Robert Cutarella spent most of his childhood evenings burrowed under his pillows, a transistor radio speaker in his ear listening to the Dick Clark Show and other famous deejays. A passion for rhythm emerged during drumming sessions with wooden spoons borrowed from his aunt. At nine years-old Robert's parents took him to see drum icon Gene Krupa at the Metropole Club in midtown Manhattan. Krupa's physicality and deep passion for his craft made a lasting impression on this soon to be music industry giant. Bob had visions of owning his own company and following a career in the music industry. Robert developed an ear for rhythm, melody, and song structure through growing up in the rhythm and blues era, he earned the opportunity to play with “Do Wop” greats the Shirelle's, Dion and the Belmont's, among others. Robert then took a side road, he fell in love eventually marrying his childhood sweetheart, became a teacher, owned an antique store, sold clothes on the weekend, and played music at night. Music was pulling him to go all in, he accepted an ultimatum from his wife to make it in the music business within a year. Ten months later, Robert recorded his first album. We learn of Robert's devastating losses, heartbreaks, and betrayals, and priceless wisdom gained. Robert recalls humble beginnings, meeting clients at his first office at St. Patrick's Cathedral, returning calls on the New York City Public Library's phone booth. During the last 40 years, this music producing mastermind has produced over 3,000 songs, 160 plus platinum records, including two Grammy awards, for the Les Paul and Friends Tribute Album. Robert discovered and launched careers for some of the most prolific performers of all time including, legendary blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn, and pop singing megastar Celine Dion. This behind-the-scenes hit making genius has guided current recording giants John Legend and Lady Gaga through his songwriting mentorship programs. We are anxiously awaiting Robert's new book Mentor, we hope you glean valuable insight, and enjoy meeting this music industry superstar on this episode of Intrinsic Drive™. Legendary singer/songwriter Manchester is celebrating her fifty-year career with a new album RE:View. Following her stint as a founding member of Bette Midler's Harlettes, Melissa's tremendously successful solo career brought her critical and commercial acclaim, garnering her nineteen Billboard charted hits. She's known for “Midnight Blue”, but she received her first Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance in 1979 for the Peter Allen/Carole Bayer Sager-penned “Don't Cry Out Loud.” She went on to win the Grammy in that category four years later for the disco hit “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.” Melissa has had her songs recorded by Barbra Streisand, Roberta Flack, Alison Krauss, Kenny Loggins and many others. In 1980, she made history, by being the first artist EVER to have TWO Academy Award nominated songs in a single year, “Through The Eyes Of Love (from Ice Castles)” and “I'll Never Say Goodbye (from The Promise), and she was the first to perform both songs in the same Oscar telecast. Her charge into film continued with music for several other films including The Great Mouse Detective, Lady and the Tramp II, Dirty Girl, and Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls. In 2023, Melissa embraces her multi-faceted five-decade career with the release of her 25th album, RE:VIEW, a collection of her classic hits, revisited and reimagined. #singersongwriter #music #newmusic #newalbum #barrymanilow #bettemidler #kennyloggins #duets #musical #funnygirl #legand #musiclegend #musiclegacy

"Angles And Ordinary Men" Back in the late '90s Wendy Lands' debut album Angels and Ordinary Men landed on my desk in the form a package from Canada and I dove right in. Falling somewhere between Beth Orton's Trailer Park and Sade's Stronger Than Pride, the album was a revelation. It was soulful, it was atmospheric, it was melodic, it was rich, and it was filled with musical finesse and jazzy textures that made repeat listens more and more rewarding. So who is Wendy Lands and what in the devil has she been up to since her marvelous debut album? She's going to fill you in far better than I ever could, but let me give you some quick details: In the early '90s the Montreal-born, Toronto-raised Wendy Lands cut her musical teeth doing theatre adn playing in a pop band called Double Dare. Her debut album spawned two top 40 hits and landed her a Juno nomination for Best New Solo artist in 1997. She toured with Jann Arden, grabbed two Canadian Radio Music Award nominations and as a side hustle, she recorded a series of commercial voice overs. Remember that last bit...She moved to LA to be a songwriter, writing numbers with Paul Williams and Melissa Manchester, then moved back to Canada where she released two more fabulous albums Mumble and Altitude. This is a partial list, Wendy is going to fill in the blanks, but her main gig now is being a widely respected voice actor. Is there new music simmering? Of course there is, but I'll defer to her on that one, too. Look, Wendy Lands is wonderful. Her voice is smooth and stunning, her vocal poise is otherworldly and aside from her gifts behind the mic, she's one of the nicest people ever. www.wendylands.com (http://www.wendylands.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alegreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The roses. We forgot about the roses. Or did we? Back in 1978, the somber ice skating drama "Ice Castles" slid by the box office with barely a blip. The film would go on to become a cult classic, thanks in part to its iconic Melissa Manchester love song, "Through the Eyes of Love." But now, decades later, how does the movie hold up through the eyes of the Old Roommates' middle-aged lens? Does it take Lexie too long to lose her vision? Why did Beaulah's Regional win lead to nowhere? And what on earth is Robby Benson packin'? The Old Roommates grab some skates and revisit this sports romance. The Hustle turns 8 years old this week and we celebrate by bringing on the excellent singer/songwriter Robbie Nevil! When most of us think about Robbie we remember those late 80s hits like "C'est La Vie" and "Dominoes" and then probably wonder where he went. Robbie actually had a successful career as a writer for others before and after his solo career took over. Among the people he wrote for that we talk about are Sheena Easton, Al Jarrreau, Earth Wind and Fire, David Lee Roth, the Pointer Sisters, Melissa Manchester, Rockwell, El Debarge and many others. For a couple decades now he's made a living writing songs for placement in movies and TV shows and has excelled at that too. Robbie's been one of our dream guests since "Day 1" (get it?), so we're lucky to hear from him. Enjoy! www.robbienevil.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

She's recorded 16 critically acclaimed albums including, “Bring Back Romance”, “After Ours”, “Slow”, “Blues in the Night”, “Jazz Goes to the Movies”, 2 Christmas albums, 2 albums with her incredibly talented sister Liz Callaway. And now, following the enormous success of her tribute albums to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, she's released her highly anticipated brand new album entitled, “Fever: A Peggy Lee Celebration”, containing 14 beautiful songs made famous by the legendary Peggy Lee. The list of accolades and awards our guest has amassed, is jaw-dropping. She got a Tony award nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the hit Broadway musical “Swing”. She's won the Theater World Award, 15 MAC Awards, the Mabel Mercer Award, and the Johnny Mercer Award for Songwriting. She was voted by Broadway World as “Performer of the Year”, and 2 years in a row as “Best Jazz Vocalist”. And last year, Broadway World named her “Entertainer of the Year”. #828 - Adrienne Anderson The Adrienne Anderson Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. Are you here? Please. Won't you be here. We need and love it when you are here listening to The Paul Leslie Hour. So, your host Paul Leslie had the good fortune to see Barry Manilow and his band of talented musicians performing in Savannah, Georgia on January 15th. That's a big reason why we're playing this interview from the archives with the incomparable Adrienne Anderson. Adrienne Anderson is the very talented lyricist who was introduced to us by lyricist Marty Panzer. She is most known for the songs she co-wrote with composer Barry Manilow. You know, some of the most beloved songs recorded and performed by Barry Manilow feature the lyrics of Adrienne Anderson, including “Daybreak” and “Could It Be Magic,” and many more. Songs Adrienne Anderson wrote have been recorded by many great artists including Melissa Manchester, Bette Midler, Donna Summer and Isaac Hayes. Interesting tidbit: The late great Frank Sinatra sang a televised performance of the song “See the Show Again” on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Fans of Dionne Warwick may be familiar with Anderson's work from the song “Deja Vu” which she co-wrote with Isaac Hayes. With Peter Allen, Adrienne Anderson co-wrote “I Go to Rio” which became a signature song for Allen. The song was later covered by the band Pablo Cruise as well as Peggy Lee. We've been telling the human story for 19 years and counting. If you believe in what we do, become a patron of the spoken word. Just go right here and we thank you for listening and supporting. We take for granted that all things mesh and work fluidly together…they don't. With the grace of God absent, to borrow a line from the song “Midnight Blue” by Melissa Manchester, “even the simple things become rough.” The solution is simple, we must return to God. It's an option that is still possible, but looking less probable every day. This episode shares a message of hope as to how we can get back to where we once belonged, and see our nation and our word flourish as God in Heaven intended!Ephesians 1 “Do the Tighten Up Ya'll” Season 12 Episode 245 Data credits: Ephesian material from Bible Works, International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (ISBE), Ephesians, Epistle to, VII Teaching, 2nd Paragraph. ”Glory be to all “OwlHeads” - we gather here today to continue our investigations of “Pagey's” songwriting career. We start the show with a demo I wrote with Billy Burnette who had just joined Fleetwood Mac in the 90s… this very rare demo was aimed squarely at the Fleetwood Mac aesthetic; California here we come! I'll spin an early demo I wrote with Bernie Taupin around the time I wrote “We Built This City” and “These Dreams” with him. Although it's a technically-challenged vintage home recording, I love this obscure Taupin/Page track. It definitely has a Tears For Fears thing about it… I was writing songs around the Michael Jackson “Thriller” period, when ghouls and ghosts and zombies were all the rage (when were Zombies NOT the rage ???). I'll spin a demo Melissa Manchester recorded that I penned with Jon Lind called “Night Creatures”, on which I display my “Ghostbusters “
Larry Groce's career is quite an interesting and intriguing story. He attended high school with future recording artists Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and BW Stevenson. He became a regular performer at an NYC Upper West Side restaurant owned by Melissa Manchester's husband, and went on to record 9 albums and 36 tunes for Disney featuring children's songs including, when in 1976 he wrote “Pooh for President” for Disney to be released at Sears Stores. In 1976, his satiric novelty song "Junk Food Junkie" became a Billboard top-ten hit, and led to appearances on The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, American Bandstand, The Midnight Special, The Rich Little Show, Nashville Now, The Disney Channel, Dr. Demento, and A Prairie Home Companion. In 1983, Groce co-founded Mountain Stage, a two-hour live music program produced by West Virginia Public Radio and distributed nationally and internationally by NPR and Voice of America's satellite radio service to over 200 stations. He is its host, producer and artistic director. His musical tastes have been instrumental in defining the sound of the show. Mountain Stage was the first nationally broadcast radio or television program to feature live performances by Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow, Barenaked Ladies, Alison Krauss, Ani DiFranco, Phish, Counting Crows, Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Ben Harper, Lucinda Williams, David Gray, and The Avett Brothers. The show has also featured musical pioneers such as Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Pops Staples, and Brownie McGhee as well as modern superstars R.E.M., Martina McBride and Norah Jones. Groce retired from hosting Mountain Stage in 2021 with his successor being hit singer songwriter, and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea. Joining us on the show as co-host is John Adams from Money Concepts. We talk a bit about how Larry saved the money he earned during his career, and we even delve into how the Chuck Berry Hit “Johnny Be Good” came about. Episode 156 is here! Time to head back to 1980 to take a look at the headlines, charts, and paid advertisements in Billboard magazine, dated April 26, 1980. Arista Records sprung for an ad on the cover touting the "sensational hit single" "Fire in the Morning" by Melissa Manchester. Money well spent? Al Johnson, Ian Hunter, and Ozark Mountain Daredevils are a few of the other artists within the pages, plus an editorial from a light salesman that tries to convince the American public that disco is NOT dead.
