Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
Ithis week's episode of the Hop Forward Podcast, we catch up with Redchurch Brewery's Head of Operations, Rachael Reynolds, to talk about recovering from crowdfunding and the troubles that plagued the brewery in 2019. In essence, crowdfunding is a great idea, allowing die-fans and casual followers the opportunity to make a difference to a project; to do good while allowing others to brew good. As a relatively new practise, those looking to crowdfund have largely had to navigate through uncharted water. Although crowdfunding finds an unlikely beginning in 18th century Germany, where German authors would take cash pre-orders for books they had yet to write, it wasn’t until 2001 when a website called ArtistShare became the internet’s first fan-funding platform and became the blueprint for today’s modern crowdfunding sites, such as IndieGoGo and Kickstarter. For a season, it seemed as if crowdfunding was the golden ticket to securing the growth capital required to kickstart or take a brewing venture to the next level. Brewers across the globe took to platforms such as Kickstarter, Crowdcube, and Seedrs to reach out directly to their fans and ask their communities for cash in exchange for perks and merch, and - as time went on - shares and part ownerships, many of which came with inflated valuations. But what happens when crowdfunding leaves a sour taste in people’s mouths? Most notably in the UK, when people think of brewery crowdfunding, two names often arise - Woolwich based Hop Stuff Brewery, which raised over £1.5m through investors only to have the brewery seized by the landlord after failing to make rent on account of unpaid debts, delayed accounts and other financial difficulties. The second is Harlow based brewery, Redchurch. But after the social media storm has died down, what becomes of a business like Redchurch Brewery? How do the news owners or the staff, the few faithful who endured the chaos, re-emerge and pick up the pieces? How do you go about rebuilding damaged consumer and customer relationships and tell them things are different now? How do you rebuild trust in a brewery and brand that’s had its name tainted and dragged through the mud by the actions of individuals who no longer represent the business? How do you reassure those who had their fingers burned first time around? This is one of the many challenges that the team at Redchurch have been asking as they look to re-establish themselves in the market. I was fortunate enough to get some time with Rachael at BrewLDN in February, to drink some beer and to hear their side of the story - casualties themselves of the poor decisions made by the original founders, albeit in a much different way. But I don’t want to give too much away…! What I want to do is to allow them to tell their side of the story, because there is always another side to the story...! --- BREWERY SHOUTOUTS Every week, we're giving brewery shoutouts and exclusive offers for our podcast listeners to some of the UK's best brewers and beer businesses. Brian Camelio founded ArtistShare in 2001. The platform is now recognized as the Internets first fan-funding platform. ArtistShare enables fans to not only fund their favorite artist’s projects, but to truly become participants in the creative process. Brian was a visionary in that he saw the internet’s potential as a way to connect fans and artists directly. Since 2003, ArtistShare projects have received countless awards and accolades including 30 Grammy nominations and 10 Grammy award wins. In March of 2019, Brian was contacted by the Web Foundation, which was founded by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, who is credited with helping to invent the internet. The Web Foundation was celebrating the Web’s 30th birthday and they complied a select timeline of events which included “the launch of ArtistShare which has had a significant contribution to the web.” I learned a lot in my conversation with Brian and hope you find this applicable to your own corner of the arts universe. In particular, we talk about Brian's unique approach to what he calls "fan relationship marketing." This is particularly relevant for artists and arts organizations right now as everyone is trying to make sense of how to use their data to better connect with fans and patrons. There is also a great marketing story about what Brian learned from Trey Anastasio, the guitarist from the widley popular group Phish. Thanks again to Brian for taking the time to speak with me. Please enjoy our conversation and thanks everyone for listening to Speaking of the Arts!
Ride shotgun through the history of crowdfunding with those who made that history, including Mark Kelly from Marillion, Ted Leo, Molly Neuman from Kickstarter, Jayce Varden from PledgeMusic, Brian Camelio from ArtistShare, John Trigonis from Indiegogo, and more! In Episode 1 of this five-part podcast from Berklee Online we'll get into the controversial who did what when of online music crowdfunding, and introduce you to our four featured artists.
As a 20-year entrepreneur and founder of Cyber PR, Ariel became interested in crowdfunding a decade ago while speaking on a panel with the founder of ArtistShare, the first documented crowdfunding website. Ariel is a seasoned speaker and dynamic guest, having spoken in over a dozen countries to 100,000 creatives and artists as well as speaking at SXSW 11 times and counting. After years of advising clients on crowdfunding campaigns and putting her money where her mouth is through a ton of contributions, Ariel decided put her PR experience, event planning and grit into practice and launched a crowdfunding campaign of her own. We’re excited to let you in on her new book that documents the lessons learned (and stress endured) during that campaign which raised over $60,000. In Crowdstart: The Ultimate Guide to a Powerful and Profitable Crowdfunding Campaign Ariel provides a clear, actionable roadmap that helps artists, entrepreneurs and creatives figure out who’s in their crowd and how to marshall that support into an effective crowdfunding campaign. The latter part of the book walks the reader (step-by-step and day-by-day) through how to create and implement a successful campaign, design an effective video, create the right amount of reward tiers and stay in an empowered mindset to ensure campaign success. In this podcast, we get into some useful and practical tips for building a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Mark talks to singer/songwriter/guitarist Kate Schutt. Originally from Pennsylvania, Kate spent time in Boston and then many years in Guelph, Ontario before settling in her current locale of NYC. A slew of great recordings make up her body of work, including "No Love Lost" (the one Shilansky is on, also Shilansky-pal Dave Jamrog, w/string arrangements by Jeff Louie and a special appearance by Toni Lynn Washington), and "The Telephone Game," (featuring Orrin Evans, Terri Lynn Carrington, John Ellis) a project made in conjunction with the innovative Artistshare label. Kate and Mark talk about all this, as well as studying Chinese, why someone would bail on Harvard to go to Berklee (!!?), the life of a self-managing/producing artist, and much more. If you've heard other interviews with Kate (she has been making some major waves in the industry, including being featured on NPR's "Song of the Day"), this one is different, because in this one Kate addresses how she "left it all behind" and dropped out of the biz for a significant period of time, to do volunteer work, and she discusses this in moving detail. Songs include: "The Moon Got Broken", "Our Legs are Burning," "Glamorous Life" (a Sheila E cover!), "You Can Have the Sky," and "Raining."
