Playlist: Seven Steps to Heaven Miles Davis (trompet), Ron Carter (bas), Anthony Williams, Frank Butler (drums), Herbie Hancock, Victor Feldman (piano), George Coleman (tenorsax), Nefertiti Miles Davis (trompet), Wayne Shorter (tenorsax), Tony Williams (drums), Ron Carter (bas), Herbie Hancock (piano) Boplicity Miles Davi (trompet), Lee Konitz (altsax), Gerry Mulligan (baritonsax), John Lewis (piano), Kenny Clark (drums), Nelson Boyd (bas)J.J. (drums), John Scofield (gitaar), Robert Irving III (keyboards), Round Midnight Miles Davis (trompet), John Coltrane (tenorsax), Cannonball Adderly (altsax), Red Garland (piano), Paul Chambers (bas), Philly Jo Jones (drums) Jam Session Miles Davis (trompet), Michel Legrand (piano), Jimmy Cleveland (trombone), Kenny Garrett (sax), Mark Rivett (gitaar), Alphonse Mouzon, Harvey Mason (drums), Benny Reitveld (bas) Een paar bespiegelingen…

On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years. From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together. We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. The latest 95bFM Jazz Show with Def Jim features the work of a number of notable contemporary guitarists, including Miles Okazaki, Julian Lage, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Nels Cline and Terje Rypdal. Following the death of Country Joe McDonald in early March, tribute is paid in the form of a classic Country Joe & The Fish track from the late 60's which has Def Jim remembering that at one time there was a tradition of playing a not-jazz track almost every Jazz Show, a custom which has now lapsed. This Jazz Show finishes with a Michel Benebig Quartet piece recorded live at the ATO Jazz Club in New Lynn, Auckland - out now on Rattle Records.

In this episode, I'm joined by Simon Oslender, and I'm not exaggerating when I say his playing lit me up the first time I heard it: pure joy, but with real depth underneath. We talk about growing up in a deeply musical home, starting on drums, and the exact “big bang” moment when a John Mayall live DVD (and Tom Canning on Hammond B3) made Simon lock in on the organ for life.We get into Simon's early recording experiments, how he writes (often away from the instrument, grabbing voice memos before ideas disappear), and his relationship with theory—especially his favorite framing: theory shouldn't tell you what to do, it should explain what you're hearing. And then we go deep on the dream-team reality of All That Matters: recording with Steve Gadd and Will Lee and how that session turned into a tour, and what it takes to keep your head straight when your heroes show up fully prepared to play your music.Music from the Episode:On a Roll (Simon Oslender)In Good Hands (Simon Oslender)Cruisin' (Simon Oslender)Quite Logical (Simon Oslender)Thank you for listening.

New York-based drummer and educator Matt Wilson has performed with and/or played on many recordings by other musicians - Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, among others - and leads ensembles of his own, but at this time of year, the thing he might be best known for is his Christmas Tree-O. And yes, he went there – putting a pun right in the band's name. The trio, featuring multi-reed player Jeff Lederer and bassist Paul Sikivie, takes holiday tunes as a whimsical jumping off point for a variety of jazz styles, from swing to free improv. Their recent album is called Tree Jazz – The Shape Of Christmas To Come, and they're here to play their gleeful, irreverent, and sometimes nerdy takes on music of the season, in-studio.Set list: 1. Up on the Rooftop 2. Good King Wenceslas 3. Shine Your Light

For the final episode of the year, I'm joined by John Scofield, founder and partner of S3 Group—one of Washington's most respected government affairs firms.John's career arc mirrors the evolution of influence in Washington. He began as a highly regarded communicator on the House Appropriations Committee, where he learned firsthand how policy, process and power intersect. He later brought that experience to the private sector, building a government affairs practice that clients actively seek out— but because they get results. In our conversation, John and I talk about:* What separates effective government affairs shops from the rest* How Hill experience shapes credibility outside the institution* Why trust, preparation and institutional knowledge still matter in a rapidly changing town* And how the best lobbyists think less about access—and more about outcomesThis episode also marks an important moment for The Friday Reporter. As we close out the year, I'm announcing that In the Lobby and The Friday Reporter are officially merging into one unified show: The Friday Reporter—continuing to air, as always, on Fridays. This evolution creates room for new, exciting programming in 2026—while staying true to the original goal of the show: smart conversations with people who understand how influence really works.Thank you for listening this year.

What's up, dudes? There's nothing like a Christmas jazz house song to kick off a party. I've got Steve Beech of Uplifting House Sessions with me to dive into the opening track of Winter Warnerland! Yes, we're talking Jeff Lorber “God Rest the House!”Jeff Lorber is an American keyboardist and composer specializing in jazz and fusion. After attending the Berklee College of Music, he played with Michael Brecker and John Scofield. Eventually he started Jeff Lorber Fusion and released his first album in 1977. He frequently played on Rhodes, Minimoog, and Prophet 5 keyboards. He subsequently went solo and had several singles on Billboard Dance charts. As the Winter Warnerland liner notes state:“He's the guy who first brought you Karen White with their smash hit, The Facts of Love. Kenny G, his former sax player and right now is one of the hottest session cats out there. You can hear his magic touch on current hits from U2, Pebbles, New Edition, Giant Steps, New Shoes, The California Raisins, Sheena Easton and Jeffrey Osborne. Those are just the ones he's played on this month. And you know he's saving up the good stuff for his next WB LP due sometime in 89. Even though he's a busy guy, he managed to crank out a hot house mix version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen for us. Turn it up!”Driving bass line? Check. Syncopated version of the melody? Got it. In this episode, I'm joined by John Mailander, a fearless and lyrical fiddler/violinist whose work bridges bluegrass, jazz, ambient improvisation, and songcraft. We trace his path from San Diego to Berklee (where he studied American Roots with mentor Darol Anger) to Nashville, where he found a close-knit community that's as experimental as it is supportive. John discusses the city's “weirdo music” scene, ambient nights, free improvisation, and oddball collaborations, and how that energy coexists alongside the touring calendar. We dig into his life-changing chair with Bruce Hornsby: the no-setlist ethos, learning the “top 80” deep-cut originals, living on the edge together, and the night Bruce rearranged the stage so John could stand next to John Scofield, then kept tossing them intertwined solos all evening. John shares recent runs with Sam Grisman (with hero Peter Rowan onboard), producing and recording more from Nashville, and the origin of his own band Forecast, a genre-porous collective inspired by Bill Frisell, Brian Blade Fellowship, Pat Metheny/Brad Mehldau, and Joni Mitchell. We talk through the new record Let the World In: how residency nights at Dee's in Madison shaped the tunes, why the drums sound so alive, and why he welcomes rotating lineups to hear the same music through new lenses. Teaching and mentorship thread through the conversation: passing on what was given to him (formally and backstage between songs), honoring influences like Matt Mundy (ARU/Bruce Hampton), and why the point isn't “pushing boundaries” as a goal but playing honestly enough that the music pushes itself. It's a generous, grounded conversation about trust, curiosity, and letting the music lead.To learn more about John, visit his website. John Scofield is undeniably one of the preeminent forces in contemporary jazz guitar. Along with a few of his peers—see Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Mike Stern—he modernized the sound of our instrument and the genre. But there's much more to Scofield than just jazz.To break down the deepest of Scofield's records and talk about the intricacies of his playing, we called up another great, Adam Levy. There's a great chance you've heard Levy alongside artists such as Tracy Chapman or Norah Jones, and his solo discography is deep! Adam has a host of Scofield know-how, so we get right to it. From shaping the sound of the Pat Metheny Group, to scoring Alejandro Iñárritu's Oscar-winning film Birdman, to composing for Apple TV+'s The Studio, Antonio has pushed the boundaries of what a drummer can be. With 4 GRAMMY wins, a 2025 Emmy nomination, and collaborations spanning jazz, film, and world music, his artistry continues to inspire musicians and audiences worldwide. This is a 2.5 hour deep dive interview with Antonio that covers the full scope of his career. We talk about his journey from Mexico City to Berklee and how he got onto the world stage, the story behind creating the all-drum score for Birdman, and what it was like to spend decades working side by side with Pat Metheny. We dig into the lessons he's carried forward, his approach to film scoring, and how he brings storytelling into his drumming. We also get into his newest projects like Bad Hombre 1 and 2, BEATrio with Béla Fleck and Edmar Castañeda, Elipsis with Michael League and Pedrito Martínez, and his collabs with Dave Matthews, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Silvana Estrada, Joe Lovano, John Patitucci, Christian McBride, John Scofield and more, as he continues to expand his musical universe. This week's guest is Billy Martin ... a world-renowned drummer, educator, visual artist, producer, and author. He has collaborated with some of the best, including (but certainly not limited to) John Scofield, John Zorn, Iggy Pop, Natalie Merchant, Flea and many more. Still, many people know him best for his work with Medeski, Martin & Wood, alongside John Medeski and Chris Wood. If you enjoy this episode, please go check out Billy's interview with Mike Dawson on the Drum Candy podcast titled “Improvising and Cultivating a Creative Mindset”. I recently re-watched his anti-instructional film, Life on Drums, and I can't recommend it enough. It's essentially a series of conversations between Martin and his first drum teacher, Allen Herman. These discussions delve into topics such as soloing, time, tone, phrasing, free playing, and so much more. Interspersed throughout are some pretty rad solo and duet performances…all filmed with a cinematic aesthetic. So check that out if that interests you. Right off the bat, we dive into the topic of soloing — something Billy encourages all drummers to do first thing when they sit behind the kit (even if just for five minutes), before jumping into the records that shaped him into the remarkable musician he is today. The drummer and percussionist Billy Martin, whose name many Time Sensitive listeners may recognize—he created the Time Sensitive theme song—defies any boxed-in or limiting definitions of his work. Best known as a member of the band Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW), he's spent the past three-plus decades making experimental, boundary-pushing, and uncategorizable instrumental jazz-funk-groove music, shaping sounds that feel as expansive as they are definitive and distinctive. Across all his artistic output, Martin continually, meditatively searches for harmony. He is also a composer, a teacher, a visual artist, and a builder and craftsman. His expansive creative practice comes most alive at his home in Englewood, New Jersey, where he has cultivated a bamboo garden, crafted his own Japanese-style teahouse, and constructed a music studio. Martin is someone for whom rhythm is not just something heard, but also seen and felt.On the episode, he talks about his MMW journey at length, his concept of “rhythmic harmony,” and why he views sound creation as a sacred act.Special thanks to our Season 11 presenting sponsor, Van Cleef & Arpels.Show notes:Billy Martin[7:31] Medeski Martin & Wood[7:31] John Medeski[7:31] Chris Wood[7:31] “Not Not Jazz” (2024)[10:12] Iggy Pop's “Avenue B” (1999)[10:12] Don Was[11:27] “The Lover” (1995)[11:27] “Friday Afternoon in the Universe” (1995)[11:27] “Old Angel Midnight” (1973) by Jack Kerouac[13:44] Ra-Kalam Bob Moses[13:44] John Scofield[13:44] David Baker[15:57] “Shuck It Up” (1993)[15:57] “It's a Jungle in Here” (1993)[18:12] “Latin Shuffle” (1998)[18:12] “Combustication” (1998)[18:12] Frankie Malabe[18:12] Art Blakey[33:25] Thelonious Monk[33:58] “Life on Drums” (2011)[38:32] John Bonham[38:32] Charlie Watts[38:32] Stewart Copeland[38:32] Elvin Jones[38:32] Max Roach[38:32] Danny Richmond[38:32] Charles Mingus[38:32] Jack DeJohnette[38:32] Joe Morello[38:32] Roy Haynes[38:32] Stan Getz[38:32] Airto Moreira[38:32] Naná Vasconcelos[38:32] Babatunde Olatunji[39:58] Gus Johnson[39:58] “Whatever Happened to Gus” (1998)[39:58] Steve Cannon[40:54] “Chubb Sub” (1995)[40:54] ”Uncle Chubb” (1992)[46:41] “Shack-man” (1996)[47:06] “Drumming Birds” (2004)[54:48] “Bamboo Rainsticks” (1999)[54:48] Amulet Records[1:00:23] Creative Music Studio

Mark-Anthony Turnage is a composer of contemporary classical music. Once called “Britain's hippest composer”, he has been in a rock band, got drunk with Francis Bacon, and tackled anything from drug abuse to football in his works. Mark was born in June 1960 in the Thames estuary town of Corringham in Essex. His musical talent was nurtured by his parents and he studied composition at the junior department at the Royal College of Music from aged fourteen. There he met the composer Oliver Knussen who became his tutor, mentor, and life-long friend. His first performed work, Night Dances, written while still at the Royal College, won a prize and heralded Mark's evolution into what one critic calls “one of the best known British composers of his generation, widely admired for his highly personal mixture of energy and elegy, tough and tender”. Greek, his debut opera, a reimagining of the Oedipus myth whose protagonist is a racist, violent and foul-mouthed football hooligan, shocked the establishment, which flinched, but accepted “Turnage, the trouble-maker” as a forceful voice. Over the past four decades he has sustained a distinguished and productive career that has seen him working closely with conductors of the stature of Bernard Haitink, Esa-Pekka Salonen and, particularly, Simon Rattle. He has been attached to prestigious institutions, such as English National Opera and both the BBC and Chicago symphony orchestras, and has written a vast range of music for many different instruments and ensembles. His influences include soul, gospel, all sorts of jazz and the great symphonic works of the repertoire. He has written operas, ballets, concertos, chamber pieces and choral works together with orchestrating a football match. His key works include Three Screaming Popes and Blood on the Floor (both inspired by Francis Bacon paintings, and the latter containing an elegy for his younger brother, Andrew, who died of a drug overdose in 1995), as well as more operas including one about the former Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. They have a new album called Tree Jazz – The Shape Of Christmas To Come, and they're here to play their gleeful, irreverent, and sometimes nerdy takes on music of the season, in-studio. Set list: 1. Up on the Rooftop 2. Good King Wenceslas 3. Shine Your Light

From time to time, we take stock of the most exciting releases that have landed on our desks, and hard drives. Usually, we do it twice a year, in June and in December. However, we have already accumulated so much great material since June that there was no point in waiting until December to start sharing some of the songs we have been putting aside for our ‘favorites' playlist'. So, here we go... The playlist features Amy Gadiaga; Chris Jennings; Milton Nascimento, Esperanza Spalding; KNOBIL [pictured]; Aaron Parks; Ella Zirina; Jihye Lee Orchestra; Franco Ambrosetti and John Scofield. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/19693022/Mondo-Jazz (up to "Soul Eyes"). Happy listening! Photo credit: Anatholie
