Phoenix and beyond, we talk with former 12 News anchor Vanessa Ruiz and artist and co-owner of True West magazine Bob Boze Bell discuss the correct pronunciation. Betsy Gaines Quammen is a Montana-based historian and writer whose work explores the history and myths of the American West and how those stories have endured and shaped life in the region today. Betsy joined me on the podcast several years ago to discuss her amazing book, American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, and Public Lands in the West, and since then, she's published another must-read: True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America. In True West, Betsy meets face-to-face with a wide range of folks here in the West– from militia members to hardcore environmentalists– and seeks to understand why they believe what they do. Combining these conversations with her deep understanding of history, Betsy is able to demonstrate the fascinating complexity and contradictions that define many of the people and issues in today's West. We recorded this conversation on stage at the 2024 Old Salt Festival, where Betsy was nice enough to join us for the three-day festival of music, food, and conversation. As you'll hear me say in the episode, Betsy and her work have played a huge role in my never-ending quest to try and understand this region, and I consider her to be a great friend and mentor. But even if you don't have any interest in the West's history or modern-day conflicts, there are big lessons to be learned from Betsy's approach to her work. She is committed to finding the humanity in everyone– even people she completely disagrees with. Rather than attack them and their ideas, she approaches them with genuine curiosity, really trying to understand what they believe and why. And even when no common ideological ground can be found, there is still mutual respect. And I think most people will agree that we need more of these types of respectful interactions these days. In this conversation, we talk a bit about Betsy's background and why she is so fascinated with understanding myths and the West. We talk about her commitment to having deep conversations with people across political and socio-economic spectrums, and she describes one of the unlikely friendships she built with a man whose views on politics, public lands, and the environment could not be further from her own. We discuss the importance of getting off the internet and having face-to-face conversations, how real estate development is changing the ecology and economics of the West, her thoughts on the future, and more. We also took questions from the audience, which was a lot of fun. Again, I can't thank Betsy enough for joining me onstage for this conversation, but more importantly, for the wisdom she has shared with me over the years. If you haven't read True West, I encourage you to pick up a copy as soon as you can, and I'd also encourage you to listen to our first conversation, where Betsy talks a lot about her life and career journey. And tickets for the 2025 Old Salt Festival are on sale now, so if you'd like to experience conversations like this in person– plus music, food, Western makers, and more– follow the link in the episode notes to grab your tickets. --- Betsy Gaines Quammen True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, and Public Lands in the West Old Salt Festival Betsy's first M&P appearance Sign up for Ed's Good News from the American West Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/betsy-gaines-quammen-2/ --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 4:15 - Introducing Betsy at Old Salt 7:45 - Why the West? 10:15 - Discussing myths 14:15 - Betsy talks across the aisle 17:30 - Betsy's relationship with Lance 19:45 - Lance's email 23:15 - Creating conversations outside the internet 26:00 - Real estate development in the West 30:00 - Covid as a catalyst 34:30 - Predicting the future 35:45 - Q&A 39:15 - Should we trust the government? 41:30 - Lance's takeaways 43:30 - A ‘real' Montanan 49:45 - Our energy future 53:00 - Parting thoughts --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Support Mountain & Prairie Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

In this episode, I talk to the amazing comedian, PHIL NICHOL Comedian, actor, writer, musician, podcaster, and director, Nichol is a man of many talents. As a comic, he has reduced me to tears of laughter on many occasions. A regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and UK comedy circuit, Nichol's style of comedy is outrageous, unhinged, unexpected, and hysterically funny. Among many performances over the years, at the Edinburgh Fringe, I have watched Nichol as a guest for Nicholas Parsons Happy Hour in 2005, appear in the plays Talk Radio and True West (both 2006), Killer Joe (2007), and The School for Scandal (2009) and Hughie in 2019. She shared why she decided to write a marriage of convenience story, why she chose Cheyenne as the setting for this new series, and what she would ask a reader if she could. Patrons get to hear about her long-ago pen name and why she chose one. That was a very interesting discussion we had on that topic. A Love Discovered by Tracie PetersonThe heart finds its way when one least expects it--even in the most unforgiving frontiers.Invited by a friend to trek west and help establish the newly formed town of Cheyenne, Edward Vogel is prepared to leave the haunting memories of his wife and son's deaths behind him. The only problem is the corrupt new railroad town wants family men who can establish law and order, and desperation leads Edward to his friend Marybeth with a proposition of marriage. After her father's death leaves her with no means of support, Marybeth Kruger is in danger of having her two-year-old half sister taken from her. So when Edward Vogel, the widower husband of her late best friend, offers her a marriage of convenience to escape both their troubles, she has no choice but to accept.Life in Cheyenne is fraught with danger, but will this arrangement be enough to save Edward and Marybeth from the pasts they tried to escape? Today - we'll be taking a look at the western literary landscape as Sun writer Kevin Simpson chats with the author of a new book that delves deep into the American West and the myths that fuel political and social division.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week we have a chat with Dr Betsy Gaines Quammen about her book True West: Myth & Mending On The Far Side Of America and the fascinating cast of characters which stalk both its pages and the left-hand side of the U.S.of A.
This is a segment of episode 354 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “True West: Myth & Mending In The American West w/ Betsy Gaines Quammen.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/betsy-gaines-quammen-2 Purchase a copy of True West from Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3TjfJfM Historian and author Betsy Gaines Quammen returns to the podcast to discuss her new book, True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America, published by Torrey House Press. Building on her previous book, American Zion, Gaines Quammen follows the historical roots and trajectories of troubling political trends in the Western United States, decoupling the myths and material realities of the landscapes and the peoples and the more-than-human lives that occupy them. “True West explores myths of the West and how, if left unexamined, they distort the realities of the present and exacerbate polarizations. These misperceptions about land, politics, liberty, and self-determination threaten the wellbeing of western communities overrun by newcomers seeking a dream—and the country, unless America recognizes the dangers of building a national identity on illusion. Gaines Quammen interrogates it all by listening, carefully, to people from varying political and cultural perspectives as she seeks to reconcile the deep anger and broad misunderstandings that linger amid myths that define and impede the West and America.” Betsy Gaines Quammen is a historian and writer. She received a PhD from Montana State University where she studied religion, history and the philosophy of science. Her dissertation focused on Mormon history and the roots of armed public land conflicts occurring in the United States. She is fascinated at how religious views shape relationships to landscape. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, New York Daily News, and the History News Network. She is the author of American Zion: Cliven Bundy, God, and Public Lands in the West and True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America. Betsy lives in Montana with her husband, writer David Quammen, three giant dogs, a sturdy cat, and a lanky rescue python. YOU - The Master Entrepreneur - A Guide to True Greatness with Stan Hustad
I remember every year starting to look at the seers Christmas catalog that came usually just before Thanksgiving. End it truly was what they often cold in the wishbook. And since our family was kind of poor we knew we weren't going to get everything on our wishes. I do remember when I asked for a cowboy hat and the play double pistol set that would shoot off paper caps and go bang. Just like Roy Rogers and all of my heroes that I saw on television in the movies. To my wonderful amusement and amazement I got it and it is still one of my favorite pictures in my long list of Christmas memories. Well today I introduce my new friend and partner who is a world-class expert on the western way of life and about the life of the cowboy. So let me introduce you to Stuart of True West magazine who has stories to tell about the lore and legends and even more what it was really like to live the life of a cowboy. Perhaps today we need a lot more people who believe in and live out the cowboy code in life and business. Thanks Stan

Martin Scorsese's new KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON and the 1950 Delmar Daves Western BROKEN ARROW are both films made by non-Native filmmakers seeking to confront stereotypes about Native Americans, but they are reflective of two distinct cultural moments separated by decades of change when it comes to representation in Hollywood storytelling. This week we spend some time wrestling with the characters, contradictions, and compartmentalization in FLOWER MOON before bringing BROKEN ARROW back in to see how attitudes have progressed when it comes to correcting the historical record and shaking viewers out of their assumptions, how the two films intersect and diverge in their depictions of white outsiders and cross-cultural marriages, and to what degree each embodies the limitations of Indigenous stories told from a non-Indigenous perspective. And for Your Next Picture Show we take a brief look at Michael Apted's 1992 Sundance sensation INCIDENT AT OGLALA, another film we considered for this pairing that takes a documentary approach to a different true-life story of crime and culture clash on a Native American reservation. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about BROKEN ARROW, KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Martin Scorsese's new Killers of the Flower Moon, based on David Grann's horrifying non-fiction true-crime book, tracks systematic murder in a 1920s Osage tribe by a group of white men looking to secure the tribe's profitable oil rights. Among the players are a couple, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, who appear to truly love each other while not entirely realizing they're also in a predator-prey relationship. The interracial romance, racial tension, and struggle for survival pairs well with the 1950 Western Broken Arrow, also based on real historical events and real figures, and centering on a different interracial couple — Jimmy Stewart as a weary fortysomething veteran who begins brokering a peace between Arizona settlers and an Apache tribe, and Debra Paget in redface as a member of that tribe. This week we start our Western wandering with a look at Broken Arrow's spot in history, as a first step toward Hollywood depicting Native Americans as multifaceted people instead of stock Western villains. We sort through the film's pros and cons, including the specter of clumsy, careful message movies trying to counteract decades of stereotypes. And we discuss how stiff execution and the 25-year age difference between Stewart and Paget hinders what's supposed to be a romance for the ages. Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about Broken Arrow, Killers of the Flower Moon, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. For iHeartRadio, Sanjit De Silva conducted a high-spirited phone interview with noted journalist Jonathan P-Wright, an interview that was high in spirit. It goes without saying that Sanjit De Silva is one of the most versatile and skilled actors in Hollywood. He has a God-given talent for transforming a script into silver screen mastery. Actors are born and not created in Hollywood. There are multiple hats that Sanjit De Silva wears in the production of 'True West'. A playwright and an actor, Sanjit seamlessly blends the two worlds so as to produce a visual experience that is both polarizing and captivating. In terms of theater and fine arts, Sanjit De Silva is the definition of a true student. It was during the first half of his life that he dedicated himself to education and self-development. On this episode of FM On Demand with Tara Fitzpatrick, we are catching up with SDSU's Executive Chef Tiago Battastini, a longtime friend of FM who we happily ran into at this year's UMass Chefs Conference. This conversation features a recap of how the UMass Chefs' Conference played out this year for Battastini and his team, and the full-circle moment of attending this conference in a leadership role. We find out what's been going on with that dining team at SDSU, including hyper-local campus farming, world flavors, new projects and how Battastini gets inspired by his crew every day. Also, we talked off-air about a very cool new concept at SDSU that draws on some very fascinating historical cuisine that's not often explored, but college foodservice is actually an ideal place to execute it. Intrigued? We are too! Stay tuned for FM's next issue of our new digizine for more on that hint!
You've never heard of a business like David Fischette's. David is the Co-Founder, CEO, and Chief Creative at Go West Creative (GWC), an industry-leading marketing agency specializing in bringing brand stories to life through unparalleled live, virtual, and hybrid experiences. Go West has helped hundreds of organizations, including giants like the United Nations, HP, Deloitte, CVS, SalesForce, DuPont, Petco, Inspire Brands, Farmers, Aetna, and Sonic, effectively communicate their message to key stakeholders. Go West has also won dozens of awards, including Special Event Magazine's "Top 50 Events Companies," Event Marketer Magazine's "Top 100 It List for Event Agencies," and Expertise's "Best Branding Agencies in Nashville." David has 38+ years of experience helping big global brands in telling their stories so they can better relate to their target audiences and motivate them to take action. Known for his passion and over 38 years at the helm of the award-winning Go West Creative Group, David Fischette has established himself as a visionary in the live production, broadcast, media and entertainment industries. He is a highly respected and sought-after Executive Producer and Director, both in Live Events and Film Productions. Additionally, he has produced live performances by Blake Shelton, John Legend, Sheryl Crow, Bebe Rexha, Jay Leno, Earth, Wind & Fire, Chicago, Josh Groban, and other top artists. When asked about the name Go West Creative, David delivers an exceptional answer: True North is your purpose, but your True West is your sense of curiosity, adventure and exploration. Success is about marrying the two together. Build your brand intentionally Prior to the success of Go West, David had a wild and rocky journey starting out in the events industry. Laughing, he shares that his business has evolved - internally and externally. After founding an event production company in 1984, David and his Co-Founder named it Audio Ecstasy. Their original tagline was “When image is everything.” Laughing, David is embarrassed about his original motto. But the name change and rebrand are an important reminder that as we discover our mission and evolve our personal brand, our business needs to follow suit. It's never too late to pivot and discover that your work can follow the direction of your personal growth! After doing some soul searching, David realized something important: They weren't an event company; They were a creative agency. The modalities they worked in - audio, video, creative branding - were just tools in a bigger toolbox. With their mission in mind, they rebranded and watched their business grow exponentially. To connect with others, be authentic David has learned many lessons in his 39 years as a creative professional. He'll be the first to tell you that he spent years trying to make the business seem more successful than it was. But after a situation where an employee embezzled client money, it was time for a reckoning. David cast aside his pride and talked openly with the customers. After informing them of the situation, he told them that he wanted to grow with them and show up for them going forward. The responses were overwhelmingly positive! This was an important moment for David and for the company. Instead of shying away from a challenge, he stood up, took accountability for the lack of oversight and used the experience to grow as a CEO and entrepreneur. Out of a difficult situation, he forged deep client relationships that he maintains to this day. Lesson in diversification Now, Go West is experiencing exponential growth. They are not in the business of just producing events - they create transformative experiences. The team at Go West translates clients' company messaging into creative experiences, both for corporate teams and for their customers. Their business has three facets: Events, Content, and Experiences. They have even invented something entirely new: Spoken Cinema. For Spoken Cinema, Go West collaborates with spoken word artist Steve Connell. Steve writes a unique piece about the company's vision and mission, then the Go West creative team works on a digital landscape including an original music score. It's completely unique and seeks to connect customers to the impact and vision of the company - fusing more enduring client relationships for years to come. Quotes “The way that I have connected the most with people is when I shared our actual business struggles. People are actually drawn to authenticity. It took me a lot of years to realize that I don't have to be something I'm not. I'm just a guy who's been doing this a long time, and we have wins and we have losses, but we're persistent.” “The way to hold on to clients is to be authentic and build trust. Sometimes the best way to build trust is to say - no, we're not the right agency for you - instead of just accepting everything.” “I'm a huge fan of experiential. The beauty of experiential work is that you don't need 2,000 people… you need 50 or 100 people to experience something, and it spreads like wildfire.” “Our company's so interesting because we have the event side of what we do, but we also have the content side. We also have an agency side of the business - a business and experiential agency.” “For Spoken Cinema, we have partnered with a spoken word artist out of Los Angeles by the name of Steve Connell. We've been creating these pieces together for over a decade - which either open a show or if it's a charity, it's before the ask. It's specifically connecting the audience to what they do. Not just their job, but what they do. Steve writes the piece and we create the digital landscape and original music score. We've done over 250 pieces.” Links mentioned in this episode: Visit the Website for Go West Creative at https://www.gowestcreativegroup.com/ Learn more about the Spoken Cinema experience at https://spokencinema.com/about/ Connect with David directly on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-fischette-0119b3/ Find Go West Creative on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/gowestcreative/ Follow Go West Creative on Twitter at https://twitter.com/gwcreativegroup?lang=en
