CMA Fest sounds like it was a blast. The 5th season of ‘The Bear' is here. Permits were filed for street closures around Madison Square Garden from July 2-4. For Taylor Swift's wedding? Explain THAT, Bob! It turns out Taylor Swift won't be the first person married at The Garden. A 77-year old man bought too many blue pills. From bar-hopping at CMA Fest with Jason Aldean's band to scheduled high school fights at 3 pm sharp, this episode of Try That in a Small Town is all about chaos, consequences, and the crazy ways we somehow survive it all. The guys kick things off with surgery scars, locked-up backs, and near misses in the garage, then pivot into behind-the-scenes CMA Fest stories, in-ear monitor nightmares, and why late-night stadium sets grind down even veteran players. They talk Morgan Wallen flipping pianos and throwing phones, Taylor Swift's historic new country single tied to Toy Story 5, and how modern country production has become so “perfect” it's almost personality-free. Things get heavier when they unpack the Carmelo Anthony/Austin Metcalf stabbing at a track meet, race narratives in the media, and what real self-defense is—and isn't—when someone pulls a knife. They contrast that with a powerful small-town hero story: a Gwinnett County officer who saves a 7-year-old launched through a windshield. In classic TTIAST fashion, the crew rounds it out with songwriting pet peeves, delusional DMs from strangers wanting co-writes and video calls, bullying stories that still haunt them, and how golf, TV binges, and pizza reviews are getting them through recovery. 01:30 Surgeries, brutal bruises, allergic reactions to bandages and upcoming product bans in Tennessee 04:40 Locked-up back on the toilet, crawling across the house and day-three recovery status 06:30 Surviving CMA Fest: bar crawl sets, in-ear monitor disasters and playing blind on stage 09:45 Bar energy vs stadium distance and podcast fans popping up at shows 11:15 Late-night stadium headlining slot, fried fans, and what TV does to show times 14:00 Original Glory and Patriot Mobile sponsor segments 15:10 Learning piano one-handed after surgery, Jingle Bells, and mining TV shows for song ideas 17:50 TV recs: Life After Lockup, The Invisible Pilot, and Cape Fear reboot 20:20 NBA and Stanley Cup talk: Knicks' huge comeback, Wembanyama, and why some tuned out the NBA 22:45 Trump at the Garden, celebrity courtside culture, and politics vs respect for the office 24:40 Taylor Swift's Toy Story 5 country single and the business behind her return to the format 29:00 Why modern country records all sound the same and the few acts still using their own bands 31:40 Morgan Wallen: “I Ain't Coming Back” lyric love, phone toss, piano flip and Billy Joel's defense 36:30 Wild private plane trip with Morgan Wallen, crass “rich buddies” and what stuck with Kalo 38:20 Post-surgery meds, apologizing to Neil, and the nurse/dong/stripper one-liner 41:10 Group shave before a heart cath and hospital humor 42:00 CMA Fest nights with Luke Bryan at his bar, tequila overload and four-day hangovers 44:10 Dipshits of the week: insane video chat requests, song pitches, and social media entitlement 47:00 Fans demanding co-writes and “brain picking” vs actually earning a seat at the table 50:40 The worst song “idea” ever: Cats in the Cradle… but backwards 55:00 Young writers sliding into DMs, asking for writes and coffees, and basic industry etiquette 58:40 Nearly gassing yourself in a closed garage while checking mixes: calling dipshit on yourself 1:01:40 Drone-rescue story: Apache down, surviving in the water and next-level military tech 1:05:30 Golf injuries, steroids on the road, and fighting to stay in playing shape 1:07:10 The Carmelo Anthony–Austin Metcalf stabbing: facts, sentencing and race narratives 1:12:10 Media framing, self-defense vs murder, and how race gets injected into every case 1:16:00 Scheduled school fights at the park, bus brawls and why nobody brought knives back then 1:19:40 Getting drilled in the face for knocking a kid's basketball away: lesson learned 1:20:30 One cold jab to the nose and understanding when you've gone too far 1:22:10 The bully who made you fast: getting wrecked in pickup football and later asking for tickets 1:24:20 Small Town Big Story: Officer Ariana James saves a 7-year-old thrown from a truck in Gwinnett County 1:26:10 Closing: Peacemaker Coffee, shoutout to listener Ed, scheduled fights and listener call-to-action ______________________________________________________________________________________________SPONSORS: The Try That in a Small Town Podcast is powered by e|spaces!Redefining Coworking - Exceptional Office Space for Every BusinessBook a tour today at espaces.comFrom the Patriot Mobile studios:Don't get fooled by other cellular providers pretending to share your values or have the same coverage. The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry

Nashville during CMA Fest is a choose-your-own-adventure where every decision has a cost: stand in a line, catch a set, make a meeting, or follow a last-minute invite that turns into the best story of the week. We take you with us from the “question of the day” energy to the real CMA Fest play-by-play, including what it's like navigating Broadway crowds, building a schedule with the CMA Fest app, and still getting surprised by who walks into the room.We start strong with a private party at Third and Lindsley, where Daryl Worley brings the kind of storytelling and fan connection that reminds you why live country music still hits different. From there, we shift into the music industry side of Nashville with a studio visit to Matt McClure, a listen to Dolby Atmos, and a peek at how modern production can make a song feel immersive and physical. If you love gear, mixing, and how records get made, this part is for you.At Fanfare X in Music City Center, we reconnect with artists we've interviewed and talk about the meet and greet grind, the personalities that shine in person, and the frustrating reality that you can miss official performances when the weekend fills up with commitments. Then it's off to The Local for a writers round featuring Josie Sal, followed by Trey Calloway lighting up the night with a full-band set that proves why Nashville musicians are built different. We wrap with Saturday honky tonk chaos, a standout fiddle moment at Legends Corner, studio talk with Bob Bullock, and the practical details for watching CMA Fest on TV and planning next year.Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review so more fans of CMA Fest, Nashville, country music, and live music stories can find us. Chairman Jason Smith of the House Ways and Means Committee joins the Try That In A Small Town podcast from CMA Fest in Nashville. He breaks down what the powerful Ways and Means Committee actually does and how it touches every American's life through taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, and more. Jason opens up about his small-town Missouri roots, being a fourth-generation farmer, raising white buffalo, and why he still lives in the same rural community he represents. He explains how he took the Ways and Means Committee on the road to 32 states to listen to working families, small businesses, and farmers before writing what he calls the “Big Beautiful Bill” – the largest tax cut in U.S. history, including no tax on tips and overtime. The conversation gets candid on Social Security's future, election integrity and slow vote counts in places like California, and what happens when people lose trust in the system. Jason also shares behind-the-scenes stories of working closely with President Trump – from grilling him for three hours on every line of a 103-title tax bill in the Oval Office to the now-famous “red button” that just orders Diet Coke. Along the way, they talk CMA Fest, Jason's obsession with Reba, the Chiefs, Mahomes vs. Brady, cleaning up Washington, D.C., and why he believes the founding fathers' values are really small-town values. Jason closes with a powerful story of a single mom whose $10,000 tax refund changed her life – and why that's why he still fights for small towns and working families. Brian is hiding from CMA Fest, Ben is back from the British Virgin Islands, and Ted has finally sprung the Egg from a two-month annual. Time for an Information Whiskey episode.Brian gets back in the air after his exam binge with a visit to Full Stop Aviation at Union City, where he meets a 1,000 horsepower Reno racer, then executes a strategic family airstrike to the Virginia mountains and reports that Lucy's autopilot vertical hold now sounds like logging into America Online before giving up entirely. Listener feedback from Chris H. sparks a debate on whether heavy dual time before the private checkride is a red flag or just life happening. Community accomplishments include a PIN code for the DC FRZ, a 9,000 foot density altitude wake turbulence encounter, ten Young Eagles in one day, an LSRM-I sign-off, and fresh grief for everyone hand jamming a Garmin 430 in actual. Then things go deeper. Brian unpacks his new video "Trip. Fall. Succeed." and the photograph he took of a family at Huntsville Executive just two days before they were lost in the Montana Aztec accident. Our first stop on the pizza tour is tonight at Harby’s from 5-7pm! First 300 people get a free slice of pizza! Alan Jackson surprised his niece by calling her to tell her she will be making her Grand Ole Opry debut later this month! She's 14, she's already cutting records in Nashville, and she's learning the music business in real time. We sit down with country recording artist Josie Sal to talk about the jump from “posting covers” to building a true career with a team, a release plan, and the kind of relationships that open doors fast.We get into how she connected with producer Brandon Hood, what it's like walking into a serious studio session with elite Nashville musicians, and why recording full-song takes helps her keep the emotion of a live performance. Josie also shares how she's dialing in her sound, leaning into a classic country and classic rock blend while still staying aware of pop trends. If you're searching for Nashville recording insights, artist development lessons, or how producers shape a young artist's confidence, this conversation delivers practical detail without the fluff. The most powerful thread is what happens offstage: her parents and siblings functioning like a small business team, the reality of online school under constant time pressure, and a vocal health scare with nodules that forced her to cancel shows and get serious about technique. We also talk about staying humble around big names, being present with fans, and how networking really works, including her dad's bold approach to handing out business cards in the wild.Josie closes with what's next: new music, bigger touring goals, songwriter festivals, and plans around CMA Fest. What happens when two sisters team up to build a powerhouse short-term rental brand in two of the most competitive markets in the country? Most people think working with family is a recipe for disaster; Jen and Lauren prove it's actually a competitive advantage. In this episode, I sit down with Jen Stone and Lauren Schmidt, better known as The Airbnb Sisters. We're unpacking how they've grown a thriving portfolio across Nashville and 30A while keeping their standards sky-high and their sisterly bond intact. We talk about:How a single CMA Fest booking turned into a professional management career for Nashville's biggest developersThe strategy behind their iconic pink-themed homes and how they attract high-value group stays like weddings and bachelorette partiesHow Jen transitioned from personal assistant to the engine of the business, managing guest flow and flawless check-insThe story of finding (and fiercely protecting) a standout cleaning crew to maintain five-star standards from hundreds of miles awayA candid look at hosting large groups, and how their branding and screening process attract guests who actually respect the propertyBut this isn't just a story about pretty houses. It's about the evolution of a brand. Jen and Lauren pull back the curtain on the delicate conversations they have with owners about decor budgets and why they now insist on being involved before a home is even furnished. You'll hear how they still run a high-volume business with a personal touch, and my honest take on where they can finally let technology take some of the weight off their shoulders. If you've ever wondered how to turn a "side hustle" into a recognizable brand or how to successfully partner with family, this conversation is your front-row seat. Get ready to learn what it really takes to dominate the high-energy group stay market.HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY POINTS:[01:15] A short introduction about our guests Jen Stone and Lauren Schmidt, and share how they started and grew their short-term rental business together as sisters[05:42] Jen explains how she and Lauren divided roles while building their short-term rental business[07:16] Lauren shares why she brought her sister Jen into the short-term rental business[08:29] Jen explains how social media helped grow their short-term rental business and attract large group bookings[10:54] Lauren outlines their mixed short-term rental business model of ownership and management, and how a long-term developer partnership shaped their portfolio[13:41] Lauren highlights that running properties far from home, like their 30A beach rentals, is very different from managing Nashville homes[14:35] Jen and Lauren discuss managing long-distance properties and finding the right cleaning team [18:19] Lauren and Jen explain how they maintain quality and consistent design across their properties[20:12] Lauren describes managing guest communications themselves and my advice to them about dynamic pricing tool and property management software[26:57] Jen explains that their approach to adding properties is highly selective, focusing first on the relationship and communication style with the owner rather than just the property itself[29:19] How Jen and Lauren use experience and firm standards to guide budgeting and property fit decisions [33:12] Jen and Lauren debunks bachelorette myths and highlights the reality of high-quality group guests [36:00] Lauren and Jen share how they generally don't actively screen bachelorette parties or other group bookings and they treat all guests equally and welcome those who want to book[37:47] The lightning round Golden Nuggets:“It's so important that we've got backups and backups for our backups.”“You can have a beautifully designed property, but if it's poorly run, you're not going to get great reviews.”“If somebody is giving you trouble, kill them with kindness.”Let's Connect:Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/the.airbnb.sisters/ Enjoyed the show? What happens when you feel too rock for country and too country for rock? We put that identity to the test with a rapid-fire breakdown of 35 tracks that blur the lines, from Hardy and The Cadillac Three to CCR, Eric Church, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. We wrestle with what truly makes a crossover—songwriting grit, backbeat, guitar tone, or that undeniable chorus—and call out the picks that earned their place, plus a few that surprised us.Then we hit the headlines shaping the scene. Jason Aldean announces a 2026 Songs About Us Summer Tour and drops fresh tracks. CMA Fest lines up rising voices like Ella Langley and Shaboozey, while big festivals keep the season packed from Panama City Beach to Florida's Gulf Coast. Kane Brown builds a four-story Broadway hub, and Dolly Parton tips her hat to Son of Jolene, proving legacies grow when new artists answer the canon. A Ronnie Milsap tribute reminds us why the Opry remains a North Star.We open the floor to you with a walk-up song throwdown—Jukebox Hero to Tom Sawyer, the Rocky theme to One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer—and share our own entrance anthems. Expect a practical mini-masterclass on intros, tempo, and how to build energy before a first lyric. Charts get their due as we compare mainstream risers and indie breakthroughs, showing why a sticky hook can outlast any hype cycle. The mailbag pulls no punches: are record deals still worth it for mid-level artists, is radio failing because it won't take risks, and what gets more valuable as AI music improves? We make a strong case for live performance, brand voice, and community as the true moat. We also talk long game—the “ten-year town” reality—and how to measure progress without losing heart. If you're chasing better playlists, smarter career moves, or just need a gateway between steel strings and power chords, this one's for you. Country artist Conner Smith joins Brooke Taylor and co-host Pastor Mark Evans on The Upload for his first in-depth conversation since the tragic accident that made headlines this past summer. Known for hits like “I Hate Alabama,” and “Creek Will Rise,” Conner has quickly risen through the country music ranks—touring festivals, releasing his debut album, and building a loyal fanbase. But behind the momentum was a season of profound heartbreak. On the final day of CMA Fest, just one day after taking the Riverfront Stage, Conner was involved in a devastating accident that took a life. In this episode, he opens up with honesty and humility about the grief, trauma, and deep soul-searching that followed, and how the Lord became his anchor when the world around him collapsed. Conner shares how God met him in the shock and silence, the community that rallied around him, and the spiritual “crushing and stripping” that has reshaped him in ways he never expected. He talks about learning to trust God in the valley, surrendering the weight he can’t carry alone, and how the peace he has today is only because of the presence of Christ in the darkest hours. This is a powerful conversation about suffering, healing, and the God who restores what feels shattered beyond repair. Follow The Upload:
