When does being kind become sugarcoating?

Dina Perreault started us off by putting a stake in the sand saying that she sees sugarcoating as misleading, potentially manipulative and condescending. She would much rather you come right out and say exactly what you need to say. Be diplomatic, sure. But sugar coating only belongs on a doughnut.   Don Gleason quoted Dave Ramsey, “To be unclear is to be unkind.” He went further to say he feels people use sugarcoating to avoid saying no when they should and that it is cruel to sugar coat rather than just being diplomatically honest.   Annette Richmond agreed saying she doesn't like sugarcoating either. She would much rather someone be kind, frank and honest.   You can see how often in this conversation all of us are nodding along as someone says, “I would rather you just give it to me straight than sugarcoat it because otherwise I might not get the true message at all.”   Do you think sugarcoating is just a way to avoid conflict?   Connect with the panelists: Annette Richmond: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annetterichmond/ Personal brand U. How do you tell if you're being fished into being vulnerable so they can use it against you?

It is a common narcissistic trait – they get you to trust them so you will feel comfortable sharing your deepest stories and even trauma with them. Then they use that information against you.   I have personal experience with this as my ex-husband was the king of this technique. Something I didn't think to mention during the conversation, if someone is sharing other people's secrets, trauma or stories with you, you can be sure they will share yours with other people. That is a HUGE red flag.   Don Gleason started this conversation off with a story where he was being told it was safe to speak his mind but he KNEW it wasn't. He couldn't get out of the situation and ended up being chewed out for speaking the truth.   Dina Perreault says she watches out for questions that are “leading the witness.” People who are trying to pry out specific information and looking for a fight. Later in the discussion she gave the tip of “okaying” your way out of a conversation. Just start agreeing until they stop talking.   Annette Richmond added that people who are trying to draw you out, almost badgering you for information might be trying to find a way to turn your words against you.   Watch out for people who tell you you are special, better than other people, that you and they have a bond and you can tell them your secrets. I'm not saying those types of bonds don't exist. I am saying they take time to form. Be wary of someone who immediately love bombs you and wants to know the intimate details of your life.   How do you catch people trying to dig for personal details to use against you?   Connect with the panelists: Annette Richmond: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annetterichmond/ Personal brand U. What does it mean to forgive someone?

Quick Hits

I don't think that forgiving is forgetting — that's just not a thing. The human brain does not forget, especially if someone has caused you emotional pain.   But it is possible to let go. You might remember how that person treated you, but you can let it stay in the past.   Of course, that's a lot easier to do when the person genuinely regrets their mistake. If they are clearly going to keep doing the same thing to others, is it then your responsibility to stop them?   And what does it mean to be on the other side of the question? How should you ask someone for forgiveness?   This is not an easy conversation to have, so I was grateful for the thoughtful and openminded guests who had it with me on this edition of Quick Hits: technology specialist Atif Agha; personal brand strategist Annette Richmond; and Simon Coles, founder of the Better Conversations Foundation. I worked with someone once who said that it was his job to provide people with air support so that they could do their jobs.  In other words, the best leaders know that they don't have to be the smartest person in the room. They just have to know how to direct their team's expertise so that everyone moves towards the same goal.  Dr. Mohan Ananda, Jim Comer, JC Glick and Annette Richmond have all advised and worked closely with leaders across a variety of fields and they all agree that great leaders tend to have two core qualities: attentiveness and humility. “It's not just the expertise, it's the integrity of the person. You should be more of a listener rather than telling them what to do.” (Dr. Mohan Ananda) “The most important thing I can say to anyone on the team is, ‘I don't understand. What do you mean?'” (Jim Comer) “Even if I think I know what people do, it's important to say that maybe I don't know what I think I know. Humility is really important.” (JC Glick) “Listen and learn.” (Annette Richmond) Have you either had to lead experts or been the expert with a boss who had no idea what you do? This is such an interesting thought experiment. If you change one thing, does it change everything? If you like where you are now does that make the past, no matter how bad it was, worth it? Somethings are lessons; others might be regrets. Karen Loomis, Stewart Wiggins, Annette Richmond and I had fun thinking about the different options. It's an esoteric topic. We can't change the past. Traveling can be a slog across the board, especially around the holidays. But for plus-size travelers it can also be a dehumanizing experience — navigating stares and glares and accommodations not built for their bodies and comfort. According to the CDC, about 74 percent of adults in the U.S. are overweight, yet this isn't reflected in travel amenities. From airplane seat sizes to hotel towels and furniture to weight restrictions for excursions, the experience of plus-size travelers is often ignored. Travelers like Bay Area native Annette Richmond, who founded the online community Fat Girls Traveling, are creating opportunities for more inclusive travel experiences. We'll talk to Richmond and others about both the harsh and hopeful realities of traveling as a plus-size person.

With major companies extending remote work through next summer because of COVID-19 and countries like Barbados offering year-long visas to U.S. travelers looking to switch their office view to an ocean view, it's understandable to be thinking about picking everything up and relocating for a bit. While international options are limited, living as a digital nomad (spending a few weeks or months in one place before moving on to the next) is still enticing for many. Because it's not as easy as booking a plane ticket and throwing your stuff in storage, we asked two digital nomads—Cheraé Robinson of Tastemakers Africa and Annette Richmond of Fat Girls Traveling—to share their tips and tricks to making it work. (Admittedly, dating can be difficult when you change addresses every 30-or-so days.) Peach, Please! PLUS SIZE COMMUNITY I BODY POSITIVITY I SELF LOVE I FAT POSITIVITY I SIZE ACCEPTANCE

I am so excited to welcome Annette Richmond to the Peach, Please! Podcast! A self-proclaimed Fat Girl, Annette is a staunch supporter of the Body Positive Movement. Traveling is her latest obsession and she has visited 19 countries in the last three years and doesn’t plan on stopping (except for a minor setback called COVID-19). After seeing a lack of diversity and inclusivity in travel marketing and media she created Fat Girls Traveling. The Instagram profile grew into a community of over 19K that has transformed into a movement and made Annette a voice for Fat Travelers. She is also the Editor of Fat Girls Guide, the official blog for Fat Girls Traveling, and a contributor at Ravishly. In this conversation, Annette and I discuss the ever changing relationships with our bodies, the power social media can have in that relationship, and of course, traveling. Annette Richmond loves camp. Not only was she on the Disney show Bug Juice about camp back in the day, but this summer she is starting her own body positive summer camp called Fat Camp. We talk about her experience as a TV star, how camp helps you find comfort in your own skin, and how Micah is more jealous of Annette than any previous guest on the show. Don't waste a minute, take a listen!

I talk with Annette Richmond, fashion stylist, writer, digital nomad and creator of Fat Girls Traveling – a body positive online community for larger women travelers. Not only am I inspired by all the traveling Annette is doing (and jealous of her nomad lifestyle), I'm also deeply inspired by her commitment to promoting a more diverse representation of travelers. Her community is shattering stereotypes and the notion that travel is only for thin people. It also provides a supportive environment where women can share experiences, advice and resources – and encourage each other to travel more. During our conversation Annette shares how she started traveling more herself, why she started Fat Girls Traveling, and great tips for travelers of any size.Visit my website to learn more about me, and say hi on social media: @jetsetlisette.See Full Show NotesEnjoyed this episode?  If so, please rate and review on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen.
