On this episode of It's Real, Jordan and Demi interview two multitalented performers who first appeared on screen when they were young. Katelyn Tarver was a contestant on American Juniors, where she made the final round. She then acted in shows like Big Time Rush, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and HBO's Ballers. Olivia Olson made her debut in Love Actually as Joanna, the aspiring pop singer who belts Mariah Carey and steals Sam's heart. These days, Olson is best known as a voiceover artist for hit shows like Phineas and Ferb and as the iconic Marceline the Vampire Queen on Adventure Time, a role which she reprises in the the new Max limited series Fionna and Cake. Tarver and Olson have both grown up to singer-songwriters as well. Tarver will start a headlining tour on Sept. 6 (dates below) with a new album in the works. Her song “What Makes A Life Good?” recently played in the series finale of The Other Two, which costarred her brother Drew Tarver. Olson is working on a new album while she helps write the Phineas and Ferb reboot for Disney. After getting her start performing in prestigious talent competitions as a child in Glennville, Georgia, Katelyn moved to Los Angeles at the age of 19 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She promptly made her TV debut with a recurring role on Nickelodeon's Big Time Rush, then began independently releasing her music while penning songs for other artists. In 2014 she experienced a major breakthrough when “Crazy Stupid Love” (a song she'd co-written for British pop star Cheryl) shot to #1 on the UK Singles Chart. Since then, Katelyn's released a number of singles and EPs, recurred on shows like The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Ballers, and her latest album Subject to Change will be released very soon, in early November! Kristinia DeBarge steps Behind The Rope. Checking in from her home in Vegas, Kristinia is here to tell it all. Growing up with a famous father, James DeBarge of the group DeBarge, is her Dad, Kristinia is no stranger to the limelight. We discuss what it was like to grow up with a Dad in the business whose mega hit “Rhythm of The Night” is still played everywhere today. Her Dad was also married to Janet Jackson in the 80’s, yes Janet Jackson. Please discuss. She does. Being around music from a young age, it is no surprise Kristinia decided to pursue music as a career. Part of that pursuit included being a contestant on American Juniors in 2003, the spin off American Idol for kids. We discuss her interaction with host Ryan Seacrest plus judges Debbie Gibson, Justin Guarini and Gladys Knight and fellow soon to be famous contestants Keke Palmer and Lucy Hale. We also discuss the ‘backstage” politics between “stage moms” and just how real is a show like American Idol, or in this case, American Juniors. After American Juniors, Kristinia knew that music was for her and she began a several year long working relationship with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. That relationship led to her first record deal. As a result of that record deal, she opened for Britney Spears on the 2009 Circus Tour. O-M-F-G. Kristinia discusses not only what it was like to open for one of Pop’s most successful acts of all times, but what Britney was like at the time considering it was directly after for infamous “meltdown” period, what the atmosphere as like backstage, the interactions between Britney and her Dad and where she stands today on the “Free Britney” Movement. They discuss USTA's role in college tennis and what they are currently doing to preserve the College Tennis Pathway for US Junior Tennis Players. Tim talks about how USTA has developed 5 "buckets" around college tennis: Relevancy, Pathway, Education, Competition & Events, and Partnerships. He delves into each of the 5 areas throughout the podcast, explaining how USTA is creating opportunities for players, parents, coaches, and the universities themselves. In addition, Tim explains USTA's commitment to working with both the ITA and the NCAA to save college tennis even as over 60 programs have been cut so far in 2020. That commitment includes a grant program to assist college coaches in recruiting US players within their local region, hopefully creating more opportunities for American Juniors to find spots on college tennis rosters. In 2009, DeBarge signed a contract with the Island Records department Sodapop, releasing her debut album, Exposed, in July of the same year. The first single, "Goodbye", reached the top 20 in the US and Canada.
