In this episode, host Susan Mathews is in conversation with Ferris Jabr, author of Becoming Earth: How Our Planet Came to Life (2024), and a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and Scientific American. The interview focused on the central question in the book: in what ways and to what extent has life changed the planet? From microbes to mammoths, life has transformed the continents, oceans, and atmosphere, turning a lump of orbiting rock into the world as we've known it. In the conversation, Jabr spoke of how Western science in particular has segregated geology from biology, regarding planet Earth essentially as a giant rock that happens to have some life, minimising the role of life in shaping the planet. Ferris Jabr has written for The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Harper's, National Geographic, Wired, Outside, Lapham's Quarterly, McSweeney's, and The Los Angeles Review of Books, among other publications. He is the recipient of a Whiting Foundation Creative Nonfiction Grant, as well as fellowships from UC Berkeley and the MIT Knight Science Journalism Program. His work has been anthologized in several editions of The Best American Science and Nature Writing series. He has an MA in journalism from New York University and a Bachelor of Science from Tufts University. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his partner, Ryan, their dog, Jack, and more plants than they can count. You can find him @ferrisjabr on all social media (Twitter/X, Bluesky, Instagram, Threads, Mastodon).

Parents Navigating the Teen Years
83: How to Uncover Family Stories and Bridge Generations

Parents Navigating the Teen Years

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 26, 2024 29:00

Elizabeth Keating is a professor of anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin who specializes in culture and communication. She recently published her third book, which reached #1 on Amazon's Movers & Shakers in Books in the first week of publication, and was #1 in cultural anthropology the week after. The book, The Essential Questions: Interview Your Family to Uncover Stories and Bridge Generations, takes an anthropological approach to finding out about your own family history, and the Essential Questions help you to uncover new sides of family members you've known all your life. Elizabeth's academic research and writing focuses on culture and communication. She's done fieldwork on the small island of Pohnpei (Micronesia), in the Austin Deaf Community, in Romania, India, Brazil, Germany and the U.S. She has presented talks and papers in 15 countries on a variety of topics in language and culture, and authored or co-authored over 50 academic articles. She has given talks about her research on communication in global teams at Google and in other business settings. She's been a professor in the department of anthropology at UT Austin for over 25 years. Key Takeaways In family conversations, the focus and excitement is generally on what the children and grandchildren are up to. Questions about what it was like for parents and grandparents when they were growing up is uncommon. It's hard for young people to picture their parents and grandparents as kids and ask what their life was like at that time. Elizabeth shares her own personal story about interviewing her mom about the family, and then realizing after her mom had passed, that there was so much she didn't know about her mom and wished she had the foresight to have had those conversations. How is focusing on the stories of our elders important in raising our teens? What lessons do they learn? Teens feel a sense of belonging as family stories are shared and they feel a deeper connection and conversation with their older family members. Often teenagers ask themselves why they do what they do, and in interviewing older family members, they often find a correlation to their family history and way of being. What challenges did older family members have with their parents and the hardships they faced that may have been passed down through the generations This offers a greater understanding for teens to know why their parents/grandparents respond/behave the way they do in certain situations. Teens can learn to become more open and compassionate as they learn about the difficult stories in their family history. Who is Ben? Ben is many things. He is an Annapolitan. He's a loving son. He's a fighter. He's a cancer survivor. He beat all the odds. And tragically, he's no longer with us. Today we speak with Ben's parents, Leslie and Kirk Shadrick who are carrying on his legacy in a number of ways. We learn about Ben's short life, and all that he enjoyed. We discussed his struggles and victories and his death. And we discuss how his legacy will live on. The Benjamin Mario Shadrick Foundation is building an orphanage in Cuernavaca Mexico in Ben's name. Additionally, they provide grants to help with costs for alternative cancer treatments and for training for parents of a brain-injured child. More immediately, in partnership with Maryland Hall, they will be hosting a fundraiser on November 18th called Movers & Shakers. In a nutshell, local community members and leaders will be paired with professional dancers in a Dancing With the Stars style event. County Executive Steuart Pittman will be dancing, but as of now, it is undetermined if he will be a mover, or a shaker! Have a listen!
