Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and fact-checker, comedian, and podcast host David C. Smalley break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss: Where did the practice of ear candling originate? It's got to come from a noble, ancient, shamanic tradition and not some hippies out to make a buck, right? Ear candling is a thriving industry that rakes in about $1.2 million a year. Are there risks to placing a hollow, burning candle in your living human ear canal? In spite of any of its potential dangers, at least ear candling gets rid of excess earwax and other debris like it's supposed to, right? If ear candling is so hazardous to your health, the FDA or some governmental agency is on the case to have it banned, right? Right? Connect with Jordan on Twitter, on Instagram, and on YouTube. In pre-Covid times, many organisations had very informal arrangements with employees who worked some or all of their time away from the office. Often, managers were the only ones that knew who was working remotely – HR departments had no need to record details or keep track of arrangements. However, some employees now want to work remotely in a different country from the one in which their employer is based. Some apparently don't even tell their employer before they leave the country! This situation can open the employer and employee up to a whole raft of obligations, costs and taxes, depending upon where the employee works, where the company is based, how long the arrangement is going to last, and even the importance of the individual to the business.Don't sleepwalk into this situation! Our experts explain why employers need to carefully consider a range of aspects, so they can make conscious choices about what is right for their organisation and employee/s. Above all, you need a policy framework in this area, to protect you from nasty surprises which can range from additional cost to downright illegality. AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: James Hourigan, Partner / Global Employer Services, BDO James.Hourigan@bdo.co.uk https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-hourigan-578022156/  Ross Robertson, Partner / International Tax, BDO ross.robertson@bdo.co.uk https://www.linkedin.com/in/ross-robertson-40b8913a/ BDO https://www.bdo.co.uk/en-gb/home AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contacts: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com and Brad Taylor btaylor@advanced-workplace.com Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? Many organisations are grappling with their arrangements for hybrid working – trying to figure out what's right for them. And that's ok – nobody has a foolproof blueprint for the post pandemic world – everyone is finding what works for them, for now. You don't need all the answers and living with some ambiguity and uncertainty is something we've all had to do since March 2020.Things will change, and your response should evolve so that the agreements you have in place adapt to where you are and what your people need.AWA has a 7-step process to help organisations navigate this terrain. We outline the steps, which form part of a change management process and we'll explore why this is necessary to get everyone on board and feeling like they own the change and the way forward. The pandemic has been hard, but this is an opportunity to put some things in place that we didn't have before, and we've probably needed for years – like Taco Tuesdays! AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Lisa Whited, Senior Associate in Change Management, AWAAnne Balle, Senior Associate in Change Management, AWA AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/  Author mentioned by Lisa:  James Clear: Atomic Habits CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson  amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contacts: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com and Brad Taylor   btaylor@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/   Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? Are there times when you just can't get started on a piece of work? Do you find it difficult to focus sometimes, particularly when there are constant interruptions? Does working with people you don't know well feel like hard work? These situations and many more reflect the level of mental workload we experience under different conditions. They are a combination of many factors – some of which have been researched and links have been established, so we know that they definitely have an impact on the load that we experience. Aspects such as the strength of our personal relationships and trust can  help reduce the amount of mental workload we experience. Our guests, both authors of AWA's recent research, share some examples of how to unlock the reasons why our mental workload is affected, and what we might be able to do to combat the effect. Did the IPCC climate assessment report shock you? Are you wondering what your organisation can do to address carbon emissions and reduce your impact on the planet? There is undoubtedly an emergency but there are things we can do. In the face of new ways of working, with less people in the office, organisations are thinking about and planning for different levels of occupancy and trying to balance the ability to be flexible and responsive, with the need for some certainty around the requirements of those coming into the office. People are wondering how to make sure they can be with the people they want to collaborate with, if they decide to make the journey to the office. There are tools that can be used to help organisations manage the accommodation demand and ways to measure carbon emissions in granular detail, so that real reductions can be identified and delivered – rather than using averages and/or using carbon offsets.Just as the pandemic has inspired us to think differently about how we work, the climate emergency could also be the jolt we need to change the carbon footprint of our businesses.Andrew Mawson, AWA's Founder and MD shares his perspectives about models being explored by organisations in the UK market and elsewhere, and the moral conundrum of operating half empty buildings that generate carbon, along with the emissions generated through commuting and business travel. Should we be thinking about sharing buildings and operating a 7 day week, adopting different working patterns that embrace the weekend, rather than building more office space?  AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Chris Hood, Director of Consulting, EMEA, AWARaj Krishnamurthy, CEO, Freespace  https://www.linkedin.com/in/enria/    William Buller, Senior Associate, AWAPierre-Louis Godin, Sustainable Business Manager, Emitwise https://www.linkedin.com/in/pierre-louis-godin-90b700167/ Andrew Mawson, Founder and MD, AWA AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/  AWA report: I don't like Mondays (or Fridays)https://www.advanced-workplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/I-Dont-Like-Mondays-Fridays-AWA-Report-Feb-2021.pdf  CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/   Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? Virtual culture - it's intentional

Is organisational culture wholly connected to physical buildings and experiences? Or can we sustain the things that are important – our purpose and values – virtually? Why are many managers so concerned that culture will be damaged if people don't return to the office? We consider what culture is (“the way we do things around here”) and how it has been linked consciously to office locations in the past, and that now perhaps there's a need to decouple that connection and intentionally think about how we can embed the important values within our virtual working practices and behaviors.Clearly culture isn't forged in the same way when we aren't together in the same place, and as with many aspects of managing and working virtually, there is a need to think more deeply and to be more focused and deliberate about the way we reinforce and demonstrate the important aspects of culture.Continuing our series of interviews with AWA's global team, Celeste Tell, our Senior Associate in the Pacific Northwest talks about the “musical chairs” movement of people in and out of Seattle, as they find new places to live, now they can work remotely. She also reinforces the notion of addressing culture intentionally and embedding those intangible aspects into the virtual working environment.  AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Andrew Mawson, Founder and MD, AWA (UK)Lisa Whited, Senior Associate in Change Management, AWA (USA)Catherine Lamson, Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, MEMIC https://www.linkedin.com/in/catherine-lamson-sphr-shrm-scp-wcp%C2%AE-469b8b5/ Mel Parkes, Global Head of Workplace Transformation, bp https://www.linkedin.com/in/melparkes/ Robin Shapiro, CEO, TBWA/WorldHealth https://www.linkedin.com/in/robin-shapiro-she-her-hers-4497677/ Celeste Tell, Senior Associate in Workplace Transformation, AWA (USA) AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/   Pamela Hinds and Brian Elliott HBR article quoted:  https://hbr.org/2021/02/wfh-doesnt-have-to-dilute-your-corporate-culture  CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/   Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? The new working patterns (hybrid, virtual, flexible) that are now widely available are causing organisations to consider how much and what type of office space they need. With the potential for over 800k roles to be delivered away from Inner London offices, what does this mean for the City?We share recent research conducted by AWA on the potential reduction in roles carried out in offices in London and look at trends in other locations – India and San Francisco - to get a sense of whether moves away from big centres are temporary or permanent. We also hear from the British Heart Foundation who are reducing the amount of space they occupy in London (reducing from 2 floors to 1) as a consequence of listening to the way staff want to work and realising they can substantially reduce their accommodation costs.AWA's Senior Associate Clark Elliott also shares that people in Switzerland tend to live outside the big cities, so there hasn't been a big exodus during the pandemic. He also wonders whether the previous practice of living outside Switzerland and flying into the country to work during the week will hold up once offices are fully open.AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Lara Al Ansari, Associate, AWA (London)Kerry Smith, Director of People and Organisational Development, British Heart Foundation https://www.linkedin.com/in/kerrysmithj/ (London)Partha Sarma, Senior Associate, AWA (Mumbai)Nida Mehtab, Senior Associate, AWA, (San Francisco)Clark Elliott, Senior Associate, AWA (Geneva) AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/  Links to reports mentioned:The Future of Work in Inner London: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/TheFutureOfWorkInInnerLondon_V6-UK-Version.pdf I don't like Mondays (or Fridays): https://www.advanced-workplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/I-Dont-Like-Mondays-Fridays-AWA-Report-Feb-2021.pdf  CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/   Music: courtesy of bensounds.com Want to know more about AWA? Since the start of the pandemic, organisations have been navigating many changes, not least of which is their relationships with employees. We've seen a softening in these relationships, with compassion and empathy now the watch words for managers. Our guests discuss the change in the balance of power at work, where many employees now feel empowered to speak more openly about what they need – whether that is within the current organisation, or a fresh start.Sharing her popular catchphrase “The thing is not the thing”, Adria Horn from Tilson Technology Management explains that she learned through many years leading people in the military that it is often difficult for people to pinpoint the issues they are facing. So whatever they bring to you is generally not actually “the thing” – i.e. there is another, underlying issue that you need to try to help them uncover and then address. All part of the new approach to managing in a world where the pandemic has brought so many changes and challenges, but also opportunities. In addition, AWA's Izabel Barros shares her perspective on developments in Brazil, where 95% of Brazilian CEOs are looking to implement hybrid work environments. Labour laws are very strict in the country and Izabel tells us about an agreement reached between an insurance company and a union to implement flexibility at work, which looks like great progress. AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Adria Horn, Executive Vice President (Workplace), Tilson Technology Management (USA) https://www.linkedin.com/in/adriahorn/ Lisa Whited, Senior Associate in Change Management, AWA (USA)Dr Izabel Barros, AWA (Brazil) AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/   CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/   Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? Leaders - fit for purpose?

The role of leaders has undergone a revolution since the start of the Covid 19 pandemic. Leaders and managers have adapted to managing virtually, some have learned new skills, others are waiting for a time when they can go back to the way things were. But their teams have had a taste of a different way of working and as so many are registering a willingness to leave their organisations if they can't work how they want to, leaders really have to step up.We explore the challenges, the advancements that many have made and the skills that will help leaders to bring their whole selves to work and be “ruthlessly authentic” as one of our guests so eloquently put it. That authenticity breeds trust – one of the aspects of virtual team working that can be damaged when we don't see each other very often. Also, AWA's Sofia Fonseca de Nino shares what she's seeing in the Gulf Coast region of the US as energy companies in Houston continue to transform their approach to energy generation but also in terms of the way they work. She also stresses the importance of having connected, clear goals (organisational, team and personal) particularly when working away from offices, as we aren't surrounded by those visual cues. AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: Philippa Hale, Senior Associate in Change Management AWA (UK)Ainsley Wallace, President & CEO, University of Southern Maine Foundation (USA)David Smoragiewicz, MD, New England Market Leader, Willis Towers Watson (USA)Sofia Fonseca de Nino, Senior Associate, AWA (USA) AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/   CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com  Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/      AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/   Music: courtesy of bensounds.com   Want to know more about AWA? In an increasingly complex world, management and decision making are ever more challenging. Using a variety of sources of evidence is a way to avoid our inbuilt, unconscious biases, enabling us to make better, more informed decisions. Eric Barends, MD of CEBMa shares the drivers behind the evidence-based movement and how to gather different sources of evidence to contribute to critical thinking and support decision making.Eric also offers advice on how to judge the reliability and trustworthiness of research that we read about on a daily basis. Also, AWA's Céline Chaverot shares what she's seeing as French companies and multinationals in France get to grips with the “back to the office” debate. While many have been waiting to see what would happen and what others would do, it seems employees have made their own minds up about what they want for the future. AWA Host: Karen PlumFeatured guests: ·         Eric Barends, Managing Director of the Centre for Evidence Based Management·         Céline Chaverot, Senior Associate, AWA (France) Author mentioned by Eric: Daniel Kahneman – “Thinking Fast and Slow”AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/   CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:Centre for Evidence Based Management (CEBMa) https://cebma.org/  AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/     AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.comAdvanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/  Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? Are companies simply going back to the way things were – or are they striving for a better future? AWA's Senior Associate Lisa Whited reflects on how many offices were before the pandemic struck - full of noise, interruptions and inadequate spaces for concentration and collaboration. We hear from two guests at a recent AWA Webinar – Kerry Smith from British Heart Foundation and Robin Shapiro of TBWA/WorldHealth. Both organisations are adapting to new opportunities and are engaging with their people to jointly design the future of work.Passionate about the power of conversation, Lisa explains why they can bring about so much positive change. She also talks about the need to support managers to manage their people in a different way (particularly if they are working virtually or in a hybrid way), to provide the right conditions for them to flourish. Also, Partha Sarma shares what he's seeing in India as companies adapt to employee feedback. This represents quite a change in approach and culture for India. Many people moved to their home towns during the pandemic and some don't want to return to the cities. Recognizing that a world of opportunity is available through virtual working, they are even prepared to quit if they don't get what they want.  AWA Host: Karen Plum, Director of Research & Development, AWAFeatured guests: Lisa Whited, Senior Associate in Change Management, AWA (USA)Kerry Smith, Executive Director of People and Organisational Development, British Heart Foundation https://www.linkedin.com/in/kerrysmithj/Robin Shapiro, CEO TBWA/WorldHealth https://www.linkedin.com/in/robin-shapiro-she-her-hers-4497677/Partha Sarma, Senior Associate in Workplace Strategy, AWA (India)AWA Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/  CONTACTS & WEBSITE details:AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/    AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.comAdvanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/  Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA? How has the world of work changed since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and how are organisations responding? AWA's MD Andrew Mawson shares his unique perspective - based on his work with organisations across the globe, many of whom are facing the same challenges. While many are using the opportunity to change the way they operate and to give people greater choice, others are calling everyone back to the office. Andrew shares how AWA is helping organisations figure out what's right for them – outlining 4 key steps that embrace dialogue and engagement to determine the best solutions. Andrew concludes that "this is really sounding the death knell for the 'traditional' office". Also, hear what's happening in California as Nida Mehtab highlights differences in how organisations in tech, utilities, insurance and finance are embracing workplace change, including the impact of regulation and the need to lead the way in sustainability and carbon footprint reduction.Host: Karen Plum, Director of Research & Development, AWA AWA guests: Andrew Mawson, Founder & Managing DirectorNida Mehtab, Senior Associate in Workplace Strategy (USA)Chris Hood, Director of Consulting EMEATanisha Krishnan, Associate (UK)Lisa Whited, Senior Associate in Change Management (USA)Guest details: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/about-awa/the-team/  CONTACTS & WEBSITE details: AWA contact: Andrew Mawson amawson@advanced-workplace.com Advanced Workplace Associates: https://www.advanced-workplace.com/    AWI contact: David Smalley  dsmalley@advanced-workplace.comAdvanced Workplace Institute:  https://www.advanced-workplace.com/awa/services/advanced-workplace-institute/  Music: courtesy of bensounds.com  Want to know more about AWA?
