Ya sabéis que no me gusta hablar de accidentes ni de fallecidos en la competición… entonces… ¿por qué hago este podcast? Por algo evidente: Afortunadamente las personas fallecidas con responsabilidad directa de las carreras ha caído de forma exponencial… aunque hay matices. De vez en cuando me gusta hacer podcast de Motorsport…. Y este me lo habéis pedido de forma reiterada. Me resistí porque, como digo, siempre me gusta halar en positivo de los coches, las motos y las carreras… pero me he dado cuenta de los grandes progresos que se han producido en este campo. Comencemos por las 4 ruedas: Os pongo un ejemplo paradigmático: La F1, no la carrera, pero sí la categoría históricamente más peligrosa del mundo de las 4 ruedas… durante muchos años, cuando acababa la temporada, siempre había algún piloto que estaba en la foto oficial de comienzo de temporada… pero no en la de cierre. Nada menos que 46 pilotos han fallecido en la F1 desde la creación del Campeonato en 1950, una media de uno cada año y medio más o menos… pero es una media falsa. Desde 2014, cuando falleció Jules Bianchi, no ha fallecido en accidente ni un solo piloto de F1. Y si nos adelantamos un poco más, hay que irse a 1994 cuando fallecieron un solo dos días, Roland Ratzenberger y el gran Ayrton Senna. Es decir, desde 1995 hasta hoy, toquemos madera, nada menos que 20 años, solo ha fallecido un piloto. Si haces las cuentas con 45 pero en solo 35 años te sale una media de casi 3 pilotos cada dos años… como ves las cosas han cambiado mucho. Y para que cambien tanto ha habido 3 puntos de inflexión. Vamos a verlo. París-Madrid: La carrera de la muerte. Se llama “Carrera de la muerte” a la celebrada en 1903 entre Paris y Madrid… a media carrera ya habían muerto 7 personas, entre ellos varios espectadores y el propio Marcel Renault, fundador de la marca que lleva su nombre. 24 horas de Le Mans de 1955. El número de víctimas en Le Mans fue apabullante: 83 espectadores y el propio piloto del coche accidentado, Pierre Levegh. Una confusión a la entra de boxes del piloto de Austin Lance Macklin hizo que Pierre Levegh con su Mercedes se estrellase contra él y su coche arrasase las tribunas… GP San Marino de 1994. Tercer hito, en este caso que sirvió para mejorar la seguridad de los pilotos… y es que en solo un Gran Premio fallecieron Roland Ratzenberger el sábado y Ayrton Senna el domingo… Vamos con las carreras, pero una advertencia: En algunos casos diversas fuentes dan datos distintos… he puesto los que me han parecido más fiables o los que aparecen en más repetidos. Si tenéis otros datos, por favor, ponerlos en comentarios. -Subida a Pikes Peak. 4 fallecidos. -GP de Macao. 17 fallecidos. -Carrera Panamericana. 27 fallecidos. -París-Dakar. 47 fallecidos. -Mille Miglia. 56 fallecidos. -500 Millas de Indianápolis. 73 fallecidos. -24 horas de Le Mans. 104 fallecidos. -TT Isla de Man. 270 pilotos fallecidos. Conclusión. No he incluido otras pruebas famosas por su peligrosidad, como la Baja 1000, algunas Road Races del Cto. Británico de motociclismo o la ilegal Cannon Ball. En unos casos porque no me ha parecido interesante u oportuno y en otros, voy a ser sincero, por no encontrar datos fidedignos… Como decía, me he animado a hacer este podcast porque en el fondo es optimista: Nunca ha sido más seguro que ahora correr en coche o en moto… con excepciones… ahí lo dejo. Coche del día. Aunque el primer modelo de Porsche en utilizar la denominación Carrera fue el 356 A de 1955 voy a elegir el 911 Carrera RS de 1972, un coche que me volvía loco en mi adolescencia… y que lo sigue haciendo ahora… yo creo que más. Un coche con motor de 2.7 litros, por supuesto detrás y por supuesto refrigerado por aire, con 210 CV para un peso de 910 kg… un verdadero tiro solo apto para conductores expertos o porschistas acérrimos.

Again, I am drawing on old writing, and another source I used was a leather-bound notebook I filled with entries detailing my day-to-day life in my first few years in China. I created this for my parents, who are well-travelled but had not been to China. The notebook passed back to me after my mother passed away. I was gratified to learn that she had often read it, and it was always close to hand for her. For further reading and viewing, I recommend the Youtube channels, @VideosByCaine and @DaNiuLaoShi both by a friend of mine who also lived in China. His experiences are naturally different from mine, his personal perspective is unique, but there is much in common also. I highly recommend all his content. Between the both of us, you would get a very full and rounded idea of life in China. No two people experience the same (or similar) events in the same way. General Secretary Xi Jinping of the Communist Party of China Central Committee has extended New Year greetings to all Chinese people on the mainland, in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and all over the world.

However, the SAR government is now making dedicated and determined efforts to diversify Macao's industrial structure to reduce its dependence on the gaming sector.Xu Chang, a professor with the "One Country Two Systems "Research Centre at Macao Polytechnic University, said that Macao has revised its gaming law and regulations to strengthen supervision of casino operations and tackle gambling-related crimes in recent years."Such efforts are of great significance for guiding this traditional lifeline industry toward legal, orderly and healthy development," he said.Last year, the SAR government released a development plan for Macao's economic diversification from 2024 through 2028. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saints Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, Priest, and Paul Chŏng Ha-sang, and Companions, Martyrs Lectionary: 447The Saint of the day is Saints Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and CompanionsSaints Andrew Kim Taegon, Paul Chong Hasang, and Companions' Stories The first native Korean priest, Andrew Kim Taegon was the son of Christian converts. Following his baptism at the age of 15, Andrew traveled 1,300 miles to the seminary in Macao, China. After six years, he managed to return to his country through Manchuria. That same year he crossed the Yellow Sea to Shanghai and was ordained a priest. Back home again, he was assigned to arrange for more missionaries to enter by a water route that would elude the border patrol. He was arrested, tortured, and finally beheaded at the Han River near Seoul, the capital. Andrew’s father Ignatius Kim, was martyred during the persecution of 1839, and was beatified in 1925. Paul Chong Hasang, a lay apostle and married man, also died in 1839 at age 45. Among the other martyrs in 1839 was Columba Kim, an unmarried woman of 26. She was put in prison, pierced with hot tools and seared with burning coals. She and her sister Agnes were disrobed and kept for two days in a cell with condemned criminals, but were not molested. After Columba complained about the indignity, no more women were subjected to it. The two were beheaded. Peter Ryou, a boy of 13, had his flesh so badly torn that he could pull off pieces and throw them at the judges. He was killed by strangulation. Protase Chong, a 41-year-old nobleman, apostatized under torture and was freed. Later he came back, confessed his faith and was tortured to death. Christianity came to Korea during the Japanese invasion in 1592 when some Koreans were baptized, probably by Christian Japanese soldiers. Evangelization was difficult because Korea refused all contact with the outside world except for taking taxes to Beijing annually. On one of these occasions, around 1777, Christian literature obtained from Jesuits in China led educated Korean Christians to study. A home Church began. When a Chinese priest managed to enter secretly a dozen years later, he found 4,000 Catholics, none of whom had ever seen a priest. Seven years later there were 10,000 Catholics. Religious freedom came to Korea in 1883. Besides Andrew and Paul, Pope John Paul II canonized 98 Koreans and three French missionaries who had been martyred between 1839 and 1867, when he visited Korea in 1984. Among them were bishops and priests, but for the most part they were lay persons: 47 women and 45 men. Reflection We marvel at the fact that the Korean Church was strictly a lay Church for a dozen years after its birth. How did the people survive without the Eucharist? It is no belittling of this and other sacraments to realize that there must be a living faith before there can be a truly beneficial celebration of the Eucharist. The sacraments are signs of God's initiative and response to faith already present. The sacraments increase grace and faith, but only if there is something ready to be increased. The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (08/01/2024): 3:05pm- WSJ Reporter Freed as Part of Russian Prisoner Swap: Drew Hinshaw, Joe Parkinson, and Aruna Viswantha of The Wall Street Journal report: “Russia freed wrongly convicted Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich as part of the largest and most complex East-West prisoner swap since the Cold War, in which he and more than a dozen others jailed by the Kremlin were exchanged for Russians held in the U.S. and Europe, including a convicted murderer. Gershkovich and other Americans left Russian aircraft at roughly 11:20 a.m. ET at an airport in Turkey's capital, Ankara. Gershkovich was then transported to an aircraft lounge on a Turkish bus. Russia had kept the 32-year-old behind bars for more than a year on a false allegation of espionage. It sentenced him in a hurried and secret three-day trial to 16 years in a high-security penal colony.” Rich notes that it's wonderful that Gershkovich has been released but wonders why Pennsylvania school teacher Marc Fogel remains wrongfully imprisoned by Russia? Khelif had previously  been disqualified from participating in women's boxing competitions after testing revealed Khelif possessed XY chromosomes. While well-intended and useful in some ways, the bill is full of land mines that the House would be wise to clean up…If parents don't want their children spending more than an hour on TikTok a day or playing video games past 8 p.m., they should have the power to stop them. But politicians always want more control, and they say it's unfair to ask parents to supervise children online. Thus the Senate bill would empower the Federal Trade Commission and 50 state Attorneys General to serve in loco parentis and police the platforms. Companies would have a legal ‘duty of care' to design their platforms to prevent harm to minors. During the rally, Trump emphasized presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris' far-left policy preferences, including: a ban on fracking, abolishing ICE, and ending private health insurance. Trump also spent time discussing Harris' failed attempt to secure the U.S. Southern border. Trump promised the crowd “We're not going to let her do to Pennsylvania what she did to California. She destroyed San Francisco."—even calling out Soros-funded District Attorneys and explicitly mentioning Philadelphia. 5:25pm- Flashback: In 2016, KCAL 9—a CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles, CA—reported that Kamala Harris was accused of treating her Senate “campaign funds like a personal checking account to fund a life of luxury.” When questioned about the accusations, Harris seemingly conceded that money was misappropriated but blamed it on her campaign manager. 5:35pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss the Biden Administration's prisoner swap agreement with Russia. Dr. Coates fears that because Russia got the better end of this trade deal, it could encourage Vladimir Putin to imprison more Americans. Plus, why isn't the American media paying closer attention to authoritarian Nicolas Maduro's seizure of power in Venezuela? Coates suspects the media is protecting the Biden-Harris Administration for having eased sanctions on Venezuela in exchange for Maduro's empty promise of free and fair elections—which clearly didn't happen. Shapiro's Failures Enabled Sexual Harassment,' the National Women's Defense League said in a statement that the Harris vetting team should ‘consider the handling of past complaints of sexual harassment inside the Pennsylvania Governor's office.' In a Wednesday letter to victims of the attacks, military prosecutors said the three defendants had agreed to plead guilty in exchange for life sentences.
