“Moral philosophers have defined discrimination using a moralized definition. Under this approach, discrimination is defined as acts, practices, or policies that wrongfully impose a relative disadvantage or deprivation on persons based on their membership in a salient social group.[9] This is a comparative definition. An individual need not be actually harmed in order to be discriminated against. He or she just needs to be treated worse than others for some arbitrary reason. If someone decides to donate to help orphan children, but decides to donate less, say, to black children out of a racist attitude, he or she will be acting in a discriminatory way even if he or she actually benefits the people he discriminates against by donating some money to them.[10] Discrimination also develops into a source of oppression, the action of recognizing someone as 'different' so much that they are treated inhumanly and degraded.[11] This moralized definition of discrimination is distinct from a non-moralized definition - in the former, discrimination is wrong by definition, whereas in the latter, this is not the case.[12] The United Nations stance on discrimination includes the statement: "Discriminatory behaviors take many forms, but they all involve some form of exclusion or rejection."[13] The United Nations Human Rights Council and other international bodies work towards helping ending discrimination around the world.” All of these happened to me in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia): “Donald Cressey's Cosa Nostra model studied Mafia families exclusively and this limits his broader findings. Structures are formal and rational with allocated tasks, limits on entrance, and influence on the rules established for organizational maintenance and sustainability.[177][178] In this context there is a difference between organized and professional crime; there is well-defined hierarchy of roles for leaders and members, underlying rules and specific goals that determine their behavior and these are formed as a social system, one that was rationally designed to maximize profits and to provide forbidden goods. Albini saw organized criminal behavior as consisting of networks of patrons and clients, rather than rational hierarchies or secret societies.[18][19][20] The networks are characterized by a loose system of power relations. Each participant is interested in furthering his own welfare. Criminal entrepreneurs are the patrons and they exchange information with their clients in order to obtain their support. Clients include members of gangs, local and national politicians, government officials and people engaged in legitimate business. People in the network may not directly be part of the core criminal organization. Furthering the approach of both Cressey and Albini, Ianni and Ianni studied Italian-American crime syndicates in New York and other cities.[179][180] Kinship is seen as the basis of organized crime rather than the structures Cressey had identified; this includes fictive godparental and affinitive ties as well as those based on blood relations and it is the impersonal actions, not the status or affiliations of their members, that define the group. Rules of conduct and behavioral aspects of power and networks and roles include the following: family operates as a social unit, with social and business functions merged; leadership positions down to middle management are kinship based; the higher the position, the closer the kinship relationship; group assigns leadership positions to a central group of family members, including fictive god-parental relationship reinforcement; the leadership group are assigned to legal or illegal enterprises, but not both; and, transfer of money, from legal and illegal business, and back to illegal business is by individuals, not companies. Strong family ties are derived from the traditions of southern Italy, where family rather than the church or state is the basis of social order and morality.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support
“Criticism of religion involves criticism of the validity, concept, or ideas of religion.[1] Historical records of criticism of religion go back to at least 5th century BCE in ancient Greece, in Athens specifically, with Diagoras "the Atheist" of Melos. In ancient Rome, an early known example is Lucretius' De rerum natura from the 1st century BCE. Every exclusive religion on Earth (as well as every exclusive world view) that promotes exclusive truth-claims necessarily denigrates the truth-claims of other religions.[2] Thus, some criticisms of religion become criticisms of one or more aspects of a specific religious tradition. Critics of religion in general may view religion as one or more of: outdated, harmful to the individual, harmful to society, an impediment to the progress of science or humanity, a source of immoral acts or customs, a political tool for social control.” I see so much psychosis in religion because they would blame Eve for misogynoir and transmisogynior. I had similar experiences in the DMV: “The locus of power and organized crime Edit Some espouse that all organized crime operates at an international level, though there is currently no international court capable of trying offenses resulting from such activities (the International Criminal Court's remit extends only to dealing with people accused of offenses against humanity, e.g., genocide). If a network operates primarily from one jurisdiction and carries out its illicit operations there and in some other jurisdictions it is ‘international,' though it may be appropriate to use the term ‘transnational' only to label the activities of a major crime group that is centered in no one jurisdiction but operating in many. The understanding of organized crime has therefore progressed to combined internationalization and an understanding of social conflict into one of power, control, efficiency risk and utility, all within the context of organizational theory. The accumulation of social, economic and political power[195] have sustained themselves as a core concerns of all criminal organizations: social: criminal groups seek to develop social control in relation to particular communities; economic: seek to exert influence by means of corruption and by coercion of legitimate and illegitimate praxis; and, political: criminal groups use corruption and violence to attain power and status.[196][194] Contemporary organized crime may be very different from traditional Mafia style, particularly in terms of the distribution and centralization of power, authority structures and the concept of 'control' over one's territory and organization. There is a tendency away from centralization of power and reliance upon family ties towards a fragmentation of structures and informality of relationships in crime groups. Organized crime most typically flourishes when a central government and civil society is disorganized, weak, absent or untrustworthy. This may occur in a society facing periods of political, economic or social turmoil or transition, such as a change of government or a period of rapid economic development, particularly if the society lacks strong and established institutions and the rule of law. The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Revolutions of 1989 in Eastern Europe that saw the downfall of the Communist Bloc created a breeding ground for criminal organizations.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

I've been aware for a long time that Adam was once involved in the New Atheist Movement, being a particularly big fan of Christopher Hitchens. It is no secret that individuals in the Atheist community have created harassment campaigns aimed at us, our events, our friends and partners. This has resulted in us turning away from that world and we have not looked back. David Silverman was arguably one of the most influential individuals that operated in the Atheist circles. Post Mythcon IV, David joined the bandwagon and went on a crusade to publicly vilify us, our friends, our event and our partners while simultaneously promoting his own event as the antithesis of ours. As a principle, we do not engage publicly in this type of drama or respond to bad faith individuals. We did not speak to David after his campaign against us. David was later accused of sexual misconduct and fired from his position as the leader of the American Atheists organization. We will be having a discussion with David about these allegations and whether or not his perceptions of the divide in Atheism have changed.

#122: Is the Atheist Movement the Sensible Middle Cellar Door Skeptics begins the episode this week talking about the media corporations, specifically Sinclair, and what it means to have one corporation own 70% of the media networks. The discussion surrounds printed newspapers and if the country would move back to printed media if we started to have to pay for online articles. The duo also look at Bill “Shootee” new proposal to help children read. Essentially his idea was to have a public place and demand kids read. This sounds like an authoritarian version of a library. Funny how in the last 5 years that the GOP has controlled Michigan we are only now trying to deal with our education problem. Lastly Chris Squared decided to talk about a recent article in Vice about how the Atheist movement looks like it is veering toward an alt right political position. They tackle the dialog between the Vice article and a Friendly Atheist article. As they flesh out these two articles, an earnest discussion started with a look at a prominent Atheist whose political beliefs have veered toward a Neo-con mentality. They deconstruct whether the “Sensible Middle” is where the Atheist movement has always been or if it is leaving and heading more conservative. My guest for today is Stephanie Zvan. She’s a blogger whose blog, Almost Diamonds, can be found on The Orbit. She’s also one of the organizers for Minnesota Atheists, and one of the hosts of the Atheist Talk radio show. Today we’re going to talk about a recent blog post she wrote about “divisiveness” in the atheist movement. The post was written in response to Dogma Debate host David Smalley’s recent talk at this year’s Gateway to Reason conference (the link to which I’ll put in the show notes). As I tell Stephanie in the interview, at first I thought he did a good job talking about how not to let different opinions divide the movement. In this week’s show our guest is Seth Andrews, a former Christian broadcaster and believer for 30 years. He is the host of "The Thinking Atheist" a very popular podcast and an activist of atheist community on the internet. Mr. Andrews shared a brief summary of the modern atheist movement and the different groups that make up this phenomenon. An advocate for "Free-Speech" and the free exchange of ideas, Mr. Andrews talked about the limited understanding that the authors of religious texts had. To him atheists have a strong sense of justice and battle against "belief" which is the most important element of religion; as compared to atheism which is based in fact-checking and empirical evidence.
