Paul wrote to the believers in Ephesus: 'Pray...that whenever l open my mouth, words may be given me...that l will fearlessly make known...the gospel.' Do you pray for your pastor? You should! After Wilbur Chapman's (1859-1918) first sermon at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia USA, a man said, 'You are pretty young to be pastor of this great church. We have always had older men. I am afraid you won't succeed, but since you preach the gospel l am going to help you all l can.' Chapman thought, 'What a crank.' But the man continued, l am going to pray for you, and a few others have covenanted to join me.' Later, Chapman wrote, 'l didn't feel so bad when l learned that they were going to pray for me. Soon the three became fifty, and the fifty became two hundred who met before every service to pray for me. ln another room eighteen elders knelt so closely around me that l could put out my hand and touch them. l always went into my pulpit confident that l would have God's anointing in answer to the prayers of those people. It was easy to preach, a real joy. And what was the result? Eleven hundred people were saved and joined the church in the next three years, and six hundred of them were men. lt was the fruit of the Holy Spirit in answer to prayer. Church members have much more to do than go to church as curious, idle spectators to be amused and entertained. lt is their business to pray mightily that the Holy Spirit will clothe the preacher with power and make his words like dynamite.' [ John Wilbur Chapman was an American evangelist and a songwriter with the Presbyterian church] God's servant Rev Alfred Acheampong. Prayer Point: Heavenly Father help me to continue to pray always for my pastors so that they will be empowered with the Holy Spirit for effectiveness in ministry in Jesus name. Anchor Scripture: 'PRAY...THAT...WORDS MAY BE GIVEN ME...' (Ephesians 6:19 NIV) Stay Blessed! YearOfSupernaturalProvision

Audio worship service for the 22nd Sunday after Pentecost, Oct. 24, 2021, from Queen Anne Lutheran Church in Seattle, with Pastor Dan Peterson and Cantor Kyle Haugen. About today's music: The three hymns for the 10:30 service are featured in today's prelude and postlude. The prelude includes variations on tunes from today's hymns that come to us from the American gospel tradition. The variations on PRECIOUS LORD are by Sylvia Berg Oines (b. 1953), who currently serves as organist at Bethany Presbyterian Church, less than a mile from us. The setting of FAITHFULNESS is by Pam Gervais (b. 1960), a family farmer near Tracy, Minn. who holds degrees in piano performance and composition. Today's postlude, based on the Sending Hymn (10:30), is by Ronald A. Nelson (1927–2014), who is also the composer of the music for Holy Communion we sing today from Setting Four in Evangelical Lutheran Worship. —Cantor Kyle Prelude: Variations on PRECIOUS LORD Sylvia Berg Oines (b. 1953); Variations on FAITHFULNESS Pam Gervais (b. 1960) Gathering Hymn: Dearest Jesus, at Your Word (520) First reading: Isaiah 53:4-12 Second reading: Hebrews 5:1-10 Gospel: Mark 10:35-45 Pastor Dan's sermon is “The Lost Disciples of Jesus.” Hymn of the Day: Precious Lord, Take My Hand (733) Sending Hymn: Rise, O Church, Like Christ Arisen (548) Postlude: Variations on SURGE ECCLESIA Ronald A. The very first episode of this Podcast was published the first week of June and it was a conversation with a half-dozen pastor friends to see how they were coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. We got together again on the first week of September, and my friends were gracious enough to join me once again to check in on how their lives and congregations are doing after 9 months since the world shut down! This conversation is full of laughter but there is also a lot of stress, tiredness, and frustration in their voices, as well.We recorded this episode in three conversations. Here are the names of the folks you will hear, in the order they appear: Kim Priddy, minister of the Sedgefield Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, John Johnson, pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Graham, NC, and, Charlie Lee, who is the senior minister of the Starmount Presbyterian, also in Greensboro. The second group of three are: Kathy Beach, the one newcomer to this conversation, Kathy is pastor of the Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, NC, then, Ron Shive, senior minister of First Presbyterian in Burlington, NC, and Ernie Thompson, senior pastor of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NCLast but not least are Travis Milam, pastor of First Presbyterian in Pilot Mountain, NC and Dana Fruits, pastor of the First Presbyterian Presbyterian Church of Mocksville. Two resources are mentioned in the conversations that you might want to look into. The first is Ministry Collaborative, a ministry of the Macedonia Ministry Foundation. My guest today is Kyle Turver.  He is the worship director at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Queen Anne, Seattle.  We met a few years ago and have enjoyed insightful conversations on religion, politics, patriarchy and gender issues.  Today we talk about several films of 1984 including Footloose, The Terminator, The Karate Kid, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The NeverEnding Story, and Paris, Texas.  These films give us room to talk about many difficult issues facing the United States and Seattle-ites.  Although we do discuss religion I hope that all people will be able to enjoy the nuance of our talk.  The year is 1984, my guest is Kyle Turver.  I am Andrew Thomas Hackett.  This is The Trace.

**Note: The interview that aired live was edited due to time constraints. This podcast contains the unedited interview. The Shower of Stoles- Listening to the Silence: LGBT People of Faith Twelve years ago Bethany Presbyterian Church and other churches in the Spokane area brought the Shower of Stoles to Spokane. The Shower of Stoles is a collection of over a thousand liturgical stoles and other sacred items from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons from twenty-six denominations in six countries. Each stole contains the story of an LGBT person who is active in the life and leadership of their faith community in some way: minister, elder, deacon, teacher, missionary, musician, administrator or active layperson. The collection celebrates the gifts of LGBT people of faith who serve God in countless ways, while also lifting up those who have been excluded from service or who have served in secret because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The Spokane exhibit, representing 200 stoles, was intended to show LGBT Christians that they are loved, respected and important to the church, and to show members of the Christian faith community what they were missing by shunning LGBT individuals. The exhibit included seminars, workshops, and opportunities for conversation and worship. This year Bethany, with a new set of partners, is bringing the stoles back to Spokane. The exhibit at Bethany will run from April 28 - May 4, with pre-exhibits at Spokane Falls Community College, Eastern Washington University, Gonzaga University and the Community Building in Downtown Spokane. There will again be workshops, discussions, and opportunities to learn and dialog about creating a welcoming church community, reconciling religion and homosexuality, and how to nurture adolescents in the church who are discovering their sexuality. My guest was Minister Paul Rodkey, pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church. We discussed the Shower of Stoles Exhibit in Spokane. Pastor Paul Rodkey, the pastor of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Spokane Washington for twenty-three year, says of his church, "we are a congregation looking for the 'image of God' in each of God's children. Our motivation in faith is love. We are passionate about holy Scripture, in a healthy way. We believe it is important to be more open as opposed to closed to God's glorious and diverse world. We are ever hopeful that God's Kingdom of healing will triumph over human brokenness. All of God's children are welcome in this sanctuary of holy space. We are called to love, not judge." Pastor Rodkey discusses the "image of God" as he sees it. Contact Information: http://bethany-spokane.presbychurch.org, bethanyp@qwestoffice.net or call the church at (509) 534-0066.
