“It hurts me […] when you're so awesome, but you just can't convey your awesomeness in a bite-sized package that sells you best […] because you want to add all these albatrosses around your neck with dead-weight words that don't do anything or paint a colorful picture.” That's verbatim from today's lesson on Why You Fail Job Interviews and the Best Way to Fix it (CAAR). Stephanie's Career Journey Early Interests and Education: Stephanie Manka, originally known as Stephanie Shuttler, began her academic journey with a major in biology, initially considering a career in medicine as a backup to her interest in acting. She discovered her passion for wildlife biology during a study abroad program in Africa, which opened her eyes to the possibility of a career in wildlife conservation. Academic Path: Stephanie pursued her PhD focusing on forest elephants and animal behavior, utilizing non-invasive genetics for her research. After completing her PhD, she undertook two postdoctoral positions, one of which lasted five years in Raleigh, North Carolina, within the research triangle. Transition to Science Communication: While working at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Stephanie developed a love for science communication, blogging about her experiences and the challenges of the job market in wildlife biology. She realized that her research, while valuable, often went unnoticed in academic journals and sought to make a more direct impact through communication and mentoring. Establishing Her Business: In April 2020, Stephanie launched her own business, focusing on career mentoring and science communication. She began offering group programs and writing a book, leveraging her experiences to help others navigate the competitive job market in wildlife conservation. Current Focus: Stephanie now combines science communication with career mentoring, helping aspiring wildlife professionals improve their job applications and gain clarity on their career paths. She emphasizes the importance of networking, gaining relevant experience, and crafting strong job applications tailored to specific roles. Advice from Stephanie Clarity and Strategy: Identify what you truly want to do in your career. Having a clear goal helps in targeting the right opportunities and experiences. Build Experience: Gain a variety of experiences, especially those that align closely with your career goals. This may involve taking on multiple jobs or internships. Networking: Build and maintain a professional network. Connections can lead to job opportunities and valuable insights into the field. Strong Job Applications: Focus on writing compelling job applications. Many candidates struggle with this, often writing generic applications that do not highlight their unique experiences and skills. Invest in Yourself: Consider investing in career coaching or mentoring programs. This investment can lead to greater accountability and motivation, ultimately enhancing your chances of success. Resilience and Dedication: Persistence is key. The job market can be competitive, but with dedication and the right strategy, success is achievable. I spent more time coming up with complete title of The Zebra Code: A Step-By-Step Guide to Mastering Career Skills That Make You a Standout Professional than writing the entire book. 7 months for the title. 6 months to write the entire book (really 5, because I spent a month polishing). True story. Why? I wanted to get in… Something unique (and avoid generic leadership-y titles like The Leadership Code yawn). Short main title (2-3 words only). A metaphor people will understand. Ability to coin, copyright, unique URL for the title, etc. Ongoing books in a series (for future offsprings). Tell them what's inside (of course). Demonstrate there's a framework (but didn't want to be wordy). Make a promise as to what will happen when they read the book. Be specific about reader avatar (title needed to include something about the “who”). So, it shakes out… Code = Takes care of the item on methodology inside. Guide = It IS a guide, but I could have used the word “system” here instead. Mastering the Career Skills = It's really about this and there are detailed lessons inside. Standout = This is what will happen to you and picks up zebra metaphor. Professional = The book is genuinely for white collar professionals even though anyone can read it. Don't even get me started on the number of sleepless nights I had thinking about the cover design. Wondering what gives with my analogy? Seconds baby. Seconds. As in S-E-C-O-N-D-S. That's what YOU have to make the impression. You don't actually think you get your entire resume to make an impression??? Uh, heck to the NO. Your career profile, the executive summary of your ENTIRE professional life if you will, is your billboard. It's your title and subtitle. It's your ONE and BEST chance to get them excited. To entice them to review the rest of your glorious resume which substantiates everything you CLAIMED in your career profile. Just like The Zebra Code. I enticed you with the title and subtitle. Then, fulfilled my promise on the 352 pages that sit inside the cover. You get 2 paragraphs and then the remaining 1.875 pages to make good on your promise. It happens in seconds. Or 2 paragraphs. Our mind likes to know what will happen in the future, but we don't always know what will happen in the future. And so sometimes when we're stepping in, when we're presented with an opportunity per se, say, it's a new job opportunity or a new sales opportunity, a new opportunity to work with a client, sometimes that fear of the unknown can be paralyzing because we don't want to fail. But at the same time, if we don't put ourselves out there and try and explore new avenues of growing our business, career, and life, we'll never know what's out there unless we try. So, fear of the unknown is a big roadblock that a lot of us run into." – DANIELLE"What inspired me to write the book is when working with clients, I saw some commonality amongst many of the clients I was working with. It was those common roadblocks: the fear of the unknown, perfectionism, imposter syndrome—all of these common roadblocks. I saw some consistency in what I saw and the advice I gave. I also found that many people continuously said, when in my initial conversations with them, "I want clarity. I want clarity on what the future is going to bring." So, in the book, I give people each chapter as a story, learning lessons learned through different experiences and practical advice that they can take away and apply to their life on how to build a career and life that they truly love, feel fulfilled and purposeful in. That's what inspired the book: I wanted more people to see what is possible truly, to think outside the box of what's possible in their career and their life, and have clarity on what they want." – DANIELLE"I would say that failure, we don't fail. I believe that when we say, "Well, we failed," it means it's definite. We did something, failed at it, and that's it. And if we look at failure as something that didn't work out, we miss the opportunity to learn and grow for something. So, I believe that we don't fail. We either choose to learn and grow. We learn and grow from every experience that we want. Maybe it didn't go in our desired direction, but we still took something out of it. So, to say that we failed gives ourselves a disservice of going through that experience." – DANIELLEConnect with Danielle Cobo:LinkedIn:https://www.linkedin.com/in/daniellecobo/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/  Connect with Nancy Calabrese: Twitter:https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website:https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com

Barbara Safani began her career in human resources with a specialization in recruiting candidates. Her career took a transformative turn when she found herself searching for new opportunities and ended up having to revamp her own professional narrative. This provided her with valuable insights into the many challenges job seekers face. Motivated by her newfound perspective, she decided to leverage her recruitment skills to help candidates present themselves more effectively to potential employers. She now dedicates herself to aiding job seekers in crafting compelling resumes and narratives to successfully land their desired positions. With 14 international awards to her name and a wealth of credentials, Barbara owns Career Solvers, and has dedicated herself to helping others successfully navigate their own career paths. Host Pete Moore and Executive Producer David Ganulin dive into Barbara's journey from human resources and recruiting to becoming a highly sought-after career coach. They explore the intricacies of resume writing, the importance of LinkedIn, and how to effectively communicate your career journey. Whether you're looking to pivot industries, understand the value of transferable skills, or simply want tips on job searching in today's market, this episode is packed with valuable insights. If you choose to seek professional help, Safani states, "If somebody does decide they want to work with someone professionally, it can be a little bit daunting. It's not a super regulated industry. I would encourage people to do their homework. There there are multiple certifications that resume writers go through in order to really hone their writing skills. If you're working with somebody or if you if you inquire to somebody, ask them if you'll be working with them or someone on their team. Because you might like that person or develop a rapport, but then you're handed off to somebody else." Key themes discussed Transitioned from HR to career coaching expertise. LinkedIn complements traditional resumes, but has limitations. Resumes should highlight achievements, not just tasks. Explaining job transitions and balancing job search. Candidates overlook red flags, need industry transition. Choose authentic but non-damaging weaknesses for interviews. Appreciate your impact and mentorship in community. A few key takeaways: 1. Safani emphasizes the importance of identifying and highlighting transferable skills when changing careers. She points out that many skills acquired in one industry can be relevant and valuable in another. 2. Resumes should tell a story of accomplishments rather than just listing job responsibilities. Barbara advises job seekers to focus on how their actions benefited their employers, thus creating a compelling narrative that showcases their impact. 3. While LinkedIn is an essential tool for professional networking and visibility, it has limitations. A thoughtfully crafted resume can provide more detailed and specific information suited to particular job applications. Both should be used in tandem to complement each other. 4. Barbara highlights that most people secure jobs through relationships rather than by applying online. She advises job seekers to use their resumes as tools to anchor conversations and build relationships with potential employers, rather than relying solely on online job portals. 5. It is important to account for transitions and explain any gaps or frequent job changes upfront on a resume. Employers may make assumptions about gaps or job hopping, so providing context, such as a role being ended due to downsizing or a consulting gig, can help eliminate potential biases and lead to more productive conversations. Here's a line straight out of The Zebra Code… “Always remember, your success, in anything, will have more to do with where you place your attention than your ability.” There are no truer words when it comes to your job search. Most people think their history matters. (Not really.) Others think their skills matter. (Not if you keep talking about them.) Others, the even sillier ones, think keywords matter. (Dear Lordy.) In the ever-evolving landscape of careers and personal growth, few stories resonate as vividly as those that intertwine the transformative power of travel with the courage to embrace professional change. In this episode of the Transform with Travel podcast, I'm joined by Courtney Page, a seasoned executive recruiter turned career coach, about the intricacies of navigating career transitions, the profound impact of travel on personal growth, and the philosophy of life that fuels such journeys.Courtney is a seasoned executive recruiter turned executive coach who excels at guiding high-level professionals through the intricacies of executive-level work. With a background in ancient Eastern philosophies, including the Vedas, Upanishads, and Tibetan Buddhism, she is an experienced yoga teacher, reiki practitioner, and meditation guide who deeply understands how energy affects all aspects of life, including careers. Courtney holds certifications in yoga, reiki, mindfulness, human resource management, and recruiting and talent acquisition.Courtney Page's career journey is a testament to the unpredictability of life's path. Following in her father's footsteps, she entered the world of executive recruiting, a role that unexpectedly aligned with her craving for autonomy and her fascination with the personal stories behind career decisions. However, it was the freedom and introspection provided by remote work, coupled with a lifelong interest in yoga philosophy, that eventually led her to pursue a career in coaching. Courtney and I share a profound belief in the transformative power of travel. For Courtney, a semester spent studying Buddhism and yoga philosophy in India not only shaped her worldview but also her approach to life and coaching. This experience underscored the importance of being present and content, principles that she applies to her coaching practice. Her travel stories serve as a reminder that sometimes, the journey within is as significant as the distance traveled across the globe. One of the episode's key takeaways is the importance of embracing career breaks. Rather than viewing them as a setback, she advocates for seeing these pauses as opportunities for reflection, self-discovery, and ultimately, growth. Whether it's a sabbatical, a gap year, or maternity leave, these breaks provide individuals with the breathing room needed to reassess their goals, desires, and what truly makes them content. We also talk about the influence of yoga and Buddhist philosophy in her life and career choices illuminate another layer of her transformative journey. The principles of non-permanence, interconnectedness, and finding contentment in simplicity have not only shaped her personal life but also her approach to helping others navigate their career paths. These philosophies encourage a mindset of openness and flexibility, essential qualities in today's ever-changing professional landscape. We talk about:00:00 Intro00:45 Exploring Career Breaks and Personal Growth Through Travel01:18 Courtney's Journey from Executive Recruiter to Career Coach08:51 The Impact of Yoga Philosophy on Career Choices14:16 Studying Abroad in India: A Transformative Experience23:44 Navigating Career Ebb and Flow: Intuition and Change25:14 The Power of Mentorship and Coaching in Career Pivots26:41 Differentiating Between Therapists and Coaches32:06 Embracing Career Breaks: Sabbaticals, Gap Years, and Maternity Leave35:20 Resume Writing and Interview Tips After a Career Break41:39 Travel Insights and Life LessonsConnect with CourtneyInstagram:

Are you getting paid what you're worth? That was actually a trick question because there's absolutely no way for you to know exactly what you're worth. You're worth is dependent on what someone else is willing to pay for you at this exact moment in time. You are like a stock, a house, or anything else whose value is determined by someone else's desires, needs, challenges, and other factors which you know very little about. Even though your daily worth is a mystery, there are ways to determine what a potential employer feels you are worth—today. Wouldn't you know it? I have a video to help you better understand how to discover this. Inside, you'll hear me say funny stuff like, “Salary negotiation is not a transactional event. You do not win a salary negotiation. What you do… is from the time you send a cover letter and a resume or apply online or boss hunt […] from that moment with everything you do and everything you say and everything you don't do and everything you don't say until the time you counter their job offer […] that's the negotiation.” Gimme 17 minutes and 43 seconds of your life. Happy Tuesday. You know what makes me sad? Podcast video titles. Lemme tell ya why. I have a podcast for you today. It's a beauty (I think). I needed to attach a title to it because that's a law in podcastland. I really wish I had unlimited characters and could give you a full brief about what's in store for you when you click that link. The title I chose was Job Search Obstacles Preventing You from Success. It is accurate. Technically. What I share is an obstacle that prevents you from getting everything you want out of your job search. What I really wanted to title it was… Andy's Surefire Method to Show You How Awesome You Are and How Much Meaning Your Life Has and How If You Look at the World This Way You Will Never Have a Sad Day for the Rest of Your Life. That's really what the video is about. Yes, I have a fabulous story about job searching and Susan and how I transformed her interpretation of an assignment she had developing a spreadsheet. To her, she thought her work activity sounded mundane. To me, it sounded like she did something important that helped (literally) thousands of music artists get accurately paid (literally again) millions of dollars they were not properly receiving on time or at all. Not to be fussy, but I liked my interpretation a wee bit better. Maybe you walk through life this way…thinking you don't matter much? Or, thinking what you do doesn't matter much? Here, please try on my sweet rose-colored glasses so you can see what I see… If you'd like to build a great career and lead a rewarding life, check out some of these other places where I share my teachings: 1. “An object in motion is easier to redirect than a stationary one.” I'm sure I made up that quote sometime in my teens during one of my endless semesters of physics. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have that thought. I'm also sure it's the end of the year. That means many job-seekers are either tired of searching or hesitating or reluctant to get moving until the new year. I just can't have that, so I want to continue my little run of job-search-motivation to help with your momentum. Today, I'm serving up an analogy from my life to help you get charged, maintain your focus, not worry about the future, and a bunch of other really cool messages I managed to stuff into 309 seconds. For the rest of your life, remember… When you're doing something, focus on the shout. When you're reflecting, focus on the echo. When you make a mistake, make it an error of commission not omission. And, for the love of all that is holy, whenever you're not sure, hit the damn send button and sort it out later. Your resume is a marketing document, not a work history document. Yes, you use your work history to market yourself, but 99.9% of the people I've encountered do it the wrong way. In my work history, for example, I've helped companies earn likely billions of dollars. I've built project management methodologies. I've built enough tools for 10 lifetimes. Do you can about any of that when it comes to helping you find your dream job? I can create a resume that's 100,000 words and 99,400 of them wouldn't do anything but hide the 600 that matter—TO YOU! It's all my work history and I'm proud of it, but it's not important as it relates to you and what you need at this moment so I'm not gonna waste your time with that. Employers aren't companies. They're a bunch of people with personal and corporate needs. The biggest mistake job seekers make is not obsessing over what the employer's need and putting that information front and center for them. They need to see the right CONTENT with the right CONTEXT in the right SEQUENCE. This is difficult for so many reasons, but the killer is the main culprit is job seekers don't take the time upfront to consider the employers before they consider themselves. Lucky for you, you career mediator thinks of both of you (even if what I care about most is helping you get a great job with a great payday). Inside today's podcast on Resume Revolution: Resume Writing Tips and AI Tricks That Elevate Your Resume, I take a deep dive on how to: ·       Determine which information to put in your resume for max power. ·       Entice the employers to want to interview you. ·       Translate the information on your resume to interview stories. ·       Use AI (ChatGPT) to really punch up all this stuff. It's like the quadruple header of resume hits all wrapped up into one snazzy tutorial. That's why it's a lofty 43:21. Grab a coffee or a cocktail or whatever's your pleasure. It's a doozy!
