We're off to see the 2024 movie adaptation of Act One of the 2003 hit Broadway musical based on the 1995 bestselling book by Gregory Maguire, based on the 1939 film, based on the 1900 novel by L. Frank Baum. Telling the origin story of the witches of Oz, this Jon M. Chu-directed film saw Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande step into the roles made famous on stage by Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth. Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, Peter Dinklage, and Jeff Goldblum round out the cast of one of the biggest films of the past year. It brought in over $750 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Oz film, the highest-grossing musical film adaptation, and the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2024. It scored ten Oscar noms, including Best Picture, and won Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. A sequel, adapting Act Two of the show, is scheduled for release later this year. But does this musical prequel defy gravity, or does it hit a few flat notes? Join us as we throw a bucket of cold water on Wicked! It's just Kevin and Lauren this week and they cover Idina Menzel's new broadway show, Redwood, the "horror" film, Presence, Nicole Kidman's Holland, and the Netflix/AMC animated series Pantheon. The show kicks off with Lauren reviewing Idina Menzel's return to Broadway with Redwood. It's a spin on the story of a woman who protested logging by living in a redwood tree for over 700 days. While taking some of those themes, this is really the story of a woman dealing with the loss of her son and finding herself. While boasting a small cast of 5 and no truye standout songs, it's still a solid show with a beautiful set and, of course, Idina Menzel. After a quick discussion about Wicked, Kevin takes over and talks about the film Presence, which is available for rent or purchase on digital as of right now. It's a haunted house story from the perspective of the haunting entity. Rather then being a horror film (despite being billed as one), it's the tale of a family in turmoil and the secrets they keep from each other. It's not a must watch, but if you see it available on a streaming platform soon, it's worth checking out. As the show spirals, it goes back to Lauren to discuss the latest less than stellar outing from Nicole Kidman, Holland. It's a relatively unexciting take on a murder mystery that is far less steamy than it's trailers would have you believe. In the end, it's just a story with a couple of almost interesting twists that make it serviceable. Kevin closes the show with the animated series, Presence, on Netflix. It has a similar plot device to Severance where people are separated from themselves, in this case by having their minds digitally uploaded to a companies server. the problem is, they become trapped there. So much like the Innies in Severance, the trapped folks begin to fight their way out. The story is told from the point of view of two teenagers. One is the daughter of one of these Uploaded Intelligences and the other is the subject of a different type of experiment that plays out over time. So far it's a solid series and worth checking out if you're missing that Severance high. As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 102nd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. I open with a complicated correction that involves my having mixed up Rachel Nichols and Elisabeth Harnois, the shows they were involved in, their connections to Joss Whedon productions and also cross connections through "Criminal Minds." This set covers discs 1826 to 1850 in my Classic Collection. For my Fuzzy Feature, from Discs 1849 and 1850, comments on the pilot episode of Matt Nix production "The Good Guys," along with my 12th ever "VideoFuzzy the Video" posted here: https://youtu.be/aT5HIqRBS50 I also traced Cross Connections turning up in this collection for Golden Threads Michael O'Neill and Stephen Weber, plus Tahmon Penniket, William B. Davis, Gary Anthony Williams, Erica Gimpel, Ally Walker, Marion Ross, Chrisotpher Lloyd, Scott Bakula, Fred Willard, Swoosie Kurtz, Allison Janney, Terry O'Quinn, Marilyn Manson, Mitch Pileggi, Jon Waters, Bob Clendinen, Neil Patrick Harris, Molly Shannon, John Michael Higgins, Idina Menzel, Judy Greer, Kelsey Grammer, Saul Rubinek, Rachel York, Brent Sexton, Kevin "Repo" Thomas, M.C. Gainey, Kate Vernon and Wade Williams. Plus from "Mid-Century Modern" and elsewhere, I recognize my latest Golden Thread: Bruno Amato. In my Classic Collection, I encountered a few disc errors, suggesting my current DVD player may be wearing out. In the meantime, lots of high-drama season finales in this set. Comments on "Grey's Anatomy," "Fringe," "The Simpsons," "Chuck," "Breaking Bad," and a discussion on the Weeping Angels in "Doctor Who." In Old Business, I track down a musical comedy clip of Martin Short listing celebrities and other notables who refuse to appear on "The Late Show with David Letterman." I'd archived a portion of that one to disc 225 but hadn't seen the first half in perhaps ever until I found it on YouTube in a clip compilation of Martin Short appearances hosted by David Letterman and Paul Schaffer. I posted it here, cued to the 22-minute mark: https://bit.ly/3G52J9e In What I've Been Watching, comments on the Vernal Theatre's outstanding production of "Kiss Me Kate," the second season premiere of "Doctor Who" on Disney+, the first season of "Continuum" and pilot episodes of "Millennium," "Profiler" and "Mid-Century Modern." SPREADING THE WORD! "VideoFuzzy: The Video - Celebrating 100 Episodes!" is posted at https://youtu.be/eWfcCDiOZ2I. Please share as you're able to with anyone you feel might enjoy this production. During my most recent trip to New York, I caught a bunch of Broadway's most recently opened musicals, including REDWOOD at the Nederlander Theatre. Through the kindness of strangers and a new perspective, she will find catharsis—and rediscover the strength to carry on. While large retailers may weather the storm, independent businesses are struggling to absorb rising costs tied to new trade policies. "CBS Mornings" hears from one Los Angeles entrepreneur facing tough choices. Lori Vallow Daybell was in an Arizona court Monday to represent herself in a trial involving the killing of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, in 2019. In her opening statement, Vallow said the evidence will show it was self defense, but prosecutors argued she conspired with her brother to kill Vallow, who had filed for divorce, to collect a $1 million life insurance policy. Two new studies in JAMA Neurology show some diabetes and popular weight loss drugs could help to protect against dementia. CBS News medical contributor Dr. Celine Gounder joins "CBS Mornings" to explain what researchers found. The Florida Gators won their first NCAA basketball title since 2007. Will Richard, who hit four three-pointers in the first half, speaks about the big win, what he'll remember from this season and the next steps in his career. Deja Kelly has turned her platform into a personal brand, but she says having the right support system — from a financial advisor to her "momager" — is key to staying grounded in the new NIL economy. With just days to go before liftoff, Gayle King gets a surprise sendoff on "CBS Mornings" from friends and famous faces including Tom Hanks, William Shatner, Bill Nye and Megan Rapinoe. Welcome to Classy Divorces! Today we're getting into the decidedly not-trashy (for the most part) split between The Queen of Broadway, Idina Menzel, and fellow actor Taye Diggs. The pair dated for seven years after meeting as co-stars on the original cast of Rent, then were married for a decade before shocking the world by announcing their separation - and the reasons behind it are complex. We're visiting the Kingdom of Arendelle for a Disney Animated movie based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale “The Snow Queen.” This icy tale makes for perfect pre-holiday viewing, and audiences agreed when they spent over a billion dollars at the box office to see it, making it the highest-grossing film of 2013 and the highest-grossing animated film of all time, at that time. And it wasn't just audiences who felt the magic, critics agreed and the film racked up awards, including two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. With one sequel already out and another on the way, the franchise featuring the voice talents of Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff, and Josh Gad has become a cultural phenomenon - and Disney clearly has no plans to let it go. But will Frozen be enough to melt the heart of musical skeptic Beef, or will Lobster or Rum Daddy panic and run away to the mountains? Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know - at least not until the rating! For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. In possibly our favorite episode yet, Suha and Aidan dive into the cinematic magic of Wicked: Part One, the highly anticipated adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical. They break down the film's vibrant characters, from Cynthia Erivo's fierce and justice-driven Elphaba to Ariana Grande's hilariously preppy Glinda. The duo discusses standout performances, including Michelle Yeoh's Madame Morrible and Bowen Yang's scene-stealing role as Glinda's loyal sidekick. From emotional highlights like Defying Gravity to the nostalgic nods featuring original Broadway stars Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, Suha and Aidan explore how the movie pays homage to its roots while carving its own dazzling path. They share their favorite moments, songs, and critiques (yes, the runtime is a topic!). Whether you're a Wicked superfan or new to Oz's backstory, this episode is a must-listen for all things green and glorious. __ Hosted by: Suha Musa & Aidan Taylor Producer: Shei Yu | Content Writers: Suha Musa & Aidan Taylor I Editorial Review: Saadia Khan I Sound Designer & Editor: Lou Raskin I Immigrantly Theme Music: Simon Hutchinson | Other Music: Epidemic Sound | Cover art design: Josephine Chai | Executive Producer: Saadia Khan Please share the love and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts & Spotify to help more people find us! #167 I recently saw the movie Wicked, and I definitely have thoughts! I am a big fan of the musical, so I wasn't sure that I would be happy with the big screen adaptation. So much can go wrong, and Hollywood has been hit and miss when it comes to musical to movie creations. In this episode I let you know what I think and get into detail about some of the choices actors made. Listen in and see if you agree!Support the show
Jodi, Bridget, and Philip convene prior to Thanksgiving to sneak in a quick episode about a holiday classic (Passover, in this case)--2019's 'Uncut Gems,' directed by brothers Josh and Benny Safdie. Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a jewelry dealer in Manhattan's Diamond District. He and his associates, Demany and Julia (LaKeith Stanfield and Julia Fox), work together to attract a high-profile clientele. Kevin Garnett stars as himself as an interested buyer of a mysterious black opal recently obtained by Howard. Set during the 2012 NBA Eastern Conference semi-finals, 'Uncut Gems' imagines an outcome to the series perhaps influenced by Garnett's connection to the opal, as he feels drawn to it. Howard first needs Garnett to win the opal in an auction where he hopes to gain a large enough profit to pay off a gambling debt. When this plan falters due to the opal's poor valuation, Howard sneakily uses the reduced earnings to place a bet on Garnett, now in possession of the opal, hoping KG will score big in game 7. This Rube Goldberg mousetrap of a film sees Howard go from a failed family man pleading with his wife (Idina Menzel), to uptown playboy renting helicopters, to cornered con fending off loan sharks. An episode full of fun, fandom, and frisson where Kate and her guest, Caroline Moss, discuss their hot takes about Broadway musicals, but pepper in plenty of tangents from Babysitter's Club to The Beets (from Doug) and beyond. The majority of this episode is in honor of this weekend's long-awaited premiere of Wicked, and they talk through some Wicked lore, detail their favorite Elphabas, and walk through brain-scratching clips of different pre-approved riffs Elphie can use for her final “battle cry” in Defying Gravity. They also share their mutual fascination with Wicked, the complexities of Broadway casting and performances, and their favorite Broadway shows and songs. From vocal endurance to the atmosphere and experience of live musicals, they cover it all (including sharing their favorite clips from iconic songs). And don't let the theater kid vibes scare you if you aren't into musicals—this episode is for the theater fanatics and the average theater admirer alike. They've got a few pop culture and nostalgic rabbit holes to go down as well. Don't worry, by the end they sing a duet because they cannot help themselves. Enjoy!Enjoy!
