At the end of the year, media outlets make lots of lists, so many lists that there's even one for best jazz recordings.  At the start of the following year, the bastards pick one lucky list to listen through and question every step of the way.  This time it's the Times' turn, and Mike is especially skeptical of the paper's first four choices.  Pat's just happy things didn't turn out worse.  Honestly, these are all good records and who can say which are the "best"?  In pop matters, Peter Gabriel gets the boys talking well past closing time.

All Music Used With Permission from Orrin Evans For more than two decades pianist Orrin Evans has made an art form of the unexpected. With more than 25 albums to his credit, Evans has become the model of a fiercely independent artist who's made a habit of rattling the jazz world's confining cages. That determination has paid off in accolades like topping the “Rising Star Pianist” category in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll and two Grammy nominations. As a daring pianist, Evans combines raw-edged vigor and left-field nuance into a sound wholly his own. This week, on the program, Orrin joined us recently with his trio to celebrate the Bop Stop's ninth anniversary, and we'll present both highlights from that show, along with selections from his prior appearances on the program. Featuring Luques Curtis on Bass, Mark Whitfield Junior on drums, and Orrin Evans on Piano, here's the best of the Orrin Evans Trio - Live at the Bop Stop.

CEO Kimmerly Nace is dedicated to changing the narrative on how we see our waste.  She's passionate about making this planet, or rather making its people work better for a sustainable planet for all of us, creatures large and small.  Imagine a world where our toughest waste issues become some of our most profitable revenue centers? Literally turning problems into profit; using our existing financial incentives for good and not greed.  We spoke about her team at Brightwater Tools of Brattleboro, VT and it's origin story in the international mission organization she also founded the Rich Earth Institute.  Today's discussion is on regenerative sanitation.  Realizing better nutrient management by diverting the worst offending liquid, our urine, out of the water system and into our soils for crop production.   Or as I like to say, making our Pee pay. That's the latest from SMG's ‘Are We Here Yet?' podcast.  …And in the Jazz Room…We met pianist/composer, Orrin Evans at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.  In part two of this interview we talk about the origins of several songs featured on his CD “The Red Door” and learn about the musicians who are featured on this recording. Startup founders: today's audio plat savoureux from the Innova802 crew focused on our guest Matt Cropp, executive director of the Vermont Employee Ownership Center (VEOC). We discussed why you need to consider your future exit now at the onset of your enterprise and why you should take a serious look at forming an employee-owned enterprise and how. The history of tech and tech enabled companies since the post WWII years is a history of equity sharing so it's often a short walk for companies to consider employee ownership (co-operative models, employee stock ownership plan (ESOP)).   We defined how these models work alongside equity-sharing and market-rate employment and what benefits come to founders and when.  Most notable we'll tell you how creating an ESOP and planning for a liquidity event are not mutually exclusive.  We tie the combination of tech business culture and employee ownership to rural development.  How these elements can and should be used to transform communities throughout fly-over, USA. BTW, Watch closely, that is if we see forward momentum in Congress, of an important piece of legislation for incentivising more employee ownership called the Employee Equity Investment Act.   Other work of note by MacKenzie Wark Mentioned by co-host Will Jeffries : Slicing Pie(Fair Equity investment tool)  And in the Jazz Room…We met pianist/composer, Orrin Evans at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival.  In part one of this interview we talk about his CD “The Red Door”, the meaning of red, the Jazz Train and Jazz elders. The shoes that grace the cover of Orrin Evans' new record are special shoes from his childhood that were necessitated by being born with neurofibromatosis. The record is called Walk a Mile in My Shoe, and the shoes are a reminder of his condition and the impact that this neurological disorder has had on him. However, Evans yearns to move past the initial metaphor of the title in order to convey the ideas of feeling worthy and taking ownership of his journey. In this episode of LINER NOTES Orrin talks about the music, the musicians, and the music business.

We had the distinct Pleasure to speak with Daniel Parkins with a rather broad question to answer: What does the way we assign value to commerce, global policy, culture and just about everything else in our community tell us about our society.  Does it reflect our weaknesses or our strengths? What does it say about the health of our communities, about the health of our inner self? In an era where most of us question globalization, where students are questioning our values while taking to the streets in protest, just what are we getting right and what are we getting wrong?  That's next here on the Are We Here Yet? Podcast.  Daniel Parkins is founder of Community Wealth Development LLC (CWD), a grassroots consulting firm, dedicated to generating local community ownership over economic initiatives and social programs intended to generate wealth in their community. Through expanding access to justice and creating new economic opportunity for local residents, CWD is committed to building strategic partnerships that foster strength through diversity and that are formed for the sake of equity building within communities and for the benefit of communities.  He helps businesses and local civic leaders work with communities to transform conflicts, launch impact initiatives, and achieve sustainable growth.  Daniel and I spoke with on the subject of Peace in episode 135 of this podcast.  And In the Jazz Room… We met pianist/composer, Orrin Evans at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival. In part two we talk about the origins of a couple of songs featured on his CD and learn about the musicians who are on this CD with him. Find more on Orrin Evans right here.

The folks at Vermont-based medtech startup Aprexis are no strangers to the definition of persistence.  This is the just the start of why the podcast desired to talk with co-founders Mike Howe, Rob Squire and Carrie LeCompte.   In this episode you'll learn the importance for rooting a medtech solutions company from the clinicians perspective.  We spoke at length regarding the challenges unique to medtech software firms, namely the challenge to working in an iterative technology that comes up against regulatory imperatives for launching fully developed.  We defined MTM or medication therapy management and discussed the growing marketplace as professionals in pharmacology work with a growing geriatric population in an ever-expanding pharma-marketplace.  And in The Jazz Room… We met pianist/composer, Orrin Evans at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival. In part one of this interview we talk about his CD “The Red Door”, the meaning of Red, the Jazz Train and Jazz elders.

Artistically ambitious, a rare woman in a male dominated scene, taking the road less travelled, or even the road never travelled, and with her feet well on the ground business-wise side to ensure her artistic independence, Carla Bley played a key role in giving today's music scene the shape we know. This week we concentrate on some of her signature compositions, focusing on her Church side, her Big Band side, her catchy side, her electric side, and some of the musicians that embraced her work early on. We each have our own history with the City of Brotherly Love, so on this first episode of The Late Set, we'll compare notes — and check in with an absolute authority on the subject, pianist Orrin Evans. He has thoughts (a lot of thoughts) about what it means to be a Philly cat, how to describe “the Philly sound,” and how we should feel about the scene. Caleb Wheeler Curtis designs playgrounds for his band members when he composes, creating opportunities for improvisation within a structured framework. It's all about space to freely express oneself. This Ann Arbor, Michigan native who now lives in Brooklyn, New York City, has recently released to critical acclaim his fifth album, Heatmap. Caleb and I spent some time talking about this recording and his growth as a musician.  Caleb is the consummate collaborator with a discography that details a journey full of an adventure in music.  Beginning with Walking Distance: Neighborhood in 2015, Caleb's relationships weaved a path rich with partnerships and mentors who provided a foundation for him, that guided him in his writings and arrangements. He is the first one to tell you that getting to the place where he considered himself to be a professional musician was not easy. Caleb firmly believes it requires commitment to your art.  Caleb is fortunate to have Imani Records producer and owner and Grammy nominee Orrin Evans as a mentor, giving him opportunities to stretch as a musician and guidance as a composer and bandleader. Heatmap, produced by Orrin Evans, is a product of such collaborations and mentorships. Caleb played in Evans' band, Captain Black Big Band, performing on his two Grammy nominated recordings. He and Orrin Evans developed a bond that Caleb identifies as critical to his growth as a musician and composer.  Caleb's compositions reflect an approach that provides space for each musician to expand and bring to the experience their own artistry and talent thus giving his compositions a fresh breath for improvising. His approach is strong without being forced; one critic acknowledges. And while his musical spirit has an open willingness for exploration, his musical upbringing with strong mentorship gives it an inherent wisdom.  Caleb Wheeler Curtis was a MacDowell Fellow, an artist's residency program in rural Peterborough, New Hampshire. There, Caleb was given his own space and time to compose, play the piano uninterrupted by the daily forces of urban life. The end-product, 10 originals on which Caleb plays on alto saxophone except for one track on soprano. Heatmap features, of course Curtis on saxophone, Orrin Evans on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Gerald Cleaver on the drums. Caleb and his band can be heard on two tracks played in their entirety on Strictly Jazz Sounds. I asked him to explain his composition style.  His credits as a collaborator, composer and saxophonist (mostly alto) led to recordings from Freebird featuring Jason Moran in 2018. Curtis also teamed up to record Curtis+Garabedian+Sperrazza: New York in 2018 with Vinnie Sperrazza and Noah Garabedian; and Curtis/Carter/Ferber: Doing Nothing Is Hard Business, a project that included Rahsaan Carter and Mark Ferber in 2020. Curtis's discography also includes playing on two Grammy-nominated recordings with the Orrin Evans-led group the Captain Black Big Band: Presence, released in 2018 and The Intangible Between, dropped in 2020. Curtis released two albums for the Orrin Evans-owned record label Imani, Brothers in 2018 and Ain't No Storm in 2021. It doesn't stop there. In 2021 Curtis collaborated to release two recordings, No One Is Anyone, with Noah Garabedian, Vinnie Sperrazza and Orrin Evans and Substrate with Swiss pianist Laurent Nicoud. Caleb earned a music degree from Michigan State University, and later a masters in music from William Paterson University. Since then, he has focused on the New York jazz scene from Brooklyn.

A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter's past, present, and future has always embodied music. From church Boy choirs at the age of six to the American Boy choir school in Princeton to the University of North Texas on a vocal jazz scholarship, Walter has become a pioneer of improvisation and electronic innovations in the world of jazz. His recording career spans 20 years and his purist progressive approach to jazz music has been recognized worldwide. After extended studies in Amsterdam with Jazz vocal Icon, Deborah Brown, Walter returned to the U.S. and embedded himself in the New York Jazz scene. It was in New York, surrounded by visionaries of jazz, where he began to organically develop his liberated, vibrant style that turned him from straight-ahead to progressive jazz singing. Walter's recordings include, "Dressed in a Song", “Sirens in the C-House,” “Clear Day,” “Dedicated to You,” “2Bass, a Face and a Little Skin,” “Live in Portugal,” “Live at the 55 Bar,” “One Step Away,” and Guest appearances on over 100 recordings. The latest album, released on February 7, 2020, testifies to his personal progression as an evolving artisan and provides an intimate, inventive collection of standards and originals. “Dressed in a Song,” produced by Walter and Grammy-winning producer and A&R executive Al Pryor, features piano and vocal duets and trios with veterans and up-and-comers alike, including Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Jean-Michel Pilc, Marc Cary, Taylor Eigsti, Julius Rodriguez, Ben Wolfe, Obed Calvaire, and Becca Stevens. Over the decades, Walter has performed as a featured artist at numerous American jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Central America as well as over 80 tours in Russia. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy's Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues. He has shared the stage with legendary artists, ranging from Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez, Bob Dorough, Nicholas Payton, Ben Monder, Sean Jones, Jean-Michel Pilc, Bill Evans, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Tim Warfield, Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Seamus Blake, Igor Butman, Nasheet Waits, Craig Handy, Boris Kozlov, Robin Eubanks, Eric Revis, Billy Drummond, Christian McBride, Adam Nussbaum.
