The Blockbuster Babes reunite with Breakfast host Pam Boland for the latest edition of Movie Squad, discussing a couple of films about… couples! First up, Tristan Fidler leads a review of Bong Joon-ho's long-awaited Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson as a regularly-reprinted ‘expendable' clone who survives his '17th death' on a remote ice planet and accidentally meets his successor, Mickey 18, also played by Pattinson. Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette star alongside the double Roberts in the latest from the South Korean director of Parasite. Then, Simon Miraudo reviews the second Steven Soderbergh film of 2025 (after last month's Presence): the slinky espionage thriller Black Bag, in which Michael Fassbender's married MI5 agent begins investigating his spy wife, played by Cate Blanchett, of a suspected betrayal. Black Bag also features Marisa Abela, Regé-Jean Page and Naomie Harris. Both films are now in Australian cinemas. Stay tuned for a pod-exclusive review of Grand Theft Hamlet, the hilarious new documentary about out-of-work actors attempting to stage a production by William Shakespeare entirely within the open world video game GTA. Then, hear Simon's chat with Jessica Palud, director of Being Maria, which stars Anamaria Vartolomei as actress Maria Schneider and follows Maria as a 19-year-old on the set of Last Tango in Paris, and how her life was altered by a shocking and unprompted on-camera violation by her co-star Marlon Brando and director Bernardo Bertolucci. Claire Cope - Every Journey

Send us your thoughts! An oft-repeated Chinese proverb states, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Looking back from a vantage point several steps along her own proverbial journey, British composer and pianist Claire Cope came to discover that no matter how daunting a venture may become, it's always taking that first step that requires the most courage. That realization provided the inspiration behind Every Journey, the gorgeous second album by Cope's Ensemble C.Every Journey will be released on March 7, 2025, to coincide with International Women's Day on March 8. The occasion is significant given the fount of inspiration that Cope found in the stories of intrepid women pioneers who undertook their own daring journeys. The books of writer and explorer Jacki Hill-Murphy were key resources – specifically Adventuresses, a compendium of stories of 18th and 19th-century female explorers, and The Extraordinary Tale of Kate Marsden, about a Victorian nurse who trekked across pre-Revolutionary Russia to find a possible cure for leprosy. Musically, the groundbreaking compositions of Maria Schneider provided a luminous north star for Cope's own writing.Arriving five years after Ensemble C's acclaimed debut, Small World, Cope's follow-up represents significant evolutions in both the composer's life and her musical vision. Where Small World offered Cope's introductory statement as a composer, a path she arrived at onlygradually, Every Journey is a remarkably assured expansion of that mindset. Significantly, Ensemble C has bloomed from a septet to an 11-piece group, allowing for a wealth of new colors and possibilities, of which Cope takes bold and vibrant advantage. The intricate music she's devised for the ensemble reflects her existence in both the jazz and contemporary classical music realms. Closer to home, Cope became a mother in the interval between albums, a development that can't help but deepen one's insight and empathy.Support the show

Hi everybody, my truly special Talk Music guest for this episode is ESTONIAN PIANIST KRISTJAN RANDALU, who exists among the most sought-after piano players of his generation, carrying the torch in both the improvised world of jazz and the traditional realm of classical music. Between creating his own original blend of contemporary jazz as a leader and collaborating with several generations of respected musicians, Randalu has brought his music to some of the world's most renowned jazz festivals and concert halls. The prestigious magazine Jazz Times describes Kristjan's playing as an “open invitation to an unnameable exotic land." At the same time, he is viewed as an esteemed interpreter of a broad spectrum of contemporary and classical music, performing alongside internationally acclaimed orchestras and conductors. We chat about how Kristjan was born in Estonia's capital Tallinn and how his family escaped Communist rule by relocating to Germany where he graduated from the Stuttgart Music University. Kristjan then went on to study at The Royal Academy of Music in London, followed by the Manhattan School of Music where he attained an additional master´s degree. We also delve into some of his most recent recordings including Sisu (awarded Jazz Album of the Year at the 2023 Estonian Music Awards) and Schumann's Dichterliebe (Berlin Classics, 2024) whereby Randalu has not only deepened his musical ties to the classical world, but presented a truly original recasting of one of the Romantic repertoire's cornerstones. We discuss his recordings with saxophonist Dave Liebman (Mussorgsky Pictures Revisited), Bodek Janke (Double Standard) and his album “Absence,” produced by Legendary owner of the ECM label, Manfred Eicher. Coming soon, his collaboration with Martin Kuuskmann (Schubert Voyage, release in March 2025 on Berlin Classics). Kristjan's list of musical partners include: Eivind Aarset, Mark Guiliana, Dieter llg, Marilyn Mazur, Nils Petter Molvaer, Claudio Puntin, Nguyen Le, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Petros Klampanis, Dhafer Youssef, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the New Chamber Orchestra of Berlin, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, the London Symphony, Dennis Russell Davies, Paavo Järvi, Kristjan Järvi and Maria Schneider. With a discography of over 50 albums under his belt (including a Grammy-nominated recording) and numerous awards to his name (including “Jazz Artist of the Year” and “Jazz Composer of the year” in Estonia), Randalu's prolific body of work continues to grow in breadth and quality. His unique voice is becoming internationally more and more important. This was for me a most interesting deep dive into an amazing musician and fellow Estonian! Whenever I can attend a performance you will always find me in the front row! Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

There's a not so polite saying about teaching music and music teachers that goes like this: If you can, play. If you can't, teach. That is what jazz legend Ellis Marsalis once said to a Detroit drummer who was considering becoming a music teacher. I'm talking about drummer, educator, producer and band leader Clarence Penn. Fortunately, Clarence did not take it to heart, eventually acquiring a master's in music education from Rutgers University. It was also to the benefit of future musicians who became Clarence's students.  In this episode, Clarence Penn and I engage in deep reflection on jazz and jazz music instruction. He started playing music with the drum set influenced by his drummer neighbor Ricky Hudson around eight years old. In 1986, while still in high school, he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy where Clarence focused on classical percussion aiming to be a timpanist, but later eventually committed to jazz in high school after meeting NEA Jazz Master, trumpeter, and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Music Director, Wynton Marsalis. He started studying at the University of Miami in Florida in 1986 but transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University which is when he began working with the great Ellis Marsalis. The conversation navigates his brief stint with trumpet, his preference for jazz over classical due to its broader voice and creativity and reflects on the evolving definition of jazz. The discussion also delves into his teaching philosophy, emphasizing individualized attention, deliberate practice, and the importance of being a well-rounded person. What Ellis Marsalis said about teaching, he later retracted when Clarence told him he was pursuing a master's at Rutgers in music education. He said, according to Clarence, “…that those who can play, teach,” thus giving Clarence his blessing. Clarence Penn also talks about various influences and collaborations, his views on the business of being a musician, and his expressive performance style. He mentions his project with the 2025 Grammy nominated American Patchwork Quartet, its diverse cultural influences, and explains his latest album 'Behind the Voice', which pays homage to drummers who have significantly impacted music. His resume more so lays out his career as a jazz musician than a teacher of percussion instruments, performing with Ellis and Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Stanley Clark, Betty Carter, Christian Sands, Lakecia Benjamin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Kurt Elling, among many other highly accomplished musicians. He concludes by discussing the importance of teaching as therapy and the rewarding relationships with students. In this episode, we'll listen to three tracks of music, thanks to Origin Records. Two will come from Clarence Penn's latest project, Behind the Voice, released in 2024, more so a R&B/soul sound that has enormously brilliant drumming and keyboards by Clarence. The third track comes from his 2014 recording, Monk: The Lost Files, a highly acclaimed release that revisits some of the most memorable compositions by jazz legend Thelonious Monk.   You will hear the first song just prior to the conversation opening. 1. “Send One Your Love” (Steve Wonder)-Behind the Voice-3:15; Clarence Penn-drums, percussion, keyboards, vocoder; Aaron Marcellus-vocals; The second track will play at about 31 minutes into the program. 2. “Hackensack”: Monk: The Lost Files; Chad Lefkowitz-Brown - Saxes; Donald Vega-Piano; Yasushi Nakamura - Acoustic & Electric Bass; Clarence Penn - Drums, producer-arranger. The third song will close the conversation. 3. “You Are” (Clarence Penn, Tyrone Corbett), Behind the Voice -3:52; Clarence Penn—drums, percussion, keyboards, vocoder; Chelsea Jackson-vocals; Yasushi Nakamura-bass Thank you for listening. I know there are many podcasts for you to enjoy so it means a great deal to me that you are spending time with this conversation.

We examine local real estate markets and the unique mix of property and economic development components at the local level here at the ‘Are We Here Yet?' podcast so our listeners can find inspiration for their own local efforts back home.  This episode host Scott Graves sat down with Ed Bove, Executive Director of the Rutland Redevelopment Authority in Scott's adoptive hometown of Rutland, VT.  Scott found resonance with Ed in their shared interest in incremental development and generally a ‘Strong Towns' approach to neighborhood building.    Listen to our interview with Strong Towns founder Charles Marohn from 2021. The discussion centered on how Rutland and the RRA are working to assist private developers to realize current Mayor Mike Doenges goal of 1000 units of housing in 5 years.   Given Vermont's past as an often development-resistant region, this may seem like a tall order.  There is little consensus on whether we need more housing at the broadest level, though municipal and state leadership understand there is a housing crisis affecting all of us, particularly working-class people in Vermont. Additional housing needs range from the state's number of 36,000 units, Vermont Futures Project estimate a bit higher and to those estimates by Knowledge Towns of 75,000 or more.   Listen to our interview with Kevin Chu, Vermont Futures Project  Listen to our interview with Dominic Endicott, co-author of Knowledge Towns There is even more difference of opinion when it comes to what kind of housing and for whom it might be built for.  Far from a complaint session, our discussion centered on the solutions being implemented through Ed and the RRA's efforts along with other municipal players.   Our conversation gave us an opportunity to discuss the efforts of Breaking Housing Matters, a national housing initiative working on a pilot in Rutland, VT.    Listen to our interview with BHM founder Peter de Krassel Ed's thoughts immediately went to the innovative parts of BHM in creating new streams of development capital, an essential part of creating more interest in Rutland and the state of Vermont from emerging developers both local and from afar.  And in the Jazz Room…We met with Orchestra Leader/Composer Maria Schneider at the Newport Jazz Festival. Early August is usually something of a lull in the film calendar, but this year, at least in New York City, it's proved to be a goldmine—particularly for repertory programming. We had planned to record a single episode of our Rep Report series this week, but there was so much good stuff out there that we ended up recording three different conversations about three different programs, which we'll be sharing over the next few days. Stay tuned!  On today's episode, Jed Rapfogel, film programmer at Anthology Film Archives, joins Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute to discuss Verbatim, a new film series he's put together at the famed New York City theater. Verbatim features an exciting and wide-ranging lineup of titles, spanning features, shorts, experimental films, and made-for-TV titles that are all united by one theme: each of them makes verbatim use of a real-life transcript—be it a court document, a journalistic interview, a letter, or something else. Jed, Clint, and Devika share some of the highlights of the series, including James N. Kienitz Wilkins's Public Hearing (2012), which uses the transcript of a municipal town-hall about the expansion of a Walmart, James Benning's Landscape Suicide (1986), which recreates interviews with a pair of killers, and Elisabeth Subrin's short film, Maria Schneider, 1983 (2022), which offers three different riffs on an archival television interview with the titular actress. Verbatim runs at Anthology Film Archives through August 13. For interested viewers outside of New York City, check out filmcomment.com for streaming links to some of the featured films.

Shuchi Talati's first feature-length film, "Girls Will Be Girls", tells the story of 16-year-old Mira, a model student at an elite Himalayan boarding school who gets swept up in a budding romance with a new male student. Things get complicated when Mira's mother inserts herself into their relationship. Talati says she wanted to tell a story about sexual awakening without the shame she experienced in her own adolescence. While the film's dynamic has been described as a love triangle, she says it's really about two generations of women trying to push back against societal boundaries. Plus, film critic Lisa Nesselson tells us about Jessica Palud's "Being Maria", which explores how French actress Maria Schneider was traumatised by a now-infamous sex scene in the 1972 film "Last Tango in Paris".

Barbara Bruckmüller is a composer and jazz pianist born in Vienna. She was influenced by the sounds of Hollywood Jazz, from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. She studied piano early on for seven years, but it took time for her to discover her passion for jazz. She studied jazz piano with Paul Urbanek at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory in Vienna, in 2004. Barbara's inspiration and role models lie in the great Big Band leaders and composers Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Oliver Nelson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Gil Evans, Joe Henderson, and Maria Schneider. In 2009, she founded her Big Band to capture the sound and dynamic energy of the swing bands and dance orchestras of the past that fascinated her since childhood and served as the foundation for her own musical vision. Her debut album Barbara Bruckmüller Big Band released in 2013, with original compositions, was awarded the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Two years later, she released her second album, in tribute to her late mother and her hometown of Vienna, in which she arranged traditional Viennese songs for the Big Band and infused them with a fresh swing. Barbara is currently working on her next album project, THREE VIEWS OF A MUSICAL PIECE: A Chain of Moments – Suite in Five Movement with Cuban pianist and composer Aruán Ortiz, scheduled for Fall 2024. http://barbarabruckmueller.com http://wijsf.org

SynopsisOn today's date in 2008, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, soprano Dawn Upshaw and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra gave the first performance of a new song cycle, Carlos Drummond de Andrade Stories. Its composer, Maria Schneider, conducted the premiere.Drummond was one of Brazil's greatest poets, and Schneider came to know his work through English translations by Mark Strand. “Drummond's poetry struck me as deeply Brazilian, and Brazil is a country for which I've long felt an affinity,” she said. The Minneapolis premiere was something of a homecoming for Schneider, who was born in Minnesota and studied composition at its university before heading off to the Eastman School and after graduation being hired by the great jazz orchestrator Gil Evans as his assistant. In 1992, she formed her own jazz orchestra and won a Grammy with it in 2004.Upshaw is a big fan of Schneider's work, and in 2011 they collaborated on the premiere of a second song cycle, Winter Morning Walks, based on poems of Ted Kooser."I knew that no matter what she was going to write,” Upshaw said, “it was going to be a joyful experience."Music Played in Today's ProgramMaria Schneider (b. 1960) Carlos Drummond de Andrade Stories - Dawn Upshaw, soprano; St. Paul Chamber Orchestra; Maria Schneider, conductor ArtistShare AS-0121

Gary Versace is one of my favorite contemporary Jazz pianists. He's equally adept at playing organ and accordion, and he's a composer. Gary has taken over the piano chair in Maria Schneider's Orchestra, after the sad and sudden passing of our mutual friend, Frank Kimbrough. It's hard to imagine anyone else filling those huge shoes. Gary has played with so many of the current Jazz greats. I had the opportunity to hear him and meet him when he performed at Furman University with Dave Pietro's quintet. And Gary and I have another mutual friend and influence, the master, Art Lande. Art speaks very highly of him! This is a fascinating and wide ranging talk, about Gary's growth and development and what he's currently into. Gary also teaches at Eastman School of Music. I'm sure you will dig this conversation with Gary Versace. Gary VersaceI am available for online or in person study. Reach out to me at: keith@keithdavismusic.com Keith Davis Music
