Every year, this year not withstanding, I do an episode on Halloween, the best holiday of the year, on a horror movie, and this year it felt very apropro to cover Halloween Ends. Halloween Ends came out during the mid-years of the pandemic and was divisive in the horror community for the treatment of Michael Myers and the introduction and focus on a new, possible replacement. Divisiveness aside, the film treats Myers like a trauma monster, has some wild kills, and features an opening that may be one of the finest cold opens in horror history.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kulturecast--2883470/support.

Chuck Todd opens with critical media industry news as Nexstar's acquisition of Tegna threatens to devastate local TV journalism through consolidation that will create duopolies and slash newsroom jobs while fundamentally altering how Americans receive local information at the worst possible moment for democratic accountability. He shifts to Trump's complex role as a self-perceived "mediator" rather than Western ally in Ukraine negotiations where his deliberate inaction has inadvertently forced Europe to take security more seriously while Putin's biggest strategic miscalculation remains never giving Trump a political win that could justify backing off. Then, he offers an analysis of how American political strategy has become deliberately divisive through sophisticated microtargeting technologies. He explains that Obama's 2012 victory was misinterpreted and incorrectly assumed identity politics would define future elections when class divisions have actually become the primary fault line in American life.  He argues that the American public still responds positively to authentic unity messaging—suggesting the current toxic political environment is more a product of deliberate strategic choices than inevitable differences and could be reversed by leaders willing to reject a divisive playbook. Finally, he answers listeners' questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment.Timeline:(Timestamps may vary based on advertisements)00:00 Introduction01:00 Housekeeping note - Will release 3 different versions of audio pod03:00 Nexstar buys Tegna, will consolidate and devastate local TV news 05:15 Merger will create local duopolies for TV affiliates, fewer journalists07:30 Merger will have drastic effects on how people get local information08:30 Trump holds court with Zelenskyy and European leaders09:45 Trump sees himself as a mediator rather than ally of the west11:00 Trump's inaction has forced Europe to take security more seriously12:45 Can't sell American public on putting U.S. troops in Ukraine15:30 Putin's miscalculation is never giving Trump a win18:15 If Trump exerted leverage, Putin would back off21:15 Putin has united Europe22:15 American political strategy is deliberately divisive & polarizing23:15 Campaigns used to treat undecideds as moderates24:30 Campaigns discovered independents had a wide range of views25:15 Digital tools allowed for microtargeting of voters26:45 Obama's reelection win was misinterpreted29:00 Both parties thought identity would define politics when it was class30:15 Class is the dividing line in American life32:00 The public does respond to authentic unity messaging34:15 Ask Chuck 34:30 Have the Reagan Republicans given up? 38:45 Are the modern American oligarchs similar to those of the 1860s? 42:30 Is Trump taking over DC to dictate the results of elections?

Do you think we are more divided now than ever? Are you tired of conflicts? Do you want to try to get along with others better? Lisa continues the conversation today with our guest James Twyman. James is known as a “Peace Troubadour” as he has united millions of people around the world with his music and messages of peace. He knows that there IS a way to get along. If we can give up the need to be right, we can listen and learn from one another. James is attempting to start a movement to further the idea of communication and peace. He talks about taking a very short survey on www.de-polarize.com. Can we be humorous with one another? Laughter also heals and brings people together. The biggest issue is that we don't listen to one another. Love can bring us together, and that's not about being “right.” James and Lisa also talk about safety in a conversation and how to navigate, knowing you may get verbally attacked. When we don't honor one another's opinions, and get into arguments, it may not feel safe. Yet, we are on the precipice of a wonderful opportunity. We can all become de-polarizing agents by finding ways to creatively communicate. James offers tools and will be teaching classes about peaceful ways to communicate and listen to one another. It's part of his movement toward peace. It starts with being open and mindful. If we create an open space for dialogue, and listen with love and compassion, others will as well. James also shares his experiences in Iraq and with Saddam Hussein. He held a peace concert and found people coming together in music. He discovered that they had much more in common and could heal their differences.  People around the world were also meditating for peace and miracles occurred. If this can happen in war-torn circumstances, we can learn how to be peaceful toward people with differing beliefs. James is an Episcopal Franciscan and Anglican priest. His latest book is “I Don't Know, Maybe, I Love You: How to De-Polarize Your Family, Business, Country and the World.” This is Part 2 of the interview. Do you find yourself with opposing viewpoints and arguing with your family, friends, or neighbors? Do people seem more hostile? Are you tired of all of the division in this world? Is it possible to “agree to disagree”? According to today's guest James Twyman, there IS a way to get along. James is known as a “Peace Troubadour” as he has united millions of people around the world with his music and messages of peace. His latest book is “I Don't Know, Maybe, I Love You: How to De-Polarize Your Family, Business, Country and the World.” The title came about when he was arguing with his brother on the phone during Covid. At a particularly heated moment, James said to his brother, “I don't know. Maybe. I love you, brother.” He realized this could be a way to de-escalate the disagreement. James talks about attending an international Peace Conference held by the Pope in which many different religious leaders were invited to express their own prayers of peace from their faith. James then turned each of the prayers into songs. He explains that there is a magic when you combine prayers with music. He's written 24 books and numerous songs and albums for the past several decades. He talks about the “pandemic of being right” and how difficult it is to communicate. It seems so challenging to “talk to the other side,” but if we go into compassion and love, it becomes possible. We cannot allow differing opinions to separate us. If we can just listen to one another, maybe we can come to an understanding. We are here to love one another. We can let go of the addiction to being right. He also talks about the teachings of Saint Francis, as he himself is an Episcopal Franciscan and Anglican priest. During the time of Saint Francis, it was also highly divisive. Saint Francis talked about how the real message of Christ is to love one another. He learned from the Islamic religious leaders and brought that back to Italy. We don't have to make people wrong just because their beliefs and opinions are different from ours. We can be genuinely curious and listen to one another. He asks us to consider the possibility that we can actually learn from one another. We have a choice and can be kind to each other. We can always find things that we agree upon. This is Part 1 of the interview. Info: www.worldpeacepulse.com and www.de-polarize.com

Hey mission fam! In this milestone 200th episode - Thoughts on Unity, I'm diving deep into the heart of Easter and what it truly means to be unified. As I prepared for the Millennial Choir's Messiah in America concert, I started reflecting on how quickly we can divide ourselves into tribes and categories - whether it's about mission experiences, personal choices, or different ways of showing up in life. Christ's message was never about everyone being exactly the same, but about being one under His love. I share powerful insights about how contrast is actually necessary for our growth, and how His Atonement covers all our differences and challenges. Using scriptures and personal stories, I explore how we can create compassionate space for each other, embrace our unique journeys, and truly honor the spirit of Easter by choosing unity over division. If you're feeling stuck, struggling with your mission experience, or just need a reminder of how deeply loved you are, this episode is for you. I'll help you see that love's redeeming work is already done, and we can choose connection over criticism every single time. Inner Journey with Greg Friedman esxplores Unity vs. Divisiveness.  Naturalist David Attenborough once asked, "Did you know that if you put 100 black ants and 100 red ants in a jar, nothing will happen? But if you shake the jar hard, the ants start killing each other. The red ants consider the black ants their enemies, and the black ants consider the red ants their enemies. The true enemy is the one shaking the jar." The same thing happens in human society. So, before we attack each other, we should think about it who's shaking the jar.

Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.   Jude 17-19 A Call to Persevere 17 But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 18 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” 19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.   And, they leave you with a call to action. Cutting ties with family is not just a personal choice; it's a cultural phenomenon with far-reaching consequences. We're tackling the controversial trend of going no contact, especially within the LGBTQ community, and how this practice, amplified by social media and even some psychological approaches, disrupts family harmony. Joined by insights from an Israeli psychologist and a revealing clip from MSNBC, we dissect the ideological shift that is reshaping how we handle familial and generational bonds. Our conversation anchors on viewing these challenges through a biblical perspective, recognizing our shared human frailty, and the transformative power of grace and forgiveness. Our complex world often prioritizes self-interest, leading to divisiveness that creeps into even the most faith-based communities. We share our personal stories and the joy discovered in serving others, acknowledging the cultural polarization that complicates political and religious identities. Despite sharing core beliefs, many feel isolated when political discrepancies are left unaddressed. We're advocating for humility and love as foundational values, fostering unity and open dialogue within the Christian community, and encouraging a deeper understanding of how these dynamics affect our interactions.Emotional resilience and biblical discipleship aren't just buzzwords; they're crucial tools for navigating today's parenting landscape and the fragility brought on by digital echo chambers. By examining the story of King David and his emotional candor with God, we highlight a path toward healing and maturity. In Episode 172. Resolving Differences, I explore the important topic of resolving differences. I delve into the brain's natural tendency to categorize things as "good" or "bad," which can lead to divisiveness, especially in our current climate. I highlight scriptural teachings that emphasize Christ's inclusivity and the invitation for all to come unto Him. I provide practical steps to combat this divisiveness, such as understanding that we may not know someone's full story, creating a safe space for diverse perspectives, and gently addressing divisive language. Importantly, I encourage listeners to let go of the need to convince others and instead focus on broadening their circles to include people with different beliefs and experiences. By embracing our differences and making room for everyone, I suggest we can create a more unified and Christ-like community. In conclusion, I emphasize that the best way to resolve differences is not to try to resolve them, but rather to understand that we are all part of the same human experience and should welcome everyone into our circles with love and understanding. Every once in a great while, a major media celebrity comes along who puts his or her talent and – well, celebrity – to work for the Common Good. Many generous artistic souls support good causes – and bless them for that! But there are a few who put the public interest at the center of their professional calling, and it's been my joy to know a couple of them. We just lost a special one: Phil Donahue. For 30 years, he brought a high-energy mix of unscripted fun, freewheeling grassroots democracy, serious issue exchanges, and public purpose to the unlikeliest of venues: Daytime TV talk shows. “Donahue” – the person and the show – defied studio bosses and conventional wisdom about what would appeal to “the great unwashed.” His crazy idea was to confront biases directly, with the audience as the stars. He put big issues in front of mainstream audiences before most TV bosses knew they were issues – abortion, medical price gouging, gender identity, atheism, NAFTA, Native Americans, AIDS, nuclear power, prison reform, family farmers, and so much more. And he did it daily, not talking to a pre-selected audience of like-minded people, but engaging disparate viewpoints directly in (often fiery) broadcasts. Moreover, he brought genuine activists (not just sparklies) onto the show as guests.
