I met Alain Sylvain only once. We recorded a podcast at the very end of October in 2018.  I remembered it long after, and looking back, was conscious that my own thinking evolved as a result of our conversation. The news of his tragic death last month has had a profound impact on many people I know. I debated whether it was helpful or not to reload this conversation.  After listening to it again, I hope that it will let those of you that knew him well, add to your memory of him. And for those of us that didn't, I hope it will help know him a little better. Life is short. I have come to believe that at the end, we can hope for three things. To be remembered. To have made a difference. And to be loved. I am grateful to have met him even briefly. I am sorry beyond words for the sorrow and the loss that his departure leaves behind for his family and those that knew him and loved him.

Alain Sylvain was a really incredible die guy who is the founder and CEO of Sylvain, a strategy and design company headquartered here in New York City he also played a key role in the number of organizations including his alma mater Vassar College and kindred and networking organization for DEI and E.S.G. professionals and he also serves on New York City's mayor's creative council. He leaves behind three children and his wife after passing away suddenly at age 47 last week and he had so much to say that I really felt this was a good opportunity to share some of it with you. And it's almost wrong of me to say that he had so much to say in the past tense because the reality is he still has quite a lot to say that we can learn from about brand purpose and about how companies don't have to choose between doing good and being profitable. So I wanted to bring one of my past conversations with him from this podcast back to you guys in honor of him. From his family: One way to help honor and build on the community of love that Alain created is to direct donations to Anseye Pou Haiti and the Haitian Education and Leadership Program.

Strategy and design consultant, Alain Sylvain, was born and raised in New York City, the son of Haitian immigrants. His early creativity included playing in fake bands and starting a fake restaurant. After studying international affairs and business he embarked on a brief stint in political campaigns, but that morphed into advertising and he found himself embracing both his creativity and business acumen to help leverage the might of corporations for the greater good.  Thanks to Adobe 99U Conference for connecting us for this interview. In recent years, there has been a massive shift in the business world from brands and businesses being a passive stage for culture, to one where they are active challengers of culture. The role of business in people's personal lives is very different than it was — the relationship between consumer and brand, and what we expect from businesses has changed. How does this change the way we think about the businesses and brands we lead? Alain Sylvain is just the expert we need to hear from on this topic.   Alain is the CEO of Sylvain Labs, where he champions the application of science and a little whimsy to identifying new product and brand opportunities that could change the world. This unique approach has led him and his company to create lasting results for clients including Google, Spotify, GM, Patagonia, Airbnb, and more.   What can corporate brands learn from the brands within the music industry, i.e. musicians and bands? According to Alain, a lot. He explains how they represent value systems and ideas their consumers identify with, and why this is so powerful. We discuss how brands can bring science and whimsy together and the recent shift in society where people identify more with brands than governments or religions. Alain shares what this means for brands, why they need to stand for something and operate with purpose and intention beyond just profit generation, and how focusing on the culture of doing good and the greater good can help drive innovation and innovative solutions.   If you are ready to: get buy-in from key decision makers on your next big idea be a high-impact, high-value member that ignites change foster a culture of innovation where everyone on your team is bringing innovative ideas that tackle challenges and seize opportunities… Join us on LaunchStreet — gotolaunchstreet.com   Mentioned in This Episode: Alain Sylvain Sylvain Labs @Sylvain Labs on Twitter, Instagram Kiss U2BeyondBrands NASA Acorns Oscar Insurance Colin Kaepernick Ad for Nike Gillette The Best A Man Can Be Campaign Spotify

“People tend to see strategy and design as two separate things.” As the founder and CEO of Sylvain Labs, Alain Sylvain sits at the intersection of strategy and design. We discussed this including several examples of design thinking at work on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Alain Sylvain Alain Sylvain is the founder and CEO of Sylvain Labs, a strategy and design consultancy that helps companies seize the reality and potential of their business, products and brands. Clients include, Google, American Express, Airbnb, Spotify, Blackrock, Samsung, Pepsico, AB InBev, Jet, IKEA, GM, Sonos, the NBA, and others. Founded in 2010, the company is headquartered in NYC, with offices in Amsterdam and Richmond, VA, and a Certified B-Corporation. In addition to Sylvain Labs, Alain is a partner and investor in several ventures, including Master + Dynamic, a design-driven, premium audio brand, So Choice Softworks, a mobile gaming company, Lilo, an açai bowl company, and PetMio, a smart pet food startup. In addition, he has served as executive producer on short documentaries, including Some Kind of Quest and Instafame. He has been featured in various news outlets and is a current board member of Plus Pool and the VCU Brandcenter. Episode Highlights The trouble with strategy and design. “People tend to see strategy and design as two separate things — maybe we’re part of the problem because we list them together!” Alain laughed. Design means many things. It can be “at the Adobe level” (graphic design) but it also means design thinking. With a plethora of definitions, what does design thinking actually mean? “It’s really more of a statement about what it’s not. It’s not graphic design. It’s about channeling the end user as you think and design.” We also talked about how business can corrupt words and phrases like design thinking and story. Where does Alain see design thinking at work? "Look at any major category — in mattresses you have Casper, in eyewear you have Warby Parker, in insurance there’s Oscar. Design is at the core of all of these.” What brand has made Alain smile recently? “There’s something magical going on at Spotify. It’s a brand — despite their best attempts! But is has utility in my life.” To learn more, go to the Sylvain Labs website. Popular music provides the ultimate gauge of contemporary attitudes about culture, politics and society at large. It’s the language we use to subconsciously discuss and deliberate the issues of the day. Whether it’s about the rise and fall of disco, the role of boy bands or contagion of K-Pop, there is no greater measure of social sentiment than popular music. It creates an understanding of a society’s collective attitude. And with that, one could say that the music industry has the answers to some pretty compelling cultural questions.
