Dina Perreault started us off by putting a stake in the sand saying that she sees sugarcoating as misleading, potentially manipulative and condescending. She would much rather you come right out and say exactly what you need to say. Be diplomatic, sure. But sugar coating only belongs on a doughnut.   Don Gleason quoted Dave Ramsey, “To be unclear is to be unkind.” He went further to say he feels people use sugarcoating to avoid saying no when they should and that it is cruel to sugar coat rather than just being diplomatically honest.   Annette Richmond agreed saying she doesn't like sugarcoating either. She would much rather someone be kind, frank and honest.   You can see how often in this conversation all of us are nodding along as someone says, “I would rather you just give it to me straight than sugarcoat it because otherwise I might not get the true message at all.”   Do you think sugarcoating is just a way to avoid conflict?   Connect with the panelists: Annette Richmond: https://www.linkedin.com/in/annetterichmond/ Personal brand U. Bist du schon im Krisenmodus? In today's episode, we invited Robb Kelly. He works with people going through, treating addiction problems to the actual root cause and not the symptoms. He's gone to the ups and downs. Alcoholism crippled him and set him in a place where he was homeless in the streets of Manchester, England. At one point, Robb found the courage to save himself, and then after he saved himself, he's had this commitment to protecting other people through many things he does as a CEO. [4:48] Why should we listen to you? Two things, the cool accent, and then catching me on my favorite topic, helping people. Everybody knows somebody who suffers from addiction. [5:58] Addiction It's more on the brain science of the addiction, and I knew there was something wrong somewhere because I literally couldn't stop drinking. Seeing a doctor who would send me to a 12-step room wasn't good enough for me. So, I got a Ph.D. in psychology and a Ph.D. in behavioral science. It became fascinating to me, and then it became a challenge to me. [8:10] What did you learn, and how did you figure the best way to apply it? The first thing I didn't know was alcoholics are born. They're not made. So you can't drink yourself into becoming an alcoholic. It's impossible. Predisposition, trace it back in your family, and it will be there. [9:09] Neuroplasticity is a way of changes like molding the brain to what I want it to be. So what happens is through the therapy that you get here, we have more self-care neural pathways, and you self-sabotage your paths. [10:57] For people, they don't think that they're good enough. Secondly, I don't even believe they can achieve that. You can achieve anything you want to do. This mindset is not just set for everybody. Everybody, in my opinion, is born with a million-dollar mind. [12:17] Addicted Minds They call me the Gordon Ramsay of addiction because I will curse at you in the office. And if you're not pulling your weight, I will throw you out. You are going to do this deal, or you're not. You're in, or you're out. That's the deal with me. I don't answer to nobody. If you don't like it, you can leave. If you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing, you can leave, or we will fire you. [14:03] Is everyone's drawn to that, or a select kind of person can handle that? We've had a few thousand women on board, and they're direct. They want to get it done. We're assessing bringing anybody on. We turned down many guys, or they've decided not to come because of my audacity. Sugarcoating this stuff kills people. [15:25] Would you say that life for you seems easier now than it did back then? That's 100% the truth. Everything I've got, I've fought for. But then you learn how to fight mentally, psychologically, physically as you grow up around these tough people. When you develop the mind, you become an unstoppable force, and there's nothing I can't do. You've got to get serious about yourself and go back and do the work on yourself. [19:21] Fostering connection There are loads of methods for doing that. But you have to look at it. First, if your phone takes you away from your family or friends, there may be a problem. But there are safer addictions like going to the gym, eating healthfully, grooming yourself, especially the younger generation. I think that that works well, and they can connect with that. [20:23] Is there a thin line between addiction and habits? There's a fine line. Alcoholism as a whole is the only self-diagnosed illness in the world. [27:28] What promise did God make to the world when He created you? The promise he gave was for those who suffer Isaiah 61. I'm not a religious guy, but there's a whole new story around that. Isaiah 61 is brought me into this world to heal the sick and give good news to their families. That's what he did. He just took a few years to make me that sharp tool that I can go out, but that's a walk in God's grace. I'm a spiritual guy. I believe He directs me every second of the way, and his timing is impeccable. Key Quotes [9:49-9:51] “Don't tell me you can't do anything because you can.” [11:08-11:13] “Everybody, in my opinion, is born with a million-dollar mind.” [11:17-11:19] “ Show me your friends, I'll show you a future.” [17:07-17:09] “You need to hear stuff from other people to encourage.” Learn more about Robb Kelly on: Website: https://robbkelly.com/

Business Lunch
The Importance of Direct Communication with Roland Frasier and Ryan Deiss

Business Lunch

A good leader communicates directly and truthfully without sugarcoating.   In today's episode, co-hosts Roland Frasier and Ryan Deiss recount a recent leadership meeting of their central holding company, Scalable Equity. According to Ryan, the meeting was going “fine” until Roland “started yelling at this one guy out of nowhere.” Roland's rendition of what happened is nothing like Ryan's.   These differing perspectives caused Roland and Ryan to reevaluate things and ask some important questions like: How do you yell at people when they're screwing up? How do you talk to people at an executive leadership level vs. your subordinates? Do we need to worry about people's feelings? What's the best way to deliver uncomfortable truths?   Listen in as they tackle a hard topic head-on.   Two Sides to the Same Story Ryan gives his version of the leadership meeting first. Things were going fine. They were talking over their priorities. Then Roland started yelling about how they had goals that didn't get met, projects that didn't get finished on time. He was frustrated and let his feelings be known. Ryan said they were all frustrated, but he was still surprised that Roland came in with “guns blazing.”   Roland says Ryan's characterization isn't accurate. He felt like the meeting was all BS. Everyone was being inauthentic and pretending to be this perfect image. He was surprised that people were faking fine.   From Roland's point of view, it started with looking at one particular company's financials. They received PPP money, and have a line of credit. The company had missed its goals by a fair amount, and the current month was tracking even worse. They'd made a lot of changes, but they were using PPP money that was supposed to be sacrosanct.    Roland says there had been rumors of people complaining about variable comp, and they needed to understand they were underperforming. A company called DigitalMarketer shouldn't have a struggling marketing department.  He loves them all, but they need to fix this, and the leadership team is responsible.   He says he wasn't picking on one guy. He was talking to everyone. (He called this person after the meeting to clear things up.)    Sugarcoating vs. Being Real Roland and Ryan discuss the whole “praise in public, reprimand in private” concept. They agree that yes, you need to be careful not to damage someone reputationally by coming down on them hard in front of others. But, in a leadership meeting, you need to be able to talk directly. It's tempting to sugarcoat, but the longer you go without saying what you need to say, the harder it gets.    If you're going to talk to a person about their performance (or lack of), that should be done in private. But when you're talking about the company and saying, “Here's where we're falling down and here's where we stand as a consequence of that, and that can't continue and we all need to pull together and figure out how we're going to help correct that,” you've got to be able to have that conversation with your leadership team. They don't need to be beat up on or singled out, but they need to hear the truth and where the collective leadership is failing.   Roland said he didn't make an emotional outburst; he delivered the facts intentionally in the way he thought would convey the biggest impact. He thought about the words he was using and chose to say “marketing” instead of a person's name.   Ryan said he wished he would have known ahead of time that Roland was going to bring it up, so he could have been prepared. But he realizes that a leadership meeting is literally for discussing problems. If they're not going to meet for real talk, then why are they even meeting?    He says a leadership team can't be effective unless they can piss each other off and still move on from that. If you're hyper-obsessed with not hurting people's feelings, how will you ever get good work done?   From This Point Forward In the past, Roland would have said, “Screw those people if they don't get it. I don't care if their feelings are hurt.” But Ryan and Richard have taught him a lot about being focused on culture. He now sees the importance of hearing people and apologizing and constructive criticism.   From now on, Roland is going to talk to Richard and Ryan ahead of the meeting, then bring up negative things by saying, “I've talked to Richard and Ryan, and we've agreed this needs to be addressed.”   The company will go so much further so much faster and the praise will mean so much more when everyone is willing to be constructively critical of themselves. They need to know they're all there to improve the company and each other. Be honest when things are great, and be honest when things aren't going so well.    Let's tie a bow on this, be done with it, and get back to making money.   OUR PARTNERS: Scalable Impact Live (November 2-3, 2021) Get a free proposal from Conversion Fanatics Get 3% cash back on your ad spend with AdCard PodBean, your all-in-one podcasting solution

The latest episode of The New CISO features not one, but two guests! Chuck Markarian and Sean Murphy sit down to discuss the inner struggles of networking, establishing a risk council within your company and dealing with high-risk situations. Background Chuck Markarian is the CISO at Paccar. He has been with the company for 16 years and has served in a CISO role for almost five years, focusing on security risk assessment and project management. Sean Murphy is the CISO at BECU, the third largest credit union in the country. Sean has been in his role for about two years. He previously served in the Air Force for 21 years before jumping into the financial services sector. Networking as an Introvert Networking in itself can be intimidating, but when you’re an introvert, it’s more nerve-wracking. Chuck and Sean discuss how to calm the nerves and take that first step at a networking event, which ironically is how the duo ended up becoming friends. The episode discusses translating this advice into navigating in a virtual space as networking events continue to be held online. Starting a Risk Council The guys talk about how to socialize a risk council and get one established. The main focus is catching an employee’s interest in that initial email. This episode goes through different questions to ask your team members that will lead them to recognize what areas interest them the most and what areas pose the greatest concern. The bottom line: ask the right kind of questions that let employees find out what is important to them and discuss responses to situations when dealing with risk management. Then, develop a plan of attack. Dealing with High-Risk Situations High-risk situations and security issues are bound to happen. The largest differentiator is how you react to it. The focus quickly goes to “How could this happen?” when the shift needs to be on “How quickly can we get things back to normal?” Sean and Chuck discuss navigating high-risk situations with executives based on your current relationship with them, and how the CISO is often not the sole person to blame when something goes wrong in the cyber security realm. Rose-Colored Glasses Some things unintentionally get sugarcoated by organizations, where reports get tweaked as they go further up the chain. The verdict? CISOs are not doing the organization any justice if they are trying to spin the news. In turn, a CISO could find themselves without a job if something goes wrong and the company was not provided with accurate data and objectives. You’re not doing the org any justice if you’re trying to spin the news, you're not protecting your job. Always communicate the message as you see it.   Links Chuck Markarian - LinkedIn Sean Murphy - LinkedIn Exabeam Podcasts

What a heartbreaking incident for Braves and baseball fans alike. 2019 NL Rookie of the Year runner-up and Braves ace, Mike Soroka's, already short season was bookmarked by a season-ending Achilles injury against the Mets on Monday. DOB and EOF detail the gut-wrenching scene from the intraleague contest (:30) and discuss the potential future implications for the newly 23-year-old and the Braves. The duo then react to GM Alex Anthopoulos' comments on Soroka's injury (13:00), and the odds of a trade occurring (14:15). Could the 29-year-old former starter, Tyler Matzek, be the unassuming fill-in, and make his first foray back into a starting rotation since 2015 (22:15)? What did Anthopoulos say to Soroka in the locker room after the matter (31:45), and how did the former Blue Jays General Manager handle a similar situation in Toronto (34:00)? David and Eric chat about the paralleled drawn by Freddie Freeman between Soroka's and ex-hurler Jason Grilli's injury (39:00). To wrap, the guys examine Soroka's historic start to his career, and postulate how the rotation will shape up (44:30). The guys engage tough listener questions about Old Testament violence, like "Aren't you just sugarcoating genocide?" They also explore how modern political and geo-political biases tend to influence our interpretation of tough biblical passages. Is there a right or left leaning way of reading Joshua? Do we sometimes project our understanding of the modern day Israeli-Palestinian conflict back onto the book of Joshua? Are we so far away from the Holocaust that we are beginning to forget some important lessons about how to speak about the Jewish people's role in Scripture?

Ask any parent, grandparent, teacher, babysitter, person with eyes: when a child eats too much sugar, they go bananas with hyperactivity. It's obvious -- literally the one thing everybody agrees with. Except it's just not true. There is no scientific evidence - and never has been - that kids who eat too much sugar behave any differently afterwards than if they had no sugar. So what's going on? How could this universal "truth" be, well, untrue? Hear the evidence on this week's episode.
