W/C 9th June 2025Now you know I like a good sitcom, and you also know that I rate Not Going Out very highly and certainly worthy of special mention.Well the new series landed last night, and the BBC dropped all six episodes which resulted in us watching the first four. I am pleased to report that it is a strong as ever, but the reason I mention it is because the second episode called Doll is really very clever.I am not quite sure how you begin to put together a narrative like that, the whole thing is a little uncomfortable (and certainly quite unnerving) but it hard not to be swept along in the subtext. If you can get the iPlayer, you might want to give it a go.Stay safe.God Only Knows - BBC (Various)Sloop John B - Brian Wilson & Alan JardineStairway to Heaven - Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Jason Bonham, et alTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw - it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. In 2015 he was named among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Jimmy's memoir, The Cake and the Rain, details his formative years and early career through 1973. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe alarming rise of politically charged rhetoric and its real-world consequences takes center stage in this candid morning reflection. When Representative Jasmine Crockett suggests Democrats need to "punch" in races against Senator Ted Cruz, we must ask: how do such statements impact our already volatile political landscape? With Tesla dealerships becoming targets of what can only be described as domestic terrorism—complete with incendiary devices and armed suspects—the connection between inflammatory speech and dangerous action becomes impossible to ignore.Meanwhile, Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson's declaration that "it's more embarrassing than ever to be an American" sparks a fascinating exploration of celebrity influence and fan reactions. As social media critics suggest she leave the country while longtime fans wrestle with disappointment, we're confronted with a deeply personal question: where do we draw our own boundaries when it comes to separating art from political views? The conversation evolves into a thoughtful examination of consumer choices and personal values. Can we still enjoy Streisand's voice while disagreeing with her politics? Should we continue watching Clooney's films despite opposing viewpoints? These aren't simple questions with universal answers—they're individual judgments that reveal much about how we navigate our increasingly divided culture. What's your threshold for boycotting? Have you ever stopped supporting an artist, product, or company based solely on political statements? Join the conversation and share where you draw your own lines between appreciation and principle in today's complex political landscape. For this bonus episode, the Shakespeare and Company podcast welcomes Jeremy Pelt, renowned jazz trumpeter and author of Griot: Examining the Lives of Jazz Great Storytellers. In conversation with Alex Freiman, Pelt discusses the evolution of jazz, the influence of oral traditions, and the importance of documenting firsthand accounts from legendary musicians. Reflecting on his early days at Berklee, his experiences touring worldwide, and his deep reverence for jazz elders like Roy Haynes and Wayne Shorter, Pelt shares insights into both the triumphs and struggles of jazz musicians. He also addresses the debate over the term “jazz,” the intersection of jazz and hip-hop, and the ongoing challenge of preserving the music's integrity in an industry that often sidelines its true practitioners. Listen in for a compelling exploration of jazz history, culture, and the passion that fuels one of its modern torchbearers.*Jeremy Pelt has become one of the preeminent young trumpeters within the world of jazz. Forging a bond with the Mingus Big Band very early on, as his career progressed, Pelt built upon these relationships and many others which eventually lead to collaborations with some of the genre's greatest masters. These projects include performances and recordings with Cliff Barbaro, Keter Betts, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ravi Coltrane, Frank Foster, Winard Harper, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, John Hicks, Charli Persip, Ralph Peterson, Lonnie Plaxico, Bobby Short, Cedar Walton, Frank Wess, Nancy Wilson and The Skatalites, to name a few.Pelt frequently performs alongside such notable ensembles as the Roy Hargrove Big Band, The Village Vanguard Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Big Band, and is a member of the Lewis Nash Septet and The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes. As a leader, Pelt has recorded ten albums and has toured globally with his various ensembles, appearing at many major jazz festivals and concert venues.Pelt's recordings and performances have earned him critical acclaim, both nationally and internationally. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal by legendary jazz writer and producer, Nat Hentoff, and was voted Rising Star on the trumpet, five years in a row by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association. Pelt is currently touring throughout the United States and Europe in support of his latest release, "Soundtrack".Alex Freiman is a guitarist, composer, and singer trained at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Drawing from jazz, blues, soul, and funk, he masterfully blends these influences with energy and virtuosity, creating music that is both groovy and sophisticated. After collaborating with major figures on the French and international scenes, including Stéphane Belmondo, he released his debut album as a leader, Play It Gentle, in 2017. Recorded with Léon Parker (drums), Fred Nardin (organ), and special guest Stéphane Belmondo, this album reflects his passion for improvisation and sonic elegance. Constantly seeking innovation, he launched Alex Freiman & The Hot Sauce, an explosive project where jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop intertwine. His EP In The Beginning (September 2024) marks the start of a new musical era, followed by the singles We Are One (January 2025), featuring rapper Tiemoko, and This Is The Hot Sauce (March 2025), affirming his vibrant and innovative musical identity. In 2025, Alex Freiman continues his groove exploration with a new album and fresh collaborations. Alex Freiman & The Hot Sauce will also be performing in Paris and across France, delivering electrifying shows where improvisation and energy collide.Listen to Alex Freiman's latest EP, In The Beginning: https://open.spotify.com/album/5iZYPMCUnG7xiCtsFCBlVa?si=h5x3FK1URq6SwH9Kb_SO3w Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
