A Drummers Life Originally aired on 10/25/21 on our sister channel - Pop Culture Addicts. In this replay, we revisit our chat with Stephen Perkins, the drummer of Janes Addiction, Porno for Pyros, The Halloween Jack, and a few other bands. We talked with Stephen about growing up and learning about drums. We talked about the growth of Janes Addiction, how that spread out into other projects over the years, how these expansions in projects impacted his music, and his drum playing. We talked about his musical influences like David Bowie, The New York Dolls, and punk rock in general. In fact, one of the new releases for The Halloween Jack is a unique rocked-up cover of the New York Dolls song called "Trash." Stephen and the rest of the band wanted to put this song out as a tribute/ token of love to the glam/punk band Sylvain Sylvain, who died after losing his battle with cancer. Stephen also told us about his most recent project at that time, "Perkins Palace", a new record label for up-and-coming talent that needs an opportunity much like Jane's Addiction did when they got signed. fWotD Episode 2721: New York Dolls (album) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 16 October 2024 is New York Dolls (album).New York Dolls is the debut studio album by the American rock band New York Dolls, released on July 27, 1973, by Mercury Records. In the years leading up to the album, the Dolls had developed a local fanbase by playing regularly in lower Manhattan after forming in 1971. However, most music producers and record companies were reluctant to work with them because of their vulgarity and onstage fashion as well as homophobia in New York; the group later appeared in exaggerated drag on the album cover for shock value. After signing a contract with Mercury, the Dolls recorded their first album at The Record Plant in New York City with producer Todd Rundgren, who was known for his sophisticated pop tastes and held a lukewarm opinion of the band. Despite stories of conflicts during the recording sessions, lead singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain later said Rundgren successfully captured how the band sounded live. The resulting music on the album – a mix of carefree rock and roll, influences from Brill Building pop, and campy sensibilities – explores themes of urban youth, teen alienation, adolescent romance, and authenticity, as rendered in Johansen's colloquial and ambiguous lyrics.New York Dolls was met with widespread critical acclaim but sold poorly and polarized listeners. The band proved difficult to market outside their native New York and developed a reputation for rock-star excesses while touring the United States in support of the album. Despite its commercial failure, New York Dolls was an influential precursor to the 1970s punk rock movement as the group's crude musicianship and youthful attitude on the album challenged the prevailing trend of musical sophistication in popular music, particularly progressive rock. Among the most acclaimed albums in history, it has since been named in various publications as one of the best debut records in rock music and one of the greatest albums of all time. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Wednesday, 16 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see New York Dolls (album) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Matthew.

Although neither popular nor long-lived as a band, the New York Dolls were one of the most influential bands of the punk and glam rock genres. Their debut album, the eponymously named New York Dolls came out on the strength of their lower Manhattan fan base and received critical acclaim. However, their appeal outside of New York was limited and the album was considered a commercial failure in the United States. The New York Dolls (also known as “The Dolls”) sported an androgynous look onstage, dressing in satin, high heels, dresses, and lots of makeup. Much of their wardrobe was acquired at a local Salvation Army thrift store. The band personnel included David Johansen on vocals, Arthur “Killer” Kane on bass, Jerry Nolan on drums, Sylvain Sylvain on keyboards, rhythm guitar and vocals, and Johnny Thunder on lead guitar and vocals. Front man David Johansen would later perform under the name Buster Poindexter.Although the band would produce only one other album after their debut, their influence was significant for both punk rock and glam rock genres.Wayne brings us this forerunner of punk that is “too fast to live, too young to die.” FrankensteinThis song is sometimes listed as “Frankenstein (Orig.)” because Edgar Winter's song of the same name had already been released prior to the band recording their own, though it had been used in their live shows previously. The song was inspired by how repressed kids would gravitate to Manhattan from all over.PillsThe only cover on the album was a 1963 Bo Diddley song. “While I was laying in a hospital bed, a rock n' roll nurse went through my head. She says, "hold out your arm, stick out yo' toungue, I got some pills, boy, I'm 'on give you one.”Jet BoyThis track has a more heavy metal sound in the guitar. The lyrics are simply about a jet boy who stole a baby. There is little explanation as to what a jet boy is other than to say that he flies around New York City. “Jet Boy” was a 50's era comic superhero.Bad GirlThe vocal parts on this track hearken back to a 1950's style, and it also features a boogie rhythm. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Oo-De-Lally by Roger Miller (from the animated picture “Robin Hood”)Yes, it is a stark departure from the Dolls. Disney rolled out their take on the animated Robin Hood tale in this picture featuring Robin Hood as a fox. STAFF PICKS:Over the Hills and Far Away by Led ZeppelinRob leads out the staff picks with a great acoustic riff from Jimmy Page, layering 6- and 12-string guitars. The lyrics were inspired by the feelings of the band touring on the road. This is a single off Led Zeppelin's fifth studio album, Houses of the Holy, and made it to number 51 on the charts. We Can Make It Right by Sherbet Bruce's staff pick is a group that never broke into the US market in a big way, but was one of the biggest pop rock acts in Australia in the 1970's. This track leads off the second studio album entitled “On With the Show,” which hit number 6 on the Australian charts. The song was co-written by Sherbs keyboardist Garth Porter and guitarist Clive Shakespeare.Long Train Runnin' by The Doobie Brothers Lynch features a well known riff from the Tom Johnston vocal era of the Doobies. The group played “Long Train Runnin'” for three years before it was recorded, and it went through a number of names an iterations before its final form was created in the studio.Still...You Turn Me On by Emerson, Lake & Palmer Wayne wraps up the staff picks with a ballad from prog rock power trio Keith Emerson (keyboards) Greg Lake (guitar and vocals) and Carl Palmer (percussion). This is more acoustic rock with a little psychedelic rock thrown in than prog rock, but it is a hauntingly beautiful song. The lyrics are inspired by the feeling of playing in front of an audience. COMEDY TRACK:Sister Mary Elephant by Cheech & ChongA number of comedy sketches were released by this duo, including this Catholic school class skit.
On this episode, we are joined by Jason "Ginchy" Kottwitz, guitarist and primary songwriter of the Austin Texas based rock band The Oxys. "Ginchy", who has had stints with the reformed Dead Boys and Sylvain Sylvain and The Sylvains, and company made one of the coolest new albums ("A Date With The Oxys") to come out in 2022. The boys took the Dead Boys and Cheap Trick and smashed them together to come with a blazing guitar fueled rock n roll record that's up there with the best of them. We have a nice talk about the twenty year trip that led Ginchy to The Oxys and more.. A lot of folks are asking to hear some original Jonesy's Jukebox shows from Indie 103.1 days, and here is a special one for you. This is the day Siouxsie Sioux and Budgie (from the Banshees) came in for the first part of the show, and overlapped with The New York Dolls in the second part! It happened on January 10, 2004, at a time when both artists were passing through town on tours. You know they covered some juicy tidbits from the early days. Enjoy this previously unreleased episode capturing the convergence of these dynamic performers: Siouxsie Sioux, Budgie, David Johansen, Sylvain Sylvain, and of course Steve Jones.

Welcome back to the Rock 'n Roll Ghost Podcast. On this week's episode, the Ghost speaks with musician and composer Jason Hill about his career dating back to his days in the bands Convoy, Louis XIV and Vicki Cryer. As well as his work with The Killers and producing/touring with the New York Dolls and the recent passing of Sylvain Sylvain. Hill also talks about his late career turn towards film and TV composing. He has worked closely with director David Fincher on projects such as Fincher's Gone Girl and the Netflix series Mindhunter. It's a pretty wide ranging, fun interview with someone I go back nearly twenty years with. Also, starting April 1st, Hill will be hosting Film Composing and Music production masterclasses. Check out the Department of Recording and Power's website for more information. Hill also has done scores for the Netflix documentaries The Confession Killer, as well as the forthcoming This is a Robbery. RockerMike and Rob remember Sylvain Sylvain and Phil Spector . Last couple of days a few rocker icons passed away. We discuss they life and times,The good and the ugly. Rock and Roll is a lifestyle. And these guys live it to the fullest. Sylvain Mizrahi[1] (February 14, 1951– January 13, 2021), known professionally as Sylvain Sylvain, was an American rock guitarist, most notable for being a member of the New York Dolls. Harvey Phillip Spector (December 26, 1939 – January 16, 2021) was an American record producer, musician, and songwriter known for his innovative recording practices and entrepreneurship in the 1960s, followed decades later by his trial and conviction for murder in the 2000s. Spector developed the Wall of Sound, a music production formula he described as a Wagnerian approach to rock and roll. He is regarded as one of the most influential figures in pop music history[1] and as the first auteur of the music industry for the unprecedented control he had over every phase of the recording process.[2] After spending three decades in semi-retirement,[3] in 2009 he was convicted for the 2003 murder of the actress Lana Clarkson and sentenced to 19 years to life in prison. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1860745431/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_glc_fabc_H0LbGbZ838YF4 https://www.amazon.com/dp/1785585134/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_glc_fabc_70LbGbWVTJ5YB https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000003BDM/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_glc_fabc_C1LbGb8YCYH9C Please follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.com https://linktr.ee/RobRossi Get your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpedup And https://www.bonfire.com/store/getting-lumped-up/ Subscribe to the Youtube channel Hit the like button --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support https://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup @philspector @Sylvain #livemusic #georgeharrison #johnlennon #pinkfloyd #beatlemania #rock #ledzeppelin #artist #vocals #nirvana #vinyl #guitar #singer #60s #vintage #fashion #concert #photography #love #guitarist #rocknroll #abbeyroad #ringostarr #metal #paulmccartney #music #70s #thebeatles #1960s #art --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rob-rossi/support

The Chain," "Go Your Own Way," "Don't Stop," and "Landslide.
In this episode the guys get introduced by a hip hop legend, gain street cred, leaarn the slang of today, discuss Tik Tok, BitCoin, Rolling Stone, Sylvain Sylvain, The New York Dolls, re-cast Police Academy and much more......
We lost the great Sylvain Sylvain this week and I'm heartbroken. At the same time I am thankful that I did have an opportunity to see Sylvain 10 years ago during the New York Dolls reunion tour and it was an incredible show. I know this mini-episode can't possibly fully honor his entire career, but it wasn't that long ago I did an entire episode dedicated to the New York Dolls and much of that show I talk about how amazing he is as a musician. So after this head on over to episode #16 - The New York Dolls - "Long After a Masquerade". RIP Sylvain. Please send your feedback and comments to me on Facebook at ABCofrockpodcast or Twitter at ABCrockpodcast. I can also be reached via email at ABCofrockpodcast@gmail.com. Hit me me up. My goal is for you to gain a larger appreciation for the bands or the musicians played here on this podcast and I ask for you to go out and purchase their music or legally stream it. It is truly done out of my pure love of the music.
System of a Down pourrait avoir un futur.

We have lost a lot of friends ,who had a major impact on what I consider the musical landscape. They’ve done work for Google, Patagonia, Spotify, and many other leading companies. On this episode, we discuss:The connection between corporate social responsibility and the bottom line is now, and what it is likely to be in the future How the brands of tomorrow need to figure out their purpose. What roles will consumers play in helping brands figure out their missions? How does Alain himself get better at predicting what’s to come to be more useful to brands on an ongoing basis. As always, we welcome your feedback. Please make sure to subscribe, rate, and review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and Google Play.

From Punk Rockers The Dead Boys To Nashville's Plowboy Records - Cheetah Chrome Visits Madame Perry's Salon Punk legend Cheetah Chrome – co-founder of The Dead Boys, and more recently Nashville’s Plowboy Records – released his first ever studio collection of solo material, ‘Solo’ on Plowboy on October 8, 2013. ‘Solo’ is a 7-song EP of cuts from a 1996 recording session produced by Genya Ravan (with executive producer Hilly Kristal) he has deemed his “great lost solo album” and a Nashville session in 2010 featuring Sylvain Sylvain (New York Dolls), Lez Warner (The Cult), and Sean Koos (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts). ‘Solo’ segues from hard, loud rock to jangly power pop, all anchored by Cheetah’s gruff growl and intricate guitar work. Lead-off track “Sharky” is an instrumental with a touch of surf rock featuring Cheetah on organ and “Rollin Voodoo” rumbles with fuzzed bass and big drums. The EP was released timed to the film ‘CBGB.’ Chrome is portrayed by Rupert Grint in the film and also makes a cameo appearance in it. "Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy's Tale From The Front Lines Of Punk Rock" was published in 2010 and is an honest, raw memoir of Chrome's life once music claimed him. February 2012 Chrome became Creative Director of A&R/Director of Special Projects for Plowboy Records, an alternative/legacy label being launched by Shannon Pollard, grandson of Country legend Eddy Arnold, and music historian/author Don Cusic. This was officially announced on May 15, 2012. Chrome is currently producing a tribute record to Arnold by various artists at RCA Studio B in Nashville; as well as preparing a new full length release by The Batusis. Cheetah Chrome is a founding member of Rocket From The Tombs, The Dead Boys, and The Batusis (w/Sylvain Sylvain) and an acclaimed author.
