Hey hey Movers and Shakers, it's your host April Wachtel, and I'm pleased to present to you a most unusual episode of Movers and Shakers. If you're a regular listener and are familiar with our standard format- this isn't that. In today's episode I interviewed an old friend and the cocktail mastermind behind world-famous New York bars Employees Only and Macao Trading Co- Dushan Zaric. Dushan is widely recognized as an industry leader and a pioneer in craft bartending; his innovative work behind the bar has revolutionized the art of the cocktail. Dushan and I hadn't spoken in about a decade and what started as the pre-interview ended up being the actual interview. For anyone who knows Dushan, it will not surprise you that he broke the format of my podcast, and we love him for it. Without further ado, please enjoy my interview with Dushan Zaric. In the podcast today we discuss: What we've both been up to for the last decade Dushan's new Youtube show, 4am Chicken Soup Dushan's perspective on avoiding burnout and rediscovering the privilege of being of service to others And so much more. It was amazing catching up with Dushan after so many years. Please enjoy my interview with Dushan Zaric. On this episode I’m speaking with April Wachtel, former bartender and brand ambassador, and currently the the owner of Swig and Swallow, and we get into that business and what she’s currently working on. There’s a bit of a technical issue towards the end of the interview, just in the last couple minutes, but before you get to that, you’re going to hear about April’s 22 years of experience in the hospitality industry, starting with her very first job in the industry, working as a brand ambassador, bartending at Lahi Kia, attending Tales of the Cocktail, and more. One final note, if you’re familiar with apartment bartender, aka Elliot Clark’s story, he talked on this podcast about being in New York and attending a class on spirits and cocktails. That class, which is what first got him interested in cocktails, was taught by none other than April. It was great to see things come full circle. The home meal-kit delivery market in the US has grown to 1.5 billion dollars a year. The current category leader is Blue Apron. Opened in 2012, the company delivers 8 million meals a month and has a valuation of 3 billion dollars. The category began with focus with specialty meals like vegan and organic options. The latest home cooking kits are for the parts of the meal that most companies have not really addressed: desserts and cocktails. In-studio guests on this episode: Agathe Assouline-Lichten CEO/Co-Founder Red Velvet NYC. Red Velvet NYC was founded in 2015 by sisters Agathe and Arielle Assouline-Lichten, who were inspired to create a solution when they learned their friends found baking too time-consuming. Having grown up in the gourmet food business, the sisters loved to cook and bake, but struggled to find specialty ingredients and found the conventional process cumbersome. “We want our friends to find baking as rewarding as we do,” Agathe says. “We created Red Velvet NYC to make baking more approachable, convenient, and fun.” Agathe, the CEO of the company, received her MBA from the famed EHL hotel school in Lausanne, Switzerland. Arielle, the CTO and Creative Director for the brand, is a Harvard Graduate School of Design graduate. They both love to serve homemade desserts at dinner parties. “Baking is really about bringing people together,” Agathe says. “We want to make that experience accessible for everyone. Nothing makes someone smile like a fragrant, warm-from-the-oven dessert.” April Wachtel, CEO/Co-Founder Swig + Swallow. April is a 20-year veteran in the beverage and hospitality industry.
