How to master “natural” leadership, with Alisa Cohn Impostor syndrome is the feeling that you don't belong somewhere — such as a prestigious school or high-performing job — because of the false belief that you aren't as smart, capable, or experienced as your colleagues. Although it's very common for new CEOs and senior leaders to face self-doubt and insecurity daily in their role, these feelings can be overcome. Remember that leadership is an unnatural act. We don't normally give feedback to our friends, praise people we don't have confidence in, and repeat ourselves over and over. But these skills can be learned. We are a society of goal-setters. If you're not setting and achieving goals, you're not living your best life. Or so we're told. And goals do have their place. The thing is that goals (alone) are not enough to really move us forward in the ways that matter most. In order to that, they have to be woven into a larger fabric that also includes our core values. In this episode, we talk about how to do that.Takeaways:A goal often involves achieving a certain result or crossing a certain finish line. But goals often lose their power to motivate us as soon as we achieve them.An objective goes beyond “I want to achieve this” more into the territory of “this is who and how I want to be.”Think about what objective or identity each of your goals contributes to. This ensures that even short-term achievements are connected to long-term objectives. Listening to podcasts does not create change. You have to actually put these insights and tools to work in your own life.Mentioned:Interested in having Monica present at your next live or virtual event?  Learn more. ★ Support this podcast ★

Listeners, this is a fantastic article, but when it comes to Mattie Kahn's writing, that's just what one comes to expect when it comes to her. Mattie is one of the most published writers today, and after working full-time at outlets like Elle and Glamour, she's now a full-time freelance writer and has written for literally every publication you can dream of: Vogue, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper's Bazaar, Vanity Fair, Conde Nast Traveler, Time, The Atlantic, Town & Country, New York Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Seventeen, I could go on and on. Today Mattie and I talk about the secrets to a good celebrity interview, what she wishes she knew before going freelance, how telling stories of powerful women and girls is a running theme throughout her work, and about her first book, Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions, which came out in June 2023. The book is about teenage girls involved in activist work and, as the book description reads, is “the untold story of the people who have helped spark America's most transformative social movements throughout history: teenage girls.” Mattie is a Harvard graduate and, in addition to all of the publications she writes for and her book, she also has a Substack called “Things I Ask My Mother.” Mattie Kahn is very deservedly one of my Women in Power.   By Mattie Kahn: Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions “Sharon Stone Has Found Her Limit” for InStyle “Things I Ask My Mother” Substack   + another day of extra picks by female authors! What's the best way to motivate yourself? Through her research, Gretchen Rubin came up with The Four Tendencies, four different ways people respond to internally and / or externally motivation. Sammie for example, is an upholder, and will often complete a task if she decides to do it or if someone like her boss needs her to do it. Michelle, a rebel, listens to know one, including herself. Obligers respond to external motivation and suffer if they have to hold themselves accountable. Questioners need to know they why behind the task, and that will determine whether or not they do something.  Sammie and Michelle loved revisiting this fan favorite episode. At the time of this original recording Gretchen was promoting her then new book The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better. I recently interviewed Gretchen again for a forthcoming book and that conversation will be released soon. However, speaking to her reminded me of how insightful and helpful this talk was. In the Four Tendencies, Gretchen breaks down setting and meeting inner and outer expectations and creating good habits to have greater happiness. I really enjoyed this talk and wanted to share it with everyone in the event that you missed it the first time and get you excited for our new conversation that I will be posting in the coming weeks.  Gretchen Rubin is the author of several books, including the blockbuster New York Times bestsellers, Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home.
