Weekly Shoutout: Friend of the show Alvaro Saar Rios on The Scene Podcast, give it a listen! -- Hi there, Today I am so excited to be arts calling author Effy Redman! (www.effyredman.com) About our guest: Effy Redman's writing investigates the intersection of disability and identity. She has work published in The New York Times, Vice, Ravishly, Chronogram, Berkeley Poetry Review, and Iron Horse Literary Review, among other places. She holds an MFA in Memoir from CUNY: Hunter College, where she received an Honorable Mention for the Helen Gray Cone Fellowship, and a BA in Literature/Drama from Bennington College, where she was an Ellen Knowles Harcourt Scholar and a Bennington Scholar. effyredman.com. All the best! -- SAVING FACE, now available from Vine Leaves Press! https://www.vineleavespress.com/saving-face-by-effy-redman.html ABOUT SAVING FACE: What's in a smile? Or the absent smile? Saving Face is Effy Redman's thought-provoking answer. Born with a rare condition of facial paralysis called Moebius Syndrome, Redman's grit and eye for beauty help her survive childhood bullying and adolescent doldrums. Her physical transformation at age thirteen via plastic surgery eviscerates her concept of image, just in time for her and her family to immigrate from hardscrabble Manchester, England to America's disorientingly scenic upstate New York. Not until diagnosis in young adulthood with bipolar disorder does Redman come out of the closet as a lesbian, finally claiming her most inherent identity. Saving Face is a searing personal tribute to anybody who has ever felt like an outsider. This memoir honors the grace of a face that stands out in a crowd, defying societal beauty norms. Disability meets transcendence, suffering becomes hope, and the individual expands into community. The inability to smile, in Redman's book, lights a window onto the human capacity for redemption. ★★★★★ “This author goes where no other might dare.” Catherine Filloux, award-winning playwright -- Arts Calling is produced by Jaime Alejandro (cruzfolio.com). HOW TO SUPPORT ARTS CALLING: PLEASE CONSIDER LEAVING A REVIEW, OR SHARING THIS EPISODE WITH A FRIEND! About Jessie Kanzer: Jessie Asya Kanzer is the author of Don't Just Sit There, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling, and Living with the Tao Te Ching — a book that combines ancient philosophy to help us live in the midst of current chaos. Born as Asya Bronfman in the Soviet Union, Jessie emigrated to the U.S. at age eight after surviving a holocaust. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Daily News, Wall Street Journal, The Independent, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Ravishly, and Romper. She lives in Dobbs Ferry, New York, with her two daughters and husband. She considers herself an expert in Doing Nothing. In this episode, Adam and Jessie discuss:Expressing your emotionsDon't just sit there, do nothingReinventing your identityFly your freak flagPeace begins with you. Key Takeaways:Journaling, or doing whatever comes naturally to you in terms of expressing your emotions, is a crucial part of getting through your difficulties.Stillness, or just a moment of getting quiet while deep breathing and connecting to the present moment is the key to healing and transformation. There's nothing wrong with creating a new identity or reinventing yourself. Everyone has their own issues and labels that they wish to unlearn from the world, and if changing their identity or unlearning all they believe they know is how they deal, then let them.Allow yourself to not be ashamed of your own wicked personality and stop attempting to conceal some aspects of yourself or your past. People will undoubtedly judge you, but keep in mind that we aren't designed to fit into some preconceived idea of normalcy. If you want peace in the world, start with yourself. Be the change you want to see in the world. Change is inevitable, but taking steps in improving yourself to rise to the occasion and grow as a person will help to spread peace. "Life is always a moving journey, you're not actually done. So just have a good time along the way. Don't stress too much, just chill out more. Don't just sit there, do nothing more." - Jessie Kanzer Connect with Jessie KanzerWebsite: https://jessiekanzer.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jessiekanzer/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JessieAsya/Tiktok: https://www.tiktok.com/@daily_taoTwitter: https://twitter.com/jessiekanzerBook: https://jessiekanzer.com/#pre-order Connect With Adam Weber:Website: https://meditationnotmedicine.com/about/Email: adam@meditationnotmedicine.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/easytomeditate Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meditationnotmedicine/  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPnbji9rDrCfxhY0W8sHL9ABook: Meditation Not Medicine Show notes by Podcastologist: Angelica Rayco.Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. In this episode we discuss: -Her journey into discovering the ancient teachings of del and becoming an author. -There is no end point, there is no point at which we become enlightened and were easy forever more. -It is what goes on the inside that actually really matters. -If there is a big connection between what we present ourselves as and what's going on inside, we get into trouble. -Truth, authenticity, vulnerability are everyone's super power. -Humor and laughing at ourselves is a great skill to have. -Our challenges differ at different points in our lives. -There are also these little struggles, little challenges, that we all deal with in our lives depending on our personality. -When you are connected to yourself, you really take time to listen to yourself. -The more you connect to yourself the more you will be able to ride with your own airborne flow. -Simplify what you want, simplify what you have, simplify your thoughts. -Even in busy times, if you simplify to doing just what is in front of you versus obsessing over all the anxieties around it, that really helps. -Patience is a reminder that things don't happen in our timeline, things happen gradually rather than all of a sudden. -When you can give yourself a break and accept yourself as a person who is not perfect, it becomes so much easier to accept other people in their imperfect reality. -Listen to yourself, tune in to that inner voice. -Listening to our inner voice is harder now because of our go-go technologies. In her book, DON'T JUST SIT THERE, DO NOTHING: Healing, Chilling & Living with the Tao Te Ching Jessie Kanzer shares how perfecting the art of doing nothing can offer wisdom, healing, and grounding–and possibly be the most productive thing you have done in a while. For years, Kanzer felt like a failure, unable to hustle hard enough to “make it,” either as an actress or in the rat race. Her childhood as a Russian immigrant in post-Cold War America heightened her insecurity and threatened her identity, desperate as she was to fit into a culture that was alien at best and hostile at worst. This loss and eventual reclamation of her sense of self sent her on a spiritual journey during which she discovered the Tao Te Ching, which changed everything for her. The Tao taught her that there was power in stillness, and that all struggles come bearing gifts if you know how to recognize them. Her message will connect with listeners desperate to find grounding as we move into a new year with filled with trepidation and no guarantees of a return to normalcy. She is a writer and former reporter and actress. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, Wall Street Journal, The Independent, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Ravishly, and Romper. Jessie lives with her two daughters and husband in Dobbs Ferry, NY. During my interview with Jessie, you will learn: * How to trust your intuition and inner voice whenever doubts creep in * How losing sight of your true identity can be a gift (as long as you find it again) * How the Tao can cure you of perfectionism and people-pleasing tendencies * Why it's important to continue to embrace stillness, even amidst a push to return to “normal” following the pandemic * The Tao's wisdom on parenting, especially how the act of letting go can be the ultimate form of love * How the Tao can teach you to value yourself and not give your power away in romantic relationships. In a culture that insists on constant motion and self-improvement, the Tao Te Ching's philosophy reminds us that there's power in slowing down and making room for stillness in our lives. Don't Just Sit There, Do Nothing (now available where books are sold) offers practical actionable insights on incorporating its wisdom into your everyday life. This is a MUST listen!  Jessie Kanzer talks about her new book coming out March 1st, 2022 "Don't Just Sit There, Do Nothing: Healing, Chilling, and Living with the Tao Te Ching".  She brings amazing insight into the foundation of health and wellbeing. And she has one of THE BEST presentations of "The Way" - The Tao Te Ching.  I was so excited to read this book. I hope you find that it resonates with you as Jessie is an incredible light for many of us who need to connect with our power and innate wisdom to heal.  You can find the book and lots of goodies on her website at www.jessiekanzer.com Get the book and when you're done write a review, as she has so much to share with the world!! More about Jessie Kanzer: Jessie was born in the Soviet Union as Asya Bronfman—a little Jewish girl living in a communal apartment with four families, one toilet, and a rickety old bathtub in the middle of the kitchen. Her grandparents had survived the Holocaust and her parents continued to struggle under anti-Semitic policies. They sought asylum in the U.S., waiting in Italy and in Austria, and finally made it to Brooklyn in 1989. As an 8-year-old refugee who only spoke Russian, Jessie (who was still “Asya” then) yearned to fit in. She changed her name and much about herself. Later though, she experienced depression, an eating disorder, and all sorts of existential problems. She pursued Hollywood fame, men, and the American Dream, but always fell short. Until she stopped. In figuring out how to better herself and her life, Jessie picked up a bucket-full of tools that she now shares with others—including the Tao Te Ching, which she's studied for years and which inspired her upcoming book. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, Wall Street Journal, The Independent, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Ravishly, and Romper. Do you ever feel like you need a break from the constant go, go, go? We know we do. And what's better than taking a break to do nothing? It sounds counterproductive, but when was the last time you just sat around and let your mind wander? Probably not recently, if at all. We're so busy nowadays that taking a moment for ourselves is a rarity. But it's so important. So on this episode, we are joined by Jessie Kanzer to discuss her new book, The Art of Doing Nothing, what that actually entails, how her book parallels the “Great Resignation”, the pandemic, and share some mindset tips to combat overwhelm. You are going to end this episode with a new mindset and the inspiration to get you out of that rut you're in! Get ready to relax and de-stress! Jessie Kanzer was born in the former soviet union. She set out on a spiritual search after losing everything and starting over. Traveled to various countries at eight years old before coming to the United States. She bottled up and buried emotions at an early age. This soon manifested into an eating disorder. She discusses how she tried to change and reinvent herself and it didn't work. She pushed on and graduated from college in an area she could have cared less about, but Summa Cume Laude of course.  Her turning point…a major car accident. She picked up the Tao Te Ching from her bedside table. An ancient Chinese philosophy and reinvented herself following the car accident.  Jessie discusses how hitting rock bottom is an opportunity to begin again. She tells her story, invites us to read her book, and will leave you feeling hopeful and inspired to take on that next challenge or to simply navigate this chaotic time we all find ourselves in.  Discussed in this episode: The Great Resignation. How her book is helping people through a period of major change in their lives. What is the Tao Te Ching? Jessie puts this book into perspective and makes it relevant to moms in the modern-day who need help with the day-to-day overwhelm and stress.  Mindset shift best practices.  Jessie's childhood in the Soviet Union and the parallel to the hustle culture we live in today.  The lessons the pandemic has taught us. Leveling up and accomplishing goals. How to change from within to effect change in society.  How Jessie's new book fits the mold of Christianity and other religions.  We are bringing various angles, ideas, and takeaways to this week's episode. We want to hear from you! Tell us what you liked, didn't like, or maybe what you would like us to continue in a future episode. Gen Xers and young Baby Boomers can be nostalgic about the freedoms of growing up in the 1970s. But there was a darker side to that era, too, especially for girls. Feminism was on the ascent, but the sexual revolution was moving even faster, bringing profound changes to behavioral norms and assumptions about pleasure and consent. In her new memoir, The Big Hurt, Erika Schickel recalls a childhood that was both magical and ruinous, one in which she played freely on the streets of her Manhattan neighborhood but, at the same time, attended a private school where (with the blessing of the headmaster) Hollywood casting agents scouted for girls to audition for the role of a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby (incidentally, Jeffrey Epstein was teaching math at this school at the time). As a teen at boarding school, Erika was seduced by a male teacher and asked by the administration to leave before graduation. Her mother, meanwhile, applauded the relationship and Erika even briefly lived with the teacher before heading off to college. Decades later, while living the life of a conventional married mom in Los Angeles, Erika found herself embroiled in an obsessive affair with the legendary crime writer James Ellroy, a man who was himself damaged by the violence and tragedy of his youth. Erika spoke to Meghan about the book and the revelations that came to her over the more than ten years it took her to write it. During those years, the #MeToo movement came along, further complicating Erika's story while making it all the more relevant. Guest Bio: Erika Schickel is the author the memoir The Big Hurt (Hachette Books, 2021) and You're Not the Boss of Me: Adventures of a Modern Mom (Kensington Books, 2007).
