The convergence of student spring breaks in multiple Chinese cities with the upcoming Qingming Festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day, has created an extended travel period from Wednesday to April 6, forming a key new growth opportunity for the tourism market, according to travel agencies. Industry data showed that the six-day window is driving two distinct travel peaks and fueling a significant surge in domestic and outbound travel. Studying Chinese media has never been a stable intellectual enterprise. As Professor Yuezhi Zhao once observed, it often resembles aiming at a target that appears clear from a distance but becomes elusive on closer inspection. Over the past decade, that target has grown even more fragmented and mobile. Media systems across the Chinese-speaking world—including the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, and transnational Chinese communities—have been reshaped by rapid technological transformation, intensifying geopolitical rivalry, and profound political change. It is against this backdrop that the second edition of The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Media has been published. Rather than simply updating a reference work, this edition reflects a field fundamentally reconfigured. Assumptions formed before the full societal penetration of digital platforms and social media now require serious reconsideration. The digital is no longer one topic among many; it is central to understanding contemporary political, cultural, and economic life. In this podcast conversation, co-editors Dr Ming-yeh Rawnsley and Dr Yiben Ma reflect on the making of the new volume. Dr Ma contributed to the first edition (2015) and joined the editorial team for the second edition, also authoring a new chapter. After introducing the book and outlining its scope, they share seven key reflections as editors and scholars of Chinese media: Digital transformation as the organising principle Scholarship grounded in lived experience A regional lens without isolation Expanding the field beyond institutional narratives The limits of global communication strategy Hong Kong: accelerated transformation Macao: continuity and quiet change The second edition comprises 29 chapters, in addition to an extensive introduction. Despite striving for breadth and balance, the editors recognise that many areas remain underexplored and warrant sustained attention. They hope the volume will stimulate further research and dialogue. As global uncertainty deepens and information politics become increasingly consequential, the study of Chinese media can no longer be regarded as a specialised regional concern. It is central to understanding how power, technology, and communication interact in the contemporary world. In this sense, the handbook contributes not only to Chinese media studies but also to the broader field of media and communications. Learn more about your ad choices. “I remember when I performed at Carnegie Hall for the first time. It was transformative. I remember taking the stage and just being in complete awe. I looked out, and it was just incredible. When I heard the sound, it was even more incredible. I used to say that my favorite part of my job was standing right at the stage door and watching every choir singer come and take the stage for the first time. They would look out and just be in complete awe. Now that I'm production manager, my new favorite part of my job is when conductors come off the stage and I get to tell them, ‘turn around, go back, they're still clapping for you.'” - Eric Spiegel“Living abroad gave me a whole new perspective and appreciation for my home country. It taught me a lot about other cultures and how to work with different people and have a certain cultural sensitivity and sensibility. I could not recommend it enough. We're trying to grow and enhance the kinds of international opportunities that we provide. It's such a collaborative, educational experience that goes way beyond one or two concerts. We know for many people who travel with us, it might be their first time in Europe. We try to make sure that it's special in every possible way that we can.” - James RedcayA native of Allentown, Pennsylvania, James Redcay joined MidAmerica Productions in April of 2015. Apply to work with me: https://www.michaelxcampion.com/Vivian Siu was born in Hong Kong. At age 6 she and her mother moved to New York in the hope of a better life. At age 16 she lost her mother, and dropped out of high-school in the USA, moving back to HK to avoid being put in foster care …She then dragged herself up by the bootstraps, hitting the books, and somehow getting into and graduating from Columbia University She went from bartending around HK and sleeping on friend's couches with a small suitcase just to survive… to a successful career in investment banking. As an escape from her harsh reality, she found joy in the underground video arcades of gritty Kowloon. She found community there and found that she was actually really good at the car racing games. Many years later, she used that muscle memory from the arcade…to unbelievably making history as the first female and first LGBTQ Formula 4 driver ever to finish the Macau Grand Prix. All with just 6 months of experience and 4 real races in an actual racing car, and whilst holding down a job in Investment Banking. Seriously incredible and the movie about her life so far will be shown on all Cathay Pacific flights starting in DecemberVivian's story is a reminder to all of us that when education and sport, meets a young person with drive… anything is possible. She was not born into money. There has been no silver spoon to feed her opportunities. And when you don't have opportunity fed to you on a silver spoon, you learn to lick it off knives. She's taken every sliver of an opportunity shown to her and really made her own luck. The odds were completely stacked against her achieving any of these things. And yet, here she is. Record breaker. Ultimately, I've often said that “It's hard to beat the person that refuses to give up.”This woman has not, and will not give up. We all have something to learn from her.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.Guest - Vivian Siu (https://www.instagram.com/viviansiu28/?hl=en)Connect with me: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelxcampion/Instagram: @michaelxcampionWatch the movie Zero to Macao (https://www.zerotomacao.com/) on all Cathay Pacific flights (00:00) Preview(00:41) Intro(04:41) Moving to New York as a kid(07:40) Losing her mum at 16(10:07) The arcade racing game that kept her sane(13:53) Rock bottom years(17:19) GED, community college, obsessive studying habits(20:57) Getting Into Columbia (25:42) Ivy League grind(30:33) Life After Columbia(31:33) Graduating alone(36:54) Survival mode mindset(40:24) From arcade to track(44:20) Mentors and momentum: the push that made it real(45:02) The Macau Grand Prix experience(47:38) Racing for her dad(51:28) Releasing years of bottled up pain(54:46) Zero to Macau(57:52) Who this story is for(01:00:01) Doing it for mum and dad vs doing it for yourself(01:03:21) Why every lap feels like a win(01:07:00) Inner game routines(01:08:32) What's next for Vivian(01:10:11) Outro

How do you scale a molecular mixology program up from one property to several dozen? The first step is to love being busy and fortunately Mariena Mercer-Boarini fits that bill. The master mixologist for Wynn Resorts North America talks through her thought process for running beverage programs from Boston to Macao, the intense infrastructure she's built in her hometown of Las Vegas to keep all her locations humming, and an upcoming street festival featuring a number of Speakeasy alumni. She also gets into her side projects highlighting buzz buttons, a naturally occurring compound that does a number on your taste buds.
