Renowned bassist Marion Hayden will return to The Station at Michigan Central with the Grammy-nominated band Straight Ahead for a special Mother's Day edition of Fridays at The Station, on May 8, 2026. The Detroit-born Hayden was the first artist to perform at the first-ever Fridays at The Station event, in April 2025. She has performed and recorded with a number of leading musicians from the 1980s onwards and is considered one of the best acoustical bassists in the country. She began performing at age 15 under the tutelage of master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and saxophonist Wendell Harrison. She would go on to perform with legends such as Regina Carter, Nancy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and George Benson. She also received the Kresge Eminent Artist Award in 2025, and is widely recognized as an advocate for the preservation of the cultural and artistic legacy of jazz. She is a co-founder of the Grammy-nominated ensemble Straight Ahead—the first all-woman jazz ensemble signed to Atlantic Records. Over the years, members of the band have shared the concert stage with a who's-who of the music world, including Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, George Duke, Stanley Clark, the Yellowjackets and Dianne Reeves. “Straight Ahead will present a celebration of women as creatives, composers, arrangers and conceptualists,” Hayden said. “The band will open a musical conversation, engaging the audience in themes of womanhood, power and intentionally creating a space where women are uplifted.” Featuring Hayden on bass, Alina Morr on keys, Gayelynn McKinney on drums, Ingrid Racine on trumpet and the vocal stylings of Kymberli Wright. Widely recognized for their eclectic and soulful approach to creating music, the Straight Ahead sound ranges comfortably from jazz, to Latin music and jazzy hip-hop.

Eu amo o Brasil. Heart's Ann Wilson: The Voice, The Hits & The Story Behind the Sisterhood

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 22, 2026 52:00

Ann Wilson, the powerhouse voice behind the band Heart, is widely regarded as one of rock's greatest female vocalists. Born in 1950 in San Diego and raised in a military family that moved frequently, Ann found stability in music early on. Alongside her younger sister Nancy Wilson, she was inspired by seeing The Beatles perform in '66—a moment both sisters later described as life-changing. Ann began performing in local Seattle bands in the late '60s, developing a commanding vocal style rooted in rock, folk and blues. Nancy joined her a few years later, bringing a distinctive acoustic guitar style that perfectly complemented Ann's voice. Together, they formed the core of Heart, one of the first major rock bands fronted by women in a male-dominated industry. Their breakthrough came with the '75 album Dreamboat Annie, featuring hits like “Magic Man” and “Crazy on You,” both co-written by the sisters. The band's mix of hard rock and acoustic textures set them apart, and Ann's soaring vocals became their signature. Through the late '70s, songs like “Barracuda” showcased a tougher, more aggressive edge. The '80s brought a reinvention. After industry pressures and lineup changes, Heart adopted a more polished, radio-friendly sound, leading to massive hits such as “These Dreams” and “Alone.” Though some critics debated the shift, it brought the band renewed commercial success and global recognition. At the centre of Heart's story, however, has always been the relationship between Ann and Nancy—a bond that has been both creatively powerful and, at times, deeply strained. In their early years, the sisters were inseparable collaborators, writing and performing together with a near-telepathic musical connection. Ann has described Nancy as her “soulmate” in music, noting that they “finish each other's sentences musically.” But like many long-term creative partnerships—especially between siblings—their relationship has gone through periods of tension. Differences in artistic direction became more pronounced over time. A major rupture came in 2016 following a family incident involving Ann's husband and Nancy's children, which led to a temporary estrangement and effectively split the band into separate camps for a period. Even so, the sisters have repeatedly found their way back to each other, reconciling both personally and professionally. Their relationship has been described as elastic—capable of stretching under pressure but rarely breaking completely. Heart's longevity is remarkable. The band has sold more than 35 million records and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Over the decades, Ann has also pursued solo work, including her 2018 album Immortal, and collaborations with artists like Alice in Chains. In more recent years, Ann has continued to evolve creatively. She relocated to Nashville, where she has embraced new musical influences and continued writing and recording. Despite health challenges—including surgery for cancer in 2024—she returned to performing, demonstrating the same resilience that has defined her entire career. Today, Ann Wilson remains an active and vital force in music. Heart has resumed touring, including major runs in 2024–2026, celebrating more than five decades of music. Ann continues to perform both with the band and in solo projects, while also collaborating with younger artists, ensuring her influence carries into new generations. Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Ann Wilson's story is not just her extraordinary voice, but the enduring, complicated bond with her sister Nancy. Through success, conflict, separation and reunion, their relationship has remained the emotional and creative engine of Heart. And as Ann herself has reflected, no matter the challenges, the connection between them has always been strong enough to bring them back together—on stage, where it matters most.

Okay, y'all. Buckle up for a full-body reminder: there is nothing wrong with you. In this episode, I'm throwing down the truth about judgment (yours and everyone else's), ego meltdowns, pink hair stereotypes, and what happens when you finally shut up long enough to hear what's going on in your own head. We get real about red pepper anxiety, the silent retreat that changed me, and the quote that's been living rent-free in my brain: “No one will ever love you the way you want to be loved… because that's your job.” Spoiler: there's also a blue breath meditation to clear out your throat chakra so you can speak your truth without all the noise. It's part pep talk, part truth bomb, and all heart. Let's go.

In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger, speaks to Frank, who discussed his mental health struggles, including major depressive disorder and chronic suicidal ideation, and how humor helps him cope. Frank emphasized the importance of starting conversations about suicide, noting that one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds globally. He highlighted the need for empathy and intervention to prevent suicides, sharing stories of how his talks have helped individuals. Frank aims to save a life a day through his work. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/frank-king     Highlights from today's episode include:  For some people, suicide is always an option their brain offers, even for small problems (e.g., car breaks down: "fix it / buy a new one / kill myself").  Naming it ("chronic suicidal ideation") helps people realize they're not freaks and not alone, which can be profoundly relieving and life-changing. Suicide often results from a cascade of factors, like a car accident with many causes (nighttime, rain, slick road, etc.). A simple intervention—someone asking, "Are you okay?" or showing they care—can interrupt that cascade and literally save a life (e.g., Kevin Hines on the Golden Gate Bridge). You highlight that in contexts like MAID in Canada, people are often met with serious validation of ending life but not always offered a gap—humor, caring connection, or alternative ways of seeing their situation.   ABOUT FRANK KING: Frank King, Suicide Prevention Speaker, writer for The Tonight Show for 20 years, speaker and comedian for 39. His speaking is informed by his lifetime of Depression and Suicidality and coming close enough to ending his life that he can tell you what the barrel of his gun tastes like. Turning that long dark journey of the soul into 13 TEDx Talks, sharing his lifesaving insights with corporations, and associations. He's shared the stage with comedians, Jeff Foxworthy, Adam Sandler, Jerry Seinfeld, Dr. Ken Jung, Ellen DeGeneres, Dennis Miller, and Bill Hicks, as well as entertainers, Lou Rawls, The Beach Boys, Randy Travis, and Nancy Wilson. On top of all of that, he has survived 2 aortic valve replacements, a double bypass, a heart attack, and losing to a puppet on the original Star Search and has lived to joke about it all. In our fourth installment of Surviving the 90s, we're revisiting Heart - the band that not only churned out hits across multiple decades, but played a key role in the burgeoning Seattle music scene of the 80s and 90s. Known for a string of massive hits like "Barracuda," "Crazy On You," "Magic Man,"  and more in the 70s, the chart-topping band suffered a downturn in the early 80s only to return with two successful albums, 1985's self-titled record and the 1987 follow-up Bad Animals, both of which achieved multi-Platinum status. But as the musical landscape shifted in the 90s, the band released their 1990 album Brigade to a shifting musical landscape, and doubled-down with the out-of-step Desire Walks In in 1993. Though new hits failed to materialize, they continued to remain relevant thanks to their strong ties to the Seattle scene and the undeniable talent of Ann and Nancy Wilson. We revisit their biggest hits, their activity in the 90s, and try to determine: did Heart thrive, adapt, or fade during the decade?   Songs In This Episode Intro - Barracuda 21:49 - Heartless 41:31 - Wild Child 51:16 - Will You Be There (In The Morning) Outro - Magic Man   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon.
